“人生的意義是什么，答案眾說紛紜。有人說要看他留下了什么；有人認為要看他的信仰；有人說要用愛來評判；還有人說人生根本就毫無意義。我？我覺得可以從那些以你為鏡的人身上看到你自己人生的意義。我能肯定的是，不管按什么標準，愛德華·科爾在人世間的最后時光，比大部分人畢生的光陰更為充實。我知道，他在離世的時候合上了雙眼卻敞開了心靈?！边@是影片開始時卡特（主人公之一，也是作者自己）所講。人生的意義是什么?？ㄌ貨]有給出答案，只留下這一個問題讓觀眾自己從影片中去尋找。

其實不僅僅是從影片中去尋找，更是要你從自己的現(xiàn)實生活，以往的生活和將來的生活里去尋找。遺愿清單，每個人都有一份。人活著常常夾雜著許多遺愿，人活著也有許多的事情需要去做，但如果生命進行到了最后的關頭，你還有什么遺愿，還有什么事情需要迫切的去做？是否需要一個清單呢？如果給清單上的每一個遺愿加上一個他出現(xiàn)的日期，我這會是怎么樣的一種滋味。

生命將盡，遺愿涌現(xiàn)，無力完成，有時候更是沒有勇氣或是失去了理想而選擇了放棄完成這份清單，智者就會思考活過了一生究竟是為了什么，活著說是人生的意義是什么，愚者就會感嘆人世滄桑，如漫天繁花轉瞬即逝，兩者終究只得含恨。有一個調(diào)查，說的是人們是否愿意提前知道自己的大限，有95%的人選擇了不。不僅僅是缺少勇氣，而是給自己一個更自由的天地去放縱。但也容易因此悔恨。我十分佩服那些選擇了是的人。

但即使是影片中的兩個主人公，一個是黑人機械公（卡特），博學，一直夢想當歷史教授，一個是億萬富翁（愛德華），也不是這5%的人，當獲得死亡預告時，他們都選擇了抗爭。雖然他們知道這是一個從反抗到迷茫再到絕望最后到坦然的過程，但剛聽到自己的死亡預告時，他們兩人都是震驚和失望。畢竟誰也無法突如其來的面對死亡。這個時候他們自然而然的都會思考他們這一生的意義是什么。愛德華落寞的躺在床上看這棒球比賽?？ㄌ貏t寫下了自己這一生的遺愿。人生，就是由一個遺憾、再一個遺憾累加組合而成的，當你最終即將面對死亡的時候，就會發(fā)現(xiàn)這一生中有太多值得嘗試的事情，卻被你無情地錯過了，有太多的機緣，含恨默默在眼前消逝，有太多的人事，想親近想懷念求不再了。在卡特的清單中，有這樣一些遺愿“幫助一個陌生人”、“大笑到流淚”、“欣賞最壯麗的風景”等。在寫這份清單時，卡特是黯然的，他不愿愛德華看到，在寫完后就扔進了垃圾桶?；蛟S是因為害怕別人發(fā)現(xiàn)自己一生的價值意義是否有意義。至少他已經(jīng)在某種程度上否定了自己一生的價值，關心他的妻子，他的事業(yè)，他的子女，他產(chǎn)生了疑問。而愛德華，更是完全的否定自己，否定他的無比成功的事業(yè)和那億萬的財產(chǎn)。這就是人生，而人生的意義是什么，作者在這里打上了一個大大的問號，也讓觀眾陷入沉思。

到了這時候，億萬富翁和汽車修理工還有什么區(qū)別呢？一樣的落寞懊喪。似乎人生根本就沒有意義了。

隨后，作者給出了自己的答案。就是完成自己的“遺愿”。當愛德華拿起簍紙里的清單，他的眼中閃過一絲光芒，這是他這一刻不曾想到的。于是他又加上了這些遺愿“親吻世界上最美麗的女孩”、“紋身”、“跳傘”、“去埃及看金字塔”、“獵獅”。于是，在卡特和她妻子一頓爭吵后他們懷著共同的愿望，穿梭在世界各地——極低冰原、印度、開羅、北京、香港、西藏??雖然兩人是懷著不同心理，愛德華對待這個‘清單’，是以一種喧鬧的實踐方式，反之，卡特實現(xiàn)愿望則更加依靠靈魂的方向，就像在見證一些莊嚴而宏偉的事情，更像是完全出于好心去幫助一個陌生人。而愛德華卻是在尋找一種刺激，就好像從一架飛行的飛機中跳出來，或去親吻這個世界最美的女孩。但最后的結果就是他們都找到了自己想要的人生的意義，這可以從愛德華最后的悼詞中看出。人生的意義在于不留遺憾，在于做一些自己想組的事情。

這里作者似乎是在說我們應該好好珍惜機會好好對待自己。但是我們再做出選擇的時候沒有真真的好好對待自己嗎？愛德華選擇從商，他從來沒有失敗過;卡特雖然為了家庭而放棄了自己的理想——成為歷史教授，但至少那時他選擇了自己覺得應該真確的抉擇，如果他當時選擇繼續(xù)攻讀歷史，那么他現(xiàn)在或許會有另一番的遺憾。世事無常，總有遺憾。好好珍惜現(xiàn)在這么簡單的一個道理怎么會愚倒一片眾生呢？作者要說的并不在此。事物在發(fā)展，但是是變化的發(fā)展，沒人清楚它最后會發(fā)展成什么，就像自然不曾想過會創(chuàng)造人類，只有到了完成階段，才會知道到底遺憾什么，幸福什么。如此一來，珍惜現(xiàn)在是重要，但更為重要的是要有勇氣去除自己的遺憾（很多人到死時才有覺悟去完成遺愿），就是在自己死前那短暫卻又實在的時間里完成自己的遺憾。畢竟你無法預料將來，無法世事隨意，無法避免遺憾。作者所要說的就是盡力完成。關于影片結構，有這樣的評論：影片給人的感覺既好像是一部加長版的電影預告片，而且結尾處有著明顯的缺陷?！督袢彰绹凤@然這種說法是十分對的，但也有片面性。高度的思想內(nèi)涵已經(jīng)超越了電影本身結構所能給觀眾帶來的心靈上的巨大感受。
