It is the spirit that I humbly accept the Centennial Nobel Peace Prize.Forty years today, the Prize for 1961 was awarded for the first time to a Secretary-General of the United Nations posthumously, because Dag Hammarskjold had already given his life for peace in Central Africa.我自己之所以能走上為聯(lián)合國服務(wù)的道路，是因為有我的家人和各大洲許多朋友做出的犧牲和奉獻——其中一些人已經(jīng)過世——他們是我的良師益友。我對他們表示最誠摯的感激。

Harvard is a world-famous institution for higher education, attracting and appealing best minds, and brought them up generations up generations.China and the United States are far apart geographically, differ greatly in the level of economy and cultural background.Owing to earthquake, flood, plague, and famine, or to alien invasion and internal turmoil, some of these ancient civilizations withered away, some were destroyed and others become assimilated into other civilizations.Chinese civilization, thanks to its strong cohesive and inexhaustible appeal, has survived many vicissitudes intact.More than two thousand years ago, there emerged the Confucianism represented by Confucius and Mencius, the Taoism represented by Laozi and Zhuangzi, and many other theories and doctrines which are famous in the term of “Masters’ hundreds of schools”

On the same day, the prize for 1960 was awarded forthe first time to an African – Albert Luthuli, one of the earliest leaders of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa.For me, as a young African beginning his career in the United Nations a few months later, those two men set a standard that I have sought to follow throughout my working life.In a world filled with weapons of war and all too often words of war, the Nobel Committee has become a vital agent for peace.Only by understanding and addressing the needs of individuals for peace, for dignity, and for security can we at the United Nations hope to live up to the honor conferred today, and fulfill the vision of our founders.我們在聯(lián)合國所做的一切工作都是以維護每個人真正的持續(xù)發(fā)展為標(biāo)準。
