我們說(shuō)“火上加油”,英國(guó)人則說(shuō)”to add fuel to the flame”,兩者也完全一樣。

例如漢語(yǔ)中的”落花流水”用來(lái)表示被打得大敗之意,譯成英文便是“to be shattered to pieces”?!

例如“銅墻鐵壁”可譯成“wall of bronze” 已經(jīng)足夠,實(shí)在無(wú)須說(shuō)成“wall of copper and iron”?!

例如“樹(shù)倒猢猻散”可譯成“Once the tree falls, the monkeys on it will flee helter-skelter,”其中helter-skelter是“慌慌張張”之意,是增添的成分,原文雖無(wú)其字而有其義,加了使形象突出,有聲有色。

例如“夾著尾巴”應(yīng)譯成”with the tail between the legs”;“戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)販子”是英文

A rolling 1 stone gathers no moss滾石不生苔a gentleman′s agreement君子協(xié)定go through fire and water赴湯蹈火從以上例子我們不難看出,這些習(xí)語(yǔ)的字面意義、形象意義幾乎相同,且其隱含意義也相同,我們說(shuō)此類習(xí)語(yǔ)的字面意義和形象意義所傳達(dá)出來(lái)的文化信息是相同的,它們?cè)谶M(jìn)行英漢互譯時(shí)可以直譯。

You′d better pull up your socks next term. “pull up your socks”是英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ),意譯“鼓起勁”,如直譯為“掛起你的襪子”,會(huì)使讀者不知所云。Peter was a dog in the man over the microwave oven. A dog in the manger狗占馬槽是一個(gè)源于《伊索寓言》的習(xí)語(yǔ)。 He was left and high and dry.

To dismiss John from his job when his wife has just left him would be hitting a man when he is down. Mary never accepted an invitation unless Anne was included in it.It was a case of love me, love my dog.

The staff member folded like an acc on jion. His disapproving attitude toward cars is simply sour grapes, the fact is that he would like to have a car but can′t afford to buy one. A little pot is easy hot.

例如,the heel of Achilles譯為:阿基里斯的腳踵。 The heel of Achilles(Achilles′heel)比喻惟一的致命弱點(diǎn)。

      習(xí)語(yǔ)從其結(jié)構(gòu)來(lái)看,有其自身的完整性,其中各個(gè)組成部分是固定的,不可任意拆開(kāi)或替換,如“pull somebody’s leg”(愚弄某人)不可變單數(shù)為復(fù)數(shù);“by twos and threes”(三三兩兩)不可按漢語(yǔ)習(xí)語(yǔ)改為“by threes and twos”.

英語(yǔ)的習(xí)語(yǔ)也是如此,不能逐字理解,而應(yīng)從整體去認(rèn)識(shí)其特殊性和習(xí)慣性,如:do somebody brown(使某人上當(dāng)),show the white feather(顯示膽怯)等。

      love me, love my dog(愛(ài)屋及烏)。

英國(guó)人和中國(guó)人信仰不同,英國(guó)人多信仰基督教,有不少習(xí)語(yǔ)與之有關(guān),如:go to the church(做禮拜),power of the keys(教皇的權(quán)力)。

英語(yǔ)中也有類似的習(xí)語(yǔ),如:fly on the wheel(狂妄自大的人)。

諸如此類的習(xí)語(yǔ)比比皆是,如:“never fish nor fowl”的是“非驢非馬”,“no smoke without fire”的是“無(wú)風(fēng)不起浪”。

Armed to the teeth武裝到牙齒;paper tiger紙老虎;shuttle diplomacy穿梭外交;tower of ivory象牙塔;give the green light開(kāi)綠燈;as easy as tu rning over one’s hand易如反掌; eat the leek穿小鞋;鴉雀無(wú)聲It’s utterly quiet.2.2 意譯法

有些習(xí)語(yǔ)由于文化因素的影響,在翻譯時(shí)無(wú)法保留原來(lái)語(yǔ)句的字面意義和形象意義,也無(wú)法找到同義的習(xí)語(yǔ)借用,這時(shí)可將原文的形象更換成讀者所熟悉的另一個(gè)譯文形象,從而轉(zhuǎn)達(dá)出原文的語(yǔ)用目的,譯出隱含意義,如漢語(yǔ)中的“落花流水”通常指被打得大敗,譯成英文是“to be shattered to pieces”;又如“The dog that will fetch a bone will carry a bone.” To be quite honest with you, I don’t know the first thing about it.Have a bee in one’s bonnet胡思亂想; 他心頭十五個(gè)吊桶打水,七上八下。His mind was in a turmoil.2.3 借用法

Spend money like water,揮金如土; like father, like son,有其父必有其子;You will cross the bridge when you come to it. Many drops of water make an ocean.

在漢語(yǔ)習(xí)語(yǔ)中,常有并列的對(duì)偶結(jié)構(gòu),即用兩個(gè)不同的喻體表達(dá)相同的寓意,前后含義重復(fù),遇到這種情況就可用節(jié)譯法處理,省去并列重復(fù)部分,如“銅墻鐵壁”譯為“wall of bronze”,不必說(shuō)成“wall of copper and iron”,長(zhǎng)吁短嘆用節(jié)譯法譯為“sighing deeply”。石沉大海,杳無(wú)音信disappear without a single trace;2.5 增譯法 班門(mén)弄斧 show off one’s proficiency with the axe before Lu Ban, the master carpenter 結(jié)語(yǔ)
