Unit 1PA牛津大學(xué)
牛津大學(xué)是英國(guó)最古老的大學(xué),也是世界最著名的高等學(xué)府。牛津大學(xué)始建于12世紀(jì)。它位于英格蘭的牛津,在倫敦西北約80公里處。
牛津大學(xué)有16,300多名學(xué)生(1999-2000),其中留學(xué)生占將近四分之一。他們來(lái)自130多個(gè)國(guó)家。牛津大學(xué)有35個(gè)學(xué)院,還有5個(gè)由不同宗教團(tuán)體建立的私人學(xué)院。5個(gè)私人學(xué)院中,有3個(gè)只招男生。學(xué)院中,圣希爾達(dá)和薩默維爾學(xué)院只收女生,其他均為男女兼收。
牛津的每個(gè)學(xué)院都是獨(dú)立于大學(xué)的實(shí)體,由該學(xué)院的院長(zhǎng)和管委會(huì)成員負(fù)責(zé)管理。部分管委會(huì)成員都稱為導(dǎo)師的學(xué)院教師,其余的是大學(xué)教授和講師。每個(gè)學(xué)院管理自己的房產(chǎn)和資產(chǎn),遴選自己的管委會(huì),選擇和招收自己的本科生。大學(xué)提供某些圖書(shū)館、實(shí)驗(yàn)室和其他設(shè)施,但教學(xué)和學(xué)生生活主要由各學(xué)院負(fù)責(zé)。
牛津大學(xué)給每個(gè)學(xué)生指定一個(gè)導(dǎo)師,他主要通過(guò)輔導(dǎo)課監(jiān)督學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)。導(dǎo)師每周和1到2名學(xué)生見(jiàn)面一次,學(xué)生如需專業(yè)指導(dǎo),還可以去約見(jiàn)其他的導(dǎo)師,也可選聽(tīng)大學(xué)老師講授的課程。學(xué)生選聽(tīng)什么課程是根據(jù)自己的興趣和導(dǎo)師的建議而定的。
學(xué)位由大學(xué)授予,而不是各個(gè)學(xué)院。最低文科或理科學(xué)位是優(yōu)等文學(xué)學(xué)士。牛津還在其他眾多學(xué)科領(lǐng)域授予最高的學(xué)位,頒發(fā)文憑和證書(shū)。
羅茲德獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金面向美國(guó)、加拿大和很多其他國(guó)家的學(xué)生,為他們提供至少兩年的牛津?qū)W習(xí)費(fèi)用。英國(guó)政府為在牛津和其他英國(guó)境內(nèi)的大學(xué)里求學(xué)的美國(guó)公民提供“馬歇爾獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金”。
然而,獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金和助學(xué)金的競(jìng)爭(zhēng)極其激烈,而且通常要求很嚴(yán)。學(xué)生們?cè)谏暾?qǐng)某一項(xiàng)獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金之前應(yīng)仔細(xì)核查是否有資格,因?yàn)槎鄶?shù)獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金對(duì)學(xué)生國(guó)籍和(或)課程都有限制。
牛津師生員工積極參與主動(dòng)招生的活動(dòng),2001年這種活動(dòng)有55項(xiàng)以上,包括走訪3,700所中學(xué),以鼓勵(lì)優(yōu)秀學(xué)生報(bào)考牛津大學(xué),而不管其背景如何。
在2001年度的“創(chuàng)新”競(jìng)賽中,牛津大學(xué)被授予英國(guó)最具創(chuàng)新精神的大學(xué)稱號(hào)。該競(jìng)賽旨在發(fā)現(xiàn)哪一所英國(guó)大學(xué)在最廣的領(lǐng)域內(nèi)取得了創(chuàng)新和進(jìn)取的最大成就。在2000年全英教學(xué)質(zhì)量評(píng)估中,牛津在所評(píng)估的10個(gè)科目中有6科得分高居榜首。
牛津、斯坦福和耶魯三所大學(xué)最近合作開(kāi)發(fā)了 “遠(yuǎn)程學(xué)習(xí)”項(xiàng)目“終生學(xué)習(xí)聯(lián)盟”,該項(xiàng)目將提供文科和理科的在線課程。

各位家長(zhǎng),2005屆的同學(xué)們:
下午好!歡迎各位來(lái)到斯坦福大學(xué)。今天,我們?cè)诖藲g迎1717名新生和轉(zhuǎn)學(xué)生的到來(lái)。
過(guò)去的10天,我一直頗費(fèi)心思,不知這個(gè)開(kāi)學(xué)典禮該用什么形式,我的發(fā)言要講什么內(nèi)容。9月11日上午以來(lái),校園里異乎尋常的安靜。除了兩個(gè)紀(jì)念性的活動(dòng)以外,所有的大型活動(dòng)都取消了。我們?cè)诳紤]怎樣開(kāi)始新學(xué)年,后來(lái)發(fā)現(xiàn)開(kāi)學(xué)典禮實(shí)際上是恢復(fù)正常秩序的最佳方式。
同學(xué)們,你們代表了我們世界的未來(lái)與和平的最美的希望。美國(guó)人民和全世界所有善良的人們,不論長(zhǎng)幼,都會(huì)為這場(chǎng)悲劇哀悼,會(huì)將這可怕的一天永遠(yuǎn)留存在記憶中,但面臨挑戰(zhàn)的更是你們這一代,而不是我們或是你們父母這一代,你們要建設(shè)一個(gè)世界,決不容許類似慘無(wú)人道的事件再次發(fā)生。

Unit 2PA鼠標(biāo)輕點(diǎn),美夢(mèng)成真
還有不到一個(gè)月就要畢業(yè)了,特里薩·史密斯還沒(méi)找到合適的工作,她就讀于位于伊利諾州埃文斯頓的西北大學(xué)。就業(yè)指導(dǎo)中心建議這位文科生去查查JOB-TRAK網(wǎng)站,該網(wǎng)站上列出了45,000個(gè)初級(jí)水平的職位。
史密斯選擇了四個(gè)關(guān)鍵詞:Chicago(芝加哥),business(商務(wù)),marketing(營(yíng)銷),full time(全職)。她馬上就找到45個(gè)工作合乎她的標(biāo)準(zhǔn),其中一個(gè)是芝加哥商業(yè)學(xué)院行政助理。四個(gè)星期以后,她得到了這份工作,底薪32,000美元。
“我沒(méi)有受過(guò)任何訓(xùn)練,”史密斯說(shuō),“但因特網(wǎng)使用很簡(jiǎn)單。要是沒(méi)有因特網(wǎng),我根本不會(huì)知道有這份工作?!?/p>
不少美國(guó)人鼠標(biāo)一點(diǎn),就找到了自己的工作。史密斯是其中一個(gè),另一個(gè)例子是斯蒂芬·圖爾斯。
他住在馬里蘭州的羅科維爾,1996年無(wú)意中進(jìn)到一個(gè)招聘網(wǎng)站CareerBuilder。他在一家生產(chǎn)商展展品的公司工作,剛被提升為營(yíng)銷總管,并不想換工作。但是出于好奇心,他決定“試試看”。
圖爾斯填寫了一份簡(jiǎn)歷,關(guān)鍵詞是market manager(行銷經(jīng)理),并輸入了自己的電子郵箱地址。不到一個(gè)星期,他的郵箱里就塞滿了可供選擇的職位。他去了兩家公司面試,然后就跳槽了?!坝辛艘蛱鼐W(wǎng),就像雇了一個(gè)私人助理,”圖爾斯說(shuō)?!澳憧梢院敛毁M(fèi)勁地留意到一些機(jī)會(huì),讓你的事業(yè)上一個(gè)新臺(tái)階。”
僅在兩年以前,因特網(wǎng)上提供的工作絕大部分還局限于高科技領(lǐng)域?,F(xiàn)在,非技術(shù)性的工作,如售貨員、銀行職員、秘書(shū)等,是網(wǎng)上招聘機(jī)會(huì)增長(zhǎng)最為迅速的部分。大型報(bào)紙和專業(yè)出版物的分類廣告大多都有在線版,求職者能搜索到市內(nèi)、國(guó)內(nèi)甚至國(guó)外的一些工作機(jī)會(huì)。
馬德琳·格拉格和內(nèi)德扎德·多茲里克也是通過(guò)輕點(diǎn)鼠標(biāo),在網(wǎng)上碰到了好運(yùn)。
1996年,圣路易斯的一名高中老師,28歲的馬德琳·格拉格,想換個(gè)工作。有個(gè)朋友提到在日本教書(shū)的事,格拉格很感興趣。
她訪問(wèn)了著名的yahoo!網(wǎng)站,輸入了teaching English in Japan(在日本教英語(yǔ)),找到了一個(gè)招聘機(jī)會(huì)的列表,然后按照在線申請(qǐng)的要求提交了申請(qǐng)。一星期后,她接到一個(gè)電話,與芝加哥的一名招聘人員進(jìn)行了面試,得到了這份工作。
27歲的內(nèi)德扎德·多茲里克,當(dāng)時(shí)在瀏覽Houston Chronicle網(wǎng)站,了解最新的棒球消息。在線時(shí),他查看了分類廣告,發(fā)現(xiàn)一家當(dāng)?shù)氐钠嚱灰咨陶衅杆緳C(jī)。多茲里克是波斯尼亞的戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)難民,曾從事過(guò)多種不同的工作,但現(xiàn)在他想換個(gè)工作。他從該交易商的網(wǎng)站上了解了該職位的更多情況,然后撥通了上面提供的電話。兩天后,他被雇用了?!罢嬗幸馑?,”他說(shuō),“我本來(lái)只是在查看體育消息,結(jié)果卻找到了一份更好的工作?!?/p>
因特網(wǎng)的另一個(gè)好處在于你能夠搜索到一些可能的雇主。1997年夏天,溫蒂·梅洛開(kāi)始找工作,她登錄到CareerBuilder網(wǎng)站,發(fā)現(xiàn)在馬里蘭州哥倫比亞的Artitron媒體信息服務(wù)公司的人力資源部有一個(gè)空缺。梅洛鼠標(biāo)一點(diǎn),用電子郵件把簡(jiǎn)歷寄到了該公司,很快就收到面試通知。
為了了解該公司的更多情況,她又點(diǎn)擊了Artitron的主頁(yè),以及它的母公司Ceridian Corp.的主頁(yè),查看了一份該公司的年度報(bào)告及其財(cái)政狀況。
梅洛還想了解,要想維持現(xiàn)有的生活水平,自己該賺多少錢。她使用在線薪酬計(jì)算器,把自己目前的收入$34,000輸進(jìn)去,再輸入Baltimore(巴爾的摩,離哥倫比亞最近的大城市)。短短幾秒鐘后,電腦屏幕上就閃現(xiàn)出$44,000?!耙?yàn)橛辛诉@個(gè)薪酬計(jì)算器,我才知道自己該要多少薪水,”梅洛說(shuō)。
通過(guò)上網(wǎng)進(jìn)入一家在線房地產(chǎn)服務(wù)公司網(wǎng)站,梅洛看到了可供租用的房子的彩色照片,包括很詳細(xì)的樓面格局圖。梅洛來(lái)到哥倫比亞時(shí),她覺(jué)得自己完全做好了準(zhǔn)備。面試成功了,第二天,她就得到了一份工作,薪金是47,8000美元。

兩名杰出的美國(guó)人回憶他們第一份工作的經(jīng)歷 路易斯·卡爾德拉:停車場(chǎng)的清潔工
我很小的時(shí)候,我父母就給我灌輸了有關(guān)家庭、信念和愛(ài)國(guó)主義的觀念。雖說(shuō)生計(jì)艱難,他們對(duì)我和四個(gè)兄弟姐妹總是強(qiáng)調(diào),我們很幸運(yùn),生活在一個(gè)偉大的國(guó)家,有無(wú)窮無(wú)盡的機(jī)會(huì)。
我開(kāi)始做第一份正式工作時(shí),才十歲。我父親本杰明在一家紙箱工廠工作時(shí),背部受傷,此后重新接受培訓(xùn),成了一名理發(fā)師。那個(gè)購(gòu)物中心的老板免去了父親的部分租金,作為交換,父親要清掃停車場(chǎng),每星期三個(gè)晚上,這就意味著我們得凌晨三點(diǎn)起床。父親用一臺(tái)類似割草機(jī)的機(jī)器來(lái)收集垃圾,母親和我就清空垃圾箱,用手撿垃圾。清掃完停車場(chǎng)要花兩三個(gè)小時(shí)?;丶彝局?,我就在車?yán)锼恕?/p>

我第一份工作是在當(dāng)?shù)匾患医行↑S花面包房的餐廳工作,那年我22歲。我在那兒工作了七年,學(xué)到了很多東西,從工友海倫身上我學(xué)到的東西尤其多,她非常自愛(ài),做著自己熱愛(ài)的事情——為他人服務(wù)。她會(huì)讓大家都微笑并心情舒暢,顧客和工友人人如此。
服務(wù)員這個(gè)工作改變了我的一生。我認(rèn)識(shí)一個(gè)老主顧,電子產(chǎn)品銷售員弗萊德·哈斯布魯克。他總是點(diǎn)一份火腿加干酪煎蛋,我一看見(jiàn)他朝餐廳走來(lái),就盡量在他剛坐下時(shí)就把一份煎蛋放在他的桌子上。
受了海倫的激勵(lì),我重新找到了自信,夢(mèng)想開(kāi)一家自己的飯店。我打電話問(wèn)父母借錢,但他們說(shuō),“我們沒(méi)有那么一筆錢?!?/p>
第二天,弗萊德見(jiàn)到我,問(wèn)道,“怎么啦,陽(yáng)光女孩?你今天沒(méi)有笑啊。”我給他講了我的夢(mèng)想,對(duì)他說(shuō),“弗萊德,我知道我可以做得更多,只要有人相信我?!?/p>

我把支票拿到Merrill Lynch證券公司,這是我平生第一次走進(jìn)證券公司,讓他們替我投資。同時(shí),我繼續(xù)在小黃花餐廳工作,計(jì)劃著自己要開(kāi)的飯店。然而,我的投資泡了湯,血本無(wú)歸。

Unit 3PA廣告的受害者
你可以說(shuō)我是購(gòu)物狂,朋友大都這樣說(shuō)我,不過(guò)我自認(rèn)為是個(gè)時(shí)尚愛(ài)好者。坐在房間里,看著衣櫥里所有的東西,我總是在想還有什么要買的。Abercrombie, Guess, J Crew, Ralph Lauren,還有其他名牌產(chǎn)品,充斥著我的房間,但我還想要更多。我從不考慮我買的東西是否物有所值,雖然我買東西一直都很“精明”,買的都是打折的商品。然而,我對(duì)將來(lái)要從事的營(yíng)銷領(lǐng)域了解越深入,就越明白自己原來(lái)是深受廣告的左右。我想要的,我所買的,都受到雜志、電視或別的廣告商的影響,它們?cè)诟嬖V我該買些什么。

初中時(shí),像大多數(shù)女生一樣,我開(kāi)始在意自己的打扮。但從高中開(kāi)始,廣告對(duì)我產(chǎn)生了很大的影響。男生開(kāi)始留意女生,每個(gè)女生都想打扮得漂漂亮亮。高中時(shí)衣著界定你的身份,并將你歸入某一群體。穿Abercrombie牌的牛仔褲說(shuō)明你是典型的美國(guó)女生,干凈利落;穿Guess的襯衫說(shuō)明你是富家千金,自命不凡,任何其他差一些的衣服都是不可接受的。
上大學(xué)后,廣告又用另外的方式影響著我。大學(xué)里,最初通常沒(méi)有人認(rèn)識(shí)你,所以你想怎樣穿戴都行。學(xué)生很多,而且什么人都有,以穿戴看人的情況越來(lái)越少,以個(gè)性判斷人的情況越來(lái)越多。每個(gè)人都在成長(zhǎng)、改變,開(kāi)始為真正的自己定位。我和朋友們依然關(guān)注廣告,不過(guò)現(xiàn)在不只是為了緊跟時(shí)尚,更多的是想找到自己的風(fēng)格。在尋找個(gè)性的過(guò)程中,我所選擇的衣服樣式反映我,顯示我的個(gè)性,表明我是哪種類型的人。
雖然我決心讓衣服反映,而不是代表我本人,但廣告還是在左右著我。雖然我看廣告的目的是想了解最新潮流,可我還是會(huì)受到廣告的潛在信息的影響。廣告反映社會(huì),也豐富了社會(huì)的含義。廣告給我們看到的是我們身邊的人,但他們只選擇特定的類型。通過(guò)展現(xiàn)這一類人,廣告將這極少數(shù)人定義為俊男美女。廣告利用人們不甘人后的心理,慫恿我們?nèi)W(xué)這些俊男美女。我們想受人歡迎、想得到擁戴,這些心理正好被用來(lái)對(duì)付我們自己。人們向往變成別的模樣,社會(huì)又推波助瀾,廣告就利用這些來(lái)影響我們?nèi)ハ嘈拍承┬畔ⅲ阂谴┐髋c模特有差距,就不能算漂亮;要是不苗條,曲線不美,就沒(méi)有吸引力;要是其貌不揚(yáng),就算性格再好,大多數(shù)人還是不會(huì)喜歡我們。
廣告利用我們的弱點(diǎn)告訴我們什么最新潮,我們應(yīng)該是什么樣子,什么最酷,什么最熱門。我們都想受人歡迎,魅力四射,這是人性使然,所以我們會(huì)對(duì)廣告言聽(tīng)計(jì)從。這應(yīng)該怪人們相信廣告嗎?還是該怪社會(huì)縱容廣告誤導(dǎo)人?我進(jìn)入營(yíng)銷業(yè)之后,經(jīng)常考慮的就是這些問(wèn)題。利用人的不甘人后的心理來(lái)促進(jìn)消費(fèi)固然是件輕而易舉的事,但這樣做對(duì)嗎?要想找出答案,我們就得退一步,不再讀雜志,不再看電視。不然的話,我還是擺脫不了廣告的左右。別的人也是如此。
Unit 4PA夢(mèng)斷魂縈
在紐約,美國(guó)花樣滑冰隊(duì)的18名成員躊躇滿志地登上飛機(jī)。他們將飛往比利時(shí)的布魯塞爾,在那兒轉(zhuǎn)機(jī),到(前)捷克斯洛伐克去參加在布拉格舉辦的世界花樣滑冰錦標(biāo)賽。站在比利時(shí)沙比那航空公司的707噴氣機(jī)的舷梯上,全體成員合影留念。這批全美頂尖的滑冰運(yùn)動(dòng)員在照相機(jī)前笑臉盈盈,開(kāi)心地笑著,眼睛里舞動(dòng)著激動(dòng)與興奮。這將成為他們生命中珍貴的一刻。
機(jī)上有三對(duì)雙人組合,其中兩對(duì)是兄妹組合:??瓶怂剐置煤凸吕置茫硪粚?duì)是夫妻搭檔,迪寧夫婦。但眾星之中最耀眼的是一名單人滑選手。她叫勞倫斯·歐文,人稱“勞利”。年僅16歲的她,兩天前剛奪得北美花樣滑冰女子冠軍。勞利技巧嫻熟,優(yōu)雅無(wú)比,笑靨如花。
勞利出生于滑冰世家。母親瑪麗貝爾曾九次將美國(guó)花樣滑冰冠軍收入囊中。勞利還有一個(gè)姐姐,與母親同名。瑪麗貝爾·歐文20歲,實(shí)力不如勞利,但也剛剛獲得美國(guó)雙人滑大齡組的冠軍。歐文家的三員女將都在飛往布魯塞爾的航班上。
1961年2月14日下午7點(diǎn)30分,沙比那548號(hào)航班起飛了。飛越大西洋的航程是很愜意的。第二天一早,飛機(jī)飛臨布魯塞爾的機(jī)場(chǎng),沒(méi)有任何異常。駕駛飛機(jī)的路易斯·蘭布萊奇機(jī)長(zhǎng),沒(méi)有發(fā)出任何遇難信號(hào)。該地區(qū)沒(méi)有暴風(fēng)雨,也沒(méi)有大風(fēng)。事實(shí)上,天氣很好,暖和而晴朗。
但駕駛員座艙肯定出了什么差錯(cuò)。在預(yù)定著陸的最后幾分鐘內(nèi),蘭布萊奇機(jī)長(zhǎng)沒(méi)有與布魯塞爾機(jī)場(chǎng)聯(lián)系。快到上午十點(diǎn)時(shí),他放下了起落架,開(kāi)始著陸。但在最后一刻,他又把飛機(jī)機(jī)頭拉起往上攀升。也許他看見(jiàn)另一架飛機(jī)正在起飛,害怕撞機(jī)。也許他已經(jīng)知道他的飛機(jī)出了故障。不管怎么樣,他繞著機(jī)場(chǎng)飛了一圈,再次嘗試著陸。
蘭布萊奇第二次出現(xiàn)了,飛過(guò)布魯塞爾東北部的一個(gè)叫博格的村莊附近的農(nóng)場(chǎng),飛行了大約500英尺。突然他猛地提速,飛機(jī)急遽攀升。這時(shí)候,布魯塞爾控制塔的官員們知道大事不妙了?!拔覀冄郾牨牭乜粗鴳K劇發(fā)生,”有個(gè)官員說(shuō)?!八麄兊姆磻?yīng)夠快的了,可是無(wú)能為力,”他說(shuō)。
有個(gè)坐火車的人看見(jiàn)飛機(jī)出問(wèn)題了?!帮w機(jī)好像準(zhǔn)備正常著陸,突然又攀升到天空,”他說(shuō)。“然后掉了下來(lái),像塊大石頭一樣,接著我們就聽(tīng)見(jiàn)了爆炸聲。”
10點(diǎn)05分,飛機(jī)撞到地面爆炸了,燃成了一團(tuán)火球。還險(xiǎn)些就撞上一排房子。機(jī)上72人全部遇難,其中包括49名美國(guó)人和11名機(jī)組人員。人們無(wú)能為力。失事現(xiàn)場(chǎng)一片狼藉。碎片散落到200碼開(kāi)外。燒焦的殘骸以及肢體滿地都是。機(jī)上的幾對(duì)夫婦最后一次緊緊抱在一起。
這場(chǎng)空難震驚了全球滑冰界以及熱愛(ài)花樣滑冰的人們。滑冰界以前從來(lái)沒(méi)有發(fā)生過(guò)類似的慘劇。為了紀(jì)念遇難者,布拉格的冠軍賽取消了。
這次墜機(jī)對(duì)某些家庭尤其令人悲痛欲絕。歐文家三名女性全部喪生。除此之外,還有九個(gè)家庭至少痛失兩名親人。
明星們的希望和夢(mèng)想在一瞬間破滅了。救援人員仔細(xì)搜尋了遇難現(xiàn)場(chǎng),只找到三雙已經(jīng)燒焦的冰鞋,在殘留的機(jī)翼上搖曳。
Unit 4PB剎那之間
1989年5月1日,凱蒂·普里查德正在把商店里買來(lái)的一包包東西從汽車的行李箱里卸下來(lái),她的兩個(gè)兒子托德和斯科特在車道上玩得很開(kāi)心。他們住在新澤西州的拉姆齊城的一個(gè)死胡同里,所以凱蒂不用擔(dān)心孩子們會(huì)跑到街上被汽車撞倒。但她經(jīng)常警告三歲的托德,不要靠近鐵路。鐵路離房子不足300英尺,只隔著一片樹(shù)叢。
凱蒂把第一批東西放好,又返回汽車旁去取剩下的袋子,她看到兩個(gè)孩子還在玩。凱蒂也聽(tīng)到了一列客車飛馳而過(guò)的轟隆聲。然后她又抱著另外一批購(gòu)物袋走進(jìn)屋子里。
雖然母親事先警告過(guò),托德和1歲半的弟弟還是被飛速行進(jìn)的火車的汽笛聲所吸引。他們走過(guò)樹(shù)叢,跪在鐵軌上玩。另一列火車正朝他們駛過(guò)來(lái),兩個(gè)小男孩卻渾然不知。
西面一個(gè)小坡上,一列19節(jié)車廂的貨車正在慢慢地爬上斜坡。司機(jī)里奇·坎帕納看見(jiàn)正前方的信號(hào)燈顯示“無(wú)障礙”。特快客車已經(jīng)開(kāi)出很遠(yuǎn)了。因此坎帕拉拉動(dòng)調(diào)速手柄重新全速行駛。同在駕駛室里的還有老乘務(wù)員安東尼·福爾佐,他在鐵路上已經(jīng)干了17年了,這時(shí)在與坎帕拉閑聊。當(dāng)火車到達(dá)坡頂?shù)臅r(shí)候,兩人注意到在前方約800碼前方的鐵軌上有東西。是什么呢?好像是兩個(gè)包袱或是兩個(gè)箱子——一個(gè)黃的一個(gè)紅的?!叭缓簏S的動(dòng)了一下,”福爾佐說(shuō),“于是我們意識(shí)到這是兩個(gè)孩子?!?/p>
坎帕納猛地扳動(dòng)火車剎車,拉響了警報(bào)器。福爾佐馬上意識(shí)到火車速度太快,不可能適時(shí)停下來(lái)。他立刻沖出駕駛室,沖到窄窄的踏板上。他很快地朝機(jī)車的前部跑去,然后順著鋼梯爬到最后一格。他懸在火車的前面,離路基大約兩英尺。他發(fā)狂般朝孩子們揮手大喊,要他們離開(kāi)路軌。他們沒(méi)有動(dòng)。福爾佐后來(lái)說(shuō),他們只是抬頭看了看,“好像我們能繞過(guò)他們似的?!?/p>
與此同時(shí),凱蒂聽(tīng)到了警報(bào)聲,也聽(tīng)到火車緊急剎車的刺耳聲音。她往外跑去,心咚咚直跳。她一眼就看到出了什么事兒了。托德和斯科特不見(jiàn)了。她知道他們倆肯定在鐵路上。
福爾佐想過(guò)跳下火車,跑到前面去救兩個(gè)小男孩。但他知道,就算火車減速了,自己也肯定跑不過(guò)火車。所以這位35歲的前體操運(yùn)動(dòng)員想出了另外一個(gè)方案。他決定在火車靠近孩子們的時(shí)候跳下火車。這樣他就可能把兩個(gè)孩子抓起來(lái),及時(shí)把他們拖下軌道。但福爾佐得把跳車的時(shí)間計(jì)算得很精確。跳得太早,火車就會(huì)把他掀倒到孩子們身上。跳得太晚,火車就會(huì)把孩子們碾到車輪底下。
所幸福爾佐的時(shí)間可算是相當(dāng)精確。在千鈞一發(fā)之際,他跳下火車,跨了兩大步,一把抓住孩子們。他把托德和斯科特分別夾在腋下,又迅速將他們摁倒在路基的砂石里。火車經(jīng)過(guò)時(shí),其邊緣離他們的頭頂僅幾英寸。
火車終于停下來(lái)了,第三節(jié)車廂就停在他們頭頂上幾英寸的地方。孩子們安然無(wú)恙。幸運(yùn)的是,斯科特的擦傷并不嚴(yán)重??p了13針之后,他就完全沒(méi)事了。凱蒂·普里查德說(shuō),“對(duì)托尼(福爾佐)的救命之恩,我們將永遠(yuǎn)感激不盡。韋氏大字典里也找不到一個(gè)詞能表達(dá)這種感情?!?/p>
Unit 5PA奉告學(xué)子:教育是關(guān)鍵

每年都有數(shù)以百計(jì)的學(xué)生給我發(fā)電子郵件,要我就接受教育給他們提建議。他們想知道該學(xué)些什么,或者可不可以從大學(xué)輟學(xué),因?yàn)槲揖蜎](méi)有讀完大學(xué)。
也有不少家長(zhǎng)給我寫信,為子女尋求指導(dǎo)。他們問(wèn):“我們?cè)鯓硬拍馨押⒆右虺晒χ罚俊?/p>
我的基本忠告很簡(jiǎn)單,而且是發(fā)自內(nèi)心的:全力獲得最佳教育,充分利用高中和大學(xué),學(xué)會(huì)如何學(xué)習(xí)。
不錯(cuò),為創(chuàng)建微軟,我未完成大學(xué)學(xué)業(yè),不過(guò)輟學(xué)之前我已經(jīng)在哈佛呆了三年,而且我真心希望有一天能重返校園。以前我也說(shuō)過(guò),誰(shuí)也不應(yīng)該輟學(xué),除非他堅(jiān)信自己正面臨著一個(gè)一生僅有一次的機(jī)會(huì),但就算在那個(gè)時(shí)候也還是應(yīng)該深思熟慮。
在俄亥俄州教六年級(jí)的老師凱西·克里德蘭寫道,“我的好幾個(gè)學(xué)生聲稱你根本沒(méi)有讀完高中。因?yàn)槟愠晒α耍业膶W(xué)生就覺(jué)得他們也可以不必要接受良好的教育。”
我高中畢業(yè)了的!
計(jì)算機(jī)行業(yè)中確實(shí)有很多人沒(méi)有讀完大學(xué),但是我從來(lái)沒(méi)有見(jiàn)過(guò)有誰(shuí)高中沒(méi)讀完就成功創(chuàng)業(yè)的。確切地說(shuō),我認(rèn)識(shí)的人當(dāng)中根本沒(méi)有高中輟學(xué)的,更沒(méi)有高中輟學(xué)后事業(yè)成功的。
我的公司創(chuàng)立早期,有一個(gè)相當(dāng)出色的兼職程序員,聲稱要從高中輟學(xué)來(lái)做全職。我們叫他不要這么做。
我們公司里確實(shí)有好些人沒(méi)有讀完大學(xué),但我們不希望人們輟學(xué)。誰(shuí)要想在我們公司謀職,有畢業(yè)證書(shū)肯定會(huì)優(yōu)先考慮。
不一定只有在大學(xué)才能獲取信息,在圖書(shū)館也可以學(xué)習(xí)。但人家遞給你一本書(shū)并不能自動(dòng)地讓你學(xué)到東西。你需要向別人學(xué)習(xí),提問(wèn)題,將設(shè)想付諸實(shí)施,設(shè)法驗(yàn)證自己的能力。這一切,往往不是讀一兩本書(shū)就可以做得到的。
接受的教育應(yīng)該是廣泛的,雖然對(duì)某些領(lǐng)域情有獨(dú)鐘也不失為一件好事。
讀高中時(shí),我有一段時(shí)間醉心于軟件編寫,但大部分時(shí)間里,我的學(xué)習(xí)興趣相當(dāng)廣泛。我父母鼓勵(lì)我這么做,對(duì)此我感激不盡。
大學(xué)期間,我修了很多不同的課程,但我從頭至尾只選修了一門計(jì)算機(jī)課。我讀書(shū)涉獵很廣。
有位家長(zhǎng)寫信說(shuō),她15歲的兒子“鉆進(jìn)計(jì)算機(jī)無(wú)底洞里了”。他的網(wǎng)站設(shè)計(jì)課得了“A”,但別的科目分?jǐn)?shù)都在下降,她寫道。
這個(gè)孩子犯了一個(gè)錯(cuò)誤。高中和大學(xué)給你提供了最佳機(jī)會(huì),你可以廣泛學(xué)習(xí)——數(shù)學(xué),歷史,各種學(xué)科——有機(jī)會(huì)跟著別的孩子一起做項(xiàng)目,親身感受到群體的動(dòng)力。你對(duì)計(jì)算機(jī)、舞蹈、語(yǔ)言或其他任何的科目有深入的興趣也無(wú)可厚非,但太偏執(zhí)而舍棄學(xué)習(xí)廣度就不是一件好事了。
如果高中階段興趣過(guò)于集中,你會(huì)面臨兩個(gè)問(wèn)題。第一個(gè)就是進(jìn)了大學(xué)以后你很可能沒(méi)法改變。另一個(gè)問(wèn)題就是如果分?jǐn)?shù)不夠高,你就很難考入大學(xué),而無(wú)法向那些積極性很高,很有才能的學(xué)生一起學(xué)習(xí),他們可以真正幫助你了解這個(gè)世界。
大學(xué)期間可以適當(dāng)考慮專業(yè)的問(wèn)題。深入掌握自己感興趣的領(lǐng)域的專業(yè)知識(shí),能夠引導(dǎo)你走向成功,除非這個(gè)專業(yè)沒(méi)有發(fā)展前途,或者你并不很擅長(zhǎng)這個(gè)方面。讀研究生是獲取專業(yè)知識(shí)的一個(gè)途徑,雖然從純經(jīng)濟(jì)角度來(lái)看,大學(xué)畢業(yè)后再接受教育不一定算是明智的投資。
Unit 5PB克里斯托弗·里夫 —— 真正的超人
他“比飛馳的子彈還快,比火車頭更有力,輕輕一躍就能跳上高大的建筑物?!彼褪侨澜缱顐ゴ蟮某瑯O英雄。1977年,克里斯托弗·里夫出演超人系列電影,全國(guó)觀眾歡呼喝彩??死锼雇懈セ钴S、英俊、強(qiáng)壯,一如影片中的超人,而且似乎戰(zhàn)無(wú)不勝。他滑雪,駕船,駕駛飛機(jī),潛水,騎馬,打網(wǎng)球,無(wú)一不是技藝高超,揮灑自如。誰(shuí)也無(wú)法想象克里斯托弗會(huì)是另外一種樣子。
1995年5月27日,一切都改變了。當(dāng)時(shí)克里斯托弗和妻子達(dá)納·莫羅西尼帶著年幼的兒子威爾住在弗吉尼亞州。他參加了一項(xiàng)為期三天的馬術(shù)比賽。他的坐騎“東方快車” 看上去狀態(tài)頗佳。42歲的克里斯托弗也顯得同樣神采奕奕,氣定神閑。
對(duì)克里斯托弗而言,比賽進(jìn)行得很順利,雖沒(méi)有名列前茅,但也沒(méi)有落到最后。但在一場(chǎng)兩英里的障礙賽中,第三次跨越障礙時(shí),馬和騎手之間不知怎么失去了默契?!皷|方快車”突然停了下來(lái),可是克里斯托弗還在繼續(xù)前行,他身子飛過(guò)馬的頭頂,頭部著地摔了下來(lái):一動(dòng)不動(dòng),甚至沒(méi)有呼吸。
克里斯托弗顱腔底部的脊柱折斷了,頸部以下癱瘓。他不能說(shuō)話,甚至不能自己呼吸。當(dāng)時(shí)醫(yī)生們認(rèn)為他的生存幾率只有百分之五十。
絕望攫住了克里斯托弗·里夫的心。他想,也許放棄生存的努力是最佳的方案。死亡似乎是最不費(fèi)勁、痛苦最少的一件事。他想放棄生存對(duì)家人而言也是最佳方案。但這時(shí)他看見(jiàn)妻子達(dá)納站在他身邊,對(duì)他說(shuō):“你依然是你。我愛(ài)你?!?/p>
從那一刻開(kāi)始,克里斯托弗一心只想著活下去。他鼓起勇氣,開(kāi)始為生命而戰(zhàn)斗。幾天以后,克里斯托弗接受了手術(shù),術(shù)后他的上半身恢復(fù)了一些知覺(jué)。不過(guò),醫(yī)生們?nèi)匀徊粯?lè)觀。他可能永遠(yuǎn)不能再走路了。他也許永遠(yuǎn)就只能靠著呼吸器來(lái)呼吸了。
克里斯托弗要證明醫(yī)生們錯(cuò)了。首先,他想靠自己呼吸。事故過(guò)后五個(gè)月,他要求拿掉呼吸器。他只勉強(qiáng)地呼吸了十次就得重新連上呼吸管。克里斯托弗毫不氣餒,第二天又多呼吸了幾次。到第四天的時(shí)候,他不用幫助可以呼吸七分鐘了。三個(gè)月以后,他可以一次持續(xù)90分鐘。1995年底,他已經(jīng)可以回家了。
在那以后不久,克里斯托弗覺(jué)得自己已經(jīng)做好準(zhǔn)備,可以重新面對(duì)世界了。他有話要說(shuō)。他想告訴人們,不論面對(duì)怎樣的挑戰(zhàn),都不能放棄。他開(kāi)始頻頻在公眾場(chǎng)合出現(xiàn)。在多倫多作過(guò)激揚(yáng)的演說(shuō),在波士頓大學(xué)畢業(yè)典禮上進(jìn)行過(guò)講演。不論克里斯托弗出現(xiàn)在哪里,人們都起立喝彩,很多人甚至淚流滿面。
與此同時(shí),克里斯托弗也重新開(kāi)始工作。很顯然,他不可能再去扮演以前的角色了,于是轉(zhuǎn)而執(zhí)導(dǎo)。他的處女作影片《暮色如斯》證明創(chuàng)作靈感并沒(méi)有離他而去。
雖然克里斯托弗很堅(jiān)強(qiáng),但也還是有不順心的時(shí)候。事故后的一年里,他面臨著血栓問(wèn)題,后來(lái)又得了肺炎。有一天做理療時(shí),他摔在地上,折斷了一條胳膊。
每天他都要與自身現(xiàn)實(shí)做斗爭(zhēng)?!霸绯?,我需要20分鐘去哭泣,”他對(duì)一個(gè)記者說(shuō)。在夢(mèng)中和兒子奔跑玩耍,夢(mèng)醒之后他需要20分鐘來(lái)“清醒和調(diào)整···”
但擦干眼淚后,克里斯托弗總會(huì)悄聲說(shuō):“好了,前進(jìn)!”這些話證明,盡管他無(wú)法控制自己的身體,但仍擁有他的勇氣,他的精神,他的內(nèi)在力量。在這個(gè)意義上,他依舊是——也將永遠(yuǎn)是——超人!
Unit 6PA永不放棄
人們勸他引退,說(shuō)他天分不夠,但是花樣滑冰選手保羅·懷利拒絕放棄。
1992年冬奧會(huì)閉幕后,保羅·懷利抵達(dá)華盛頓。走下飛機(jī)時(shí),歡迎的人群開(kāi)始鼓掌。他差點(diǎn)停下了腳步。誰(shuí)在后面呀?他心里嘀咕。雖說(shuō)有銀牌在囊中,他怎么也不敢相信這掌聲是獻(xiàn)給他的。從那一刻起,保羅意識(shí)到自己的生活從此永遠(yuǎn)地改變了。
這位27歲的花樣滑冰運(yùn)動(dòng)員在法國(guó)的阿爾貝維爾獲得了銀牌,從此走向全新的生活。1988年的卡爾加里冬奧會(huì)上,他表現(xiàn)平平,只得了第10名,可如今他再也不是在大型賽事中舉止失措的無(wú)名小卒了;1991年的世界錦標(biāo)賽上,保羅比賽完后,裁判建議他退出冰壇,“給年輕選手讓位”,如今再也聽(tīng)不到這樣的建議了。
跟蹤報(bào)道1991年冬奧會(huì)選拔賽的記者們?cè)鴨?wèn)他“你來(lái)這兒干什么?”,如今再也不會(huì)有這種別有用心的提問(wèn)了。他再也不是美國(guó)冠軍托德·埃爾德雷奇的手下敗將,再也不會(huì)被三度問(wèn)鼎世界冠軍寶座的加拿大運(yùn)動(dòng)員庫(kù)爾特·布朗寧甩在身后。
現(xiàn)在保羅·懷利成了奧運(yùn)英雄。雖然有些人對(duì)他沒(méi)有信心,建議他放棄,可他仍然勇往直前。雖然這個(gè)剛出校門的哈佛畢業(yè)生經(jīng)?;孟耄x開(kāi)嚴(yán)酷的冰上訓(xùn)練生活會(huì)是怎樣,但依然苦苦堅(jiān)持著;這個(gè)年輕人發(fā)現(xiàn):不管途中有多少障礙,要經(jīng)歷多少次失敗,目標(biāo)終能實(shí)現(xiàn),而且他證明了這一點(diǎn)。
