A True Friend

As an English proverb goes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” It means that a person who helps you when you are in trouble is your true friend.I myself do have such a friend.In 1995 I began to study in a boarding school and before long I got to know a friend, my classmate and roommate whom I nicknamed “Little Jap”, for he resembled a genuine Japanese—stocky and having a moustache on his upper lip.As he was always optimistic and easy to get along with, we soon became good friends and helped each other in our daily life and study.What impressed me most was his sincerity which was best shown in our final test.Before the impending test, I felt terribly tired and my head was swimming.Yet I had to burn the midnight oil.All my roommates were bent on books in candlelight until dawn.There was no sound in the dormitory except that shuffling the pages.All of a sudden, my friend sprang up from the bed and ran to fetch a pack of instant noodles.While he was preparing for it, he murmured, “Oh, how delicious!” It smelled good, really.I did not glance at it but others stared at it.Just a couple of days before I had quarreled with him about a trifle and I assumed that he was still very angry with me.As a result, I acted as if I saw nothing.In fact, my stomach was growling then.Perhaps the delicious noodles aroused my appetite.Hunger told me that a long time had passed since I was immersed in my book.When noodles were ready, to my great surprise, he served me the first.Puzzled, I did not know what to say.“I?m not hungry,” the words sounded insincere.“Take it quickly, or others will ?rob? it,” my friend said in a soft tone and then he went away.I was so touched that words were stuck in my throat.I simply could not take the noodles.To me, that bowl of noodles is invaluable, so is our friendship.In the end, I pledged that we will be true friends forever—past, present and future.Cen Tianyou
