也許是因為近年來我在公示語翻譯錯誤研究方面做出了一些努力，取得了一定的成績，引起過媒體的關(guān)注，無意之中似乎有了那么一點點微不足道的知名度。誠然，以此作為開場白，并非是因為我沾沾自喜，而是遇到了一件意想不到的事情。今年6月20日，南京市29中學(xué)的一位與我索不相識的邵姓老師給我打來電話，與我磋商一句宣傳標(biāo)語的英譯，這句話就是才出版的第十二期《中國青年》封2上把“災(zāi)難無情人有情，大災(zāi)有大愛”翻譯為 The disaster heartless person feels emotion.The big disaster has the big love.邵老師認(rèn)為，這個譯文肯定有問題，甚至說存在著嚴(yán)重的錯誤，但是，當(dāng)他專程打電話給中國青年報社的編輯，向?qū)Ψ角蠼虝r，對方的答復(fù)是：懂英語的人員認(rèn)為可以這么翻譯，因此用不著改。

對于上述譯文，我與邵老師在電話中進(jìn)行了一番探討，我的意見是，這個譯文肯定不妥，尤其是前面一句話的譯文The disaster heartless person feels emotion可謂問題嚴(yán)重，語法不通，用詞不當(dāng)，中式英語氣息濃重，簡直讓人不知所云。后面那句話的英譯The big disaster has the big love，語法上倒是無懈可擊，只是怎么看怎么覺得別扭，總感覺不像是英語，頗有點像是people mountain people sea之類的網(wǎng)絡(luò)搞笑英語。Big love這樣的表達(dá)更是英語中似乎不存在的詞語搭配，倒是美國HBO電視臺推出的一部電影就叫做Big Love，中文還真的就是翻譯成“大愛”?？墒?，頗具諷刺意味的是，該電視劇講述的是美國的一個一夫多妻家庭的煩惱與瑣碎故事，居住在鹽湖城的男子Bill Henrickson是一位摩門教徒，擁有3個妻子，同時也有三幢相鄰的房子，三個家庭，以及7個子女。三位年輕美麗的妻子每夜輪流享用自己的丈夫??

為了進(jìn)一步了解情況，筆者求助于網(wǎng)絡(luò)進(jìn)行搜索，結(jié)果在某網(wǎng)站發(fā)現(xiàn)了其他類似譯文，如“大災(zāi)顯大愛，人間有真情”被翻譯成了Terrible disaster shows large love, full of love on earth.（http://）其中的“大災(zāi)顯大愛”的譯文Terrible disaster shows large love與The big disaster has the big love相比并無實質(zhì)差異，這個譯文顯然也是不合適的。

由此可見，自“5?12”特大地震災(zāi)難以來，為了表達(dá)全體國人在黨中央的強有力領(lǐng)導(dǎo)之下全國上下眾志成城抗震救災(zāi)的意志和決心而被廣泛引用的“大災(zāi)有大愛”這句話該如何翻譯成英語，真的成了一個難題，究其原因，這句話并非尋常的字面意思可以簡單解釋清楚的，它包含了太廣泛而豐富的背景信息，如何將其翻譯成英文，這里也許可以借鑒文化負(fù)載詞的翻譯策略。

在漢英翻譯實踐中，文化負(fù)載詞往往具有一定程度的不可譯性，其翻譯向來是一大難題。所謂文化負(fù)載詞又稱詞匯空缺，即原語詞匯所承載的文化信息在譯語中沒有對應(yīng)表達(dá)。在本文語境下，“大災(zāi)”不難理解，也不難翻譯，但是“大愛”究竟應(yīng)該怎么翻譯才能確切地傳遞其包含的內(nèi)涵，絕非易事，也絕對不是按照字面意思翻譯就能大功告成的。著名翻譯研究學(xué)者孫致禮曾指出，翻譯中的最大困難往往不是語言本身，而是語言所承載的文化意蘊。

在一切翻譯活動中，準(zhǔn)確無誤的理解是翻譯的前提和基礎(chǔ)。通過百度搜索發(fā)現(xiàn)，“5?12”特大地震災(zāi)難發(fā)生后被廣泛引用的“大災(zāi)有大愛”，其精髓主要體現(xiàn)為呼吁大家為災(zāi)區(qū)人民獻(xiàn)出自己的愛，讓無情的天災(zāi)在愛的面前低頭，讓愛溫暖著每一個災(zāi)區(qū)人們的心靈。也就是說，全國上下向災(zāi)區(qū)傳遞的一個強烈信息就是：天災(zāi)無情人有情。據(jù)此，筆者認(rèn)為“大災(zāi)有大愛”不妨翻譯為The disaster is merciless, but the world is full of love.這一譯文至少有兩點值得肯定，第一是英文表達(dá)完全符合語言規(guī)律和習(xí)慣，第二是大致傳遞了與源語相同的信息和內(nèi)涵。

除了上述理解與翻譯嘗試，我們也許還可以換一種思路。如果我們對“大災(zāi)有大愛”這句話進(jìn)行一個語法分析，可以看出它可以被解釋為帶有一個時間狀語的主謂結(jié)構(gòu)，也就是說，當(dāng)大災(zāi)發(fā)生的時候，大愛就出現(xiàn)了。因此，我們不妨將其翻譯為Witnessing great love in time of disaster，即災(zāi)難降臨時，我們見證了眾志成城抗震救災(zāi)的行動向災(zāi)區(qū)人民傳遞的濃濃愛意，乃至整個中國目睹了這份沉甸甸的愛。如果將上述譯文從祈使句格式擴(kuò)展成一個普通的簡單句，那么無論是用China 還是we作主語，在語法上都是講得通的，分別是China witnesses great love in time of disaster或 We witness great love in time of disaster。事實也確實如此，自從“5?12”特大地震災(zāi)難發(fā)生后，巨大的人力物力援助從全國各地涌向災(zāi)區(qū)，帶去的是全國人民獻(xiàn)上的一片愛心。此外，2004年12月26日印度洋海嘯災(zāi)難襲擊斯里蘭卡后，國際社會紛紛伸出援手，網(wǎng)上也馬上出現(xiàn)了Witnessing Love in Disaster-Stricken Sri Lanka這樣的表達(dá)。另一個例證是，此次四川地震災(zāi)難發(fā)生后，海外華人也紛紛行動起來奉獻(xiàn)愛心，而南非某華人社團(tuán)開辦的網(wǎng)站上打出了“人間菩提--大悲中有大愛”這樣的宣傳語，而其英語譯文正是Witnessing Great Love in Time of Disaster。由此可見，Witnessing great love in time of disaster也是符合英語表達(dá)習(xí)慣的，而且，它也是能大致傳遞“大災(zāi)有大愛”這樣的信息的。

其實，人們在面對災(zāi)難的時候希望向受災(zāi)者傳遞慰問和關(guān)愛心情，在英語中是有一個常用表達(dá)的，這就是one’s heart goes out to sb.，朗文當(dāng)代高級英語辭典對此的解釋是：這個表達(dá)常用于向某人表達(dá)同情（to say that someone feels a lot of sympathy towards another person）。著名網(wǎng)絡(luò)辭典The Free Dictionary對此表達(dá)的解釋和舉例如下：if your heart goes out to someone who is in trouble, you feel sympathy for them.e.g.Our hearts go out to the families of the victims of this terrible tragedy.在中國，“同情”好像常常被理解為帶有憐憫的成分，因此似乎不太受歡迎。但是，在英語中，有人遭遇天災(zāi)人禍并痛失親人之后，關(guān)切人士就會對他（她）說Our hearts go out to him/her。這一表達(dá)在歐美國家的英語新聞中也是十分常見的，這也是西方人向受災(zāi)者表達(dá)愛意的首選語言。2005年9月，卡特里娜颶風(fēng)襲擊美國新奧爾良釀成滅頂之災(zāi)后，美國媒體打出的新聞標(biāo)題是Our Hearts Go Out To The Victims Of Hurricane Katrina。2005年7月7日，倫敦遭遇連環(huán)恐怖爆炸襲擊之后，美國國務(wù)卿賴斯發(fā)表講話譴責(zé)恐怖主義的同時也對英國人民表示了慰問，她說：Our hearts go to the British people?！??12”特大地震災(zāi)難發(fā)生后，國際社會紛紛表達(dá)了關(guān)心與慰問，根據(jù)我國新華網(wǎng)的英語新聞報道，以色列外長向中國外長轉(zhuǎn)達(dá)的以色列政府向中國人民的慰問是這樣說的：Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and we pray for the speedy recovery of all the survivors。由此看來，把“大災(zāi)有大愛”表達(dá)為In time of disaster, our hearts go out to the quake victims是一個不錯的選擇，因為它至少符合災(zāi)難發(fā)生之后人們表達(dá)慰問和傳遞愛心的語境；其次，翻譯的最終目的就是在目的語國家實現(xiàn)成功交際，而使用符合目的語國家受眾語言文字和思維方式習(xí)慣的譯文乃是交際成功的關(guān)鍵。對外交流或?qū)ν庑麄?，信息的?nèi)容可以“以我為主”，語言和形式卻必須“以受眾為主”，要考慮以什么樣的語言和形式傳遞信息才能為受眾所理解，達(dá)到交流的目的。著名翻譯研究學(xué)者陳小慰認(rèn)為，外宣翻譯就是應(yīng)該遵循“以西方受眾認(rèn)可接受的話語方式，達(dá)到宣傳中國的目的”的原則，在翻譯中采取必要策略，努力建立外宣信息與目標(biāo)受眾之間的“認(rèn)同”。

當(dāng)然，“大災(zāi)有大愛”究竟怎么譯成英文才比較貼切，限于學(xué)識，筆者也只能在這里談一點個人見解，上述的一點探討也并非意味著已經(jīng)有了一個一勞永逸的理想解釋，如果有其他相關(guān)人士能夠提供更好的見解，那是值得鼓勵和歡迎的。在這里可以肯定的一點是，對于The disaster heartless person feels emotion.The big disaster has the big love這樣的譯文，筆者認(rèn)為是嚴(yán)重不妥的，也是著實不敢茍同的，不知道國外讀者是否能夠理解。筆者的傾向還是將其進(jìn)行歸化翻譯，使用英語在類似語境下的最常用表達(dá)one’s heart goes out to sb.，將其翻譯成In time of disaster, our hearts go out to the quake victims，因為翻譯絕對不是簡單的表面對應(yīng)。

最后想說一下的是，如果邵老師所言確鑿，那么，中青報社編輯部的答復(fù)實在值得商榷，其情形讓人不由得回想起北京奧運會吉祥物“福娃”英譯名Friendlies于2005年11月公布之后引起廣泛爭議時，北京奧組委有關(guān)人士答復(fù)說那是請教了專家學(xué)者的，因此不用改?？墒?，到頭來，“福娃”的官方英譯還是變成了Fuwa，個中意味值得深思。中青報社編輯部有關(guān)人員的一句“懂英語的人員認(rèn)為可以這么翻譯，因此用不著改”更是充斥著長期以來存在于社會的一種錯誤觀點，即很多人以為只要是學(xué)過外語的人就能做翻譯，“懂外語就能做翻譯”不僅是社會對翻譯認(rèn)識的一大誤區(qū)，也是我國外語教學(xué)中的一個誤區(qū)。近年來引起重視的公示語翻譯錯誤（諸如貴陽等于昂貴的太陽）就是這種錯誤認(rèn)識的產(chǎn)物。為此，中國翻譯協(xié)會以及不少專家學(xué)者近年來一直在大聲疾呼，試圖糾正這種認(rèn)識偏差，提高我國的翻譯水平，為改革開放和和諧社會建設(shè)添磚加瓦。
