別讓“菜英文”太張狂

曾看到一則新聞，標(biāo)題是：“臺(tái)中市的‘菜英文’出了大洋相”。我知道，臺(tái)灣有個(gè)“蔡英文”，臺(tái)北人，民進(jìn)黨黨主席，因?yàn)椴辉阜艞墶芭_(tái)獨(dú)”主張，聲譽(yù)不佳。但此人姓“蔡”而非“菜”，難道在臺(tái)中市還有個(gè)“菜英文”？“菜英文”因何出了大洋相？閱讀新聞后才知道：臺(tái)中市環(huán)保部門印制的英文公函錯(cuò)誤連篇，如Envelope（信封）詞尾少一個(gè)e，Taichung City（臺(tái)中市）的y變成了V，等等，遭致一片罵聲。有人說：臺(tái)中市的“菜英文”盡出洋相，給臺(tái)灣丟了臉。原來新聞標(biāo)題用了諧音修辭，“菜英文”即水平很差的英文?！安恕睘榫W(wǎng)絡(luò)用語，是“差”“笨”“愚蠢”的意思。

其實(shí)，大陸也有“菜英文”，也在各地出洋相。北京首都機(jī)場(chǎng)曾有一個(gè)專賣店，英文牌子是“Ants and Crafts”。據(jù)說，某國外游客來中國，看到該店店名十分感慨，中國真了不起，還有專賣螞蟻的地方。結(jié)果走進(jìn)去一看，沒發(fā)現(xiàn)任何螞蟻，全是手工藝品。原來，店名將“Art”(工藝品)誤成了“Ant”(螞蟻)。這種差錯(cuò)各地都大量存在。據(jù)報(bào)載，來華訪問的馬來西亞華人鄧先生，曾慕名前往西安秦始皇兵馬俑博物館參觀，在博物館停車場(chǎng)附近隨便轉(zhuǎn)轉(zhuǎn)，就發(fā)現(xiàn)多家商鋪牌匾英文有錯(cuò)，如restaurant(餐館)誤成了rsetaurant，agency(機(jī)構(gòu))誤成了anency，jade(玉器)誤成了gade，commercial(商業(yè))誤成了coammercial，等等。弄得鄧先生直發(fā)呆。

這些都是低級(jí)的拼寫錯(cuò)誤，避免很簡(jiǎn)單，只要端正態(tài)度，仔細(xì)翻翻英語詞典即可。最應(yīng)引起注意的，是被稱為Chinglish（中式英語）的錯(cuò)誤，即由于沒有準(zhǔn)確理解英文單詞含義、用法不符合英文表達(dá)習(xí)慣或不符合英語國家文化習(xí)俗而出現(xiàn)的問題。

漢語中有許多同音異義詞，在把這些詞翻譯成英文時(shí)，一定要細(xì)加辨析，弄清每個(gè)含義所對(duì)應(yīng)的英文，否則會(huì)出現(xiàn)張冠李戴的問題。我曾在超市買到一袋“小核桂圓”，包裝袋上的英文介紹將“核”翻譯成了“nucleus”?？吹竭@個(gè)單詞，相信外國人也會(huì)暗暗發(fā)笑。nucleus雖然可譯成中文的“核”，但它指的是原子核，在說到核電站、核爆炸時(shí)常用到。桂圓等水果中的核，對(duì)應(yīng)的英文單詞是pit或stone。就出現(xiàn)頻率而言，Export可能位居這類錯(cuò)誤的首位。Export即“出口”，但它指的是“外貿(mào)出口”。許多機(jī)場(chǎng)、車站、地鐵、超市等公共場(chǎng)所，把供人行走的“出口”譯成了Export。據(jù)說，這些個(gè)“Export”已成為“國際玩笑”，常被人用來嘲笑中國的“菜英文”。其實(shí)，公共場(chǎng)所供人行走的“出口”，對(duì)應(yīng)的單詞Exit。

英文中有一些獨(dú)特的表達(dá)習(xí)慣，不能用相關(guān)的中文意思生硬地對(duì)譯，否則也會(huì)鬧笑話。一位英國朋友來到北京某公共場(chǎng)所，一時(shí)內(nèi)急，向一個(gè)標(biāo)有restroom 的房間走了進(jìn)去，結(jié)果一個(gè)女服務(wù)員走上前來和他熱情地搭話，英國朋友十分地尷尬。不過，馬上就明白了，這是休息室而非廁所。翻譯者可能認(rèn)為“rest”即休息，“room”即房間，便望文生義地把restroom誤解成休息室了。殊不知在英語中restroom指的是廁所，休息室一般作Lounge。北京一家收費(fèi)廁所，門口的標(biāo)示牌為fee-paying public toilet。在英文中，fee-paying即付費(fèi)，public即公共，toilet即廁所，有關(guān)人員便根據(jù)中文意思“硬拼”出個(gè)fee-paying public toilet來，以為它表示的意思是“收費(fèi)的公共廁所”。其實(shí)，外國人看到這句話會(huì)理解成“上完廁所可以給錢”，意思是在這里上廁所非但不收費(fèi)，反而會(huì)給錢。在國外，大部分國家的廁所都是收費(fèi)的，一般情況下，標(biāo)明toilet即可，大家都知是收費(fèi)的。

許多英文單詞，除了詞匯意義之外，還有英語國家所賦予它的民族文化含義。如果不了解這些單詞背后的文化含義，而按中文意思對(duì)譯，也會(huì)鬧笑話。白象牌電池是中國著名品牌，據(jù)說它剛剛進(jìn)入英語國家時(shí)就曾遭到嘲笑。因?yàn)榇穗姵赜⑽拿Q中的White Elephant（白象）一詞，在英文中有“大而無用并且會(huì)吃垮你的東西”的含義。類似的問題，在各地的公共場(chǎng)所也經(jīng)常見到。我曾在上海一公交車站站點(diǎn)見到一塊英文告示牌，上面寫著Old People First,稍懂英文的人都明白，它的意思是“老人優(yōu)先”。如果真有外國年長(zhǎng)者來乘車，看到這塊牌子一定會(huì)心里不爽。中國有“尊老”的傳統(tǒng)，“老”含有敬意，年長(zhǎng)者一般是不介意被稱為“老人”（Old People）的。但英語國家則不同，他們渴望年輕，害怕“老”，如果被稱為“老人”是會(huì)產(chǎn)生抵觸情緒的。中文中的“老人優(yōu)先”，英語一般說成Senior Citizens First(年長(zhǎng)者優(yōu)先)。再如，我們經(jīng)常在大型公共場(chǎng)所的扶手電梯旁，看到“小心碰頭”的警示牌，許多地方把它翻譯成“Watch out，Knock Head”（當(dāng)心，碰頭）。外國人看到Knock Head也會(huì)發(fā)笑，因?yàn)檫@是一句英文俚語，意思是“笨蛋”?！靶⌒呐鲱^”就成了“小心，笨蛋”。英文是給外國人看的，是為了給外國朋友提供生活、工作上的便利，如果我們讓蹩腳的“菜英文”去接待外國人，效果可想而知。建議有關(guān)人員，多請(qǐng)教專家如何？建議有關(guān)部門，加大監(jiān)管力度如何？
