Well, traditional definition is “an organism to which exogenous components have been added for the purpose of adapting to new environments.” That came from a 1960 paper on space travel, because, if you think about it, space is pretty awkward.People aren't supposed to be there.But humans are curious, and they like to add things to their bodies so they can go to the Alps one day and then become a fish in the sea the next.0:49So let's look at the concept of traditional anthropology.Somebody goes to another country, says, “How fascinating these people are, how interesting their tools are, how curious their culture is.” And then they write a paper, and maybe a few other anthropologists read it, and we think it's very exotic.Well, what's happening is that we've suddenly found a new species.I, as a cyborg anthropologist, have suddenly said, “Oh, wow.Now suddenly we're a new form of Homo sapiens, and look at these fascinating cultures, and look at these curious rituals that everybody's doing around this technology.They're clicking on things and staring at screens.” 1:24Now there's a reason why I study this, versus traditional anthropology.And the reason is that tool use,in the beginning--for thousands and thousands of years, everything has been a physical modification of self.It has helped us to extend our physical selves, go faster, hit things harder, and there's been a limit on that.But now what we're looking at is not an extension of the physical self, but an extension of the mental self, and because of that, we're able to travel faster, communicate differently.And the other thing that happens is that we're all carrying around little Mary Poppins technology.We can put anything we want into it, and it doesn't get heavier, and then we can take anything out.What does the inside of your computer actually look like? Well, if you print it out, it looks like a thousand pounds of material that you're carrying around all the time.And if you actually lose that information, it means that you suddenly have this loss in your mind, that you suddenly feel like something's missing, except you aren't able to see it, so it feels like a very strange emotion.2:20The other thing that happens is that you have a second self.Whether you like it or not, you're starting to show up online, and people are interacting with your second self when you're not there.And so you have to be careful about leaving your front lawn open, which is basically your Facebook wall, so that people don't write on it in the middle of the night--because it's very much the equivalent.And suddenly we have to start to maintain our second self.You have to present yourself in digital life in a similar way that you would in your analog life.So, in the same way that you wake up, take a shower and get dressed, you have to learn to do that for your digital self.And the problem is that a lot of people now,especially adolescents, have to go through two adolescences.They have to go through their primary one, that's already awkward, and then they go through their second self's adolescence, and that's even more awkward because there's an actual history of what they've gone through online.And anybody coming in new to technology is an adolescent online right now, and so it's very awkward, and it's very difficult for them to do those things.3:19So when I was little, my dad would sit me down at night and he would say, “I'm going to teach you about time and space in the future.” And I said, “Great.” And he said one day, “What's the shortest distance between two points?” And I said, “Well, that's a straight line.You told me that yesterday.” I thought I was very clever.He said, “No, no, no.Here's a better way.” He took a piece of paper, drew A and B on one side and the other and folded them together so where A and B touched.And he said, “That is the shortest distance between two points.” And I said, “Dad, dad, dad, how do you do that?” He said, “Well, you just bend time and space, it takes an awful lot of energy, and that's just how you do it.”And I said, “I want to do that.” And he said, “Well, okay.” And so, when I went to sleep for the next 10 or 20 years, I was thinking at night, “I want to be the first person to create a wormhole, to make things accelerate faster.And I want to make a time machine.” I was always sending messages to my future self using tape recorders.4:15But then what I realized when I went to college is that technology doesn't just get adopted because it works.It gets adopted because people use it and it's made for humans.So I started studying anthropology.And when I was writing my thesis on cell phones, I realized that everyone was carrying around wormholes in their pockets.They weren't physically transporting themselves;they were mentally transporting themselves.They would click on a button, and they would be connected as A to B immediately.And I thought, “Oh, wow.I found it.This is great.” 4:43So over time, time and space have compressed because of this.You can stand on one side of the world, whisper something and be heard on the other.One of the other ideas that comes around is that you have a different type of time on every single device that you use.Every single browser tab gives you a different type of time.And because of that, you start to dig around for your external memories--where did you leave them? So now we're all these paleontologists that are digging for things that we've lost on our external brains that we're carrying around in our pockets.And that incites a sort of panic architecture--“Oh no, where's this thing?” We're all “I Love Lucy” on a great assembly line of information, and we can't keep up.5:20And so what happens is, when we bring all that into the social space, we end up checking our phones all the time.So we have this thing called ambient intimacy.It's not that we're always connected to everybody, but at anytime we can connect to anyone we want.And if you were able to print out everybody in your cell phone, the room would be very crowded.These are the people that you have access to right now, in general--all of these people, all of your friends and family that you can connect to.5:43And so there are some psychological effects that happen with this.One I'm really worried about is that people aren't taking time for mental reflection anymore, and that they aren't slowing down and stopping, being around all those people in the room all the time that are trying to compete for their attention on the simultaneous time interfaces, paleontology and panic architecture.They're not just sitting there.And really, when you have no external input, that is a time when there is a creation of self,when you can do long-term planning, when you can try and figure out who you really are.And then, once you do that, you can figure out how to present your second self in a legitimate way, instead of just dealing with everything as it comes in--and oh, I have to do this, and I have to do this, and I have to do this.And so this is very important.I'm really worried that, especially kids today, they're not going to be dealing with this down-time, that they have an instantaneous button-clicking culture, and that everything comes to them, and that they become very excited about it and very addicted to it.6:36So if you think about it, the world hasn't stopped either.It has its own external prosthetic devices, and these devices are helping us all to communicate and interact with each other.But when you actually visualize it, all the connections that we're doing right now--this is an image of the mapping of the Internet--it doesn't look technological.It actually looks very organic.This is the first time in the entire history of humanity that we've connected in this way.And it's not that machines are taking over.It's that they're helping us to be more human, helping us to connect with each other.7:09The most successful technology gets out of the way and helps us live our lives.And really, it ends up being more human than technology, because we're co-creating each other all the time.And so this is the important point that I like to study: that things are beautiful, that it's still a human connection--it's just done in a different way.We're just increasing our humanness and our ability to connect with each other, regardless of geography.So that's why I study cyborg anthropology.7:36Thank you.7:38(Applause)

President Obama and I spoke positively of the progress made in the China-U.S.relationship since the new American administration took office.We both agreed to continue to adopt a strategic and long-term perspective, increase the dialogue exchanges and cooperation, and work together to build a positive, cooperative, and comprehensive China-U.S.relationship for the 21st century.We also agreed to take concrete actions to steadily grow a partnership between the two countries to meet our common challenges in order to contribute to world peace, stability, and prosperity.我們都認為，保持兩國高層的密切交往，和其他各個級別的對話蹉商，對中美關系的發(fā)展至關重要，雙方同意兩國領導人繼續(xù)通過互訪、通話、通信，或在多邊場合會晤等方式，保持密切溝通。

We both believe and maintain close high-level exchanges and dialogue and consultations at various other levels are essential to the growth of China relations.The two sides agreed that the leaders of the two countries will continue to stay in close touch through mutual visits, telephone conversations, correspondence, and meetings of multilateral fora.The two sides spoke positively of the important role of the China-U.S.strategic and economic dialogues mechanism in enhancing the mutual trust and cooperation between the two countries.The two sides will continue to follow through on the outcomes of the first round of the China-U.S.strategic and economic dialogues held in July this year.And we will start as early as possible to make preparations for the second round to be held in summer next year in Beijing.我們就當前的國際經(jīng)濟、金融形勢交換了看法，認為當前的世界經(jīng)濟出現(xiàn)了企穩(wěn)回升的積極跡象，但復蘇的基礎并不牢固。雙方重申將繼續(xù)在宏觀經(jīng)濟政策領域加強對話和合作，堅持通過平等協(xié)商妥善處理兩國經(jīng)貿(mào)摩擦問題，共同維護雙邊經(jīng)貿(mào)關系健康穩(wěn)定發(fā)展。

We also exchanged views on the current international economic and financial situation, and we believed that now the world economy has shown some positive signs of stabilizing and recovery.But the foundation for this recovery is not firmly established.The two sides reiterated that they will continue to increase dialogue and cooperation in macroeconomic and financial policies, and they will continue to have consultations on an equal footing to properly resolve and address the economic and trade frictions in a joint effort to uphold the sound and steady growth of their business ties and trade.我向奧巴馬總統(tǒng)強調(diào)，當前形勢下，我們兩國應該有更加堅決的態(tài)度，反對和抵制各種形式的保護主義。

I stressed to President Obama that under the current circumstances, our two countries need to oppose and reject protectionism in all its manifestations in an even stronger stand.We both positively spoke of the important role of the G20 summit in tackling the international financial crisis.Our two countries will work with other members and comprehensively follow through on the outcomes of the various summits.We will also work together to continuously strengthen the role of G20 in global economic governance, advance the reform of international financial system, and improve the global economic governance to ward off and guard against future financial or economic crisis.我們同意擴大兩國在氣侯變化、能源、環(huán)境領域的合作，在共同但有區(qū)別的原則和各自能力的基礎上，同有關各方一道推動哥本哈根大會取得積極成果。中美兩國的有關部門已簽署中美關于加強氣候變化、能源和環(huán)境合作的諒解備忘備等合作文件，并且正式啟動了中美清潔能源聯(lián)合研究中心。

We agreed to expand our cooperation on climate change, energy, and environment.We also agreed to act on the basis of the principle of the common but differentiated responsibilities and consistent with our respective capabilities to work with other parties concerned to help produce positive outcomes out of the Copenhagen conference.The complementing departments of China and the United States have already signed a number of cooperation agreements, including the MOU to enhanced cooperation on climate change, energy and environment.The two sides have also officially launched the initiative of developing a China-U.S.clean energy research center.我和奧巴馬總統(tǒng)都表示，愿意在雙向互利的基礎上，深化兩國反恐、執(zhí)法、科技、航天、民用航空、高速鐵路基礎設施建設、農(nóng)業(yè)、衛(wèi)生等領域的合作，并繼續(xù)推動兩軍關系取得更大的進展。我們還就擴大兩國的人文交流，特別是青年交流進行了探討，支持雙方建立人文交流機制，并且加強互派留學生合作。

Both President Obama and I said that we are willing to act on the basis of mutual benefit and reciprocity to deepen our cooperation on counterterrorism, law enforcement, science, technology, outer space, civil aviation, and engage in cooperation in space exploration, high-speed railway infrastructure, in agriculture, health, and other fields.And we also agreed to work together to continue to promote even greater progress in the growth of military-to-military ties.We also discussed how to expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries, particularly the youth exchanges.And we are supportive of the establishment of a people-to-people and cultural exchange mechanism, and we agreed to strengthen our cooperation in exchanging students.我們都表示堅持通過對話協(xié)商，解決朝鮮半島核問題。符合包括中美兩國在內(nèi)的有關各方的共同利益，雙方將同有關各方一道，堅持半島無核化和六方會談進程，維護東北亞和平穩(wěn)定。我們強調(diào)維護國際核不擴散體系，通過對話談判，妥善解決伊朗核問題，對維護中東和海灣地區(qū)的穩(wěn)定十分重要。

Both of us said that we will remain committed to dialogue and consultations in resolving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.And such approach serves the common interests of China, the United States, and other parties concerned.The two sides will work with other parties concerned to continue the denuclearization process of the Korean Peninsula and six-party talks process in a bid to uphold the peace and stability in Northeast Asia.We both stressed that to uphold the international nuclear nonproliferation regime and to appropriately resolve the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiations is very important to stability in the Middle East and in the Gulf region.在會談中，我向奧巴馬總統(tǒng)強調(diào)，中美兩國國情不同，雙方存在一些分歧是正常的，關鍵是要尊重和照顧對方的核心利益和重大關切。

During the talks, I underlined to President Obama that given our differences in national conditions, it is only normal that our two sides may disagree on some issues.What is important is to respect and accommodate each other’s core interests and major concerns.President Obama on various occasions has reiterated that the U.S.side adheres to the one-China policy, abides by the three Sino-U.S.joint communiqués, and respects China’s sovereignty and the territorial integrity when it comes to the Taiwan question and other matters.The Chinese side appreciates his statements.雙方重申互相尊重主權和領導完整這一根本原則，雙方均不支持任何勢力破壞這一原則的任何活動。我們將繼續(xù)本著平等、相互尊重、互不干涉內(nèi)政的精神，就人權和宗教等問題開展對話交流，以增進了解，減少分歧，擴大共識。

Good afternoon.I want to start by thanking President Hu and the Chinese people for the warmth and hospitality that they have shown myself and our delegation since we arrived.We had a wonderful day in Shanghai yesterday, a wonderful discussion with China’s young men and women, and I’m looking forward to the conversations we’ll have and the sights that we’ll see here in Beijing over the next two days.下午好。首先我要感謝胡主席和中國人民從我們到來后給予我和代表團的熱情款待。昨天，我們在上海度過了非常愉快的一天，同中國男女青年進行了一次十分愉快的討論。我期待著我們今明兩天將在北京進行的會談和景點參觀。

President Hu and I also made progress on the issue of climate change.As the two largest consumers and producers of energy, there can be no solution to this challenge without the efforts of both China and the United States.That’s why we’ve agreed to a series of important new initiatives in this area.As President Hu indicated, we are creating a joint clean energy research center, and have achieved agreements on energy efficiency, renewable energy, cleaner uses of coal, electric vehicles, and shale gas.胡主席和我在氣候變化問題上也取得了進展。作為能源的最大消費國和生產(chǎn)國，沒有中美兩國的共同努力就無法成功地應對這一挑戰(zhàn)。因此我們同意在這一領域采取一系列新的重要行動。胡主席已說明，我們將設立一個清潔能源聯(lián)合研究中心，我們還就能效、可再生能源、清潔使用煤炭、電動車輛和頁巖氣等問題達成一致。

On the issue of nonproliferation, President Hu and I discussed our shared commitment to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, and I told him how appreciative I am of China’s support for the global nonproliferation regime as well as the verifiable elimination of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.在防擴散問題上，胡主席和我討論了制止核武器擴散的共同承諾，我向胡主席表示了我對中國支持全球防擴散制度和可驗證地消除北韓核武器項目的極大贊賞。

We agreed on the importance of resuming the six-party talks as soon as possible.As I said in Tokyo, North Korea has a choice: It can continue down the path of confrontation and provocation that has led to less security, less prosperity, and more isolation from the global community, or it can choose to become a full member of the international community, which will give a better life to its people by living up to international obligations and foregoing nuclear weapons.In the same way, we agreed that the Islamic Republic of Iran must provide assurances to the international community that its nuclear program is peaceful and transparent.On this point, our two nations and the rest of our P5-plus-1 partners are unified.Iran has an opportunity to present and demonstrate its peaceful intentions, but if it fails to take this opportunity there will be consequences.同樣地，我們也一致認為伊朗伊斯蘭共和國必須向國際社會提供保證，保證其核項目是和平而且透明的。在這一點上，我們兩國和五常加一的其他伙伴國意見一致。伊朗有此機會展示和表明其和平的目的，但如果它沒能利用這次機會，則將面臨后果。

Finally, as I did yesterday in Shanghai, I spoke to President Hu about America’s bedrock beliefs that all men and women possess certain fundamental human rights.We do not believe these principles are unique to America, but rather they are universal rights and that they should be available to all peoples, to all ethnic and religious minorities.And our two countries agreed to continue to move this discussion forward in a human rights dialogue that is scheduled for early next year.最后，如同我昨天在上海時一樣，我向胡錦濤主席談了美國的基本信念，即人人都有某些最基本的人權。我們不認為這些原則是美國特有的，它們是普遍的權利。各國人民，各個少數(shù)民族和宗教少數(shù)派都應該享有。我們兩國同意在定于明年年初舉行的人權對話中繼續(xù)推動這種討論。

We did note that while we recognize that Tibet is part of the People’s Republic of China, the United States supports the early resumption of dialogue between the Chinese government and representatives of the Dalai Lama to resolve any concerns and differences that the two sides may have.We also applauded the steps that the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan have already taken to relax tensions and build ties across the Taiwan Strait.Our own policy, based on the three U.S.-China communiqués and the Taiwan Relations Act, supports the further development of these ties--ties that are in the interest of both sides, as well as the broader region and the United States.基于美中三個聯(lián)合公報和《臺灣關系法》，我們自身的政策是支持繼續(xù)發(fā)展這些關系——這些關系有利于雙方，有利于更廣大的地區(qū)和美國。
