I once came across an American tourist. She said, “China has a history of five thousand years, but the US only has a history of 200 years. Five thousand years ago, China took the lead in the world, and now it is the US that is leading.”My heart was deeply touched by these words. It is true that we're still a developing nation, but it doesn't mean that we can despise ourselves. We have such a long-standing history, we have such abundant resources, we have such intelligent and diligent people, and we have enough to be proud of. We have reasons to say proudly：we are sure to take the lead in the world in the future again, for our problems are big, but our ambition is even bigger, our challenges are great, but our will is even greater.

I am Chinese. I have inherited black hair and black eyes. I have inherited the virtues of my ancestors. I have also taken over responsibility. I am sure, that wherever I go, whatever I do, I shall never forget that I am Chinese!

And they look so beautiful. But my mother says, they’re really smart, but it doesn’t fit you, your main work is study. I have no words. One day, I was surfing on the internet, my parents showed their disapproval to me.

In fact, there are always many things difficult to judge whether they are right or not. Can we say that classical music is absolutely better than rock? Can we say that jeans are better than sport trousers? What is more, Surfing on the Internet does not mean that we are going to overlook our lessons. But many parents make their children accept their points of view on everything, for they want to protect us from making any mistakes.

To be senior school students, We have our own point of views. It is important that we should be contained to make mistakes, which we can learn much from. if our parents can learn to understand the way we think and do things, or meet us half way at the right time, the generation gap may be narrowed. We must understand their love as well. Only by understanding can we forgive others for their mistakes.

I want to tell all the people whether you are a child or a parent, generous and understanding can solve the problem of generation gap.

As we know, nearly 75% of the Earth surface is covered with water, But about 97% of this huge amount is sea water or salt water. Man can only drink and use the rest 3%, but most of it has been polluted.

There are more than 400 cities poor with water in China. Millions of people don’t have enough water for drinking, many of them die because of lack of water . There are many big factories in China. They put the dirty and poisonous water in the river, such as the Yellow River, the Chang Jiang River, the Yangtze River and so on. It pollutes the river and makes people have many strange diseases. Many people don’t know how important the water is. They often think: I pay for the water I used, it’s none of others business. How foolish and how selfish the thought is. They don’t turn off the tap when they finish washing their hands in the public toilet because the water is free-paying. Most of the students in the university use big basins of water to wash fruits . Because they have paid a lot for the room fee. Some of the middle school students use the water for drinking to play jokes on others just for fun. But who has thought about our life in the future? Who has thought about the people without water? Who has thought about the future of the world?

Why don’t people know how to save it until we have lost it? Why don’t people know how important the water is until the last drop of water becomes our tears? Let’s save the water, for you, for me , for the future.

Reuse the water which you wash the fruits to clean the toilets. Reuse the water which you wash your face to clean the floor and furniture. Reuse the water which you wash the rice to water the flowers. I think it’s the good way to save water. It not only saves water but also saves money.

The water is just like our blood. To save water is to save our lives. Let’s keep every drop of water, for the people who don’t have enough water for drinking, for ourselves, for our children and children’s children。

I am losing friends left and right, well, actually, only left. Some friendships, however, have been strengthened during this election.

When I was 6, I learned a song: “Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other's gold.” Even as a child, I was a born raconteur, so I always had lots of friends. But, by the time I got to fourth grade, I was already getting into political brawls. Early on, I began living my politically active mother's joke, “My name, it opens some doors and closes others.”

I learned to tone it down a bit by the time I got to college. As a theater major, it was fun in an acting class one day, when we each had to pretend to be another student. I chose to mimic a beautiful petite girl with long dark hair. She was my polar opposite, this former cheerleader-turned-hippie-princess named Michelle. She got a kick out of my impression of her. I thought it was cool that she could laugh at herself. We began a friendship that has brought us to the present day.

Yet we were always opposites. I am Roman Catholic, she is Jewish. I am tall, she is short. One rainy afternoon on campus, Michelle insisted on carrying the umbrella for both of us, (I don't think I stood up straight until the next day!)

Back then, she was as passionate a Democrat as I was a Republican. However, my friend and I still had something in common that was more important than all the differences. We shared the same values and they showed up in a dozen little ways. That is why we are friends almost 30 years later. Furthermore, she had been moving in my direction politically before, but Sept. 11, 20xx, brought us to a new level of communication. We have bonded even more during this election.

Sadly, I also have re-evaluated some other friendships as tensions increased due to the Kerry-Edwards demagoguery. This is the first time in memory that I've even been appalled by both spouses of the Democratic ticket. I rather liked Tipper Gore and Hadassa Lieberman. I thought they were sweet. And that's the way I used to feel about my liberal pals. But, now a Teresa Heinz-Kerry-like irrationality/Elizabeth Edwards snotty innuendo has infected some of them -- and it makes them unpleasant to be around.

This election may leave those friendships in its wake. The outlook is definitely not good for their Christmas card inclusion.

Sept. 11, Iraq, the demonization of Israel by Kerry's European fans, the beheadings -- all of the latter just doesn't seem to change the '90s mentality of those I know who are voting for the Democratic Party ticket. Like Kerry, they still seem to consider the United States' life-and-death struggle a nuisance. These liberal friends of mine are certainly not bad people, but deep down, they still don't get that we are at war with a greater evil than any of us has ever known. Combined with the extremism culturally on the left, these people are becoming more than a nuisance themselves.

The sobering fact is that these friendships are just too taxing (in both senses of that word). Those relationships have become like old prom dresses in that they just don't fit anymore. There comes a point where some associations can become a fire hazard in one's closet. It may be time to do spring cleaning, even if the season is autumn.

Sure, friends can't agree on everything, nor are they supposed to but though I may think someone's a nice person, fun, etc., increasingly deep differences in our world view can't be ignored in these frightening times.

Three decades later, Michelle is no longer the shorter-than-me actress who insisted on carrying the umbrella as we walked to class, though she is still shorter than me. But she and I easily walk together under an umbrella of shared concerns. A few weeks ago we sat side by side at a most moving event celebrating Jewish and Christian support of Israel and each other.

Yet, we still live very different lives. My college friend has been married for 25 years to the love of her life, the mother of three and an executive in an entertainment corporation. And meanwhile her single free-lancing writer/actress friend, even after all these years still does impressions of her only in print now.

Happily, others have also come along to become comrades in arms this election. They represent a diversity in lifestyle that would warm any liberal's heart (although said liberal wouldn't warm our hearts). There's Genie the stockbroker, Cathy the casting director, Robin the mom of one of my former acting students, Sally the daughter of one of my mother's old friends and many others. Their e-mail messages and calls let me know that though other friendships may wither during this election, I'm hardly alone. They all have a point of view that enables us to skip to shorthand. (“Did you read Drudge?” “Yep!”) All of these women make up my own personal non-elitist version of “The View, The Conservative Cut.”

Yes, now those old children's lyrics resonate with a new meaning in “Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold.” Regretfully, without shared values even after this tumultuous election of 20xx, some friendships may have turned to a tin that rings hollow in these perilous times.

By the way, I recently chatted with one of those former Brownies who sang with me so long ago, She is a “security mom.” She is voting for George W. Bush and she will definitely be included on my Christmas card list.

My Definition of Success

“Once upon a time，there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. To all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each next to impossible. One day, into the king's palace came a handsome young prince...” Well, you know the rest. The three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess's hand triumphantly.

And the ending is always the same, finishing with the line “And they live happily every after.”

Why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, I would say, so unimaginative? How can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? Because, I think, it is a typical success story. It is highly philosophical and symbolic. By implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.

The story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. The reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. If a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term “success”, to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give another analogy.

If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely David Beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules by not allowing Arsenal's defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.

The concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. Something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. In acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. That's why we greatly admire Stephen Hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.

I myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.But I chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. Now here I am. If I come out first, it will be a great success for me. If I come out last-I hope this will not be the case-but if I come out last, I will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. For me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because I have truly gained by participating.

Let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. You my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. The ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.

It had to be someone who was humorous by nature and fluent in English. Suddenly, all eyes turned to me, and I knew I would have to be the dwarf. To my great surprise and delight, once on stage, I was totally absorbed in the performance and my humorous nature was put to full use. As the dwarf, I was a big hit.

Yes, each of us is only one among millions of others, but each of us is an individual and each of us is unique. Cultivating our individuality will transform our lives, making of them a kaleidoscope of new colors and textures.

A world deprived of diversity would be a bland and boring place. The real tragedy is not being short or shy or ugly, but having your identity lost in a world in which everyone is a clone of a model cool boy or a flawless charming girl.

Given a choice, I would rather be ugly than live in such a world. I'd rather be a genuine dwarf accompanying a Snow White than be a Snow White among nothing but Snow Whites. I would rather be myself. I would contribute my individual and unique colors to create a more diverse universe. Please, be yourself.

although the XX olympics are still three years away, another special competition has already started in beijing.this time, the competitors are not the athletes from all over the world, but the people living in beijing.the special competition is not held in a stadium, but in every street and every corner of beijing.i suppose some of you may have already guessed what the special competition is.yes, it is the competition of protecting our environment and creating a green beijing for the XX olympic games.someone may ask who is our rival in this competition? the modern los angeles, the charming sydney, or the historic athens? no, none of them.the real rival is ourselves.it is our bad habits of neglecting to protect environment in our daily life.several years ago, i was very lucky to have an opportunity to live in the united states for about two years.i not only enjoyed the beautiful environment there, but also appreciated the american people's active way of protecting their environment.now, whenever the environment protection is mentioned, a beautiful view of california will arise in my mind: white clouds flying acrothe blue sky, green grassplot sprinkled with colorful flowers and small animals playing happily among the trees.i remember that at the beginning of my coming to america, i often went to my father's working place, the united states geological survey, to have fun.each time i found a lot of people riding bicycles to their offices.among the cyclists, an old man with white hair attracted my attention.curiously, i asked my father,“ why does the old man ride his bike to work every day? doesn't he have enough money to buy a car?” father laughed, “no, not because of money.actually, he is one of the greatest scientists in the world.he can afford to buy a motorcade if he likes.he is just an environmentalist and usually doesn't drive unlegoing shopping, or in bad weather.in america, there are a lot of environmentalists, who actively protect their environment.for example, in palo alto city we are living now, there is even a bicycle-to-work day on may 19th every year to encourage people to decrease air pollution caused by cars”.later, i also learnt another interesting fact of environment protection there.in some states of america, in order to decrease air pollution, save energy and reduce traffic jams, state governments encourage people to take buses to work or to share a car among several people.they even set special “diamond lanes” in some main streets, which are only for the vehicles with 2 or more people.the positive actions of american people and the effective measures the american government takes in environment protection fully won my respects and deeply affected my consciousnein environment protection.when i was back in china, people often asked me: “ what do you think of america?” i always bolt out:“ wonderful, especially the beautiful environment.” frankly speaking, after several years, the faces of my american teachers and friends have gradually faded away from my mind, but the blue sky, green graand lovely animals in california often arise in my mind, and became my dream of visiting there again.the XX olympics provide us with the opportunity to publicize and practise environment protection in beijing.is it possible for beijing to is it possible for beijing to become as beautiful as california? the answer is “yes”, but the dream needs every beijing citizen's full support and active moves to accomplish.from now on, if every student who is driven to school can take bus or ride bicycle to school once a week, if every car owner goes to work in a car pool once a week, we can make a difference.if everyone can actively protect the environment in our daily life, the blue sky, green graand lovely animals in california will appear in beijing.tiny streams can combine into a vast ocean, small trees can together be an immense forest.beijing is often described as a beautiful and aged picture.if every beijing citizen adds a trait of green on the picture, the whole beijing will become an ocean of green.let us unite together to win the competition of environment protection in beijing, and present the world a big gold medal.that is “green beijing, great olympics ”

多少年前有幸在美國加州度過的一段時光，既讓我享受了那里宜人的環(huán)境，更讓我領(lǐng)略了當(dāng)?shù)厝嗣窀叨鹊沫h(huán)保意識。每當(dāng)說到城市環(huán)保，我的眼前總會浮現(xiàn)出加州那蔚藍(lán)的天空、明媚的陽光、碧綠的草地以及嬉戲在樹枝間的松鼠、彩蝶和百靈鳥。

記得剛到美國時，常去爸爸工作的美國地質(zhì)調(diào)查局玩耍，每次均能看到許多人騎自行車上下班，而其中一位滿頭白發(fā)的騎車?yán)夏耆耍鹆宋业暮闷?。我問爸爸，“那個爺爺為何總騎車上班，是否沒錢買車?”爸爸笑道：“沒錢買車?嘿，說出來嚇?biāo)滥?，他可是世界上頂級的大科學(xué)家。要論錢，他能買一個車隊(duì)呢?！?“那他咋不買車呢?騎車多累呀!” “他有車，但平時除非下雨或購物，一般不去開。在美國有許多人都是環(huán)保主義者，為了節(jié)約能源和減少汽車尾氣對大氣的污染，他們用實(shí)際行動倡導(dǎo)人們盡量少開車。而我們所居住的這座美國城市，還特別將每年的5月19日定成了'騎車上班日'，以支持和宣傳這種有效的環(huán)保行為。”

后來，我還在經(jīng)常的搭車出行中獲知了他們的另一件環(huán)保趣事：在美國的許多州，政府為了鼓勵大家多坐公交車或多少人合用一輛車，以節(jié)省能源和緩解交通壓力，在城市內(nèi)一些主干道路上開辟有專門的'鉆石車道'，只有乘坐了二人或二人以上的車輛才從此通過。美國人民這種自覺的環(huán)保意識和政府有效的環(huán)保措施使我從內(nèi)心對他們充滿了敬佩。并深刻地影響了我的環(huán)保理念。

回國后，常常有人問我：“美國好嗎?”我總會脫口而出：“確實(shí)好!最好的是環(huán)境?！闭f句真心話，回國三、四年，美國那邊同學(xué)和老師的面孔已經(jīng)逐漸模糊，但加州那宜人的自然環(huán)境，卻每每清晰地浮現(xiàn)在我的眼前，成為我最深的記憶和期盼故地重游的緣由，也成了我心目中北京環(huán)境的藍(lán)圖。XX奧運(yùn)會為我們倡導(dǎo)和實(shí)施北京的環(huán)保提供了契機(jī)，北京能否有朝一日也擁有象加州那樣美麗的環(huán)境?答案是肯定的。但需要我們以真正的環(huán)保之心和切實(shí)的環(huán)保行動去一步一步地實(shí)現(xiàn)。

從現(xiàn)在開始，如果每一位有車的朋友一星期能少開

一、兩次車，每個讓家長用車接送的同學(xué)一周能主動讓家長少接送一兩趟而改乘公車或騎自行車，我們就會有擁有更多的藍(lán)天……。只要我們每一位北京市民都能夠自覺的從身邊的環(huán)保小事做起，加州的藍(lán)天、白云和綠草地就會在北京安家，美國的松鼠、彩蝶和百靈鳥就會來北京落戶。
