申請(qǐng)美國(guó)學(xué)校除了GT成績(jī)，大學(xué)成績(jī)，簡(jiǎn)歷和自述信外，一般還要求至少三封的推薦信(少數(shù)學(xué)校只要兩封)。推薦信在申請(qǐng)材料中的作用是不言而喻的，其他材料和數(shù)字是反映申請(qǐng)者自己的能力和素質(zhì)的，而推薦信則是從熟悉申請(qǐng)者的第三者的角度對(duì)于申請(qǐng)者進(jìn)行評(píng)論。具體講，推薦信的作用有三個(gè)，一是從第三者角度對(duì)申請(qǐng)者自述信及成績(jī)的確認(rèn)和重新解釋；二是對(duì)申請(qǐng)者的陳述和成績(jī)進(jìn)行補(bǔ)充；三是以同行的身份向錄取委員會(huì)的教授提供自己的看法(尤其是在校教授的推薦信)，包括申請(qǐng)者的素質(zhì)，動(dòng)機(jī)以及申請(qǐng)者是否能從該課程獲益等。作為錄取委員會(huì)對(duì)申請(qǐng)者的考察標(biāo)準(zhǔn)之一，推薦信的作用是不可忽視的，好的推薦信會(huì)幫助申請(qǐng)者拿到學(xué)校的取錄和獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金，而差的，尤其是那些泛泛而論的，內(nèi)容混亂的推薦信往往會(huì)導(dǎo)致申請(qǐng)功虧一簣，甚至?xí)斐芍旅鼈Α?/p>

很多學(xué)生認(rèn)為推薦信無(wú)所謂，所以隨便抄抄完事，有的甚至還有語(yǔ)法錯(cuò)誤，殊不知如此做法，不但損害了推薦人的名聲，同時(shí)也對(duì)自己的申請(qǐng)?jiān)斐刹豢赏旎氐膿p失。還有很多人，包括一些留學(xué)咨詢者，宣稱美國(guó)教授一般不看中國(guó)學(xué)生的推薦信。這絕對(duì)是一種偏見。毫無(wú)疑問(wèn)，對(duì)于泛泛而論，贊揚(yáng)過(guò)度，內(nèi)容重復(fù)的推薦信，教授可能會(huì)看兩行就扔在一邊，但對(duì)于那些真實(shí)、具體、中肯有力的推薦信，教授肯定會(huì)認(rèn)真考慮的。在美國(guó)這個(gè)極重視個(gè)人信用的國(guó)度，可以說(shuō)，推薦人以自己的信用向美國(guó)教授所作的推薦，是整個(gè)申請(qǐng)中的一個(gè)很大的變數(shù)。還有很多學(xué)生認(rèn)為推薦信應(yīng)該只有兩三段長(zhǎng)，絕對(duì)不能超過(guò)一頁(yè)，殊不知，加上收件人推薦人地址，聯(lián)系方式和職位后，一頁(yè)紙還有多少空間？還能說(shuō)明什么呢？如果不是推薦人和對(duì)方教授十分熟悉或有多年交道，這樣的推薦信是起不到什么作用的，如果有作用，那也只能說(shuō)明推薦人根本不愿意給你寫推薦信。

找什么人寫推薦信最好呢？對(duì)于研究類課程的申請(qǐng)，尤其是phD的申請(qǐng)，三封推薦信中應(yīng)該至少有兩封學(xué)術(shù)推薦，即要有兩個(gè)教授或老師推薦你，推薦內(nèi)容主要在你的學(xué)術(shù)能力和研究能力。但要注意，現(xiàn)在即使是研究性的課程，錄取委員會(huì)也比較注重學(xué)生組成的多樣性，所以在推薦時(shí)，不能僅限于課堂和科研，要顧及自己的課外活動(dòng)和社會(huì)活動(dòng)。對(duì)于諸如法學(xué)院、商學(xué)院的申請(qǐng)，則要注重工作推薦信，你老板的推薦信，實(shí)習(xí)單位領(lǐng)導(dǎo)的推薦則更為重要。

選擇推薦人時(shí)要遵循熟悉、專業(yè)兩大原則。

1、推薦人要熟悉你的學(xué)習(xí)和工作，熟悉你的動(dòng)機(jī)和學(xué)習(xí)計(jì)劃，要有比較密切的交流。推薦表中的“Howlonghaveyouknownthereferee﹖Inwhatcapacity﹖”就是問(wèn)的推薦人和被推薦人之間的熟悉程度。在此基礎(chǔ)上，如果推薦人是外國(guó)教授，而該教授和你申請(qǐng)的學(xué)校又很熟悉，這種推薦往往會(huì)起到意想不到的效果；如果推薦人和你申請(qǐng)的學(xué)校教授又比較熟悉，處理好了，推薦信則會(huì)有化腐朽為神奇的力量；如果推薦人雖然不熟悉對(duì)方的教授，但是該專業(yè)內(nèi)很有名的專家(諸如擁有院士之類的頭銜的)，經(jīng)常參加國(guó)際交流，其推薦作用也不可忽視。不過(guò)，名人架子一般也很大，找申請(qǐng)人時(shí)，要先掂量掂量自己的分量。對(duì)于大部分來(lái)說(shuō)，我認(rèn)為找推薦人還是以找熟人為主，一是好說(shuō)話，會(huì)很配合你的申請(qǐng)；二是在國(guó)外教授看來(lái)，很自然很合理。

1、分析自己在申請(qǐng)中的優(yōu)勢(shì)和劣勢(shì)，也就是讀過(guò)管理課程的人都喜歡用一個(gè)專業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)：SWOT分析，即你的優(yōu)勢(shì)（Strengths）和劣勢(shì)（Weaknesses）；機(jī)會(huì)（Opportunities）和風(fēng)險(xiǎn)（Threats）。需要考慮的因素很多，主要包括大學(xué)成績(jī)，TG成績(jī)，科研經(jīng)驗(yàn)，工作經(jīng)驗(yàn)，社會(huì)活動(dòng)以及自己的經(jīng)濟(jì)實(shí)力等等。這些因素直接影響申請(qǐng)時(shí)的材料制作策略和學(xué)校選擇。如果自己的大學(xué)成績(jī)一般，而科研經(jīng)驗(yàn)又沒(méi)有，那么你只能在社會(huì)活動(dòng)和學(xué)習(xí)動(dòng)機(jī)上來(lái)展現(xiàn)自己的優(yōu)勢(shì)了；如果科研經(jīng)驗(yàn)很強(qiáng)，而其他成績(jī)不好，那么你就要考慮那些很重視科研的學(xué)校，這包括申請(qǐng)專業(yè)前10的學(xué)校，或積極和你要申請(qǐng)的領(lǐng)域內(nèi)研究比較有名的教授”套詞”；如果成績(jī)單不到要求的3.0或B怎么辦？那要從成績(jī)的趨勢(shì)看一看有沒(méi)有補(bǔ)救措施，就是常說(shuō)的成績(jī)從大一到大四呈上升趨勢(shì)，表明自己逐漸成熟；或者看一下要申請(qǐng)的專業(yè)要求的重要課程的成績(jī)是不是還不錯(cuò)等；或者干脆不提，只是在自己其他方面強(qiáng)調(diào)自己的優(yōu)勢(shì)。整套申請(qǐng)材料的制作，包括成績(jī)單，TG成績(jī)，簡(jiǎn)歷和自述信，推薦信，作品集等，本身就是一個(gè)包裝，展現(xiàn)自我的過(guò)程，只有充分認(rèn)識(shí)到自己的長(zhǎng)處和不足，才能充分發(fā)揮材料中各部分的功能，展現(xiàn)一個(gè)積極向上，有血有肉的個(gè)體。

2、專業(yè)興趣和愛好，也就是你要申請(qǐng)的專業(yè)，是你要在未來(lái)的2－8年中全身心投入學(xué)習(xí)的課程或科研。如果說(shuō)，自己的優(yōu)勢(shì)和劣勢(shì)比較好評(píng)估的話，專業(yè)選擇就不那么容易了。首先，中國(guó)的本科教育分科是很細(xì)的，細(xì)的很不合理。而美國(guó)的本科教育，科系之間并沒(méi)有那么詳細(xì)區(qū)分，而且每個(gè)學(xué)生可以拿到2－3個(gè)學(xué)位，如果他愿意的話。本來(lái)本科教育就是基礎(chǔ)教育，素質(zhì)教育，然而中國(guó)的分科如此之細(xì)，以至許多學(xué)生更本不知道自己應(yīng)該申請(qǐng)什么專業(yè)。解決這個(gè)問(wèn)題，只有到學(xué)校網(wǎng)站查詢，你感興趣的專業(yè)有什么基礎(chǔ)要求，也就是說(shuō)，該研究生課程主要招收什么背景的學(xué)生，要求那些基礎(chǔ)課程和專業(yè)基礎(chǔ)課程，教授研究的項(xiàng)目主要用到什么方面的知識(shí)和技能，然后對(duì)照自己的課程和科研經(jīng)歷，就可以判斷出自己是否適合或申請(qǐng)成功率如何。其次，很多中國(guó)學(xué)生不喜歡自己的專業(yè)，甚至很討厭，但又不知道自己喜歡什么專業(yè)，即使知道自己喜歡的東西，也是很模糊，沒(méi)有相關(guān)的知識(shí)和實(shí)踐。我碰到無(wú)數(shù)的咨詢客戶回答我這個(gè)問(wèn)題這樣回答，”我喜歡偏文的專業(yè)”或”我喜歡篇理學(xué)科”等。這種情況就十分棘手，專業(yè)興趣不清楚，根本無(wú)法申請(qǐng)。不清楚自己的專業(yè)方向，你無(wú)法展示自己的優(yōu)勢(shì)，也無(wú)法說(shuō)服教授你的動(dòng)機(jī)單純。我的建議就是，要么參加工作，要么廣泛閱讀一下自己可能感興趣的領(lǐng)域的出版物，或和內(nèi)行人談一談，確定一下自己的專業(yè)方向，然后在考慮申請(qǐng)。

3、職業(yè)理想，也就是自己畢業(yè)之后想做什么樣的工作，是想在大學(xué)作老師，作研究，還是到一個(gè)公司做技術(shù)或管理工作。這牽涉到你是申請(qǐng)PHD還是Master，是申請(qǐng)Professional課程，還是Research課程的關(guān)鍵。如果你認(rèn)為自己不適合做科研或大學(xué)教學(xué)工作，顯然你沒(méi)有必要申請(qǐng)一個(gè)長(zhǎng)達(dá)5年的PHD。如果你的專業(yè)是教育或語(yǔ)言方面的，你希望畢業(yè)后在美國(guó)當(dāng)教師，那么根據(jù)自己的經(jīng)濟(jì)實(shí)力，要么申請(qǐng)一個(gè)M.Ed 或Doctor of Education（一般自費(fèi)），畢業(yè)后可以拿到教師執(zhí)照；或申請(qǐng)一個(gè)教育或語(yǔ)言學(xué)的MS或PHD,畢業(yè)后再考執(zhí)照。

研究學(xué)校，是一個(gè)漫長(zhǎng)而繁瑣的工作。了解自我，并充分展示自我，這只是申請(qǐng)中的一半。留學(xué)申請(qǐng)還有另一半同樣重要的事情，就是對(duì)于學(xué)校，系，專業(yè)和教授研究項(xiàng)目的了解。無(wú)論是自述信的寫作，面試和套詞，都不能沒(méi)有關(guān)于學(xué)校和專業(yè)的信息，都不能沒(méi)有你為什么選擇該學(xué)校該專業(yè)的思考。一個(gè)完美的自述信應(yīng)該是有一條無(wú)形的線把你的過(guò)去和你申請(qǐng)的學(xué)校和專業(yè)緊緊的連在一起，就像我在”上海姑娘的羅賓漢情結(jié)”中所論述的那篇自述信一樣。美國(guó)和全世界成千上萬(wàn)的大學(xué)，為什么你單單申請(qǐng)這些學(xué)校，為什么單單對(duì)這個(gè)專業(yè)感興趣？這是一個(gè)教授和簽證官同樣感興趣的問(wèn)題，也是你在申請(qǐng)中不可避免的一個(gè)部分。正因?yàn)椋@么些學(xué)校，整個(gè)學(xué)校調(diào)查的過(guò)程就顯得特別繁瑣和沉重。所以我的建議是盡早開始學(xué)校調(diào)查工作，最好從大二或大三的上學(xué)期開始。具體查什么，怎么查才能盡快找到自己所需要的關(guān)鍵信息，怎樣避免走彎路？這我已經(jīng)在前面的選校部分做了詳細(xì)說(shuō)明，這里就不多說(shuō)了。

可以說(shuō)，所有的申請(qǐng)工作，包括文書材料，選校，套詞，面試以及簽證，都和以上我講的兩個(gè)認(rèn)識(shí)緊密相連，實(shí)際上是這兩個(gè)認(rèn)識(shí)的自然結(jié)果。知己知彼，百戰(zhàn)不殆，就是留
