2.我對(duì)戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)題材一向持規(guī)避態(tài)度，我受不了那種血腥、殘忍、骯臟，我厭惡戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)，厭惡這種野蠻而暴虐的爭(zhēng)端解決方式，我很少看戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)題材的電影，也不愛(ài)讀戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)小說(shuō)，英文書讀后感。但《The Things They Carried》第一句就吸引了我。中尉吉米一直帶著他所暗戀的女孩，家鄉(xiāng)新澤西州塞巴斯蒂安山大學(xué)三年級(jí)學(xué)生瑪莎的信。他希望這些信能是情書，但可惜它們只是朋友間的普通書信。盡管如此，他還是把信小心翼翼的折好，放進(jìn)塑料袋，藏在行軍囊的最下面。一天的行軍完畢將近黃昏時(shí)，他挖好戰(zhàn)壕，用行軍壺里的水洗凈手，便會(huì)把信取出來(lái)，用指尖輕輕捏住，借著最后一小時(shí)的天光，思念瑪莎。Tim O’Brien的語(yǔ)言有一種游離于戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)大環(huán)境之外的迷蒙感，那些親昵而又瑣屑的小細(xì)節(jié)，讓人常常有一種云深不知身何處的錯(cuò)覺(jué)。比如瑪莎隨信寄給中尉吉米一顆在漲潮時(shí)海岸交接處撿到的小卵石作為平安符，因?yàn)槟抢铩耙磺薪粎R而又分離”;吉米在越南令人煩躁的大熱天里會(huì)把這顆小卵石唅在嘴里，用舌頭翻來(lái)翻去，感受海的咸度與濕度。吉米想專注于眼前的戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)，卻無(wú)能為力的做著虛無(wú)飄渺的白日夢(mèng)，他幻想自己光著腳，和瑪莎一起走在新澤西的海岸線上，毫無(wú)負(fù)擔(dān)。“他會(huì)感到自己升起來(lái)。陽(yáng)光與海潮，還有溫柔的風(fēng)，還有愛(ài)與輕盈，讀后感《英文書讀后感》。” 中尉吉米只是戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)的一個(gè)側(cè)面。與吉米飄渺疏離的白日夢(mèng)相穿插的，是越南戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)上美軍前線步兵裝備的詳盡描述——精確到盎司。他們依據(jù)戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)需要負(fù)重，他們根據(jù)職位和地形負(fù)重，他們根據(jù)任務(wù)負(fù)重，他們根據(jù)迷信負(fù)重。他們背著紙、筆、別針、信號(hào)彈、電線、剃刀片、煙草、蠟燭、指甲刀……他們背著越南這片土地，背著疲憊，他們背著越南的天空，還有蓋滿了他們皮靴和面孔的紅土，潮濕、雨季、真菌、腐-敗的味道。背上了，便再也拿不下來(lái)。作者Tim O’Brien在22歲的時(shí)候應(yīng)召入伍參加越戰(zhàn)，兩年的軍旅生涯是他小說(shuō)靈感的源泉。

《The Things They Carried》是他的第五部作品，在其中他試圖解釋為什么自己這么多年都一直在寫戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)小說(shuō)——他并沒(méi)有直接批評(píng)戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)，批評(píng)美國(guó)的對(duì)越政策，他的源動(dòng)力不過(guò)是“講述真實(shí)的戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)故事”，同時(shí)，“通過(guò)講故事，你使自己的經(jīng)歷客觀起來(lái)。你從你自己之中分離出來(lái)?！盩im O’Brien的戰(zhàn)友，Norman Bowker，無(wú)法在戰(zhàn)后融入正常生活，無(wú)法找到生命的意義，他給Tim O’Brien的信中寫到：“我無(wú)處可去。不僅僅是這個(gè)無(wú)聊的小鎮(zhèn)，我是說(shuō)，整體，我的人生。我覺(jué)得自己已經(jīng)死在了越南……我不知該怎么描述。Kiowa死去那天，我覺(jué)得自己也仿佛跟著他沉到了污悼之中……似乎我現(xiàn)在依然浸泡在糞坑里?！卑藗€(gè)月后，Norman Bowker在故鄉(xiāng)小鎮(zhèn)體育館的更-衣室里結(jié)束了自己的生命，沒(méi)有任何遺言。Tim O’Brien在這本小說(shuō)中采取了虛實(shí)結(jié)合的寫作手法。前一章剛剛詳盡描述完一個(gè)人物，一段戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)中的恐怖經(jīng)歷，后一章卻又推翻剛才的描述，坦誠(chéng)均是虛構(gòu)。這樣的安排并不是為了迷惑讀者，而澄清也絕非交代。Tim O’Brien在“怎樣講述一個(gè)真實(shí)的戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)故事”中說(shuō)，一個(gè)真實(shí)的戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)故事從來(lái)都跟道德無(wú)關(guān)，真實(shí)的發(fā)生和印象中的真實(shí)發(fā)生其實(shí)很難區(qū)分，無(wú)論如何，一個(gè)真實(shí)的戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)故事永遠(yuǎn)無(wú)法叫人信服。在“好體裁”一章中，他進(jìn)一步提出了“故事真實(shí)”與“發(fā)生真實(shí)”的區(qū)分。作為作者，他想要讀者感受到他曾經(jīng)真切感受到的震驚、沮喪、負(fù)罪、恐懼等等情感——這一切都是“發(fā)生真實(shí)”的;然而戲劇化了的“故事真實(shí)”卻最能夠?qū)⑦@些情感情緒具象化，直接化。從這個(gè)角度來(lái)看，“故事真實(shí)”與“發(fā)生真實(shí)”在情感上都是切實(shí)的，故事的虛構(gòu)只是表達(dá)手法上的變化，為的是更準(zhǔn)確而直接的傳達(dá)強(qiáng)烈的情緒。如此安排的小說(shuō)，跳躍性非常大，如同散文;但不管哪一章，不管是描述戰(zhàn)前，戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)中，還是戰(zhàn)后，內(nèi)容都離不開“負(fù)重”這個(gè)大主題。情感最為強(qiáng)烈的一章是Tim O’Brien描述他接到入伍詔書試圖逃離去加拿大的情形。21歲的青年，剛剛從大學(xué)畢業(yè)，在社會(huì)反戰(zhàn)大潮中模糊的憎恨著戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)，還以為有大把的青春可以揮霍，還以為戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)政治都與自己無(wú)關(guān)，一紙?jiān)t書卻讓他憤怒，顫栗，無(wú)比的害怕死亡。精神的重迫終于在一個(gè)早晨把他壓垮，他“感到胸口里什么東西破裂了”，是“物理的破裂——那種破開—滲漏—碎裂的過(guò)程”。

“我胸口里還有那種滲漏的感覺(jué)，一種溫暖而又珍貴的東西流了出來(lái)……很長(zhǎng)時(shí)間我只能專注于讓自己不要垮掉?！边@樣的句子，加之他所描述的屠宰場(chǎng)，血霧，腥臭，讀來(lái)直叫人觸目驚心。但這還不是情感最強(qiáng)烈的端口。他在達(dá)到美加邊境后，在船上抉擇自己是否要跳船游到加拿大逃避兵役，平靜的湖面，舒緩的風(fēng)，安靜的對(duì)岸樹叢，對(duì)比著他胸中翻江倒海的情緒，家鄉(xiāng)的小鎮(zhèn)、親朋、同學(xué)，大體育場(chǎng)里賽場(chǎng)上的燈光，熱狗與爆米花的香氣，人聲，戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)電影，槍崩掉的手指頭，眼睛被打成星狀黑洞死在地上的越南民兵。
