如果還有人對美國是否凡事都有可能存疑，還有人懷疑美國奠基者的夢想在我們所處的時代是否依然鮮活，還有人質(zhì)疑我們的民主制度的力量，那么今晚，這些問題都有了答案。

這是設(shè)在學(xué)校和教堂的投票站前排起的前所未見的長隊給出的答案；是等了三四個小時的選民所給出的答案，其中許多人都是有生以來第一次投票，因為他們認定這一次肯定會不一樣，認為自己的聲音會是這次大選有別于以往之所在。

這是所有美國人民共同給出的答案——無論老少貧富，無論是民主黨還是共和黨，無論是黑人、白人、拉美裔、亞裔、原住民，是同性戀者還是異性戀者、殘疾人還是健全人——我們從來不是“紅州”和“藍州”的對立陣營，我們是美利堅合眾國這個整體，永遠都是。

長久以來，很多人一再受到告誡，要對我們所能取得的成績極盡諷刺、擔憂和懷疑之能事，但這個答案讓這些人伸出手來把握歷史，再次讓它朝向美好明天的希望延伸。

我剛剛接到了麥凱恩參議員極具風度的致電。他在這場大選中經(jīng)過了長時間的努力奮斗，而他為自己所深愛的這個國家奮斗的時間更長、過程更艱辛。他為美國做出了我們大多數(shù)人難以想像的犧牲，我們的生活也因這位勇敢無私的領(lǐng)袖所做出的貢獻而變得更美好。我向他和佩林州長所取得的成績表示祝賀，我也期待著與他們一起在未來的歲月中為復(fù)興這個國家的希望而共同努力。

我們的競選活動能有今天的規(guī)模，是因為辛勤工作的人們從自己的微薄積蓄中拿出錢來，捐出一筆又一筆5美元、10美元、20美元。而競選活動的聲勢越來越大則是源自那些年輕人，他們拒絕接受認為他們這代人冷漠的荒誕說法；他們離開家、離開親人，從事報酬微薄、極其辛苦的工作；同時也源自那些已經(jīng)不算年輕的人們，他們冒著嚴寒酷暑，敲開陌生人的家門進行競選宣傳；更源自數(shù)百萬的美國民眾，他們自動自發(fā)地組織起來，證明了在兩百多年以后，民有、民治、民享的政府并未從地球上消失。這是你們的勝利。

我知道你們的所做所為并不只是為了贏得大選，我也知道你們做這一切并不是為了我。你們這樣做是因為你們明白擺在面前的任務(wù)有多艱巨。因為即便我們今晚歡呼慶祝，我們也知道明天將面臨我們一生之中最為艱巨的挑戰(zhàn)——兩場戰(zhàn)爭、一個面臨危險的星球，還有百年來最嚴重的金融危機。今晚站在此地，我們知道伊拉克的沙漠里和阿富汗的群山中還有勇敢的美國子弟兵醒來，甘冒生命危險保護著我們。會有在孩子熟睡后仍難以入眠的父母，擔心如何償還月供、付醫(yī)藥費或是存夠錢送孩子上大學(xué)。我們亟待開發(fā)新能源、創(chuàng)造新的工作機會；我們需要修建新學(xué)校，還要應(yīng)對眾多威脅、修復(fù)與許多國家的關(guān)系。

前方的道路會十分漫長艱辛。我們可能無法在一年甚至一屆任期之內(nèi)實現(xiàn)上述目標，但我從未像今晚這樣滿懷希望，相信我們會實現(xiàn)。我向你們承諾——我們作為一個整體將會達成目標。

我們會遭遇挫折和不成功的開端。對于我作為總統(tǒng)所做的每項決定和政策，會有許多人持有異議，我們也知道政府并不能解決所有問題。但我會向你們坦陳我們所面臨的挑戰(zhàn)。我會聆聽你們的意見，尤其是在我們意見相左之時。最重要的是，我會請求你們參與重建這個國家，以美國221年來從未改變的唯一方式——一磚一瓦、胼手胝足。

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors.I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath.The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace.Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms.At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.So it has been.So it must be with this generation of Americans.That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood.Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred.Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.Homes have been lost;jobs shed;businesses shuttered.Our health care is too costly;our schools fail too many;and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics.Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our landthey will be met.On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things.The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit;to choose our better history;to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given.It must be earned.Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less.It has not been the path for the faint-heartedsome celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West;endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg;Normandy and Khe Sanh.Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life.They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions;greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.This is the journey we continue today.We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth.Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began.Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year.Our capacity remains undiminished.But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisionsnot only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth.We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology’s wonders to raise health care’s quality and lower its cost.We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories.And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age.All this we can do.And all this we will do.Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitionsthat the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply.The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it worksto spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of dayand that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous.The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our Gross Domestic Product, but on the reach of our prosperity;on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing hearteven greater cooperation and understanding between nations.We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan.With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet.We will not apologize for our way

of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken;you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness.We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindusknow that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy.To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history;but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow;to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds.And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders;nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect.For the world has changed, and we must change with it.As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains.They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages.We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service;a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves.And yet, at this momentit is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies.It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours.It is the firefighter’s courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent’s willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.Our challenges may be new.The instruments with which we meet them may be new.But those values upon which our success dependsthese things are old.These things are true.They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history.What is demanded then is a return to these truths.What is required of us now is a new era of responsibilitythe knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed-why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled.In the year of America’s birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river.The capital was abandoned.The enemy was advancing.The snow was stained with blood.At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:

“Let it be told to the future world...that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet [it].”

America.In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words.With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come.Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter;and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.奧巴馬就職演講

Good afternoon.It is a great honor for me to be here in Shanghai, and to have this opportunity to speak with all of you.I'd like to thank Fudan University's President Yang for his hospitality(好客)and his gracious（有禮貌的，親切的）welcome.I'd also like to thank our outstanding Ambassador（大使）, Jon Huntsman, who exemplifies the deep ties and respect between our nations.I don't know what he said, but I hope it was good.(Laughter.)

What I'd like to do is to make some opening comments, and then what I'm really looking forward to doing is taking questions, not only from students who are in the audience, but also we've received questions online, which will be asked by some of the students who are here in the audience, as well as by Ambassador Huntsman.And I am very sorry that my Chinese is not as good as your English, but I am looking forward to this chance to have a dialogue.This is my first time traveling to China, and I'm excited to see this majestic（雄偉壯麗的，威嚴的）country.Here, in Shanghai, we see the growth that has caught the attention of the world--the soaring skyscrapers, the bustling（熙攘的）streets and entrepreneurial（企業(yè)家的，創(chuàng)業(yè)者的）activity.And just as I'm impressed by these signs of China's journey to the 21st century, I'm eager to see those ancient places that speak to us from China's distant past.Tomorrow and the next day I hope to have a chance when I'm in Beijing to see the majesty of the Forbidden City and the wonder of the Great Wall.Truly, this is a nation that encompasses both a rich history and a belief in the promise of the future.The same can be said of the relationship between our two countries.Shanghai, of course, is a city that has great meaning in the history of the relationship between the United States and China.It was here, 37 years ago, that the Shanghai Communique opened the door to a new chapter of engagement between our governments and among our people.However, America's ties to this city--and to this country--stretch back further, to the earliest days of America's independence.In 1784, our founding father, George Washington, commissioned the Empress of China, a ship that set sail for these shores so that it could pursue trade with the Qing Dynasty.Washington wanted to see the ship carry the flag around the globe, and to forge new ties with nations like China.This is a common American impulse--the desire to reach for new horizons, and to forge new partnerships that are mutually beneficial.Over the two centuries that have followed, the currents of history have steered the relationship between our countries in many directions.And even in the midst of tumultuous winds, our people had opportunities to forge deep and even dramatic ties.For instance, Americans will never forget the hospitality shown to our pilots who were shot down over your soil during World War II, and cared for by Chinese civilians who risked all that they had by doing so.And Chinese veterans of that war still warmly greet those American veterans who return to the sites where they fought to help liberate China from occupation.A different kind of connection was made nearly 40 years ago when the frost between our countries began to thaw through the simple game of table tennis.The very unlikely nature of this engagement contributed to its success--because for all our differences, both our common humanity and our shared curiosity were revealed.As one American player described his visit to China--“[The]people are just like us…The country is very similar to America, but still very different.”

Of course this small opening was followed by the achievement of the Shanghai Communique, and the eventual establishment of formal relations between the United States and China in 1979.And in three decades, just look at how far we have come.In 1979, trade between the United States and China stood at roughly $5 billion--today it tops over $400 billion each year.The commerce affects our people's lives in so many ways.America imports from China many of the computer parts we use, the clothes we wear;and we export to China machinery that helps power your industry.This trade could create even more jobs on both sides of the Pacific, while allowing our people to enjoy a better quality of life.And as demand becomes more balanced, it can lead to even broader prosperity.In 1979, the political cooperation between the United States and China was rooted largely in our shared rivalry with the Soviet Union.Today, we have a positive, constructive and comprehensive relationship that opens the door to partnership on the key global issues of our time--economic recovery and the development of clean energy;stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and the scourge of climate change;the promotion of peace and security in Asia and around the globe.All of these issues will be on the agenda tomorrow when I meet with President Hu.And in 1979, the connections among our people were limited.Today, we see the curiosity of those ping-pong players manifested in the ties that are being forged across many sectors.The second highest number of foreign students in the United States come from China, and we've seen a 50 percent increase in the study of Chinese among our own students.There are nearly 200 “friendship cities” drawing our communities together.American and Chinese scientists cooperate on new research and discovery.And of course, Yao Ming is just one signal of our shared love of basketball--I'm only sorry that I won't be able to see a Shanghai Sharks game while I'm visiting.It is no coincidence that the relationship between our countries has accompanied a period of positive change.China has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty--an accomplishment unparalleled in human history--while playing a larger role in global events.And the United States has seen our economy grow along with the standard of living enjoyed by our people, while bringing the Cold War to a successful conclusion.There is a Chinese proverb: “Consider the past, and you shall know the future.” Surely, we have known setbacks and challenges over the last 30 years.Our relationship has not been without disagreement and difficulty.But the notion that we must be adversaries is not predestined--not when we consider the past.Indeed, because of our cooperation, both the United States and China are more prosperous and more secure.We have seen what is possible when we build upon our mutual interests, and engage on the basis of mutual respect.And yet the success of that engagement depends upon understanding--on sustaining an open dialogue, and learning about one another and from one another.For just as that American table tennis player pointed out--we share much in common as human beings, but our countries are different in certain ways.I believe that each country must chart its own course.China is an ancient nation, with a deeply rooted culture.The United States, by comparison, is a young nation, whose culture is determined by the many different immigrants who have come to our shores, and by the founding documents that guide our democracy.Those documents put forward a simple vision of human affairs, and they enshrine several core principles--that all men and women are created equal, and possess certain fundamental rights;that government should reflect the will of the people and respond to their wishes;that commerce should be open, information freely accessible;and that laws, and not simply men, should guarantee the administration of justice.Of course, the story of our nation is not without its difficult chapters.In many ways--over many years--we have struggled to advance the promise of these principles to all of our people, and to forge a more perfect union.We fought a very painful civil war, and freed a portion of our population from slavery.It took time for women to be extended the right to vote, workers to win the right to organize, and for immigrants Dr.Martin Luther King could stand on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and ask that our nation live out the true meaning of its creed.That's why immigrants from China to Kenya could find a home on our shores;why opportunity is available to all who would work for it;and why someone like me, who less than 50 years ago would have had trouble voting in some parts of America, is now able to serve as its President.And that is why America will always speak out for these core principles around the world.We do not seek to impose any system of government on any other nation, but we also don't believe that 我們多種族混居是一種優(yōu)勢。我們是一個由基督徒、穆斯林、猶太教徒、印度教徒和無神論者共同組成的國家。我們吸收了各種文化的精髓，從世界的每個角落學(xué)習(xí)。因為我們經(jīng)歷過內(nèi)戰(zhàn)和種族隔離的痛苦洗禮，并在黑暗中更加堅強和團結(jié)，我們無法保證，但是我們相信憎恨終將消弭，分隔終將散去。隨著世界越來越緊密地聯(lián)系在一起，我們共同的人性將顯露出來，美國必須承擔引領(lǐng)新時代和平的重任。

對于穆斯林世界，我們將基于共同的利益和信仰，尋找更好的合作之路。對于那些在世界各個地方挑起沖突或一味批評西方不良影響的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)者：你的人民評判你的依據(jù)是你建立了什么，而不是破壞了什么。對于那些依靠腐敗和欺騙并壓制異議而追求權(quán)利的人們：你們站在了人類歷史的對立面。如果你們能張開緊握的拳頭，我們也將伸出友誼之手。

對于那些貧窮的人們，我們保證和你們一起建設(shè)繁茂的農(nóng)場和干凈的水源，滋養(yǎng)那些饑寒交迫的身體和心靈。對于那些與我們一樣相對富裕的國家，我們不能再對外界的苦難漠不關(guān)心，更不能繼續(xù)大肆索取世界的資源。世界必須改變，我們都必須改變。

當我們審視前方的道路時，我們會感激那些跨越千山萬水來到這里的人們。今天，他們有話對我們說，也是安息在阿林頓國家公墓里的先烈們時刻提醒我們的。我們尊敬他們不僅因為是他們捍衛(wèi)了我們的自由，更因為他們正是奉獻精神的化身；他們致力于尋找遠高于自身的生命真諦。而此時，在這個特殊的時代，我們更需讓這種精神長存。

因為歸根結(jié)底，政府所能做的，也是必須做到的，是體現(xiàn)每個美國人的信念和決心，這也是這個國家賴以生存的精神力量。這種力量是洪災(zāi)泛濫時，陌生人之間的溫暖善舉；是經(jīng)濟困難時期，人們自損利益保全朋友工作的無私忘我。這是消防員們毅然沖入濃煙火海的勇氣，也是父母培養(yǎng)孩子的無私之心，這些都決定了我們的命運。

或許，我們今日遇到挑戰(zhàn)前所未有，所有的情況完全陌生。但是，我們賴以走向成功的價值觀從未改變——誠實、勤勉、勇敢、公正、寬容、好學(xué)、忠貞和愛國。我們的歷史亦由這些真理推進，亙古不變。如今，我們面對的是一個全新的責任時代——人人都需重視，對我們自己，我們的國家乃至整個世界，都有一份責任。我們會欣然接受這份責任，人生也正因此而充實。

這是公民的價值和承諾。

這是我們信心的源泉——上帝賜予我們知識以應(yīng)對無常的命運。

這是我們所崇尚的自由與信念的真諦——這就是為什么今天，不同膚色，不同信仰的男女老少在此匯聚一堂；這就是為什么六十年前，一位父親走入餐廳甚至無人理睬，而今天他的兒子可以站在這里，在你們面前許下最莊嚴的誓言。

所以讓我們記住這一天，記住自己，記住為此的付出。在我們的國家誕生之初，先輩們在最寒冷的日子里，圍聚在結(jié)冰的河邊靠微弱的篝火取暖。離鄉(xiāng)背井，后有敵軍，鮮血染紅了白雪。就在革命的道路如此模糊，意志也開始躊躇之時，我們的國父有這樣幾句話：

“告訴未來的世界……當一切陷入寒冬，萬物俱滅，只有希望和勇氣可以長存……這座城市和這個國家，在共同的危機下團結(jié)起來，共同面對前方的艱難?！?/p>

美國，面對我們共同的危機，在這艱難的寒冬，讓我們牢記那些永恒的字句。懷著希望和美德，讓我們再一次勇敢地面對冰冷的現(xiàn)實，迎接任何可能的風浪。讓我們的子孫傳唱，當我們面對挑戰(zhàn)時，我們沒有怯懦、沒有退縮，更沒有踟躕不前。我們在上帝的關(guān)愛下眺望遠方，我們在自由的道路上繼續(xù)前進，我們的精神將永遠閃耀著光芒。
