中國古人為何沒能發(fā)現(xiàn)地球是圓的

他設(shè)計并制造了一系列非常有趣的機械，絕對可以算是當(dāng)時的“黑科技”，可能是這些作品太過震撼，以至于在人們心中留下很多關(guān)于他的“傳說”。

一、“渾天儀”與地心說——大學(xué)霸張衡一句話帶來的誤解近來開始為騰訊·大家專欄寫作“這不科學(xué)”這個欄目，又把以前讀過的一些科學(xué)史的相關(guān)書籍拿出來翻一翻，加之頭二日與友人閑談，才發(fā)現(xiàn)有些誤解直到今天也還存在著。其中之一便跟東漢著名的大學(xué)者張衡有關(guān)。張衡，字平子，東漢南陽西鄂人，他與同時代的著名書法家崔瑗是一對好朋友。崔瑗評價他的治學(xué)態(tài)度是“敏而好學(xué)，如川之逝，不舍晝夜”，而其為人性格則是“體性溫良，仁愛篤密，與世無傷”。這樣看來，張衡不僅是個好學(xué)生，而且為人也堪稱是謙謙君子的典范。印有張衡像的郵票 他在文學(xué)上，頗有成就。當(dāng)時的文人都喜歡作賦，抒發(fā)自己情懷和政治理想，像司馬相如寫過的《子虛賦》，班固寫過的《兩都賦》，揚雄的《幽通賦》都非常的有名。張衡自己仿照班固的《兩都賦》寫下了《二京賦》，也仿照揚雄寫過《玄思賦》。正因如此出色的文采，他被后人尊為“漢賦四大家”之一。按照如今的觀點來看，張衡妥妥地可算是一個文科大學(xué)霸了，然而他的才華遠不止如此，因為他還是一個理工科大學(xué)霸！他設(shè)計并制造了一系列非常有趣的機械，絕對可以算是當(dāng)時的“黑科技”，可能是這些作品太過震撼，以至于留下很多“傳說”。他能夠制造飛翔的木鳥，“假以羽翮，腹中施機，能飛數(shù)里”，這也就是說，這種機械裝上機翼和驅(qū)動裝置，便能夠飛出好幾里地之外。在這個意義上，可以說這玩意絕不僅僅是憑借風(fēng)力的風(fēng)箏。他還將當(dāng)時久已不見的“指南車”給制造出來?！端螘ざY志五》記載，指南車據(jù)傳說是始于周公，制造出來以便使節(jié)或者軍隊在曠野中辨認(rèn)方向所用，然而“至于秦、漢，其制無聞。后漢張衡始復(fù)創(chuàng)造”。可惜的是，張衡自己也沒有把他的設(shè)計圖流傳下來，以供后人學(xué)習(xí)。故而，兩晉時期的著名道士葛洪，在其作品《抱樸子·辨問》一篇中，對張衡如是評價道：“善刻削之尤巧者，則謂之木圣，故張衡、馬鈞于今有木圣之名焉?！庇纱丝梢?，張衡在當(dāng)時的人們看來，大概是魯班再世了吧！當(dāng)然，張衡制造的最為著名的一件機械大概便是渾天儀了。其實，渾天儀并不是張衡獨創(chuàng)。在此之前，便有關(guān)于渾天儀的神話流傳，傳說在上古時期，堯登基為王的時候，封羲和為掌管天象的官員，而羲和則建造了一臺渾天儀以便測量時日。不過，傳說這臺渾天儀的制造方法一直被史官們保存，秘不示人。到了漢朝初年，一些人又開始重新制作它，以考察天象和歷法，之后又有人在這個裝置上面增加了“黃道”的標(biāo)志。一直到了張衡這里，這個裝置已經(jīng)發(fā)展到豪華的程度了。在《晉書·天文志》中有這樣的記載：張衡制造的渾天儀“具內(nèi)外規(guī)、南北極、黃赤道，列二十四氣、二十八宿中外星官及日月五緯”，我們可以看到這個機械達到了相當(dāng)復(fù)雜的水平。那么這個機械是怎么運轉(zhuǎn)的呢？按照書中的說法，主要是靠水力驅(qū)動，即“以漏水轉(zhuǎn)之于殿上室內(nèi)，星中出沒與天相應(yīng)”。除此之外，更為了不得的是，張衡還給這個渾天儀加裝了一個自動日歷功能！這個玩意叫作“瑞輪蓂莢”——其靈感源于一種傳說中的植物，據(jù)說這種植物從新月至滿月的階段，每天都會生出一個莢，而在月圓之后，每天都會掉一個莢。人們通過計算它身上的莢，便可知道這月過了多少天，而張衡的這個裝置便做到了“隨月虛盈，依歷開落”的效果。這樣一臺精密復(fù)雜的天文機械，背后肯定對應(yīng)著一個宇宙模型。張衡自己寫了一個《渾天儀注》來闡明自己這臺機械的原理，以及他對宇宙的認(rèn)識。書中寫道：“渾天如雞子，天體圓如彈丸，地如雞中黃，孤居于內(nèi)，天大而地小。”然而恰恰是這句話，使得一些人對“渾天說”產(chǎn)生了誤解！渾天儀不少人認(rèn)為，這段話意味著張衡已經(jīng)認(rèn)識到了“大地是球形的”。至于理由呢？可能他們覺得“地如雞蛋黃”，雞蛋黃是個球形的，那不就等于說大地也是球形的嘛？很多人會覺得中國的“渾天說”大概等于西方的“地心說”——在上個世紀(jì)的六十年代初，這個說法在國內(nèi)還挺流行的。當(dāng)然，這口鍋全讓今人背，似乎有些不公平。譬如，在《晉書·天文志》中，對張衡時代的“渾天說”有過這樣的記載：“前儒舊說天地之體，狀如鳥卵，天包地外，猶殼之果黃也；周旋無端，其形渾渾然，故曰渾天也?！比欢?，很多人想必沒有看過這段話后的一句：“周天三百六十五度五百八十九分度之百四十五，半覆地上，半在地下。”請讀者注意，在這段話之中，很明確地說了大地是分上下的，而在球型的“大地”上是沒有“上下”的概念。現(xiàn)在，讓我們再回到《渾天儀注》，接著往下看看張衡自己寫了什么，“天表里有水，天之包地，猶殼之裹黃。天地各乘氣而立，載水而浮”，而之后他還寫到了，“（周天）又中分之，則豐復(fù)地上，豐繞地下，故二十八宿半現(xiàn)半隱”。這也就是說，在張衡的眼中，雖然大地是包裹在天空中的，但同時它也是浮于水上的！然而這也恰恰說明了，張衡的“渾天說”與西方的“亞里士多德-托勒密”體系下的“地心說”是不可能相同的——水下是沒法住人的。另外還有一些比較明顯的證據(jù)也可以說明，張衡頭腦中的宇宙并不是“地心說”的那種系統(tǒng)。譬如，張衡在另外一本天文著作《靈憲》中，明確表達了他對天地形狀的看法：“天體于陽，故圓以動；地體于陰，故平以靜。”由此，我們基本可以肯定地說，在張衡的眼中，大地不僅不是個球，反而應(yīng)當(dāng)是“一大片兒地”。那么應(yīng)當(dāng)如何理解張衡的比喻呢？金祖孟先生曾如是評價道：“很明顯，張衡的比方，只是就天和地的內(nèi)外關(guān)系和大小關(guān)系而說的，并沒有涉及天和地的形狀的問題。因此，大地呈球形的推論，顯然來源于對于張衡原話的曲解，自然是沒有說服力的。”

二、信仰的賭博還是科學(xué)的實踐？——地理大發(fā)現(xiàn)與地球說關(guān)于歐洲中世紀(jì)對“地球的形狀”的認(rèn)識，安德魯·迪克森·懷特在他的《科學(xué)—神學(xué)論戰(zhàn)史》中這樣寫道：“我們發(fā)現(xiàn)，某些形式的這種觀念，成為了地理學(xué)研究的嚴(yán)重障礙。許多大膽的航海家們完全可以不畏海盜和暴風(fēng)雨，但是一旦想到他們的船從一個敞開的口子里掉進地獄之中，他們就會發(fā)抖，有一種流傳很廣的信念認(rèn)為，地獄是在大西洋的某個地方，但這個地方距離歐洲多遠不得而知。水手們的這種恐怖心理是哥倫布的偉大航行的主要障礙?！?那么，這種觀念到底是指的什么呢？ 懷特認(rèn)為，中世紀(jì)流行的宇宙觀是“大地扁平的”——我們姑且稱之為“地平說”——在大地的上方則是天堂；在大地的下方則是地獄。然而，他也不得不承認(rèn)另外一點，即“大地是球形的”這個學(xué)說——我們姑且稱之為“地球說”——仍然一直存在于歐洲中世紀(jì)時期，盡管基督教的早期很多神學(xué)家都反對它。這些反對者中就包括了盧修斯·拉克坦提烏斯（Lucius Lactantius），以及埃及的一名修道士科斯馬斯·因迪克普里茨（Cosmas Indicopleustes）。然而，懷特的這個說法真的站得住腳么？ 首先，與拉克坦提烏斯同一時期的神學(xué)家奧古斯丁和安布羅斯，都真心地贊成大地一個球形。盡管懷特試圖在自己的書中把這二人的態(tài)度描寫為“容忍”，但是不如讓我們來看一段原文再下論斷。奧古斯丁自己曾寫過一部關(guān)于《創(chuàng)世記》的解釋作品，名為《就字面而言，關(guān)于創(chuàng)世記的文章》（De Genesi ad Litteram）。其中便有這么一段文字： Cum enim totam terram adhuc aqua tegeret, nihil impediebat ut aquosa et globosa moles ex una parte faceret diem lucis praesentia, ex alia noctem lucis absentia...[雖彼時水仍覆蓋整個大地，然而沒有什么可以阻礙這一件事，即這整個一團如水如球之物，其一部分由于光照而為白晝，另一部分缺乏光照則為黑夜……（注：此句為筆者自譯）]我們可以看到，奧古斯丁在形容大地的時候，用了一個形容詞globosa, globosus——這個詞正是如今英文中的globe, global等詞的源頭，其意為“球形的”。因此，當(dāng)大地這一“球體”一部分接受光照的時候，另外一部分不是浸沒在水中，而是處于光所缺乏的黑暗之中。地心說圖解實際上，奧古斯丁的態(tài)度才是古代基督教神學(xué)家的普遍態(tài)度。在眾多古代神學(xué)家中，只有很小的一部分人明確地反對過“地球說”。至于修道士科斯馬斯·因迪克普里茨，他的看法實際上恰恰是受到了同時期的猶太教以及來自東方的“地平說”的影響，由此才成為了一名“地平說”的擁護者。另外，這位修道士的影響力也并沒有懷特夸張的那么大。不過，有一件比較有趣的事情可以說一說，在中世紀(jì)認(rèn)可“地平說”的人之中，雞蛋的比喻也被用來形容天地之間的關(guān)系！這似乎是來自于東方的證據(jù)。那么，為什么古代基督教會普遍堅持“地球說”呢？這就得要感謝古希臘的自然哲學(xué)傳統(tǒng)?；浇滩煌耆菑淖陨淼慕?jīng)典之中發(fā)展出來的“地球說”——在某種程度上，我們甚至可以說，《圣經(jīng)》更像是一部“地平說”的經(jīng)典。而恰恰是由于古代基督教神學(xué)家們認(rèn)真學(xué)習(xí)了古希臘人的學(xué)說，才使得“地球說”在教會中得以保存，并且得以同《圣經(jīng)》文本進行一番調(diào)和。如果之前有讀者讀過我關(guān)于伽利略和哥白尼的專欄文章，一定會知道，在神學(xué)家們主張“日心說”之前，在中世紀(jì)占據(jù)統(tǒng)治地位的天文學(xué)說，一直是以亞里士多德和托勒密二人的工作為基礎(chǔ)所構(gòu)建出來的“地心說”。不過，眾所周知的是，無論是在“地心說”中，還是在“日心說”中，在當(dāng)時的歐洲天文學(xué)家心中，大地終究是一個球，而非一片兒地…… 我也思考過，為何中國古代就沒有提出“地球說”，大概是因為中國古代的人們并沒有意識到“引力”的存在吧？或者說，中國古代的人們無法想象那些“頭朝下”的人們應(yīng)當(dāng)如何生活。我們可能必須要承認(rèn)，“地球說”在一定程度上是反直覺的。不過，這些問題在古希臘人看來，就不算個事兒。大概因為古希臘人對數(shù)學(xué)的宗教式癡迷，所以他們認(rèn)為球形與其它形狀不同——它象征了完善和諧的統(tǒng)一狀態(tài)。因此，一切神圣的星體包括地球在內(nèi)，都必然是球形的！那么，他們又是如何解釋，那些生活在他們腳下的，并且“頭朝下”的人們呢？正如我在之前專欄文章寫過的：雖然希臘人沒有“引力”的概念，但是在亞里士多德的學(xué)說中，每個物體都有自己的“份量”，而且這個“份量”越大的東西便越會趨向“中心位置”。因此，在地球外面的是“氣元素”，而在地球中心的則是“土元素”——至于我們每個人，都是憑借自身的“份量”立于這個地球之上，無所謂上下?；浇桃恢苯邮艿恼腔谶@個觀念的希臘自然學(xué)說。我們可以非常肯定的是，哥倫布在進行他的偉大航行之前，早就已經(jīng)了解這些學(xué)說了，并且會將之奉為圭臬。這是因為當(dāng)時的教科書就是如此寫的！

當(dāng)時全歐洲通用的課本，乃是由在巴黎大學(xué)任教的“薩科霍波斯科的約翰尼斯”（Johannes de Sacrobosco）所寫的《論世界之星球》（De Sphaera Mundi）——你僅僅從名字上看，便知道這肯定是一本關(guān)于“地球說”的作品。懷特在自己的書中甚至還想引證但丁的作品《神曲》，來說明當(dāng)時的人們多么恐懼于大海航行中遇到的來自“下方”的地獄。然而這只能愈加說明，在中世紀(jì)時期“地球說”才是普遍流行的看法。這是因為就連但丁都將“地球說”視為常識，并且他甚至還認(rèn)為整個南半球為大海所覆蓋——在海中間有個小島，那里面便是“煉獄”（Purgatory）的所在。雖然哥倫布最后發(fā)現(xiàn)的不是真正的中國和印度，但是不得不承認(rèn)的是，他與他的支持者們可從來沒有認(rèn)為過大地是平的……

三、“地球說”引入中國——利瑪竇與“西學(xué)東漸” 我們其實不必苛責(zé)中國古人沒有發(fā)現(xiàn)“地球說”，也不必刻意認(rèn)為中國古人已經(jīng)發(fā)現(xiàn)了“地球說”。實際上，在當(dāng)時整個世界中，除了希臘人這群奇葩之外，基本上所有人都沒有意識到大地可能是個球！如果沒有勇敢地接納希臘哲學(xué)的智慧，基督教恐怕一時半會也難以接受“地球說”。也許有人會說，日食或者月食的時候，中國古人在看到太陽或者月亮上的大地影子，應(yīng)該能夠認(rèn)識到大地是球形的。然而事情并非如此，中國古人認(rèn)為，無論日食或者月食，那是主要是因為陰氣在侵襲陽氣。更形象一點兒地說，那道陰影倒更像是在清水中滴下一滴墨汁所達成的暈染效果，而非光所照不到的物體影子。那么，中國古人最早可能于何時接觸到歐洲的“地球說”呢？筆者料想最早可能是在宋元時期。不得不承認(rèn)的是，在中世紀(jì)的時候，通過百年翻譯運動，穆斯林也早早地接受了“地球說”。當(dāng)時掌管“智慧宮”的著名波斯學(xué)者阿勒·花喇子密（Al-khwarizmi），就已經(jīng)為托勒密所寫的天文學(xué)著作《大全》（Almagest）一書做過注釋和摘要了。其后，隨著其后蒙古人崛起和征服，一些伊斯蘭教的國家被擊敗和收服，同時穆斯林的學(xué)術(shù)成果也被蒙古帝國所吸收進來。因此在宋元交戰(zhàn)之時，“地球說”頗有可能在此時進入了中國地區(qū)，不過似乎沒有留下什么過多的痕跡。等到“地球說”正式進入中國的時候，就應(yīng)該已經(jīng)到了明末清初之時了，這也要歸功于“西學(xué)東漸”的第一人利瑪竇（Matteo Ricci）。利瑪竇，號西泰，意大利的天主教耶穌會士，于明萬歷年間來華。至于他在中國的經(jīng)歷，大家想必早都應(yīng)該十分熟悉了，故而在此略過不表。利瑪竇像 當(dāng)利瑪竇初入中國之時，恰逢日食發(fā)生，當(dāng)時欽天監(jiān)準(zhǔn)確地報出了日食發(fā)生的時間，因此他對中國的天文學(xué)成就表示驚奇。然而漸漸地作為一個外人，在觀察過一段時間之后，利瑪竇對中國此時的天文學(xué)發(fā)生了質(zhì)疑。對此，他寫下了這樣一些札記： “他們沒有一個人知道地球吸引著有重量的物體，或引力把物體引向地球。他們不知道大地整個表面大都居住著人?；蛘呷藗兛梢宰≡诘厍蛳喾吹膬擅娑粫氯?；有些事情他們可以相信, 但有些事情他們許多人卻難以想象?！? 當(dāng)然，如果利瑪竇冷眼旁觀，他斷然也不會對中國的天文學(xué)做出任何貢獻。實際上，利瑪竇一直在為當(dāng)時的中國繪制第一幅《山海輿地圖》，并且他在旁邊還做了中文的注解。地與海本是圓形，而合為一球，居天球之中，誠如雞子黃在清內(nèi)。有謂地為方者，乃語其定而不移之性，非語其形體也…… 在這段話中，我們可以看到利瑪竇巧妙地引入了“前儒舊說”來為己證，然而他又將之與“地球說”進行了一番巧妙的調(diào)和——他引用了“雞蛋喻”，然而這次卻用來論證大地的形狀；又引用了“天圓地方”的說法，卻做了一番寓意性的解釋。他所作的解釋，正好與中國古代天文學(xué)傳統(tǒng)相互顛倒了，但是他卻幫助當(dāng)時的中國人認(rèn)識到了歐洲的天文學(xué)傳統(tǒng)。日后，在利瑪竇的士大夫朋友們的幫助之下，《山海輿地圖》又被復(fù)刻了很多版本，使得更多的人了解到了“地球說”。雖然彼時也有些士大夫認(rèn)為中國自古已經(jīng)有了“地球說”，但是卻沒法否認(rèn)歐洲“地球說”所擁有數(shù)學(xué)上的優(yōu)勢，因為歐幾里德的《幾何原本》也是由利瑪竇等人帶來的?？傊?，李約瑟博士（Joseph Needham）在其書《中國的科學(xué)與文明》中認(rèn)為，利瑪竇等耶穌會士的來到對中國天文學(xué)的一個重大貢獻。在這個意義上，中國的天文學(xué)家們才開始逐步擺脫了所謂的“渾蓋之爭”，更多地思考起“地球說”。（本文原標(biāo)題：《從渾天說至地球說——張衡、哥倫布與利瑪竇》）

第二篇：地球是圓的

如何證明地球是圓的？

能證明地球是球形的方法還有很多：

1.地平線為弧形；

2.海平面上的航船從遠方來，總是先看到桅桿、后看到船體，證明地球是球形；

3.日食、月食時，觀察月球，太陽食面總有一定的弧度。證明地球是圓；

4.麥哲侖的環(huán)球航行；

5.發(fā)生月偏食時，地球擋住一部分日光，使地球的影子投射在月面上，就像給地球照鏡子，使我們看見了地球的球體形狀。

最簡單的證明是拿一張人造衛(wèi)星的照片，眼見為實。

地球是圓的這個猜想在人類文明早期（無論東西方）都是存在的，當(dāng)然只是作為眾多猜想中的一支。第一個證明地面是有弧度的是古希臘數(shù)學(xué)家Eratosthenes，公元前240年，他已經(jīng)應(yīng)用巧妙的方法測算出地球的周長。Eratosthenes于每年夏至中午觀測太陽在埃及亞歷山大港的標(biāo)桿的影子，其入射角為7.2度；同時在其東南面500英里(1英里約等于1.6千米)外的一處地方，陽光恰好射到一個枯井的底部。（參考提供的鏈接）

當(dāng)然當(dāng)時地球是圓的這種觀點并不是所有人接受，但隨著文明的進步，尤其是天文，航海的發(fā)展，這種觀點日益深入人心。麥哲倫的環(huán)球航行（從東往西航行最后回到出發(fā)地）從實踐上證明了地球是圓的。

牛頓力學(xué)的發(fā)展最終從理論上證明地球應(yīng)該是圓的，而且所有天體都應(yīng)該是圓的。萬有引力定律指出，物體之間是相互吸引的，組成物體的各個部分都有向中心靠攏的趨勢。力求取得離重心較近的位置。因此在不受干擾的情況下，物體必逐漸聚集為球形。

進入20世紀(jì)，航空航天的發(fā)展使得直接觀察地球變?yōu)榭赡?。人們最終直接證明了地球是圓的。

注：嚴(yán)格而言，地球并非正圓形，由于自轉(zhuǎn)引起的離心作用，低緯度地區(qū)聚集了更多物質(zhì)。因而顯得突出。使地球呈類似橢球的形狀。

《地球是個美麗的圓》：“地球”代表大自然，美麗的“圓”正是人們所向往的。在本節(jié)課上，我以地球為載體，以感受大自然、保護大自然、熱愛生活為主線，通過看、聽、賞、唱、創(chuàng)、演來展開教學(xué)。具體教學(xué)理念體現(xiàn)在以下幾個方面：

一、營造輕松活潑的開放式教學(xué)環(huán)境，注重“游戲”在音樂環(huán)境創(chuàng)設(shè)中的作用

所謂開放式的教學(xué)，就是運用教學(xué)規(guī)律，在有限的時間里，把課堂主動權(quán)交給學(xué)生，充分發(fā)揮學(xué)生的主動性，使他們?nèi)谌氲竭@個教學(xué)活動中來，更重要的是使他們綜合運用所學(xué)的各種文化知識，其形式可以多樣化，加以競賽游戲方式更能達到好的效果。在導(dǎo)入教學(xué)環(huán)節(jié)里，為了讓學(xué)生了解地球相關(guān)的地理知識，我沒有采用傳統(tǒng)的教學(xué)模式，教師提出問題，學(xué)生回答，而是由學(xué)生自主探索，自我發(fā)現(xiàn)問題，自我解答問題?！澳銌栁掖稹钡男问皆趯W(xué)生的一問一答中潛移默化地掌握了知識，還增強了學(xué)生之間的團結(jié)合作，互幫互助的學(xué)習(xí)能力。采用競賽的方式，使學(xué)生的積極性得到提高，在輕松愉快的氣氛中進入教學(xué)環(huán)節(jié)。

情感體驗階段是音樂欣賞過程中十分重要的環(huán)節(jié)。音樂共鳴之處在于傳情，但這種傳情不象文學(xué)作品和繪畫那樣能產(chǎn)生直觀的具體形象。再好的音樂也不可能清晰地解釋周圍的事物，不可能明確地表現(xiàn)物體的形象。充分利用現(xiàn)代化多媒體教學(xué)手段，將音樂、圖畫、情節(jié)有機地結(jié)合在一起，它能給音樂課創(chuàng)造聽覺形象與視覺形象的聯(lián)合體。在感受大自然的教學(xué)環(huán)節(jié)，我運用多媒體教學(xué)，給學(xué)生展示了一個鳥兒啼唱，微風(fēng)低吟令人神往的維也納森林和一片生機勃勃的動物世界的畫面，讓學(xué)生耳聞目睹具體的視聽形象，調(diào)動學(xué)生多種感官的參與、體驗，使學(xué)生的對音樂的想象不再空洞，以此來激發(fā)學(xué)生感受美、理解美、欣賞美的情感。
