Our Future: A Battle between Dreams and Reality Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:
When I was in the primary school, I have a dream.I want to invent a device which could bring you from one place to another in no time at all. When I was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university. And when eventually I got into the university, my dream was to graduate. How pathetic! When we grow up, we dream less and become more realistic. Why? Why do we have to change our dreams, so, so in order to let it be “fulfilled”? Why do we have to surrender to the so-called “reality”? What is the reality actually?
Ladies and gentlemen, the reality is not real.It is a barrier keeping us from all the possible fantasies.Flying, for example, had been a dream to mankind for thousands of years.A hundred years ago, “man could not fly” was still regarded as the “reality”.Now if that was really the reality, what did the Wright brothers do? How did some of you get to Macao? Only when we believe that the reality is not real can we soar with our dreams.People say that our future is a battle between the reality and our dreams. And if, unfortunately, Mr.Reality wins this war, then I see no future of mankind at all.AIDS will never be curable as this IS the reality;People living in the undeveloped countries will suffer from starvation forever as this IS the reality;Disputes among different countries would never be settled as this misunderstandings and intolerance IS the reality.Ladies and gentlemen, how many of you have a dream of being able to make a lot of money? Please raise your hands.Oh, quite a number of you!Actually, ladies and gentlemen, this is not a dream, but a task.Every one of us has to make a living, right? Anyway I hope your task will be accomplished. How many of you think that you have already fulfilled your dream and that you don't dream anymore? Dear adjudicators, what do you think? C.S.Lewis once said, “You are never too old to dream a new dream.” So for our future, please dream and be unrealistic. Now that I am a university student, my goal is to graduate with excellences. But at the same time, I have a dream deeply rooted in our future. One day, people living in the areas now sweltering with the horror of wars will
able to sit with their families and enjoy their every moment. One day, people from the rich countries are willing to share what they have with those from the poor countries and those from the poor countries will eventually be able to make their own happy living themselves. One day, different cultures in this age of globalization will coexist with tolerance and the unfriendly confrontations among them will be eliminated. One day, the globe will share the dream with me and we will all contribute to making our dream come true. One day, our dream will defeat the reality!Thank you very much.主持人:Thank you.曹豐:Thand you.ASK:Now in the age of the Internet, reading books does not seem as important as it once was.Do you think people can learn as much on the Internet as they can by reading books? Which method do you prefer? ANSWER:Thank you very much. And hello again ladies and gentlemen.Actually, I don't really agree with the first sentence of this topic:“ In the age of the Internet, reading books does not seem as important as it was once.”Why? Why is it the case? Why is it the situation, ladies and gentlemen? Actually, Internet or books are just like tea or coffee. They are similar, but they are different.University students nowadays love to use the Internet to search for information when they are working with their essays.Like, last semester, when I was working with my physics essay, I logged into Google and I searched for “NEWTON” and all the laws and theories of Newton just popped out and I can choose whichever one I like to use.But when I walked into the library, all the books came out and I have to choose which one to read. How inconvenient!Maybe you can say at this moment,“Oh,Internet is better, books no use.” So I have to use the Internet, right? But let's see the things in another way.I love traveling a lot and I love to bring a book with me.And I love to read my Da Vinci Code when I was having my trip on a bus or on a ship.Actually, whenever it is, wherever you go, whatever you are doing, you can take out a book and read if you feel like doing so.Now who will bother to take a laptop and switch it on, and search for the Internet connection, and look for stories to read. How inconvenient! So at this very moment I think it's quite dangerous for me, because I think I'm unable to answer the question in the topic ”Which method do you prefer, Internet or books?" because I love the feeling of conjuring a hundred pages of Harry Potter, more than scrolling down the screen;but at the same time I love the feeling of searching the things, the speed of my searching for things on the Internet,my time in the library. So in this age of Internet, in this age of modernization, in this age of civilization, why do you have to force someone to choose between the Internet and books? I prefer using both of them.Thank you very much.ASK:Contestant No.13.Thank you very much for encouraging us to be unrealistic dreamers(Thank you)and not surrender to Mr.Reality.(hehe..)With the traffic jam getting worse--especially in big cities--I'm actually very interested in your childhood dream:T o invent a device that can move people around easily. Is this still your dream? If not,why do you give it up? Is it because it is considered unrealistic? Thank you.ANSWER:Thank you very much. This is not my dream now.Not because it is(not), unrealistic.Maybe you can say it's unrealistic. But if I,my interest is still inventing this device, I will keep on trying my best to invent this decive. My changing of my dreams is because of the fact that I realized my interest does not lie in science. Now I am a law school student. But last semester, as I've just mentioned, I was working on my physics essay paper and actually last semester I was a student in the school of aerospace.Oh my god, aerospace! And I've changed my major to law school. And so the changing of my dream is actually because of the fact that I realize my interest lies in, maybe communicating with others, or having interactions with the others.Science is very fantastic, but it's not my piece of cake.Yes, so that's the reason.Thank you very much.ASK:Thank you very much for your speeches.Talding about Internet,I just want to know your view.Do you believe everything is ture on the Internet? If not,why not?
ANSWER:.Thank you very much.I don't believe everything is true in the Internet. This is a straight forward answer. And if not,why not?Because I don't believe them. And I have an experience of meeting someone on the Internet who claims to be a girl.Yes and,a very sad, sorry story for me.But yes,for this reason,I think I don't believe that everything on the Internet is true. But I will try my best to discover if that was true or not,or that was falsified or not.Thank you very much.ASK:Contestant No.13.Thank you very much for your speeches. You were talking about dreams being realistic or unrealistic and your current dream is to graduate from law school. But what is your realistic or unrealistic dream after that? What do you want to use your graduation in law for? ANSWER:Thank you very much.Actually,my dream,as mentioned in the last part of my speech,is to share my feelings, share my dreams with the globe. And when all the people in this Earth have my dream, they will work
hard for the social betterment,I believe in that.So after I've graduated from law school,I think I will try my best to persuade the others to,to accept my dream, and that is exactly why I am here.I am here trying to persuade you all,I think you all, after listening to my speech, hopefully, you can try to understand my dream and that we are all a member of the global village, and we have to try our best to work hard for the social betterment of all. This is why I want to be,saying, speaking something here, and that is my goal--or realistic or unrealistic dream after I've graduated.I think I will try my best to du what I've said before.Thank you very much.
第三篇:曹豐演講稿
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:
When I was in the primary school, I have a dream.I want to invent a device which could bring you from one place to another in no time at all. When I was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university. And when eventually I got into the university, my dream was to graduate.(personal anecdote)
How pathetic! When we grow up, we dream less and become more realistic. Why? Why do we have to change our dreams, so, so in order to let it be “fulfilled”? Why do we have to surrender to the so-called “reality”? What IS the reality actually? Ladies and gentlemen, the reality is not real.It is a barrier keeping us from all the possible fantasies.(main arguments)Flying, for example, had been a dream to mankind for thousands of years.A hundred years ago, “man could not fly” was still regarded as the “reality”.Now if that was really the reality, what did the Wright brothers do? How did some of you get to Macau? Only when we believe that the reality is not real can we soar with our dreams.People say that our future is a battle between the reality and our dreams.(counterargument)And if, unfortunately, Mr.Reality wins this war, then I see no future of mankind at all.AIDS will never be curable as this IS the reality;People living in the
undeveloped countries will suffer from starvation forever as this IS the reality;4)Disputes among different countries would never be settled as this misunderstandings and
intolerance IS the reality.Ladies and gentlemen, how many of you have a dream of being able to make a lot of money? Please raise your hands.Oh, quite a number of you!Actually, ladies and
gentlemen, this is not a dream, but a task.Every one of us has to make a living, right? Anyway I hope your task will be accomplished. How many of you think that you have already fulfilled your dream and that you don't dream anymore? Dear 5)adjudicators,what do you think? C.S.Lewis once said, “You are never too old to dream a new dream.” So for our future, please dream and be unrealistic.(call to action)
Now that I am a university student, my goal is to graduate with excellences. But at the same time, I have a dream deeply rooted in our future. One day, people living in the areas now 6)sweltering with the horror of wars will be able to sit with their families and enjoy their every moment. One day, people from the rich countries are willing to share what they have with those from the poor countries and those from the poor countries will eventually be able to make their own happy living themselves. One day, different cultures in this age of globalization will coexist with tolerance and the unfriendly confrontations among them will be 7)eliminated.One day, the globe will share the dream with me and we will all contribute to making our dream come true. One day, our dream will defeat the reality!(Conclusion)Thank you very much.My Tour Agency
This morning, I would like to argue for true ecological tourism, or, ecotourism. To me, a true ecotour is a tour that allows us to express our passion for nature and for our cultural heritage.(No introduction)
I love traveling. One of my most memorable trips was climbing the Great Wall. There, I cherished seeing people of all races and ages gathered on this ancient edifice.I cherished
seeing these people smiling at each other, making way for each other, and reminding each other to watch their steps. While I love traveling, I'm also sad to see the damage tourism has done to nature and to our historical relics. Many tour agencies like to label their business “ecotours”.But they have cut down trees and filled up rivers in order to build roads, hotels and cable cars so as to attract tourists. And on their tours, some people pick flowers, catch birds and throw away food that might poison animals. This is not ecotourism at all.True ecotourism involves responsibility. While we enjoy the beauty of nature, we should also help protect it.Here let me share an experience.Once, I joined others as young volunteers in an outing. The excursion took us to the peak of a mountain where we got a beautiful view of the city.We were, however, not ordinary tourists. As we were climbing, we were also picking up the trash left on the ground by other climbers. Finally, we carried, in large bags, all the trash down the mountain. The excursion was exhausting, but I believe, after this experience, not a single one of us will ever litter any tourist spot. Moreover, when we were cleaning up the mountain slope, we caught eyes of many others. Some of them might see us as foolish, but more of them, I believe, will take note of the need to protect the environment. My experience was one of an ecotourist. We took, but we also gave. However, on the idea of ecotourism, there are many misunderstandings.I once
telephoned several travel agencies to inquire about ecotours. And here is how it went:“Hello!”
“Hi, I'm interested in the ecotour you've advertised.”
“Oh, yeah, ecotour.”
“I'm wondering if we should do anything special as ecotourists.”
“I'm sorry? Oh, nothing… Just enjoy the scenery.”
Every conversation ended up with “enjoying the scenery.” No one mentioned “protecting the wildlife,” “respecting local customs,” or “preparing a bag for garbage.” None of them made any mention of the obligation and responsibility on the part of tourists.Like other students, I have had many dreams of what I would like to do after graduation. One of these dreams is to run a travel agency. In this travel agency, I would do three things: call to action
First, I would like to have a staff of people who love nature as they love their mothers and can pass on to the customers the same kind of love.Second, I would like to let the customers appreciate the beauty of nature in those natural reservations, safari parks and wild forests, and show them how they can contribute in return for the air, water and nourishment that nature provides.Last but not least, I'd encourage the customers to work as volunteers as I once did. They would live close to nature by cleaning up the natural resorts and planting trees as mementos of their visit.I still remember when I was standing on the top of the Great Wall, I could see in some distance many bare mountains with no trees, nothing green. It is my dream that one day I would organize tours for areas that are suffering from erosion and deforestation, and we would plant trees there.Ecotourism should be an experience of learning and offering-it
should not be just seeing the famous sites and posing for photos. On the flag of my agency, I would like to print this motto:!
Take nothing away except memory;leave nothing behind except your trees.Join my tour, my dear friends! It will make China green-and make this world a better place to live.Thank you very much. What was the Topic of the speech? What was the style of Intro?Style of Body? enrolled)
2.a.Enunciation / Presentation/ Connecting to the Audience/ Relating to the
material
b.Movie dialogue – practice public speaking focusing on enunciation and
presentation, don’t have to worry about fillers or creating own words.c.In-class exercises common issues to improve:
i.DO NOT use monotone;mark/circle words to stress naturally.ii.Talk to the audience DO NOT read to the audience
iii.DO NOT rush;speak with natural breaks and pauses(at the end of
the sentence/thought)
iv.Enunciate = difficult words speak slowly – DO NOT rush words or
it will slur together and can not understand.(ex.Usually)
v.Eye contact – be more natural
vi.Body language – more confident
3.a.What is to persuade?Formulate an opinion and communicate that
opinion effectively
b.Why learn to speak persuasively? Everyday Every profession requires
persuasive speech
c.Persuasive speech is like giving directions to a roadmap
4.a.Introduction – WAKE THEM UP!Attention Grabber and leads audience
in your direction: DO NOT summarize topic as an introduction.i.quote and cite source
ii.personal anecdote
iii.counter statement
iv.rhetorical scenario
b.Transitional Statement – summary of speech/ purpose:“I’m here today to tell you...”
c.Body I – main arguments:has to relate to your audience demographics
i.Argument 1
ii.Supporting facts
iii.Argument 2
iv.Supporting facts
d.Transitional Statement – introduce counter argument:“Some people say/ some studies claim.....”
e.Body II – counterargument
i.Summarize counterargument
ii.retort to counterargument
f.Transitional Statement – call to action: “How did I put into practice what I say.....”
g.Body III – call to action
i.practical application and/or
ii.supporting statements
h.Transitional Statement – “In conclusion....”
i.Conclusion
i.Short restatement and summary of Body I
ii.Restate or resolve in a conclusion sentence your introductory sentence.Another clarification re: persuasive speech
A student asked me a couple of questions which I answered hurriedly as I was going to another class. They were good questions, so I thought I'd restate my answers for the class.Student Question:Do we have to come up with a new argument for Body III, counter-argument?
Teacher Response:No.Remember that your counter argument in Body III is about giving a retort to a counter-argument to your topic. So, in Body I and II you have 2 arguments and supporting statements regarding your topic. This is different than Body III.In Body III you don't have to give a new argument to support your topic. In Body III,you do have to explain why the counter-argument is wrong. You can do this by using a narrative figure(ex.historical or famous person narrative)or statistics or other facts.Example-
Topic:Do your homework
Argument I:If you do your homework you will be smarter.Argument II:If you do your homework you will get a better job.Counter Argument: Some studies say, doing homework is a waste of time.A Harvard study claims that doing homework is a waste of time and you can't learn from doing homework.Retort to Counter Argument: 1)This study is wrong.Have you heard of Albert Einstein?Einstein read books and research papers and calculated formulas everynight. He called it his homework. That's how Einstein discovered the theory of relativity.OR2)Yale and Princeton studies show that doing homework for 3 hrs every night is the best way to learn.Student Question:What is the difference between my arguments(Body I&II)and my practical steps(Body IV)?
Teacher Response:topic.Your practical steps are different and they are not arguments.Example-
Topic:Do your homework
Argument I:If you do your homework you will be smarter.(General Statement)Support to Argument I:
Argument II:If you do your homework you will get a better job.(General Statement)Support to Argument II:
Counter Argument:(see above)
Practical Steps: Now that you know how doing homework will help you in life, you may ask yourself how do I do it?1)Set a daily schedule.Make a set time everynight for at least 3 hrs for study.2)Get a course curriculum from a teacher at the beginning of classes. For each chapter, Preview.Study.Review.------------------
Of course. My examples are short. In your actual speech you will have to be more detailed.Hope this helps.Cheers,Arthur
