side, or that in Italy and some Latin-American countries, curling the finger to oneself is a sign of farewell. Those private citizens who sent packages to our troops occupying Germany after World War II and marked them GIFT to escape duty payments did not bother to find out that “Gift” means poison in German. Moreover, we like to think of ourselves as friendly, yet we prefer to be at least 3 feet or an arm's length away form others.Latins and Middle Easterners like to come closer and touch, which makes Americans uncomfortable. Our linguistic(語言上的)and cultural blindness and the casualness with which we take notice of the developed tastes, gestures, customs and languages of other countries, are losing us friends, business and respect in the world.Even here in the United States, we make few concessions to the needs of foreign visitors. There are no information signs in four languages on our public buildings or monuments;we do not have multilingual(多語的)guided tours.Very few restaurant menus have translations, and multilingual waiters, bank clerks and policemen are rare. Our transportation systems have maps in English only and often we ourselves have difficulty understanding them. When we go abroad, we tend to cluster in hotels and restaurants where English is spoken. The attitudes and information we pick up are conditioned by those natives-usually the richer-who speak English. Our business dealings, as well as the nation's diplomacy, are conducted through interpreters. For many years, America and Americans could get by with cultural blindness and linguistic ignorance. After all, America was the most powerful country of the free world, the distributor of needed funds and goods. But all that is past.American dollars no longer buy all good things, and we are slowly beginning to realize that our proper role in the world is changing.A 1979 Harris poll reported that 55 percent of Americans want this country to play a more significant role in world affairs;we want to have a hand in the important decisions of the next century, even though it may not always be the upper hand.26.What makes women blind to the deceptive nature of high heels? A)The multi-functional use of high heels.B)Their attempt to show off their status.C)The rich variety of high heel styles.D)Their wish to improve their appearance.注:B選項(xiàng)show off炫耀,C是迷惑選項(xiàng)。

29.The author's chief argument against high heels is that ____________.A)they pose a threat to lawns B)they are injurious to women's health C)they don't necessarily make women beautiful D)they are ineffective as a weapon of defense
30.It can be inferred from the passage that women should _______________.A)see through the very nature of fashion myths B)boycott the products of the fashion industry C)go to a podiatrist regularly for advice D)avoid following fashion too closely
In department stores and closets all over the world, they are waiting.Their outward appearance seems rather appealing because they come in a variety of styles, textures, and colors. But they are ultimately the biggest deception that exists in the fashion industry today. What are they? They are high heels-a woman's worst enemy(whether she knows it or not).High heel shoes are the downfall of modern society.Fashion myths have led women to believe that they are more beautiful or sophisticated for wearing heels, but in reality, heels succeed in posing short as well as long term hardships.Women should fight the high heel industry by refusing to use or purchase them in order to save the world from unnecessary physical and psychological suffering. For the sake of fairness, it must be noted that there is a positive side to high heels.First, heels are excellent for aerating(使通氣)lawns.Anyone who has ever worn heels on grass knows what I am talking about.A simple trip around the yard in a pair of those babies eliminates all need to call for a lawn care specialist, and provides the perfect-sized holes to give any lawn oxygen without all those messy chunks of dirt lying around.Second, heels are quite functional for defense against oncoming enemies, who can easily be scared away by threatening them with a pair of these sharp, deadly fashion accessories.Regardless of such practical uses for heels, the fact remains that wearing high heels is harmful to one's physical health.Talk to any podiatrist(足病醫(yī)生), and you will hear that the majority of their business comes from high-heel-wearing women.High heels are known to cause problems such as deformed feet and torn toenails. The risk of severe back problems and twisted or broken ankles is three times higher for a high heel wearer than for a flat shoe wearer.Wearing heels also creates the threat of getting 在線學(xué)英語 體驗(yàn)請(qǐng)申請(qǐng):

35.About the future of the arts of reading the author feels ____________.A)upset B)uncertain C)alarmed D)pessimistic 注:對(duì)應(yīng)最后一段
It is hardly necessary for me to cite all the evidence of the depressing state of literacy. These figures from the Department of Education are sufficient: 27 million Americans cannot read at all, and a further 35 million read at a level that is less than sufficient to survive in our society. But my own worry today is less that of the overwhelming problem of elemental literacy than it is of the slightly more luxurious problem of the decline in the skill 在線學(xué)英語 體驗(yàn)請(qǐng)申請(qǐng):
even of he middle-class reader, of his unwillingness to afford those spaces of silence, those luxuries of domesticity and time and concentration, that surround the image of the classic act of reading.it has been suggested that almost 80 percent of America's literate, educated teenagers can no longer read without an accompanying noise(music)in the background or a television screen flickering(閃爍)at the corner of their field of perception. We know very little about the brain and how it deals with simultaneous conflicting input, but every common-sense intuition suggests we should be profoundly alarmed. This violation of concentration, silence, solitude(獨(dú)處的狀態(tài))goes to the very heart of our notion of literacy;this new form of part-reading, of part-perception against background distraction, renders impossible certain essential acts of apprehension and concentration, let alone that most important tribute any human being can pay to a poem or a piece of prose he or she really loves, which is to learn it by heart. Not by brain, by heart;the expression is vital.Under these circumstances, the question of what future there is for the arts of reading is a real one.Ahead of us lie technical, psychic(心理的), and social transformations probably much more dramatic than those brought about by Gutenberg, the German inventor in printing. The Gutenberg revolution, as we now know it, took a long time;its effects are still begin debated. The information revolution will touch every facet of composition, publication, distribution, and reading. No one in the book industry can say with any confidence what will happen to the book as we've known it.36.According to the passage, the chief purpose of explorers in going to unknown places in the past was ______________.A)to display their country's military might B)to accomplish some significant science C)to find new areas for colonization D)to pursue commercial and state interests 注:對(duì)應(yīng)文章第一段

A)To find out if life ever existed there.B)To see if humans could survive there.C)To prove the feasibility of large-scale space ventures.D)To show the leading role of science in space exploration.39.By saying “With Mars the scientific stakes are arguably higher than they have ever been”(Line 1, Para.4), the author means that _________________.
A)with Mars the risks involved are much greater than any previous space ventures B)in the case of Mars, the rewards of scientific exploration can be very high C)in the case of Mars, much more research funds are needed than ever before D)with Mars, scientists argue, the fundamental interests of science are at issue 注:爭議太多,對(duì)應(yīng)末段
40.The passage tells us that proof of life on Mars would _______________.A)make clear the complex chemistry in the development of life B)confirm the suggestion that bacterial fossils traveled to Earth on a meteorite C)reveal the kind of conditions under which lie originates D)provide an explanation why life is common in the universe
For centuries, explorers have risked their lives venturing into the unknown for reasons that were to varying degrees economic and nationalistic.Columbus went west to look for better trade routes to the Orient and to promote the greater glory of Spain.Lewis and Clark journeyed into the American wilderness to find out what the U.S.had acquired when it purchased Louisiana, and the Appolo astronauts rocketed to the moon in a dramatic show of technological muscle during the cold war.Although their missions blended commercial and political-military imperatives, the explorers involved all accomplished some significant science simply by going where no scientists had gone before.Today Mars looms(隱約出現(xiàn))as humanity's next great terra incognita(未探明之地).And with doubtful prospects for a short-term financial return, with the cold war a rapidly fading memory and amid a growing emphasis on international cooperation in large space ventures, it is clear that imperatives other than profits or nationalism will have to compel human beings to leave their tracks on the planet's reddish surface.Could it be that science, which has long played a minor role in exploration, is at last destined to take a leading role? The question naturally invites a couple of others: Are there experiments that only humans could do on Mars? Could those experiments provide insights profound enough to justify the expense of sending people across interplanetary space? With Mars the scientific stakes are arguably higher than they have ever been. The issue of whether life ever existed on the planet, and whether it persists to this day, has been highlighted by mounting evidence that the Red Planet once had abundant stable, liquid water and by the continuing controversy over suggestions that bacterial fossils rode to Earth on a meteorite(隕石)from valuable data about the range of conditions under which a planet can generate the complex chemistry that leads to life.If it could be established that life arose independently on Mars and Earth, the finding would provide the first concrete clues in one of the deepest mysteries in all of science: the prevalence of life in the universe.“成千上萬人瘋狂下載。。。

The volunteering spirit has spread among the Chinese people in recent years, especially among young people.Volunteering is of tremendous benefits to both those in need and society Take the Wenchuan Earthquake as an example.Hundreds of thousands of volunteers play an active role in Wenchuan quake-hit areas. And they contribute daily necessaries, offer medical help and psychological help to the disaster-relief work.Besides, volunteering would be beneficial to the volunteers themselves.Getting involved in
volunteering, volunteers will be exposed to a new environment, and they can learn how to work well in a team, how to improve their interpersonal skills and organizational skills, all of which are critical for their professional growth. As a college student, I sincerely hope that everyone would join the volunteering work.It is not only good to our society, but also a chance for us to grow and to learn.1.

On Job-hunting Priorities
When a graduate hunts for a job, he has to take the priority issue of a few significant factors into consideration, such as the pay, the specific field, and the location.Graduates give priority to different elements. Some graduates think the pay should take the first place, since they have been spending the money of the family all the time, and it’s time to do something as the reward to other family members.Besides, a high pay usually means a relatively high position in the company. Some would their major as the No.1 element, or it would be a big waste of what they have learned in college.Meanwhile, the major chosen for college most of the time reflects their interest and preference.Still others offer the pride of place to the location of the job. They believe big cities like Beijing or Shanghai will provide more opportunities, or a place close to hometown will furnish more convenience between the graduate and his family since most families now have one child only.As to me ,the ideal is the three elements combined together. But when I have to take a choice, l would pick up the best choice close to my family since “ East, west, home is the best”

Vocational education or college education ?
The number of people who take the college entrance examination has been decreasing these years. Some people consider vocational education an advantage to job-hunting, while others argue that a college diploma is more important.ln my opinion, college education is more advisable or most people.[4lFirst, college education is systematic and students can learn a lot in many aspects.Unlike vocational, which always focuses on
just one job skill, college education enables students to develop different po-tentials.15lSecond, to obtain a higher degree, such as a master’s degree, one has to go through college education to a bachelor’s degree first. In a society where any job skill may become outdate-ed quickly with the appearance of new technologies, the limitations of vocational education prove even more serious.Only college education can prepare us for future challenges.
Dear meimei,I have learned that your GRE score you got this time is not high enough to support your applying for the oversea study in the U.S..I am sorry to hear that.I think there are some reasons that result in this failure.First, I am informed that you were sick on the day of exam, which might badly affect your test.Second, arriving at the examination room a little bit late causes that you had 15 minutes less than other examinees andcould not finish the whole paper.Third, being sick and being late for the exam, you were in such a bad mood that you could not be concentrative enough to handle your exam, I argue. When you are going to take the next exam, don’t stay up too late to study.Sleeping enough is vital for you to keep an ideal state, with which you can pass your exam easily. What’s more, don’t be too frustrated; You should never give up since it’s your dream to do further study in the U.S..and then come back to do more contribution to our nation.

Nowadays, it has become a common in colleges for students to grade teachers as for teachers to grade students. In some universities students’ rating has even become the only source of information on teaching performance.People, however, have formed a different picture of it.Some are in favor of the rating system, arguingstudents should have their opinion about their teachers’ effectiveness.Others, on the contrary, are strongly against it.They believe that there is much more to teaching than what is shown on students’ rating forms.Students should not be expected to judge whether the materials they use are up to date or how well the teacher knows about the subject. These judgments require professional knowledge, which is best left for the teachers’ colleagues.I think students’ rating of their teachers is necessary, but it should be conducted in a way that can really shed meaningful light on teachers’ performance.Instead of rating the teachers’
knowledge on the subject, students should be asked to estimate what they have learned in a course, and to report on such things as a teacher’s ability to communicate with students, his or her relationship with students, and his or her ability to arouse students’ interest in the subject.Public morals
Nowadays, many young people focus on leading their own happy and content lives, ignoring what happens to the society and people’s livelihood. Some people think that it’s ok for ordinary people, while others don’t agree. In my opinion, we should be aware of the importance of social responsibility. What happens to the society and people’s livelihood actually affects our lives a lot.For example, when a serious earthquake happens in an area, people living in this area are all affected. They need a lot of help from the government and other people. If we{5Jturn a blind eye to these people’s livelihood, turn a blind eye to these people’s livelihood, thinking that it has nothing to do with our happy lives, these stricken people will have to flee their hometown and go to other cities, and eventually cause instability in our country and affect everyone’s life.Since we are social beings, what happens in our society will certainly affect our lives. Therefore;we should take our social responsibilities.

This may come as a surprise, but you need stress in your life.Leading stress management experts say that life without stress would be dull and unexciting.Stress adds flavor, challenge, and opportunity to life. However, too much stress can seriously affect your physical and mental well-being.A major challenge in today's stress-filled world is to make the stress in your life work for you instead of against you.In today's hectic, fast-paced world and with the booming economy, stress is our constant companion. It comes from mental or emotional activity and physical activity.Too much emotional stress can result in physical illness, such as high blood pressure, ulcers, asthma, irritable colon, headaches, or even heart disease. On the other hand, physical stress from work or exercise rarely causes such ailments. In fact, physical exercise can help you to relax and to handle your mental or emotional stress.Hans Selye, M.D., a recognized expert in the field, has defined stress as a “nonspecific response of the body to a demand”.The key to reducing stress is learning how our bodies respond to those demands. When stress becomes prolonged or particularly frustrating, it can become harmful-causing distress or “bad stress”.Recognizing the early signs of distress and then doing something about them can make a significant difference in the quality of your life.YouTheme
In order to use stress in a positive way and prevent it from becoming distress, you should be aware of your own reactions to stressful events. The body responds to stress by going through specific stages:(1)alarm,(2)resistance, and(3)exhaustion.Muscles tense, blood pressure and heart rate rise, and adrenaline and other stress-triggered hormones that increase the level of alertness are released. If the stress-causing conditions continue, your body will need time to make repairs, if that happens, you eventually may develop a physical problem that is related to stress, such as migraine headaches, high blood pressure, backaches, or insomnia. That's why when stress occurs it's important that you recognize and deal with it in a positive way. While it's impossible to live completely free of stress and distress, it is possible to prevent some distress as well as to minimize its impact when it can't be avoided. The U.S.Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to handle stress.Try Physical Activity
When you're nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity.Running, walking, playing tennis, or working in your garden are 在線學(xué)英語 體驗(yàn)請(qǐng)申請(qǐng):
just some of the activities you might try.Physical exercise will relieve your anxiety and worry and help you relax.Your body and your mind will work together to ease the stress in your life.Share Your Stress
It helps to talk with someone about your anxieties and worries.Perhaps a friend, family member, teacher, or counselor can help you achieve a more positive perspective on what's troubling you.If you feel your problem is serious, you might seek professional help from a psychologist, psychiatrist or social worker.Knowing when to ask for help is a positive step in avoiding more serious problems later.Take Care of Yourself
You should make every effort to eat well and to get enough rest.If you're irritable and tense from lack of sleep, or if you're not eating properly, you'll be more vulnerable to stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult your doctor.Make Time for Yourself Schedule time for both work and recreation.Don't forget, play can be just as important to your overall well-being as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun.Go window-shopping or work on a hobby.Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.Make a List of the Things You Need to Do
Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that “there's so much to do, and not enough time”.Trying to take care of everything at once can be overwhelming, and as a result, you may not accomplish anything.Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then do one thing at a time, checking off each task as it is completed.Give priority to the most important tasks and do those first.Go Ahead and Cry
A good cry can be a healthy way to bring relief to your anxiety. It might even help yon avoid a headache or other physical consequence of anxiety and stress.Create a Quiet Scene
Yon can't always run away, but you can allow yourself a mental “get-away”.A quiet country scene painted mentally, or on canvas, can transport you from the tension of a stressful situation to a more relaxing frame of mind. You also can create a sense of peace and tranquility by reading a good book or listening to beautiful music.Avoid Self-Medication
While yon can use prescription or over-the-counter medications to relieve stress temporarily, they do not remove the conditions that caused the stress in the first place. In fact, many medications may be habit-forming and also may reduce your efficiency, thus creating more stress than they eliminate. They should be taken only on the advice of your doctor.
Relax
The best strategy for reducing or avoiding stress altogether is to learn how to relax.Unfortunately, many people try to relax at the same pace that they lead the rest of their lives. That doesn't work.Instead, try tuning out your worries about time, productivity and “doing right”.Here are several relaxation techniques you may find 在線學(xué)英語 體驗(yàn)請(qǐng)申請(qǐng):
helpful:
-You should take a deep breath and exhale to help calm your mind, counter your body's natural stress reaction and improve your response.-You should laugh. Many stress management experts advocate laughter as a relaxation technique for relieving tension.-You should take a warm bath or shower.Whether you prefer bubble baths or long hot showers, this is an excellent way to relax after a stressful day.-You should try progressive muscle relaxation.Individual contract and relax each muscle group of your body.Begin by tensing your toes for 10 seconds, then relax them for 20.Work all the way up your body, alternately tensing and relaxing, and finish with your facial muscles.By learning the “art” of relaxation, you'll find satisfaction in just “being”, without trying or striving.Your focus on relaxation, enjoyment and health will reduce stress, anxiety and worry in your life. The result is, you will be calmer, healthier and happier.
