我知道你們有些人還在適應(yīng)返校后的生活。但今天我來(lái)到這里，是因?yàn)橛行┲匾氖虑橐痛蠹乙黄鹩懻?。我?lái)到這里，就是想和大家聊聊教育的問(wèn)題，聊聊在這個(gè)新學(xué)年對(duì)你們大家有哪些期望。

1.恪盡職責(zé)

我想從你們對(duì)自身的責(zé)任談起。你們每個(gè)人都有自己的長(zhǎng)處，都有可以奉獻(xiàn)的東西。你們對(duì)自己都有一種責(zé)任，那就是找出自己身上的這種東西，而教育恰好可以提供這種機(jī)會(huì)。

也許你可以成為一名大作家，但在你寫出老師布置的那篇英語(yǔ)課論文之前，你或許并不知曉；也許你可以成為一名革新者或發(fā)明家，但在你完成科學(xué)課程設(shè)計(jì)之前，你或許并不知曉；也許你可以成為市長(zhǎng)、參議員或最高法院的大法官，但在你加入學(xué)生會(huì)或者辯論隊(duì)之前，你或許并不知曉。

不管你這一生想要做什么，我保證你都需要接受教育才能去做。你不可能輟了學(xué)就剛好能找到一份好工作。要找到好工作，你必須接受訓(xùn)練、刻苦努力并且不斷學(xué)習(xí)。

2.沒(méi)借口不去嘗試

我知道，要在學(xué)校取得好成績(jī)并不容易。我知道你們?cè)S多人在生活中都面臨著各種挑戰(zhàn)，使你們很難集中精力攻克學(xué)業(yè)。

我明白的。我知道你們的處境。在我兩歲的時(shí)候，我父親就離開了家，我是由單親媽媽帶大的。她不得不工作，有時(shí)候連支付各種賬單都很困難，別的孩子有的東西，她也不能總是一樣不差地買給我們。那時(shí)，我懷念生命中有父親相伴的日子，也有過(guò)感到孤獨(dú)、覺(jué)得自己與周圍的環(huán)境格格不入的時(shí)候。

所以那時(shí)我也不總是專注于我的學(xué)業(yè)，像我應(yīng)該做到的那樣。我也做過(guò)一些令我無(wú)法引以為傲的事情，也曾遇到過(guò)很多不該有的麻煩。我的生活隨時(shí)都有可能朝著更壞的方向發(fā)展。

但我是幸運(yùn)的，我得到了許多再來(lái)一次的機(jī)會(huì)。我有機(jī)會(huì)上了大學(xué)，上了法學(xué)院，追逐自己的夢(mèng)想。

你們有些人也許并沒(méi)有這些有利條件。在你們的生活中，也許沒(méi)有成年人為你們提供所需的支持。在你們家里，也許有人丟了工作，經(jīng)濟(jì)非常拮據(jù)。也許你所居住的居民區(qū)讓你沒(méi)有安全感，或者你有一些朋友在強(qiáng)迫你去做一些你明知道不對(duì)的事情。

但歸根結(jié)底，生活境況—你的相貌好壞、你的出身高低、你的錢財(cái)多寡、你家的情況—一切的一切，都不能成為你疏忽學(xué)業(yè)、態(tài)度惡劣的借口。你沒(méi)有任何借口可以和老師頂嘴、翹課或者放棄學(xué)業(yè)，沒(méi)有任何借口可以不去嘗試。

3.確立自己的目標(biāo)

你現(xiàn)在所處的境況左右不了你將來(lái)的成就。沒(méi)有人替你書寫命運(yùn)，因?yàn)槟愕拿\(yùn)要由你自己來(lái)書寫。你的未來(lái)要由你自己來(lái)創(chuàng)造。

4.以失敗為良師

事實(shí)是，成功來(lái)之不易。你不可能喜歡你所學(xué)的每一門課，也不可能和教你的每一位老師都投緣。并非每一次家庭作業(yè)都和你此時(shí)此刻的人生完全有關(guān)。第一次的嘗試也未必都能成功。

這很正常。在這個(gè)世界上，有些最為成功的人往往就是失敗次數(shù)最多的人。比如J.K.羅琳，她的第一部小說(shuō)《哈利·波特與魔法石》在最終得以出版前曾被退稿12次。邁克爾·喬丹在中學(xué)時(shí)曾被校籃球隊(duì)除名。在他的籃球生涯中，他曾輸?shù)暨^(guò)幾百場(chǎng)比賽，也曾數(shù)千次投籃不中。但他曾說(shuō)過(guò)：“我這輩子曾一而再、再而三地失敗過(guò)，而這就是我成功的原因?！?/p>

5.永遠(yuǎn)不要自暴自棄

沒(méi)有人生來(lái)就無(wú)所不能。只有通過(guò)刻苦努力，你才會(huì)變得有所專長(zhǎng)。沒(méi)有誰(shuí)第一次接觸一項(xiàng)新運(yùn)動(dòng)就能進(jìn)入校隊(duì)參加比賽，沒(méi)有誰(shuí)第一次唱歌就能把所有的音都唱準(zhǔn)，必須要勤學(xué)苦練才行。同樣的道理也適用于你的家庭作業(yè)。一道數(shù)學(xué)題你也許要做很多遍才能解開。某些文字你也許要讀上很多遍才能領(lǐng)會(huì)其含義。一篇論文，你肯定要打過(guò)幾遍草稿才能定稿上交。

I know that feeling.When I was young, my family lived overseas.I lived in Indonesia for a few years.And my mother, she didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education.So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday.But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.我了解這種感覺(jué)。我小時(shí)候，我們家生活在海外。我在印度尼西亞住了幾年。我媽媽沒(méi)有錢送我上其他美國(guó)孩子上的學(xué)校，但她認(rèn)為必須讓我接受美式教育。因此，她決定從周一到周五自己給我補(bǔ)課。不過(guò)她還要上班，所以只能在清晨四點(diǎn)半給我上課。

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school.And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous.I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now--(applause)--with just one more year to go.And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.I know that feeling.When I was young, my family lived overseas.I lived in Indonesia for a few years.And my mother, she didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education.So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday.But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.Now, as you might imagine, I wasn’t too happy about getting up that early.And a lot of times, I’d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table.But whenever I’d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and she’d say, “This is no picnic for me either, buster.”(Laughter.)

Now, I’ve given a lot of speeches about education.And I’ve talked about responsibility a lot.I’ve talked about teachers’ responsibility for inspiring students and pushing you to learn.I’ve talked about your parents’ responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and you get your homework done, and don’t spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with the Xbox.I’ve talked a lot about your government’s responsibility for setting high standards, and supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren’t working, where students aren’t getting the opportunities that they deserve.But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world--and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.That’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself.Every single one of you has something that you’re good at.Every single one of you has something to offer.And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is.That’s the opportunity an education can provide.Maybe you could be a great writer--maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper--but you might not know it until you write that English paper--that English class paper that’s assigned to you.Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor--maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or the new medicine or vaccine--but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class.Maybe you could be a mayor or a senator or a Supreme Court justice--but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it.You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? These people succeeded because they understood that you can’t let your failures define you--you have to let your failures teach you.You have to let them show you what to do differently the next time.So if you get into trouble, that doesn’t mean you’re a troublemaker, it means you need to try harder to act right.If you get a bad grade, that doesn’t mean you’re stupid, it just means you need to spend more time studying.No one’s born being good at all things.You become good at things through hard work.You’re not a varsity athlete the first time you play a new sport.You don’t hit every note the first time you sing a song.You’ve got to practice.The same principle applies to your schoolwork.You might have to do a math problem a few times before you get it right.You might have to read something a few times before you understand it.You definitely have to do a few drafts of a paper before it’s good enough to hand in

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.I do that every day.Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and that then allows you to learn something new.So find an adult that you trust--a parent, a grandparent or teacher, a coach or a counselor--and ask them to help you stay on track to meet your goals.And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you, don’t ever give up on yourself, because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.The story of America isn’t about people who quit when things got tough.It’s about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best.It’s the story of students who sat where you sit 250 years ago, and went on to wage a revolution and they founded this nation.Young people.Students who sat where you sit 75 years ago who overcame a Depression and won a world war;who fought for civil rights and put a man on the moon.Students who sat where you sit 20 years ago who founded Google and Twitter and Facebook and changed the way we communicate with each other.So today, I want to ask all of you, what’s your contribution going to be? What problems are you going to solve? What discoveries will you make? What will a President who comes here in 20 or 50 or 100 years say about what all of you did for this country?
