Life is change, and the past doesn't equal the future.Your reality today is the result of your past beliefs and actions.Change your beliefs and actions and you change your future.If you think you can or you can't, you're right.You are what you think.Think about that the next time you need an excuse.有些人是陪伴著借口度過(guò)一生的。

I’ve only been freelancing for two years, not at all as long as many others out there.However, I recognize that true freelancers–those who do so by choice and not by circumstance–have a different way of thinking.In this post, I describe the five characteristics that make up the freelancing mindset.1.Independence Freelancers crave independence… from bosses and employers, from ―the establishment,‖ from structures and hierarchies imposed upon them by somebody else.Sure, we work for clients.In a way, they’re our bosses, because we have to meet their requirements and satisfy their expectations.Unlike bosses, clients can be chosen or rejected.We can sever relationships with a client if things aren’t working out, or if we don’t like how they’re treating us.This isn’t very easy for somebody who’s an employee.Quitting your job is not something an employee can do lightly, unless you have a lot of money stashed in the bank, or a job offer waiting in the background.Freelancers are willing to self-direct, to self-manage, and to be our own bosses–including all the responsibilities this entails.2.Adventure

The freelancing mindset is one that is open to new experiences and challenges, and is always looking for adventure.In contrast, an employee mindset wants predictability and routine.Don’t get me wrong.I’m a stickler for routine, and if I veer away from it, my productivity suffers.Yet in spite of my daily routine, I’m always working on new projects, learning about new things, meeting new clients and prospects, developing new skills, and redesigning my business.For other freelancers, part of the adventure is working in your home office one day and in a coffee shop the next.Or, working while traveling the world.Our lives are like a create-your-own-adventure book.3.Risk

True freelancers are not averse to risk.With our independence comes more responsibility, more accountability for our lives.Not having a fixed income every month, for example, is part of the risk.The risk may scare us, but it doesn’t stop us.It’s also part of the adventure.This uncertainty is more than others can bear.If I were the sole breadwinner of my family, I’m not sure I could put up with this myself.(In fact, the reason I took so long to finally plunge in my dream to be self-employed was because I wanted to make sure that my family wouldn’t go hungry if I failed.)

4.Creativity

Freelancers tend to be creative people.I say this not just because a lot of us are writers and artists and photographers.Programmers, virtual assistants and other service providers are creative in their everyday lives as well.Our work are forms of self-expression.Our daily lives are a reflection of what we believe in and stand for.We’re creative in the way we handle the daily problems and challenges of freelancing.We don’t rely on others for solutions.5.Idealism

Finally, the freelancing mindset is characterized by idealism.This is what makes some of us stick through the hardships, failures and pitfalls of freelancing.We believe in a ―better world,‖ where one doesn’t have to fit a mold to succeed in life.We believe that fancy titles are meaningless(and if not, we can give ourselves a fancy title anytime we wanted to).We believe in the freelancing lifestyle, and we’re committed to make it work.We believe we can be happy, even prosperous and downright wealthy, doing what we love.In Conclusion

Freelancing is all about the desire for more freedom and all that it entails.This freedom means we’re solely accountable for our own success or failure, for our happiness or misery, for our wealth or poverty.There are no bosses, no backstabbing co-workers, no unfair HR policies to blame.Unless you embrace this, then freelancing will suck.If you don’t believe this in your heart, then you will resent the work it takes to find clients.You’ll hate not having a regular paycheck and paid sick and vacation days.You’ll reject having to work long hours occasionally(am I the only one who worked longer hours while employed?).Some freelancers have a freelancing work arrangement, but they’re employees at heart.They’re the ones who will jump the freelancing ship at the first opportunity of a good job.I’m not saying that’s right or wrong.After all, freelancing isn’t for everyone.【參考譯文】

我以自由職業(yè)者的方式工作，只有兩年的時(shí)間，不象其它人那么久。然而，我已經(jīng)認(rèn)識(shí)到，有些人是真正的自由職業(yè)者：他們是自愿選成為自由職業(yè)者，而不是因?yàn)榫秤鏊?。這些人有著完全不同的思維模式。

這篇博文中，我來(lái)探討一下構(gòu)成自由職業(yè)觀念的五種特征。

1.獨(dú)立自主

自由職業(yè)者渴望獨(dú)立......不受老板或雇主的左右，或任何由其它人強(qiáng)加于他們身上的東西：包括現(xiàn)有的管理架構(gòu)，等級(jí)制度或機(jī)構(gòu)體系。的確，我們?yōu)榭蛻舳ぷ?。在某種意義上，他們就是我們的老板，我們必須滿足他們的要求，滿足他們的期望。不同的是，你可選擇或拒絕自己的客戶。如果事情進(jìn)展的不順利，或者我們不喜歡客戶對(duì)待我們的態(tài)度，我們可以搞砸與他的關(guān)系。

如果你是一個(gè)雇員，就很難這樣做。放棄工作并不是一個(gè)雇員隨便就能做到的，除非你已經(jīng)在銀行有不少的存款，或者說(shuō)有一份新的工作在等著你。

自由職業(yè)者希望能夠自主選擇自己未來(lái)的方向，并自我管理，成為自己的老板，并承擔(dān)與之相應(yīng)的責(zé)任。

2.冒險(xiǎn)精神

自由職業(yè)是一種敢于面對(duì)全新體驗(yàn)和挑戰(zhàn)的，并且不斷尋求冒險(xiǎn)的觀念。與之相反，雇員們希望自己走上的，是一條可以預(yù)見(jiàn)到未來(lái)的路途。

不要誤解我，我也是一個(gè)循規(guī)蹈矩的人。一旦我偏離了這一方式，工作的效率就會(huì)大大降低。

然而，除于每天的事務(wù)性工作，我還在不斷接受新的項(xiàng)目，學(xué)習(xí)新東西，約見(jiàn)新客戶和潛在客戶，掌握新的技能，并重新設(shè)計(jì)我的業(yè)務(wù)。

對(duì)其它自由職業(yè)者而言，其中的一項(xiàng)體驗(yàn)就是今天在家辦公，明天可能在隔壁的咖啡館里。也可能你一邊周游世界，一邊工作賺錢(qián)。我們的生活，就象一本叫做《創(chuàng)造你的歷險(xiǎn)記》的書(shū)。

3.風(fēng)險(xiǎn)

自由職業(yè)者并不反對(duì)風(fēng)險(xiǎn)。與我們的獨(dú)立性與生俱來(lái)的，就是責(zé)任心，以及對(duì)自己生活的把握。每月沒(méi)有固定的工資，就是其中的風(fēng)險(xiǎn)之一。這種風(fēng)險(xiǎn)可能會(huì)讓我們感到恐懼，但不會(huì)阻止我們。這是我們冒險(xiǎn)經(jīng)歷中的一部分。

這種不確定性，超出其它人的承受限度。如果我是家庭中唯一的生活支柱，我不確定自己是否能夠做出這種選擇。（事實(shí)由，我之所以花了這么久，才從事自己夢(mèng)想中的自由職業(yè)，就是因?yàn)橄胍_保我的家庭不會(huì)因?yàn)槲业氖《ゐI。）4.創(chuàng)造力

自己職業(yè)者往往具有創(chuàng)造力。我之所以這樣說(shuō)，不僅因?yàn)槲覀冎械脑S多人是作家、藝術(shù)家、攝影師，程序員、虛擬助理或其它服務(wù)供應(yīng)商在他們每天的生活中，也是極具創(chuàng)造力的。

我們的工作，就是自我的表現(xiàn)形式。我們每天的生活，是我們信仰和選擇的反映。我們?cè)谔幚砼c自由職業(yè)有關(guān)的日常問(wèn)題和挑戰(zhàn)時(shí)，極具創(chuàng)造力。我們不會(huì)依賴(lài)別人給我們提供解決方案。5.理想主義

最后，自由職業(yè)的觀念體現(xiàn)了一種理想主義。正是這一點(diǎn)，幫助我們渡過(guò)了自由職業(yè)生涯中的困難、失敗和陷阱。

我們相信有一個(gè)―更好的世界‖，在那里，人們不需要按照設(shè)計(jì)好的模子來(lái)生活，以獲得成功。我們相信那些花里忽哨的頭銜其實(shí)毫無(wú)意義（否則的話，我們可以隨時(shí)給自己一個(gè)這樣的頭銜，只要自己愿意就行）。我們相信自由職業(yè)者的生活方式，也盡力讓這種方式成功。

我們相信自己會(huì)幸福、繁榮和真正的富足，僅靠著從事自己喜歡的事業(yè)。

結(jié)論

自由職業(yè)的全部，就是對(duì)自由，以及自由所賴(lài)以生存的基礎(chǔ)的一種渴望。這種自由意味著，我們必須為自己的成功或失敗、快樂(lè)或不幸、富有或貧窮承擔(dān)全部責(zé)任。

沒(méi)有老板，不能暗算自己的同事，沒(méi)有不公平的人事制度可以遷怒。除非你真的喜歡自由職業(yè)，否則，你可能會(huì)感到非常糟糕。

如果你不是打心眼里相信這些，那么你會(huì)憎恨尋找客戶所需要的大量工作。你會(huì)對(duì)沒(méi)有定期工資、帶薪病假和年假感到不快。你會(huì)對(duì)經(jīng)常性的長(zhǎng)時(shí)間工作充滿抵觸（在從事全職工作時(shí)，難道只有我一個(gè)人長(zhǎng)時(shí)間地工作嗎？）。

有些自由職業(yè)者，雖然擁有自由職業(yè)者的日程安排，卻在本質(zhì)上停留于雇員的心態(tài)。他們一有好的工作機(jī)會(huì)，就會(huì)跳下自由職業(yè)之船。我并不是說(shuō)，這種做法是對(duì)是錯(cuò)。畢竟，自由職業(yè)并不適合所有的人。
