Competition or Cooperation?

Competition and cooperation seem to be two opposites, which we often choose between.Some hold that the former is more important, while others prefer the latter one.As far as I am concerned, competition and cooperation both have its own advantages, and it’s better for the two to coexist so as to achieve a win-win situation.There is no doubt that competition plays an important role in the process of human revolution.In earlier times, productivity is extremely low, so people have to compete for the limited natural resources.In present-day society, competition is everywhere.To get a promotion, people compete;to live a better live, people compete;to prove themselves, people compete.In a word, people have to compete all the time, because only the stronger ones can survive.As to individuals, competition helps enhance their abilities.Competition makes people creative.Competition is a product of the development of society and it gives people a sense of the pursuit of excellence.This is people’s inborn nature.Without competition, people would remain idle and have no ambition.Many people are fond of competition because it enables them to bring their knowledge or skills into full play.Besides, competition is the driving force of social progress and it also contributes to a society with abundant vigor.For example, competition in every sector of the economy will push the competitors to produce marketable goods of high quality and courteous service, which as a result lead to technological development and staff proficiency.However, cooperation can not be neglected.Marx said that cooperation can improve the productivity of individuals, and it is “creating a productivity”, also generate a magical effects about one plus one is greater than two.Everything we do today, no matter in business or life, depend upon our ability to get along with others.In our society, most tasks demand the cooperation of many individuals so that they can be accomplished effectively.In this situation, we must be supportive and cooperative.Each person is like a small part of a machine.If one part is out of order, the machine can’t be running well.In contrast, good cooperation is the ingredient of of his group players, Michael Jordan may not enjoy such great success in basketball, etc.Cooperation is becoming more and more important for a person to earn a good life.As mentioned above, competition promotes the social development, so does cooperation.Imagine if everyone gets blinders on to the world, what would the society be like?

In my mind, competition and cooperation should coexist, for they two are complementary.Competition leads to deterioration of interpersonal relationship and selfishness, however, cooperation helps people have a humble heart and eases personal conflicts.So competitors should more often seek cooperation—hostile cooperation.This may seem paradoxical, yet there is a good reason why competitors often cooperate with each other: the rewards are greater.For example, if everyone fights for a piece of the pie, then the fight may become so costly that the pie will be nearly gone when it comes time to divide it.It's much better to forget the fight and come to an agreement from the very beginning.What’s more, we cooperate with others to be more competitive;we compete to earn a better environment for

cooperation.Thus we can make progress continuously.Only competition together with cooperation leads us to realize our goals and satisfy our needs.Let us take WTO as an example.In order to enhance comprehensive national power, many countries join the WTO.On one hand, the fierce competition urges them to cooperate with their competitors;on the other hand, cooperation helps them learn from each other and improve their own competitiveness.They may confront with many difficulties, but opportunities always come along with challenges.In ancient times, the alliance between Liu Bei and Sun Quan is also a good reference.Both Liu Bei and Sun Quan are respected leaders in their territories.Strong they are, but not yet complete with Cao Cao’s seemingly unstoppable forces.Taking Zhuge Liang’s advice, Liu decides to form an alliance with Sun, which is of great wisdom and helps establish the balance of power for the existence of all three kingdoms.No doubt we often find there is an inseparable relationship between competition and cooperation.It is difficult to absolutely separate the two things, and in most cases the competition includes cooperation, cooperation does the same to competition.All in all, cooperation and competition are both important for us to live in the community.
