      第一篇:英語翻譯

An American studying in China had an appointment at noon.As he was getting on his bicycle a Chinese friend passed by.“吃了嗎?”The young Chinese asked. This, of course, is a common Chinese greeting around meal time and the American merely nodded with a smile, waved goodbye and went off.He realized that his friend’s remark was nothing more than a Chinese way of saying hello or Hi.If the greeting had been put literally into English ”Have you eaten yet?“ Or “Have you had your lunch? ” It would have sounded rather unusual. To Americans, this greeting might mean this: “I haven't either.Come on, let’s go together and get something to eat.” or “If you haven’t, I was just going to invite you to my place.” In other words, it could indicate an invitation to a meal. There is a similar Chinese greeting, such as ”上哪兒去???””到哪兒去啦?” Which if translated literally, would be “Where are you going?” Or “Where have you been?” The natural reaction of most English-speaking people to this greeting would most likely be “It’s none of your business!”

Fortunately, not all greetings sound strange or arouse displeasure. Many are similar, some are merely different. While greetings in many languages often indicate the time of day, there may be inconsistencies within a language.English has Good morning, Good afternoon and Good evening but not Good noon. And Good night is not a greeting at all, but an expression of farewell.“Privacy” is translated as “yin si” in Chinese.Traditionally,in the Chinese mind, “yin si” is associated with that which is closed or unfair. If someone is said to have “yin si”, meddlers(好事者)will be attracted to pry into his or her affairs. So people always state that they don't have “yin si”.On the contrary,Americans often declare their intention to protect their privacy.Their understanding of privacy is that others have no right to pry into things which belong to themselves alone and have nothing to do with others.manners while dining in western countries When serving, serve from the left and pick-up the dish from the right.Beverages, however, are to be both served as well as removed from the right-hand side.If you are having difficulty getting food onto your fork, use a small piece of bread or your knife to assist. No one should ask why another doesn't want any of a dish or why he has not finished a serving. There should be no negative comments about the food.Wait for your host or hostess to rise before getting up from a dinner party table.Thank your host and/or hostess when leaving a dinner party.Once dessert, after-dinner coffee, or the equivalent is served, be wary not to overstay your welcome. The party who first wishes to end the event should rise and say something like, “This has been such a nice evening. We hope we can see you again soon.” manners while dining in China Never point the chopsticks at another person. This amounts to insulting that person and is a major faux pas.Never wave your chopsticks around as if they were an extension of your hand gestures.Never bang chopsticks like drumsticks. This is akin to telling others at the table you are a beggar.Pick the food on the dish that is at the top and nearest to you in distance.Never rummage through the dish or pick from the far side for your favorite food. After you have picked up a food item, do not put it back in the dish. The elderly or guest(s)of honor are usually the first to start the meal. The youngest or least senior may serve the eldest or most senior first, as part of the Confucian value of respecting seniors. The youngest on the table addresses all of the elder members at the table before starting, perhaps telling them to please “eat rice” as a signal to help themselves. The best food in a dish should be left to the elderly, children, or the guest of honor, even if they are one's favorite. The eldest person present, or the guest of honor, is given a seat facing the door. When the hostess says her food is not good enough, the guest must disagree and tell her it is one of the finest foods they have ever tasted.“Sweeping the dust” before the Spring Festival means a thorough cleaning of houses to sweep away bad luck in the past year. This custom shows a good wish of putting away old things to welcome a new life. The Spring Couplet, also called “couplet” , is a special form of literature in China. On the eve of the Spring Festival, every household will paste on doors a spring couplet written on red paper to give a happy and prosperous atmosphere of the Festival.Paper-cuts, usually with auspicious patterns, give a happy and prosperous atmosphere of the Festival and express the good wishes of Chinese people looking forward to a good life.In addition to pasting paper-cuts on windows, it is common for Chinese to paste the character “Fu”, big and small, on walls, doors and doorposts around the houses. Some people even invert the character “fu” to signify that blessing has arrived. On New Year's Eve, the whole family will sit together to make jiaozi and celebrate the Spring Festival. The shape of jiaozi is like a gold ingot from ancient China. So people eat them and wish for money and treasure. The firecracker is unique product in China. The first thing every Chinese household does in the lunar New Year is to set off firecrackers and fireworks, which are meant to bid farewell to the old year and usher in the new.On the first day of the Chinese lunar year, everybody puts on their best clothes and pays ceremonial calls on their relatives and friends, wishing them all the luck in the coming year.Juniors will greet seniors, wishing them health and longevity, while seniors will give juniors some gift money as a wish for their safety in the coming year. With the development of the new technology, there is a change on the way of giving New Years greetings. In recent year, it is common to send New Years greetings by such modern means of communication as telephones, emails and text messages.I will give you a coat as a present. The front is safety, the back happiness, the collar auspiciousness, the sleeves satisfaction, the buttons enjoyment and the pockets warmness.Wear every day.Wish you a happy New Year.As the New Year comes, I will only give you five “do's” as a present.Do be merry!Do be healthy!Do be safe!Do be satisfied!Do remember me!Aspect of celebration may include gift-giving, Christmas trees, display of Nativity sets, church attendance, the Father Christmas/Santa Claus myth, and family gatherings. The word Christmas is derived from Middle English “Christemasse”.It is a contraction meaning “Christ's mass”.The name of the holiday is often shortened to Xmas because Roman letter “X” resembles the Greek letter X, an abbreviation for Christ.By mid-December, most homes will also be decorated with Christmas trees, colored lights and paper or plastic decorations around the rooms. These days, many more people also decorate garden trees or house walls with colored electric lights, a habit which has long been popular in USA.In many countries, most people post Christmas greeting cards to their friends and family, and these cards will be hung on the walls of their homes.“Father Christmas”(or “Santa Claus”)has become the human faces of Christmas.Pictures will be seen everywhere of the old man with long white beard, red coat, and bag of toys.Children are taught that he brings them presents the night before Christmas and many children up to the age of 7 or 8 really believe this is true.In most countries, it is said that he lives near the North Pole, and arrives through the sky on a sledge(snow-cart)pulled by reindeer. He comes into houses down the chimney at midnight and places presents for the children in socks or bags by their beds or in front of the family Christmas tree.On the Double Ninth Festival, people customarily climb mountains, appreciate chrysanthemum flowers, drink chrysanthemum wine. The Double Ninth Festival is also the “Old Men Festival”.Old people are especially meant to improve their health by taking part in the activities on the day of the festival. The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating zongzi(glutinous rice wrapped to form a pyramid using bamboo leaves)and racing dragon boats.February has long been a month of romance. With the sweet smell of roses in the air, romantic films hit cinemas and love stories fill newspapers and magazines. On the 14th day, it is a custom for a boy to take his girlfriend out to dinner, buy her flowers and chocolates, write poems, sing to her or even spell out her name with rose petals! This is what you see on Valentine’s Day, a day named after Valentine who was a priest(牧師)in the third century Rome.On Easter Sunday children wake up to find that the Easter Bunny has left them baskets of candy. He has also hidden the eggs that they decorated earlier that week.Children hunt for the eggs all around the house.Neighborhoods and organizations hold Easter egg hunts, and the child who finds the most eggs wins a prize.Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31.Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses”, carving Jack-o'-lanterns, reading scary stories and watching horror movies The value of long-term observation of environmental factors has only been recognized relatively recently although some monitoring of the environmental factors have been in existence for over a century.Whoever said “waste not, want not” hasn't had much influence on 276 million Americans. In l997 they threw out more than 195 billion kg of garbage. That means each man, woman and child tossed out an average of 725 kgs of trash. And that's just the benign solid waste. Each year American industries dump.More than 1.l billion kg of toxic wastes--like lead compounds, chromium, ammonia and organic solvents into the air, water and ground. The really bad news is that most of the planet's 6 billion people are, beginning to follow in the footsteps of the US and the rest of the developed world.“Either we need to control ourselves or nature will,” says George Liss of Loomis, California, a veteran of recycling and solid-waste programs. As he sees it, garbage needs to become a thing of the past. That may seem impossible, but it's not unprecedented. In nature, Liss points out, there is no such thing as waste. What dies or is discarded by one part if the ecosystem nourishes another part.Liss says humanity can emulate nature's garbage-free ways, but it will require innovative technology and a big change in attitude.Kalundborg, Denmark exists an “eco-industrial park”.It shows how much can be gained by recycling and resource sharing.Within the park, a power company, pharmaceuticals firm, wallboard producer and refinery share in the production and use of steam, gas and cooling water.Excess heat warns nearby homes and agricultural greenhouses. One company's waste becomes another's resource. The power plant sells the sulfur dioxide from its smokestacks to the Wallboard Company, which uses the compound as a raw material.Dozens of these environmentally sound industrial parks are being developed all over the world.Biotechnology is giving us additional tools to cope with waste--and run it to our advantage.Microbes can take toxic substances in contaminated soil and convert them into harmless byproducts.Scientists' at Monsanto and Heartland Fiber are working toward engineering corn plants with the kind of fiber content that paper companies would find attractive. So long as the genetic tinkering poses no ecological threat, that approach could tap into a huge stream of agricultural waste, turning some of it into industrial ingredients. In consumer markets, recycling has already spawned an array of alchemists.Jackets are being made from discarded plastic bottles, briefcases from worn--out tires and belts from beer-bottle caps.Even though the US has barely begun to get serious about recycling, about 25% of its l95 billion kg of municipal garbage are now salvaged for some sort of second life.Jesse Ausubel, director of the Program for the Human Environment at Rockefeller University in New York City predicts that architects will increasingly rely on new types of strong and lightweight, foamed glass.Ausubel thinks we could see foamed glass replace much of the concrete in today's buildings. There are limits to how many lives you can give to a pile of debris. In the long run, we have to reduce the amount of material we use in the first place. Some progress is being made--aluminum cans and plastic soda bottles have become thinner over the years, but more reductions will require a whole new kind of manufacturing process. That is where nanotechnology plays a role.In this emerging field researchers expect to create products by building them atom by atom, molecule by molecule. This bottom-up nanotechnological way of making things differs from the traditional fabrication methods that create so much waste along the way.Researchers have made headway toward molecule-size transistors and wires. These laboratory feats make talk of sugar cube-size computers less speculative than it was a few years ago.But technology is not enough.Just as critical are changes in attitudes and lifestyles.Brad Allen by AT&T's vice president for environment, safety, and health, believes our move from the industrial age could help enormously. At present, he says, 29% of AT&T's management force telecommutes, meaning less reliance on cars. This, Allen by speculates, could be part of something bigger--a shift in our view of what enhances our quality of life.Maybe we'll put less value on things that use lots of materials and more on things that don't swallow up resources--1ike telecommuting and the Internet.Maybe downloading music from the Web will reduce the demand for CD cases. We still have an opportunity to use computers to cut consumption of paper and the trees it comes from.As society becomes more information-rich, the easier it will be to find uses for discarded materials. One person's garbage is another's treasure. When that attitude goes global, the human beings of the new millennium may be able to look back on their former garbage-producing ways as a forgivable error of their youth as a species.Animals are such agreeable friends they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.Under the Montreal Protocol, developing countries committed themselves to halving consumption and production of CFCs by 2005 and achieving an 85 per cent cut by 2007.The hole in the ozone layer, which protects Earth from the Sun's ultraviolet rays, was first detected nearly 30 years ago.It was then three times the size of Australia, itself covering nearly 3 million square miles.A French photographer touring the world to take pictures of the world's oldest and biggest trees says his images will be used in an exhibition to try to save the world.Hutin's message is that the human population is not taking trees seriously and they will die if the human population does not change its attitude to them.We must save the remnants of these old trees and although it is difficult with the hazards of the world, that action will save the world.
