沅江以“流水歸宿之地”而得名，沅江市區(qū)內(nèi)主要文物景觀有魁星樓、凌云塔、鎮(zhèn)江塔、洞庭湖博物館?？菢俏挥阢浣袇^(qū)東北，建于清朝乾隆五十九年（公元1794年），樓高15米，為三層尖頂樓閣式建筑，每層飛檐置琉璃飾物，一層為龍，二層為鳳，三層為魚；尖頂為三個球狀琉璃寶葫蘆；二樓供奉道教認為主宰文章興衰的神奎星神，又稱“魁星菩薩”，因此歷代文人都來此頂禮膜拜。凌云2塔位于沅江市區(qū)以南5公里的萬子湖畔，建成于清嘉慶二年（公元1797年）。塔高33米，七層八方，為中空樓閣式石塔，共有花崗巖石料166906塊；建塔用來作“鎮(zhèn)妖孽，除水患”之意，塔尖以三個相連的球形葫蘆狀塔剎作頂，每層檐角均為石刻倒立魚龍裝飾，十分壯觀，是洞庭湖現(xiàn)存的兩座水中寶塔之一。鎮(zhèn)江塔位于沅江市區(qū)東南35公里的小口塞湖，建于清乾隆四十七年（公元1782年）。塔高23.95米，外形為八方八角七級，內(nèi)部為三層用木梯相連。鎮(zhèn)江塔寄寓古人鎮(zhèn)水患、馴江流之愿，古人說鎮(zhèn)江塔的氣勢“遠挹七十二峰之岳色，近臨八百余里之湖波”。洞庭湖博物館，在沅江市區(qū)內(nèi)的瓊湖之畔，收藏了洞庭湖地區(qū)的生物、植物標(biāo)本。其中有生物200余種、魚類114種、水產(chǎn)植物71種。該館陳列廳800平方米，向游客介紹洞庭湖的變遷及歷史，并藏有歷史文物逾萬件，其中古字畫2000余幅，玉器、青銅器、陶瓷器等數(shù)千件。沅江北為洞庭湖沖積平原，河渠縱橫，有成片的農(nóng)田和林網(wǎng)，十分壯觀。三個大型的蘆葦種植場，共有35萬畝，一望無際，一派水鄉(xiāng)蘆蕩風(fēng)光。
