      In Hemingway's novella The Old Man and the Sea, Santiago is portrayed as a Christ figure.Through Santiago's Christ-like virtues, appearance, and journey, he is shown as the hero of the book.One of Santiago's virtues is his refusal to give up or to accept defeat.“Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated”(10).Despite his age and his inability to catch fish for months, Santiago still doesn't give up;much like Christ didn't give up when he was tortured before his crucifixion.Another Christ-like virtue of Santiago is his love and compassion for everything around him.The old man had love even for the fish he was trying to catch, after it was dead he thought “You did not kill the fish only to keep alive and to sell for food, he though.You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman.You loved him when he was alive and you loved him after.”(105).This love is similar to the love of Christ who taught that you should love everyone else as you love yourself and to love your enemies.Santiago's love for the fish even after its death also symbolizes Christ's love for people after their death and his promise of eternal life after death.In addition to his virtues, Santiago is Christ-like through his appearance.When “he felt the line carefully with his right hand and noticed his hand was bleeding,” it was a similar injury to when Christ's hands were punctured by the nails on the cross.After Santiago returns to shore and gets back to his shack, “he lay down on the bed.He pulled the blanket over his shoulders and then over his back and legs and he slept face down on the newspapers with his arms out straight and he palms of his hands up”(122).His position is the position Christ was in when he was crucified on the cross.When he gets back to land after catching the fish he must carry the mast from his boat in a way similar to how Christ carried his cross.“He started to climb again and at the top he fell and lay for some time with the mast across his shoulder.He tried to get up.But it was too difficult and he sat there with the mast on his shoulder and looked at the road”(121).Santiago carried his mast along the road as Christ carried his cross, and both became tired along the path and fell to rest.His journey is also similar to Christ's because of his reason for working to achieve it.He thinks “Now is the time to think of only one thing.That which I was born for”(40).Santiago feels he was born with the purpose of catching this fish, as Christ was born to be crucified and forgive the world.Their journeys are also similar because of their need to impress others.Santiago says “I must have the confidence and I must be worthy of the great DiMaggio who does all things perfectly”(68).DiMaggio is for Santiago similar to what God was for Christ, they both wanted to attempt to live up to them.Santiago's view of DiMaggio as being perfect is similar to God's perfection as well.Santiago's journey is also Christ-like because its significance is not realized by others until it is over.Santiago is made fun of by the other fishermen because it has been so long since he has caught anything, but they respect him once he has caught the fish even though it is only a skeleton when he gets it to sore.This is similar to Christ as he was mocked, even on the cross, but once he is dead many more people understand what he did and the importance of his life and death.Hemingway shows Santiago's similarity to Christ in his virtues, his appearance, and his journey.Through his similarities Santiago is portrayed as being more important than is first seen and he is shown as a hero.

      《老人與?!愤@部著名小說,我以前從未看過,只是在一些雜志上看到過有關(guān)評(píng)述它的文章。從那時(shí)起,我了解到它的故事梗概,主要是描寫一個(gè)老頭捕到大魚的故事。這次放暑假也算是為了完成老師交付的作業(yè)任務(wù)——讀一本名著。于是我又專門從書店千辛萬(wàn)苦尋來。捧著這本藍(lán)白相間的書皮的小說,感覺它似乎在眾書之中更顯出類拔萃。我的心里陡然升起了一種崇敬與熱愛,更有一種貼心的沉默和孤獨(dú)。我感覺我與它的距離忽地近了——期末考試失敗了,我的暑期生活便唯有如這書皮一樣的深藍(lán)與沉靜!

      這種深藍(lán),對(duì)于我,對(duì)于每個(gè)同齡人來說都應(yīng)該是不陌生的吧。這藍(lán)色,似乎有分別的眼淚,有前進(jìn)的荊棘坎坷,有殘忍的紅燈,有如頭腦一樣沉重的心情,脆弱得難以扛起尋夢(mèng)之翅的雙肩,將處世圓滑與世故奉承為圭臬的“成熟”抑或是“經(jīng)驗(yàn)”??有誰(shuí)能抵擋住燈紅酒綠的藍(lán)色深淵?這種色彩,似乎早已成了人世生活的主色調(diào),但眼前的《老人與?!芬饬x更深。老人能捉到大魚,又被鯊魚無(wú)情的呑噬,這些是不是都埋于這藍(lán)色中呢?讀海明威,讀桑提亞哥,渴望找到一些提示。

      晚上,倚著臺(tái)燈微弱的光,我一邊痛咀著自己的孤獨(dú)與沉默,開始讀這《老人與?!?。

      其實(shí)《老人與海》并非一部情節(jié)起伏跌宕,離奇怪誕,什么巧合都有的書,它是一篇看似質(zhì)樸卻寓意深?yuàn)W的人生哲學(xué)。一個(gè)“獨(dú)自漂流于波濤中的一條破爛不堪的漁船上的垂釣以求生存的孤苦老人”桑提亞哥的故事。老人已四十八天沒釣到一條魚了,生活所迫,他決定到遠(yuǎn)處的海域去捕魚。在那里他釣到了一條比他的船還宏大的馬林魚。經(jīng)過三天的較量,老人終于殺死了它。老人將它綁在船邊。可是難逃命運(yùn)的捉弄——一群鯊魚讓馬林魚只剩下了骨架。老人默然的目光望著深藍(lán)的大海,充滿悲苦的疑問。

      眨著有些疲倦的眼睛,我感到沉痛,又由此感到欣慰。我就這樣“痛并快樂著”——我似乎讀到了這位堅(jiān)強(qiáng)的老人的魄力——“他決定到遠(yuǎn)處的海域去捕魚?!彼{(lán)色的大海隨著眼睛的深邃更顯藍(lán)且深?;蛟S在這里更有藍(lán)色的深味,我品味著。

      我于是重讀書中的文字,深味其中的堅(jiān)強(qiáng),尋求人生的點(diǎn)點(diǎn)哲思。

      一個(gè)無(wú)論怎樣遲鈍的人,至少都能理解自信對(duì)于人生和事業(yè)的重要性。自信方能成功!我仔細(xì)思考著,忽然覺得可悲的是,我身邊有太多的人都在用信心打造人生的過程中被幾個(gè)絆腳石絆倒,便再也沒有爬起來。蝸居在這個(gè)鄙陋的似乎專屬于失敗者的角落,我感到,沉默之后便是死亡!于是,老人,似乎成了我人生的榜樣。

      “他注視著鯊魚在逼近,抽空朝那條大魚望了一眼。這簡(jiǎn)直等于是一場(chǎng)夢(mèng),他想。我沒法阻擊它來襲擊我,但是我也許能弄死它。”——我似乎讀到了老人的頑強(qiáng),堅(jiān)定與執(zhí)著。是的,其實(shí)在絕望的時(shí)候,從生活中提取綠色的希望是一個(gè)人成功的關(guān)鍵。老人便是如此,他背負(fù)得起苦難,包容得了榮辱,他因此不敗。

      當(dāng)今社會(huì),萬(wàn)象紛亂,短暫的曾經(jīng),太多的挫折與桎梏已經(jīng)過早地磨平了我們的個(gè)性和銳氣,以致于我們?cè)谌诵蕴赜械娜觞c(diǎn)里拘囿于規(guī)則而茍安于現(xiàn)狀,或是如西洋的驢子一樣,被趕驢人蒙了雙眼高一腳低一腳走在現(xiàn)成的路上,也許不是每個(gè)人都甘心如此過活。有人會(huì)呼喚勇氣的復(fù)蘇,如桑提亞哥。他們堅(jiān)信,一切不是只存在于小說或虛幻中。

      “我并不懂,老人想。每一回他都覺得自己快要跨了。我弄不懂。但我還要試一下?!薄€是讓人震驚的堅(jiān)強(qiáng)毅力——堅(jiān)持意味著勝利!

      毅力的價(jià)值,在于它創(chuàng)造了人生中的那些因堅(jiān)持而獲得的快樂與勝利的奇跡。軟木塞是不會(huì)輕易移動(dòng)的。同理,毅力是不會(huì)輕易屈服于困難與挫折的。人只要有了毅力,美好的未來就并不遙遠(yuǎn),努力不會(huì)再付之東流。

      忽然一個(gè)成語(yǔ)躍入了我的心里:曲徑通幽。是的,人生路上的“曲”太多了,但我們更需要看到,“曲”的盡頭不是悲苦與荒涼,而是“幽”——這是我們最終的目標(biāo)。不要因路邊野花的艷麗和荊棘的阻攔而迷失方向,失去了動(dòng)力。我們?yōu)槭裁床蛔鲞@深藍(lán)大海上的桑提亞哥呢?一次次在凝重的深藍(lán)中跌倒,又一次次爬起,讓我們走進(jìn)桑提亞哥,學(xué)習(xí)桑提亞哥吧??

      回到《老人與海》,它只不過是一曲英雄主義的贊歌。主人公桑提亞哥不像《太陽(yáng)照常升起》中的杰克·巴恩斯,也不像《永別了,武器》中的弗雷德里克·享利,他們?cè)诙蜻\(yùn)面前,至多表現(xiàn)得能“勇敢而有風(fēng)度地忍受”;老人盡管開始就處于不利地位,但仍是一種知其不可為而為之的精神,難道不是有利于我們,并值得我們學(xué)習(xí)的嗎?畢竟,生活中充滿酸甜苦辣,坎坷險(xiǎn)阻,痛苦的昨天我們不能完全忘記,應(yīng)作為美好明天的展望臺(tái),展望未來!

      或許可以這么說:“精神上的勝利遠(yuǎn)大于物質(zhì)的獲得?!鄙L醽喐缇褪侨绱?,盡管馬林魚被鯊魚所咬,但他能夠說:“人并不是生來就要被打敗的,你可以消滅他,可就是不能打敗他。”何其偉大,又何其崇高!

      這使我聯(lián)想到我們?nèi)粘5膶W(xué)習(xí)生活。難免會(huì)有很多不順的困境與苦惱,會(huì)挫傷我們剛開始的熱情和銳氣,那么持之以恒吧——一帆風(fēng)順的只是故事,豐富多彩的才叫生活!

      在生活中遇到坎坷和荊棘時(shí),我們不妨對(duì)自己說:“事事我曾努力,成敗何須怨我!”一次的失敗并不等于一生的失敗,有哲人說:“只要太陽(yáng)還從東方升起,就永遠(yuǎn)不要放棄希望。”為百分之一的希望而作百分之百的努力,這是一個(gè)令人自豪的奮斗過程。
