第一篇：口語達(dá)人雅思口語的錘煉三個步驟

當(dāng)雅思考試(IELTS, international language testing system, 國際英語語言測試)于1989年登陸中國大陸時,當(dāng)年全部考生57人。變化的速度遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)超過人們的想象。2008年全中國大陸考生人數(shù)為26萬人次。20年足夠發(fā)生很多事情。但至少有一件事情還沒有多少變化:中國學(xué)生的雅思口語分?jǐn)?shù)。

可以說這是一個多少讓中國人臉上掛不住的問題。2008年中國大陸雅思考生口語部分平均分

5.25分,榮幸地超越了卡塔爾考生的口語平均分(5.26分),登上了全球雅思口語平均分最低的寶座。全球的最高平均分被德國考生摘走,為7.24分。實(shí)際上,卡塔爾考生的分?jǐn)?shù)非常值得我們反思:其考生除了口語外的聽力、閱讀、寫作的分?jǐn)?shù)均低于5分,只有口語為5.26分。而中國學(xué)生的其他幾個分項(xiàng)的平均分為聽力5.50分,閱讀5.70分,寫作5.12分。有趣的現(xiàn)象是,口語、寫作明顯低于閱讀、聽力。

如果我們一定要用一個句子來形容英語口語之于中國學(xué)生的話,恐怕應(yīng)該是“胸口永遠(yuǎn)的痛”。一直以來,中國的英語教學(xué)中總是在摸索中前進(jìn),尋找一線希望來解決中國孩子的英語口語問題。似乎自中國學(xué)校的課堂引入英文課以來,口語總是我們心頭的一片陰霾。

在英語培訓(xùn)界中多年的教學(xué)經(jīng)驗(yàn)告訴我,英語口語的教學(xué)是一個復(fù)雜的、系統(tǒng)化的工程。它需要結(jié)合教師、學(xué)生、教材、詞匯、句法、語音、語調(diào)、心理訓(xùn)練等各方面因素。上個月我在悉尼大學(xué)的一個學(xué)生寫信告訴我,很感激我當(dāng)時課堂上講的英語學(xué)習(xí)方法。當(dāng)時理解不太多,但到了澳洲之后,發(fā)現(xiàn)這的確是與真實(shí)的學(xué)習(xí)、生活的語言需求結(jié)合在一起的。雅思口語的系統(tǒng)之龐大,與其在國外生活、學(xué)習(xí)所需的語言技能的實(shí)用性是密不可分的。在國外的課堂中,中國學(xué)生的口語方面比較弱,故而適應(yīng)起來往往比較緩慢、曲折而痛苦。究其原因,主要還是在國內(nèi)的學(xué)習(xí)中不得其法。

如果一定要剖析雅思口語學(xué)習(xí)的結(jié)構(gòu),筆者建議,其準(zhǔn)備應(yīng)當(dāng)分為三個階段:

語音語調(diào)的錘煉階段

如同小提琴手剛剛學(xué)琴時,拉空弦、拉音階都要拉上好幾個月一樣,基本功的練習(xí)是必不可少的。語音語調(diào)在雅思口語中的重要性,不僅僅體現(xiàn)在它名列四大評分標(biāo)準(zhǔn)之一,更重要的是,一旦因?yàn)檎Z音不清,語調(diào)不對而導(dǎo)致考官無法聽懂,則其他三項(xiàng)評分標(biāo)準(zhǔn)也就變?yōu)橐患埧照?。舉例來說,中國學(xué)生常見的發(fā)音問題中,常有th音不咬舌的狀況。比如,this這個單詞念出來后,感覺像zis。雖說漢語中并沒有咬舌的聲音,但雅思考官的訓(xùn)練中自然包含這方面的針對訓(xùn)練,會很注意學(xué)生在這方面的欠缺。

各位都在電視節(jié)目中看過各種各樣的外國人講中文,能把音發(fā)得特別純正的是很少的,感覺很像“大舌頭”。那些說不太準(zhǔn)的外國友人,雖然能讓我們理解其所說的中文,但往往讓人聽得很痛苦,很糾結(jié),總想幫助他把下半句說完。同樣的道理,當(dāng)我們帶有濃重的本土口音去到國外學(xué)習(xí)生活時,外國友人們也往往覺得,能聽懂,但溝通起來費(fèi)勁。實(shí)際上,在出國以后,中國學(xué)生在對話中往往不會語音差到對方完全不能理解,但總是帶有一些口音,讓人感覺到說話不舒服。

忽視這個問題的代價是很大的。心理學(xué)研究告訴我們,人與人之間的交流,有35%左右是通過純粹的語言內(nèi)容,而有超過65%是通過語音、語調(diào)、肢體語言來實(shí)現(xiàn)的。21世紀(jì)是強(qiáng)調(diào)交流的世紀(jì),信息代替金錢成為這個時代的主題。倘若通過語言留給對方的是“未接受良好教育”的印象,將大大制約其人的學(xué)業(yè)及事業(yè)乃至生活的發(fā)展。我想任何一位父母都不希望自己的孩子出國以后因?yàn)檎Z音語調(diào)的問題受到別人的歧視。

除參加專業(yè)的英語培訓(xùn)機(jī)構(gòu)的口語課程以外,建議學(xué)生尋找?guī)в性媾湟舻挠⒄Z教材來進(jìn)行模仿。如新概念就是很好的模仿對象。具體操作方法是:僅尋找一篇文章,在不斷聽讀的操作中,將每個句子的語音、語調(diào)、語速、斷句、重音、弱讀以及背后的情緒都全部模仿,并且自己錄音,自己監(jiān)聽,不斷修正。在條件允許時也建議尋找外教進(jìn)行糾正。不過大多數(shù)中國學(xué)生和家長都容易忽略的一個問題是,實(shí)際上模仿整句話遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)比模仿單個單詞重要的多。

詞匯、句型的輸入階段

很多在中國的外教都容易發(fā)現(xiàn)這樣一個問題:中國學(xué)生在口語交流中往往容易“無話可說”。這個現(xiàn)象的起因有很多,不過多數(shù)外教錯覺性認(rèn)為主要原因是中國學(xué)生太害羞。他們往往認(rèn)為,只要不斷鼓勵學(xué)生,讓學(xué)生突破心理障礙,開口說英語,則教師的任務(wù)就結(jié)束了。

不得不說,這是一個謬論。導(dǎo)致學(xué)生“無話可說”的因素中,的確包括害羞。但我們不能忽略的是,現(xiàn)在大多數(shù)的中學(xué)生、大學(xué)生是80年代后期到90年代初期出生的,接受的是相對比較開放式的教育。這樣的結(jié)果是,其實(shí)學(xué)生的害羞心理已經(jīng)沒有原先的那么重。

那么現(xiàn)階段“無話可說”的最主要原因是什么呢?按筆者多年的教學(xué)經(jīng)驗(yàn)來看,其實(shí)主要是缺乏足夠的表達(dá)所需的句型、單詞。也就是說,雖然我們鼓勵學(xué)生多說,但其實(shí)他們沒有足夠的“彈藥”,自然無法自由順暢地表達(dá)。

單純依賴外教的弊端由此而凸現(xiàn)出來。外教在為學(xué)生灌輸、講解句型和單詞的時候,往往效率很低。一方面因?yàn)檎Z言障礙,在面對基礎(chǔ)本來就不太好的學(xué)生時,講解一個單詞耗費(fèi)了大量的時間。比如一個中教只需要1分鐘就能講明白的單詞或句型,一個外教往往要花到3、5分鐘才能讓學(xué)生明白自己想說的是什么。故而,教學(xué)管理中,筆者往往在口語教學(xué)中平衡中教與外教的比例。讓善于講解的中教先講,再讓善于引導(dǎo)的外教后講,往往能夠起到事半功倍的效果。雅思口語考試涉及上百個不同的口語話題,所包含內(nèi)容之廣可以說是駭人聽聞的。所以筆者一直在課堂上強(qiáng)調(diào):You can't be too prepared!(你再多準(zhǔn)備都不算過分!)建議考生平時多聽英文電視連續(xù)劇、脫口秀節(jié)目、新聞節(jié)目和電影。網(wǎng)絡(luò)上的資源應(yīng)有盡有,家長也應(yīng)當(dāng)有意識引導(dǎo)孩子去尋找適合自己興趣的英文視頻材料來進(jìn)行課外學(xué)習(xí)和補(bǔ)充。另外,找到一本很好的口語教材對學(xué)習(xí)口語也很重要。從筆者的經(jīng)驗(yàn)看來,大量進(jìn)行單詞和句型的記憶,并且在最短時間內(nèi)進(jìn)行口頭練習(xí),不僅是學(xué)習(xí)口語最快的方式,也是記憶單詞、提高語感最佳的方式。舉例來說,學(xué)生首先在情緒表達(dá)場景中學(xué)會抱怨的句型:I can't believe this is happening to me!(我簡直不相信這會發(fā)生在我身上!),則應(yīng)當(dāng)馬上與語言伙伴進(jìn)行口頭練習(xí),體驗(yàn)如何在真實(shí)交流中使用該句式。

文化交際意識的養(yǎng)成語言學(xué)家早在上個世紀(jì)就已經(jīng)得出以下結(jié)論:語境意識的養(yǎng)成對語言能力的培養(yǎng)是具備主導(dǎo)性作用的。有人常常半開玩笑地說,學(xué)習(xí)英語最好的辦法就是把一個人直接扔到英國或者美國去。一個雅思口語準(zhǔn)備已經(jīng)完成前面兩個階段的學(xué)生,往往會發(fā)現(xiàn),自己發(fā)音和語調(diào)已經(jīng)過關(guān),逐漸開始接近英語母語人士的發(fā)音,而各個不同話題的單詞和句型積累也已經(jīng)到達(dá)一定程度,能相對比較容易地探討很多話題的內(nèi)容。但這一切都還處在紙上談兵的階段。將之前所學(xué)完全轉(zhuǎn)化為實(shí)戰(zhàn)經(jīng)驗(yàn),還有一個漫長的過程。很多雅思考生之前準(zhǔn)備得相當(dāng)充分,但真的看到金發(fā)碧眼的考官時,心里不禁打了個冷戰(zhàn),無法控制自己害怕的情緒,之前的所學(xué)就無法準(zhǔn)確地、全面地調(diào)動出來了。這就是外教大顯神通的時候了。作為英語母語人士,再配合社會交際教學(xué)法,外教往往懂得如何去調(diào)動學(xué)生的積極性,將之前所學(xué)一股腦都倒出來,落實(shí)為練習(xí),加強(qiáng)使用能力。

其間,學(xué)生也需要逐漸注意提高文化交際意識。當(dāng)我們懂得西方人的交際習(xí)慣時,其實(shí)就能夠掌握與之交談的方法。這在以后,不管是雅思口語考試、大學(xué)課堂討論還是世界名企的工作面試當(dāng)中,都是很重要的體現(xiàn)一個人素質(zhì)的指標(biāo)。舉例來說,中國學(xué)生往往喜歡照搬教科書中的how are you? I'm fine, thank you.And you? 的經(jīng)典俗套打招呼方式來與外國友人交談,然而事實(shí)是大多數(shù)外國朋友都并不這么說。他們傾向于說 Hello!或者 What's up?來表示打招呼。我的一個學(xué)生在倫敦政經(jīng)學(xué)院給我寫信說,她的一個同學(xué)每次在別人問她What's up?的時候,都非常認(rèn)真地回答她最近在做些什么事情,搞得對方非常的尷尬。實(shí)際上看似問你“最近怎樣”的問題就好比中國人之間互問“吃飯了么”那樣的稀松平常,并不是真的在問你最近干什么,只需要簡單地回答You know, as usual(你知道的,就老樣子)就可以了。

建議準(zhǔn)備好前面兩個階段的雅思考生平時盡量爭取與外教面對面練習(xí)的機(jī)會,也應(yīng)當(dāng)大量參

加英語的各類活動,如戲劇大賽,演講大賽、電影沙龍等等,最大限度地接觸英文環(huán)境,激發(fā)英語思維意識和文化交際意識,以西式思維滲透英語學(xué)習(xí),才能更快地提高口語實(shí)力。

從事英語培訓(xùn)多年,筆者不得不指出,現(xiàn)今國內(nèi)的雅思口語教學(xué)尚處于開發(fā)階段。課程特色分為兩個極端:一個為短訓(xùn)為主,大班,中教講解為主;另一個為長期打包課程,小班,外教講解為主。前一種課程中,口語教師往往只能起到一個提綱挈領(lǐng)的作用。因?yàn)槿颂?課太短,只能講個大概,大部分學(xué)習(xí)還是是由學(xué)生自己在家內(nèi)完成,自覺性比較差的學(xué)生往往就功敗垂成。后一種課程往往走精品包裝路線,包括豪華裝修、品種繁多的活動、配合大量的電腦上機(jī),對此筆者不做評論。綜述,理想的口語學(xué)習(xí)體系,還是應(yīng)該以中國學(xué)生自身的特色來進(jìn)行設(shè)計,不能一味地照搬西式的口語教學(xué)法。

沒有一個家長不希望自己的孩子說一口漂亮、自信的語言,不管是中文還是英文。因?yàn)檎Z言是一個人溝通信息并且獲得社會資源的最基本保障。筆者相信未來的幾年,中國的英語口語教學(xué)必定能找到一個對中國學(xué)生有足夠適應(yīng)度和價值的學(xué)習(xí)方法和體系,一雪前恥,讓中國的孩子在雅思口語的考試中抬起高傲的頭。
