Push poll is an opinion poll whose real purpose is to influence people’s opinions rather than to collect information about them. In essence, a push poll is something approaching a smear campaign masquerading as an opinion poll, a push poll typically involves phoning very large numbers of voters and,in the guise of doing a survey to find out how certain pieces of information may affect their voting preferences ,feeding-bottle the false or damaging information about a particular candidate.the idea the is to ‘push ’them away from any rival candidate and steer them towards the candidate that the caller supports.
The essential difference between a push poll and a valid opinion poll is that the latter merely attempts to elicit opinions, whilst the former aims to change and influence them.In a push poll, large numbers of respondents are contacted, but little or no effort is made to collect and analyze response data because no-one is really interested in this information once the phone call is over, the main aim having been to negatively influence the targeted candidate.“推手民調(diào)”和真正的民調(diào)之間的本質(zhì)區(qū)別是,民意調(diào)查只是為了收集民意,而“推手”調(diào) 查是為了改變和影響民意。
The 'bathtub effect' is perhaps the most commonly reported finding in the literature on memory for words.People remember the beginnings and ends of words better than the middles, as if the word were a person lying in a bathtub, with their head out of the water at one end and their feet out at the other. And, just as in a bathtub the head is further out of the water and more prominent than the feet, so the beginnings of words are, on average, better remembered than the ends.“浴缸效應(yīng)”大概是與背單詞有關(guān)的文獻(xiàn)記錄中最常見(jiàn)的一個(gè)現(xiàn)象了。 For example: His name is long and rarely seen.I can only recall it begins with “Ja” and end with “son”.Caught by the bathtub effect again.
“gangnam Style” is a Korean neologism mainly associated with upscale fashion and lavish lifestyle associated with trendsetters in Seoul’s Gangnam district, which is considered the most affluent part of the metropolitan area.In colloquial usage, it is comparable to the English slang terms “swag” or “yolo”.Gangnam Style(江南風(fēng)格,更廣為人知的說(shuō)法為“江南style”)是一個(gè)韓語(yǔ)新詞,多用來(lái)形容首爾江南區(qū)走在時(shí)尚前沿、過(guò)著奢華生活的“弄潮兒”們。 Gangnam Style相當(dāng)于英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)中的swag(拽)或yolo(you only live once,意為“人生只有一次”)。
Possible holders of an MRS degree are women who attend college just to meet potential husbands with high social standing and future earning potential.
This phenomenon, which occurs predominantly at private Christian institutions, has turned America’s ‘Bible colleges’ into ‘bridal colleges’.On these campuses, engagement is not only an eagerly awaited(and accepted)part of a relationship, but marriage is often promoted and planned around graduation. Although independence and career goals for women are now accepted on college campuses, evidence still exists of women going the old-fashioned route: investing their money in pursuing a future lifestyle rather than in an academic conquest.
The lipstick effect is the theory that when facing an economic crisis consumers will be more willing to buy less costly luxury goods.Instead of buying expensive fur coats, women will buy expensive lipstick.
The underlying assumption is that consumers will buy luxury goods even if there is a crisis. When consumer trust in the economy is dwindling, consumers will buy goods that have less impact on their available funds.Obviously men will not be buying lipstick, but could be tempted by expensive beer or smaller, less costly gadgets.
Hiberdating means dating in the winter months, or the situation that someone ignores all their other friends when they are dating a boyfriend/girlfriend.The second meaning is more popular. The word hiberdating is a blending of the word “hibernating” and “dating”, which means a person is in a state of inactivity(hibernating)among friends when dating someone. For example: I haven't seen or heard from Jennifer since she started hiberdating Teddy four months ago.
Living Apart Together(LAT)is a term for couples who, while committed to each other, decide to have separate homes rather than one shared residence.“分開同居”(Living Apart Together,英文縮寫為L(zhǎng)AT)指一對(duì)情侶保持固定的情感關(guān)系但卻不住在一起。
There are three approaches LAT couples can take, concerning decision to keep separate domestic residences. The majority are the “gladly apart”, along with the “regretfully apart”(due to work commitments, family responsibilities, legal or residency requirements, or other reasons)and the “undecidedly apart”(committed but not especially moving towards cohabitation at the time). Those gladly apart couples claim that their motives include: LAT is having kept their relationship fresh.“分開同居”能夠讓他們的關(guān)系時(shí)刻保持新鮮感。Having both an intimate relationship and one's own space is a treat. The anticipation of time together is always being special.
Having bases in two cultures – for example both a busy city and a country village.
Freedom to do things without consultation, and the freedom not to do things in one's own abode. Independent finances and homes meaning that financial dispute and negotiation is not a source of friction in the couple's relationship.
Ability to focus on work or one's own activities without interruption at times when one wishes to work.
It girl
It girl。An It girl or It-girl is a charming, sexy young woman who receives intense media coverage unrelated or disproportional to personal achievements. The reign of an “It girl” is usually temporary;some of the rising It girls will either become fully-fledged celebrities or their popularity will fade. The term “It boy”, much less frequently used, is the male equivalent. This term is unrelated to the abbreviation IT.It girl(或It-girl)指受到媒體密切關(guān)注、魅力無(wú)限、性感迷人的年輕女子,她們受到的關(guān)注與她們個(gè)人的成就沒(méi)有太多關(guān)聯(lián),或者關(guān)注度與其個(gè)人成就 極不匹配,中文多譯作“物質(zhì)女孩”或“名門無(wú)良女”。 這里的It跟我們通常所說(shuō)的信息工程(information technology)這個(gè)詞的縮寫IT一點(diǎn)關(guān)系都沒(méi)有。
The term was coined by English romance novelist and screenwriter Elinor Glyn to describe actress Clara Bow as she appeared in the 1927 Hollywood silent film It.Glyn described the term thus: “IT” is that quality possessed by some which drawstring all others with its magnetic force. With “IT” you win all men if you are a woman—all women if you are a man.“IT” can be a quality of the mind as well as a physical attraction.
Since 1927 the term has been extended beyond the world of film, referring to whoever in society, fashion or the performing arts was in vogue at the time, and eventually extending beyond young female performing artists to mere “media celebrities”.1927年以后,It girl這個(gè)說(shuō)法就不限于電影界了,它可以指社會(huì)上、時(shí)尚界或演藝界任何一個(gè)走在潮流前線的人,后來(lái)It girl的界限不斷延伸,從年輕的演藝明星到純粹的“媒體名人”,都可以用It girl來(lái)指代。
They look chic and sophisticated. They are soft and get hurt easily. They seem unbearably spoilt and can't take much pressure. They are the so-called “Strawberry Generation”.
The term was coined by a Taiwan writer in one of her books about office rules. It refers to the post-60s generation of office workers, who grew up in a protected environment and got easily dentedby life's lightest knocks.“草莓族”這個(gè)說(shuō)法是由一位臺(tái)灣作家在她一本關(guān)于辦公室法則的書中創(chuàng)造出來(lái)的,它指的是60年代后出生的辦公室職員,他們像草莓一樣是在多方保護(hù)的環(huán)境中長(zhǎng)大的,生活中輕微的碰撞就能讓他們受到傷害。
This expression is now finding its way into the mainland, and refers to young workers, of only child families, who have been active in the workforce for just a year or two. They are generally well educated but are self-centered and give too much importance to appearance and material comforts.
1.Stopping acting like a baby!Pull yourself together!
2.Chin up!Only two exams left.
Chin up或者keep your chin up 就是別灰心,別氣餒。
3.Be prepared for a rough time.And hang in there.
Hang in there 別泄氣,堅(jiān)持下去。
4.I'm sure it'll work out.
The plan worked out badly.
5.You can do anything if you really want to.That's the spirit!
That’s the spirit!
最后復(fù)習(xí)一下: pull oneself together 振作起來(lái) chin up 別灰心,別氣餒 hang in there 堅(jiān)持住 It'll work out.
That’s the spirit!
A family whose living members come from many generations, but with few members in each generation.
The rising divorce rate partly explains the growth of the 'beanpole' family. With almost one in two marriages ending in divorce, many adults have at least two families, each with a single child.
The term “l(fā)ever women” refers to wives or girlfriends who play their advantages to the full to help their husbands or boyfriends succeed in careers.Such women are compared to levers to lift their husbands or boyfriends.“杠桿女”指充分發(fā)揮自己的優(yōu)勢(shì)和特長(zhǎng)幫助老公或男友在事業(yè)上取得成功的女性。
More and more women now tend to seek a “budget husband” instead of wealthy men just as home buyers now look for budget houses rather than villas during the economic crisis.Although not earning a lot, the budget husbands don't have bad habits such as drinking, smoking or gambling and are family-oriented.
1.Thrift
Thrift is the foundation of all greatness. It is applied not only to money matters, but to everything else in life—the wise use of one's time, ability, and energy. In short, thrift is the scientific management of one's money, of one's time, of one's affairs, and of one's self.Thrift is the best word for us.It makes fortune. It uplifts character. It improves the quality of the individual. The exercise of thrift has a very healthful reaction upon all the other faculties. The habit of thrift denotes self-control.It is a proof that a man is not a hopeless victim of his weakness. It is a proof that he is the master of himself as well as of his finances.Thrift is an educator.A thrifty man thinks and plans. He has a program. He has a certain amount of independence. If you have cultivated thrift, it means that you have the ability to control your desires and that you are developing some of the grandest human qualities—self-reliance, independence, prudence, and foresight. We know that all great nations are founded on thrift. The ancient Roman Empire degenerated and came to an end when it ceased to be thrifty.Yet thrift does not require superior courage. It needs no fervent resolution, but only a little patient self-denial.And BEGIN is its device!

Remember, my son, you have to work.Whether you handle a pick or a pen, a wheel-barrow or a set of books, digging ditches or editing a paper, ringing an
auction bell or writing funny things, you must work.If you look around you will see the men who are the most able to live the rest of their days without work are the men who work the hardest.Don't be afraid of killing yourself with overwork. It is beyond your power to do that on the sunny side of thirty. They die sometimes, but it is because they quit work at six in the evening, and do not go home until two in the morning. It’s the interval that kills, my son.The work gives you an appetite for your meals;it lends solidity to your slumbers, it gives you a perfect and grateful appreciation of a holiday. There are young men who do not work, but the world is not proud of them.It does not know their names, even it simply speaks of them as “old So-and-So’s boy”.Nobody likes them;the great, busy world doesn’t know that they are there. So find out what you want to be and do, and take off your coat and make a dust in the world. The busier you are, the less harm you will be apt to get into, the sweeter will be your sleep, the brighter and happier your holidays, and the better satisfied will the world be with you.[注釋]

3.Books(選擇任意兩段背誦)
A man may usually be known by the books he reads, as well as by the company
for there is a companionship of books as well as of men;and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness;amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age.Men often discover their affinity to each other by the mutual love they have for a book—just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb, “Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdom in this: “Love me, love my book.” The book is a truer and higher bond of union.Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.A good book is often the best urn of a life, enshrining the best thoughts of which that life was capable;for the world of a man's life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words and golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our abiding companions and comforters.“They are never alone,” said Sir Philip Sidney, “that are accompanied by noble thoughts.” The good and true thought may in time of temptation be as an angel of mercy purifying and guarding the soul.It also enshrines the germs of action, for good words almost invariably inspire to good works.company: 陪伴 adversity: 不幸, 逆境
console : vt.

4.Jane Eyre
‘I tell you I must go!’ I retorted, roused to something like passion.‘Do you think I can stay to become nothing to you? Do you think I am an automaton?I have as much soul as you,it is my spirit that addresses your spirit;just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal, ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy.I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness--that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold
unfathomable lifeless abyss.I have sought it finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what--at last--I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge.I have wished to understand the hearts of men.I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux.A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth.Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart.Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be.I long to alleviate this evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life.I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.
9.The Four Freedoms
In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression―everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way―everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want―which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peace time life for its inhabitants―everywhere in the world. The forth is freedom from fear which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor--anywhere in the world.
10.Youth
by Samuel Ullman(選擇任意兩段背誦)
Youth is not just a stage of life;it is a state of mind.It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees;it is a matter of the will, a quality of imagination, a vigor of the emotions. It is the freshness of the deep spring of life.Youth means the predominance of courage over timidity, of adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair---these bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust.Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the love of wonder, the sweet amazement of the stars and the star like things, the undoubted challenge of events, the unfailing childlike appetite for what-next and the joy of the game of living. You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt, as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear, as young as your hope, as old as your despair.
11.Of Studies
by Francis Bacon Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.Their chief use for delight,is in privateness and retiring;for ornament, is in discourse;and for ability, is in the judgment and disposition of business.// For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one;but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs, come best from those that are learned.//To spend too much time in studies is sloth;to use them too much for ornament, is affectation;to make judgment wholly by their rules, is the humor of a scholar.// They perfect
nature, and are perfected by experience: for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need pruning by study;and studies themselves do give forth directions too much at large, except they be bounded in by experience.
12.The Joy of Life
Wise men of ancient times and successful men of today have told us that labor is sweet. Its reward is not material gain but what one becomes by it.Work does much more for us than just giving us a living. The real joys of life come from doing something and doing it well. All of us hope for success, but it is illusive and hard to keep.It nearly always slips away from one like sand through the fingers, like water through a leaky pail, unless it is held tight by hard work, day by day, night by night, year in year out.Everyone who fears failure should work harder and harder with a faithful heart as long as he lasts.13.True Nobility
by Ernest Hemingway
(選取任意兩段背誦)In a calm sea every man is a pilot. But all sunshine without shade, all pleasure without pain, is not life at all.Take the lot of the happiest----it is a tangled yarn.Bereavements and blessings, one following another, make us sad and blessed by turns.Even death itself makes life more loving.Men come closest to their true selves in the sober moments of life, under the shadows of sorrow and loss.In the affairs of life or of business, it is not intellect that tells so much as character, not brains so much as heart, not genius so much as self-control, patience, and discipline, regulated by judgment.I have always believed that the man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without. In an age of extravagance and waste, I wish I could show to the world how few the real wants of humanity are.To regret one's errors to the point of not repeating them is true repentance. There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man.The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self.

14.I have a dream(節(jié)選,選取任意三小段背誦)
I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident;that all men are created equal.”
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.I have a dream today.I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers.

The city as a center where ,any day in any year, there may be a fresh encounter with a new talents, a keen mind or a gifted specialist---this is essential to the life of a country. To play this role in our lives a city must have a soul---a university, a great art or music school, a cathedral or a great mosque or temple, a great laboratory or scientific center, as well as the libraries and museums and galleries that bring past and present together, a city must be a place where groups of women and men are seeking and developing the highest things they know.By Margaret Mead: World Enough 城市

1、Many people believe that they will be happy once they arrive at some specific goal they set for themselves. However, more often than not, once you arrive “ there” you will still feel dissatisfied, and move your “ there” vision to yet another point in the future.By always chasing after another “there,” you are never really appreciating what you already have right “here.” It is important for human beings to keep soberminded about the age-old drive to look beyond the place where you now stand. On one hand, your life is enhanced by your dreams and aspirations. On the other hand, these drives can pull you farther and farther from your enjoyment of your life right now.By learning the lessons of gratitude and abundance, you can bring yourself closer to fulfilling the challenge of living in the present.
2、Alan and Linda always dreamed of living “the good life.” Both from poor working-class families, they married young and set out to fulfill their mutual goal of becoming wealthy. They both worked very hard for years, amassing a small fortune, so they could move from their two-bedroom home to a palatial seven-bedroom home in the most upscale neighborhood. They focused their energies on accumulating all the things they believed signified abundance: membership in the local exclusive country club, luxury cars, designer clothing, and high-class society friends. No matter how much they accumulated, however, it never seemed to be enough. They were unable to erase the deep fear of scarcity both had acquired in childhood. They needed to learn the lesson of abundance. Then the stock market crashed in 1987, and Alan and Linda lost a considerable amount of money.A bizarre but costly lawsuit depleted another huge portion of their savings. One thing led to another, and they found themselves in a financial disaster.Assets needed to be sold, and eventually they lost the country club membership, the cars, and the house. It took several years and much hard work for Alan and Linda to land on their feet, and though they now live a life far from extravagant, they have taken stock of their lives and feel quite blessed.Only now, as they assess what they have left--a solid, loving marriage, their health, a dependable income, and good friends--do they realize that true abundance comes not from amassing, but rather from appreciating.
3、Once learning stops, vegetation sets in.It is a common fallacy to regard school as the only workshop for the acquisition of knowledge. On the contrary, learning should be a never-ending process, from the cradle to the grave. With the world ever changing so fast, the cease from learning for just a few days will make a person lag behind. What's worse, the animalistic instinct dormant deep in our subconsciousness will come to life, weakening our will to pursue our noble ideal, sapping our determination to sweep away obstacles to our success and strangling our desire for the refinement of our character.Lack of learning will inevitably lead to the stagnation of the mind, or even worse, its fossilization, Therefore, to stay mentally young, we have to take learning as a lifelong career.
4、A MODEL STUDENT 模范學(xué)生
Do you mind being called a bad student? Of course not.So far as I know, everybody intends to be(become)a model student. However, to be a model student is by no means an easy thing.First, he must do his best to obtain knowledge.A man without sufficient knowledge will not succeed.Secondly, he must remember to improve his health.Only a strong man can do great tasks.Thirdly, he should receive moral education. If his conduct is not good, no one will consider making friends with him.
5、HOW TO GET HAPPINESS 如何獲得快樂(lè)
There is no doubt that happiness is the most precious thing in the world.Without it, life will be empty and meaningless. If you wish to know how to get happiness, you must pay attention to the following two points.First, health is the secret of happiness(the key to happiness).Only a strong man can enjoy the pleasure of life.Secondly, happiness consists in contentment.A man who is dissatisfied with his present condition is always in distress.
As is well known, books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things. They increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. In other words, they are our good teachers and wise friends. This is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books.Reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books. It is true that we can derive benefits from good books. However, bad books will do us more harm than good.
7、THE VALUE OF TIME 愛(ài)惜時(shí)光
An English proverb says that time is money.I consider it(this)wrong. Why? Because we all know that we can earn money be work but can not in any way get back time(in anyway). For this reason, we may(can)say that time is more valuable than money. Many people do not know the value of time. It(this)is indeed a great pity.We must bear(keep)in mind that wasting time is equal to wasting your life.

9、Many students currently smoke and are still increasing.A survey revealed that two-fifths students of a school smoke, or even steal money to buy.For middle school students, smoking is more harmful than adults, which is not only harmful to the body, but also to the mind.Middle school students ,who are smoking, must realise that they are the future builders of a country. So what they should do is to give it up.
10、Not long after an old Chinese woman came back to China from her visit to her daughter in the States, she went to a city bank to deposit the US dollars her daughter gave her.At the bank counter, the clerk checked each note carefully to see if the money was real.It made the old lady out of patience. At last she could not hold any more, uttering.“Trust me, Sir, and trust the money. They are real US dollars. They are directly from America.”

11、She kindled a third match.Again shot up the flame; and now she was sitting under a most beautiful Christmas tree ,far larger, and far more prettily decked out, than the one she had seen last Christmas eve through the glass doors of the rich merchant's house.Hundreds of wax-tapers lighted up the green branches, and tiny painted figures, such as she had seen in the shop-windows, looked down from the tree upon her.The child stretched out her hands towards them in delight, and in that moment the lights of the match warm quenched; still, however, the Christmas candles burned higher and higher, she beheld them beaming like stars in heaven; one of them fell, the lights streaming behind it like a long, fiery tail.?Now some one is dying,? said the little girl, softly, for she had been told by her old grandmother, the only person who had ever been kind to her, and who was now dead that whenever a star falls an immortal spirit returns to the God who gave it.She struck yet another match against the wall; it flamed up, and surrounded by its light, appeared before her that same dear grandmother, gentle and loving as always, but bright and happy as she had never looked during her lifetime.
