ynationhasachoicetomake.Inthisconflict,thereisnoneutralground.Ifanygovernmentoorstheoutlawsandkillersofiocents,theyhavebecomeoutlawsandmurderers,themselves.Andtheywilltakethatlonelypathattheirownperil.

I'meakingtoyoutodayfromtheTreatyRoomoftheWhiteHouse,aplacewhereAmericanPresidentshaveworkedforpeace.We'reapeacefulnation.Yet,aswehave

learned,sosuddenlyandsotragically,therecanbenopeaceinaworldofsuddenterror.Inthefaceoftoday'snewthreat,theonlywaytopursuepeaceistopursuethosewhothreatenit.

Wedidnotaskforthismiion,butwewillfulfillit.Thenameoftoday'smilitaryoperationisEnduringFreedom.Wedefendnotonlyourpreciousfreedoms,butalsothefreedomofpeopleeverywheretoliveandraisetheirchildrenfreefromfear.

IknowmanyAmericafeelfeartoday.Andourgovernmentistakingstrongprecautio.AlllawenforcementandintelligenceagenciesareworkingaggreivelyaroundAmerica,aroundtheworldandaroundtheclock.Atmyrequest,manygovernorshaveactivatedtheNationalGuardtostrengthenairportsecurity.WehavecalledupReservestoreinforceourmilitarycapabilityandstrengthentheprotectionofourhomeland.

Inthemonthsahead,ourpatiencewillbeoneofourstrengths--patiencewiththelongwaitsthatwillresultfromtightersecurity;patienceandunderstandingthatitwilltaketimetoachieveourgoalpatienceinallthesacrificesthatmaycome.

Today,thosesacrificesarebeingmadebymembersofourArmedForceswhonowdefendussofarfromhome,andbytheirproudandworriedfamilies.ACommander-in-ChiefsendsAmerica'ssoanddaughtersintoabattleinaforeignlandonlyafterthegreatestcareandalotofprayer.Weaskalotofthosewhowearouruniform.Weaskthemtoleavetheirlovedones,totravelgreatdistances,toriskinjury,eventobepreparedtomaketheultimatesacrificeoftheirlives.Theyarededicated,theyarehonorable;theyrepresentthebestofourcountry.Andwearegrateful.

Toallthemenandwomeninourmilitary--everysailor,everysoldier,everyairman,everycoastguardsman,everyMarine--Isaythis:Yourmiionisdefined;yourobjectivesareclear;yourgoalisjust.Youhavemyfullconfidence,andyouwillhaveeverytoolyouneedtocarryoutyourduty.

IrecentlyreceivedatouchingletterthatsaysalotaboutthestateofAmericainthesedifficulttimes--aletterfroma4th-gradegirl,withafatherinthemilitary:“AsmuchasIdon'twantmyDadtofight,”shewrote,“I'mwillingtogivehimtoyou.”

Thisisapreciousgift,thegreatestshecouldgive.ThisyounggirlknowswhatAmericaisallabout.SinceSeptember11,anentiregenerationofyoungAmericahasgainednewunderstandingofthevalueoffreedom,anditscostindutyandinsacrifice.

Thebattleisnowjoinedonmanyfronts.Wewillnotwaver;wewillnottire;wewillnotfalter;andwewillnotfail.Peaceandfreedomwillprevail.
