如果把參加英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)言考試的時(shí)間計(jì)算在內(nèi)，多數(shù)人聯(lián)系自費(fèi)出國(guó)留學(xué)需要兩年時(shí)間，至少也需要一年半的時(shí)間。假定你現(xiàn)在已達(dá)到大學(xué)四級(jí)的英語(yǔ)水平，你TOEFL學(xué)習(xí)需要2—4個(gè)月時(shí)間，GRE學(xué)習(xí)需要4—6個(gè)月時(shí)間。TOEFL成績(jī)有效期為2年，GRE成績(jī)有效期為5年。TOEFL考試和GRE考試二者沒(méi)有哪一個(gè)必須先考的問(wèn)題。但因?yàn)門OEFL比GRE相對(duì)要容易，所以可以先考TOEFL，以便按部就班地學(xué)習(xí)。著急出國(guó)的人也可以同時(shí)準(zhǔn)備，在大約同一時(shí)間內(nèi)參加考試。

3月—7月：在準(zhǔn)備、參加考試的同時(shí)確定自己希望到美國(guó)去攻讀的專業(yè)，調(diào)查該專業(yè)在美國(guó)各大學(xué)的排名和其他情況。通過(guò)Peterson's Guide等資料查詢各大學(xué)專業(yè)招生情況、要求及地址。有條件的，也可以進(jìn)入各大學(xué)在Internet的網(wǎng)點(diǎn)查詢。在8月份以前必須選出30—40所學(xué)校作為自己的聯(lián)系對(duì)象。在此期間，還應(yīng)該盡可能回原畢業(yè)的學(xué)校開出中英文的正式成績(jī)單。

8月1日—8月30日：寫好第一封聯(lián)系信，通過(guò)郵局或E-mail發(fā)給你感興趣的學(xué)校，索取申請(qǐng)表及相關(guān)資料?，F(xiàn)在越來(lái)越多的學(xué)校在它們的萬(wàn)維網(wǎng)站上提供申請(qǐng)表格和其他申請(qǐng)資料，你可以從那里下載。9月—10月：收到校方的回信和申請(qǐng)資料，著手準(zhǔn)備各種各樣的文件。首先要對(duì)申請(qǐng)表格進(jìn)行篩選，排除一些不合適或?qū)δ悴槐硎練g迎的學(xué)校，最后選定10—15所學(xué)校作為認(rèn)真聯(lián)系的對(duì)象。然后按這些學(xué)校各自的要求準(zhǔn)備文件，通常這些文件包括經(jīng)校方簽章并簽封的中英文成績(jī)單，TOEFL、GRE等語(yǔ)言考試成績(jī)單的復(fù)印件，你自己寫的personal statement，resume，essays，你的推薦人寫的recommendation letters，等等。

11月1日—11月30日：認(rèn)真填寫所選出的10—15所大學(xué)的表格，為這些大學(xué)擬全部文件和材料，在這過(guò)程中，最好為每個(gè)大學(xué)建立一個(gè)檔案，保留和該校相關(guān)的文件和文件備份，以便隨時(shí)掌握聯(lián)系的進(jìn)度。準(zhǔn)備一個(gè)大信封，把全部要寄出的資料按順序放入。這些資料包括：

a.Cover Letter，向校方說(shuō)明全部資料已準(zhǔn)備齊全，現(xiàn)在一起寄出，希望校方認(rèn)真考慮并給予回音。b.申請(qǐng)費(fèi)，可到中國(guó)銀行或中信實(shí)業(yè)銀行辦理匯票，然后把該匯票附在你的申請(qǐng)表上。

c.申請(qǐng)表，按照各大學(xué)的要求填寫，有條件的可用電動(dòng)打字機(jī)打上去，如果用筆填寫，一定要一筆一劃寫得很清楚。

d.Personal Statement & Resume，這兩個(gè)文件事關(guān)你的獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金，一定要把你的優(yōu)勢(shì)和成就寫得充分可信。

e.論文或作品集。

f.TOEFL、GRE成績(jī)單，復(fù)印后簽上字，放入包封（package）中。

g.如果有一篇專業(yè)論文附在檔案中，一定會(huì)增加錄取或拿獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金的機(jī)會(huì)。學(xué)建筑等專業(yè)的學(xué)員則應(yīng)提交作品集。

h.財(cái)力證明，不管有沒(méi)有錢，都要把該表填好放入申請(qǐng)package中。

i.各學(xué)校所要求的其他資料和文件，這些文件都是要由你自己準(zhǔn)備并寄出的。

下列文件不能出現(xiàn)在前段提到的大信封里，必須單獨(dú)寄發(fā)：

a.Three Recommendation Letters，把三封推薦信分三個(gè)信封裝好，并在信封口上請(qǐng)教授簽上字。b.中、英文對(duì)照的成績(jī)單，用學(xué)校的信封封好，封口上應(yīng)有學(xué)校的簽章。

c.TOEFL、GRE的正式成績(jī)單，必須安排國(guó)外的考試中心直接寄給學(xué)校。

（次年）12月—1月：向各大學(xué)寄出所有聯(lián)系資料，并要求ETS向各大學(xué)寄TOEFL、GRE成績(jī)單原件。在以上工作全部結(jié)束以后，可再選出10所左右一般的大學(xué)，在不交申請(qǐng)費(fèi)，不寄TOEFL、GRE成績(jī)單原件的前提下進(jìn)行聯(lián)系，有時(shí)會(huì)有意想不到結(jié)果。

2月—4月：用通信或E-mail的方式和學(xué)校保持聯(lián)系?？赡艿脑挘虼髮W(xué)所學(xué)專業(yè)的教授寫信做自我推薦，讓那些能決定你命運(yùn)的教授了解你，以進(jìn)一步提高你被錄取和授予獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金機(jī)會(huì)。有時(shí)校方會(huì)來(lái)函，告知缺什么文件，接到信后應(yīng)趕緊把所需文件寄過(guò)去。在接到一所學(xué)校來(lái)的獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金后，不要急于答復(fù)，因?yàn)榭赡軙?huì)有更多更好的學(xué)校給予獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金。到4月上、中旬再?zèng)Q定去哪一所學(xué)校，然后再把別的學(xué)校回絕掉。5月—6月：如果到5月份還沒(méi)有接到獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金，不用著急，但要與學(xué)校繼續(xù)保持聯(lián)系。大約有三分之一的獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金是在5月和6月發(fā)下來(lái)的。拿到I-20表的學(xué)員，可以開始到公安機(jī)關(guān)辦理護(hù)照。護(hù)照拿到后，隨時(shí)可去美國(guó)大使館申請(qǐng)簽證。中國(guó)學(xué)生一般有三次連續(xù)簽證的機(jī)會(huì)，每次簽證費(fèi)405元人民幣。獲全獎(jiǎng)的學(xué)生多能一次通過(guò)。半獎(jiǎng)或沒(méi)獎(jiǎng)的學(xué)生只要準(zhǔn)備充分，也有相當(dāng)?shù)臋C(jī)會(huì)。

7月—8月：處理好國(guó)內(nèi)的各種事務(wù)，預(yù)定好飛機(jī)票，作身體健康免疫檢查，辦理好各種所需要的公證文件，購(gòu)置各種所需物品，和美國(guó)大學(xué)聯(lián)系住宿問(wèn)題，做好出國(guó)準(zhǔn)備。
