公司名稱翻譯中應(yīng)該注意的幾個(gè)問(wèn)題

近幾年來(lái)，針對(duì)我國(guó)公司名稱翻譯中出現(xiàn)的一些問(wèn)題，不少有識(shí)之士相繼著文，辨是非、析原因、探正譯，為實(shí)現(xiàn)譯名的規(guī)范化和增強(qiáng)譯名的可讀性做了大量富有成效的工作。不過(guò)，筆者在研讀有關(guān)文獻(xiàn)時(shí)也發(fā)現(xiàn)，部分文獻(xiàn)在對(duì)某些問(wèn)題的看法上仍有偏頗甚至錯(cuò)誤的地方，有再商榷并加以澄清的必要。

－、以偏概全的問(wèn)題

——“公司”并非“不是company，就是corporation”

《企業(yè)名稱的翻譯問(wèn)題》一文認(rèn)為：“‘公司’的英語(yǔ)名稱不是company（簡(jiǎn)縮詞為Co.〕，就是corporation（簡(jiǎn)縮同為Corp。）?！痹撐淖髡呋蛟S是為強(qiáng)調(diào)company與corporation乃“公司”的兩個(gè)首選對(duì)應(yīng)詞才這么說(shuō)的，但這樣做畢竟有以偏概全和誤導(dǎo)讀者之賺。大家知道，在表示“公司”“及“企業(yè)”〕之義時(shí)，英文中除了使用company和corporation，也不時(shí)使用“公司’’廣義上的對(duì)應(yīng)詞，諸如firm，house，business，concern，combine，Partnership，con1plex，group，consortium，establishment，venture，conglomerate，multinational，transnational等。就是在專有公司名稱中，“公司”也決非只有company與corporation之說(shuō)，lines，agency等也是名正言順的“公司”，有時(shí)甚至是前者所不能替代的“公司”。具體說(shuō)。

1．line（s）：（輪船、航空、航運(yùn)等）公司。例如：

Atlantic Container Line 大西洋集裝箱海運(yùn)公司。

Hawaiian Air Lines，夏威夷航空公司

2．a(chǎn)gency：公司，代理行。例如:

The Austin Advertising Agency 奧斯汀廣告公司

China Ocean Shipping Agency 中國(guó)外輪代理公司

3．store（s)百貨公司。例如：

Great Universal Store 大世界百貨公司（英）

Tesco Stores（Holdings）坦斯科百貨公司（英〕

4． associates了（聯(lián)合）公司。例如：

British Nuclear Associates 英國(guó)核子聯(lián)合公司

Subsea Equipment Associates Ltd.海底設(shè)備聯(lián)合有限公司（英、法、美合辦）

5．system7（廣播、航空等）公司。例如：

Mutual Broadcasting System 相互廣播公司（莫）

Malaysian Airline Svqtpm Rhd.馬來(lái)西亞航空公司

6． office：公司，多與head，home branch等同連用。例如。

3M China Limited Guangzhou Branch Office

7． service（s)：（服務(wù)）公司。例如：

此外，exchange，center等詞在特定的上下文中也可轉(zhuǎn)義表示“公司”。例如：

American Manufacturers Foreign Credit Insurance Exchange

美國(guó)制造商出口信用保險(xiǎn)公司

Binks（Shanghai）engineering Exhibition Center, Ltd.賓克斯（上海）涂裝工程設(shè)備展示有限公司

值得一提的是，不僅“公司”的表達(dá)法多種多樣，就是一些特定的公司往也不止一種說(shuō)法，例如，“聯(lián)合公司”除了associates之說(shuō)，另外還有以下各靈活表達(dá)法。

二、輕言習(xí)慣的問(wèn)題

－－“保險(xiǎn)公司”并非“都叫｀insurance company’

《實(shí)用翻譯教程》一書(shū)中有這樣幾句話：“其次，特定的企業(yè)也會(huì)有自己用詞的習(xí)慣，久而久之便成了行規(guī)，最典型的是｀保險(xiǎn)公司’，無(wú)論哪個(gè)國(guó)家，也無(wú)論規(guī)模大小，都叫“insurance company’”，（劉季春，1996：204）《教程》作者是在講述company與corporation的用法區(qū)別時(shí)說(shuō)這段話的，其言外之意是說(shuō)，“保險(xiǎn)公司”的｀｀公司”只能用company而不能使用corporation，因?yàn)榱?xí)慣使然，倡事實(shí)并非如此，筆茬《英漢對(duì)外貿(mào)易詞典》第464和465兩頁(yè)上就見(jiàn)到了數(shù)家Insurance Corporation。它們是：

聯(lián)郭儲(chǔ)蓄貸款保險(xiǎn)公司（美〕由此看來(lái)，“保險(xiǎn)公司’，之｀｀公司”可以是company，也可以是corporation，還可以是exchange（冽見(jiàn)前文），據(jù)查，office與concern世可與Insurance連用而表示“保險(xiǎn)公司”。值得注意的是，｀｀保險(xiǎn)公司”中的“保險(xiǎn)”二字也不止insurance一說(shuō)，有例為證。

三、似是而非的問(wèn)題

——“office”非“支公司”

總公司”的幾種常見(jiàn)英譯法》一文中有這么幾句話：｀｀無(wú)促如何由無(wú)法柑branch和一office看成是corporation或con1panv的同義詞，就是說(shuō)，在｀總公司’，｀分公司’或｀支公司’同時(shí)出現(xiàn)在一句中時(shí)，與｀總公司’（corporation）相對(duì)的只能是branch和office了。前者作｀分公司'解，后者作｀支公司’解”。（胡仲胤，1993：57）在我國(guó)，認(rèn)為office就是天經(jīng)地義的｀支公司；的人或許不在少數(shù)。實(shí)踐中，“支公司”也確有譯作office的（e.g.中國(guó)絲綢進(jìn)出口總公司廣東省分公司汕頭市支公司，China National Silk lmp．＆Exp.Corp.Guangdong Branch Shantou Office）。可有趣的是，筆者在上千家英文公司名稱中竟未找到一家將corporation和office同用于口語(yǔ)并分別表示“總公司”和“支公司，的。自己因此猜想這是否意味著在公司名稱中漢英用詞習(xí)慣有別了或者我們對(duì)office－詞的理解有訛？帶著后一個(gè)問(wèn)題，筆者查詢了部分英義工具書(shū)，總的看法是：office常作business解，有時(shí)也作concern和complex的同義詞。而business有這么一種定義，a person，partnership，or corporation engaRed in commerce，manufacturing，or a service（Webster's Encyclopedia Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language，Updated Revised Deluxe Edition, P．283），由此定義不難看出，office無(wú)疑可以指從事商業(yè)或生產(chǎn)的corporation。因此，主觀地把office與corporation對(duì)立起來(lái)的做法是欠妥的。其次，從以下幾個(gè)同組的搭配及所表達(dá)的內(nèi)涵中也不難得出office是“公司”而非“支公司”’的結(jié)論－h(huán)ead office：總公司； home office：國(guó)內(nèi)總公司；branch office，分公司；insurance office：保險(xiǎn)公司。

四、省譯的問(wèn)題

——“實(shí)業(yè)”、“開(kāi)發(fā)”等字眼并非可以隨意省譯

在漢英公司名稱中，｀“公司”有時(shí)可以省譯；在實(shí)踐中，｀｀總公司”之“總”字世時(shí)有所省，另外，有的同志又主張省譯”｀實(shí)業(yè)”！開(kāi)發(fā)，和“工貿(mào)”等字眼，因?yàn)椤皩?shí)在找不到可以表明｀實(shí)業(yè)’的字眼”，｀｀但有哪口家銳意進(jìn)取的公司不想開(kāi)發(fā)新產(chǎn)品“?“在英語(yǔ)中找不到合適的對(duì)等詞”.（丁振祺1989：37）筆者以為，在公司名稱的翻譯上，當(dāng)省則省，能省才省，切忌動(dòng)輒亂省，否則名將不“明”（即難以表明公司的規(guī)模、隸屬關(guān)系、經(jīng)營(yíng)范圍、公司性質(zhì)等信息）。例如，如果可以將“珠海特區(qū)發(fā)展實(shí)業(yè)公司”中的“發(fā)展”、“實(shí)業(yè)”“公司”等字眼全部省去，‘｀譯名”豈不成了｀｀珠海特區(qū)”？！當(dāng)然，｀實(shí)業(yè)公司““工貿(mào)公司”等究竟如何翻譯才既忠買又通順，倒值得進(jìn)”一步探討。比如，“實(shí)業(yè)公司”目前至少有五種譯文，其中間為佳譯或是否還有其它妙譯則有待定論和實(shí)踐的檢驗(yàn)。

五、主觀臆斷的問(wèn)題

--以“General”譯“總公司”之“總”并非“顯然不妥”

由于general可作“通用””一般用途”解，譯界有的同志便認(rèn)為，“顯然，用General表示｀總’字不妥”。筆者以為，用general表示“總”字不僅無(wú)可厚非，而且易與國(guó)際接軌。君不見(jiàn)，世界上不少著名公司就是使用general來(lái)表示其”｀龍頭”之義的嗎?例如： General Transport Company 運(yùn)輸總公司（英)

General American Transportation Corp.美國(guó)運(yùn)輸總公司

Central OII Company 石油總公司（美）

其實(shí)，general 作“總”解在法語(yǔ)公司名稱中也可得到佐證，因?yàn)樵诜ㄕZ(yǔ)總公司名稱中，除了用universelle和centrale表示“總”外，也經(jīng)常使用generale表達(dá)同一意思。例如。Compagnie Generale lntercambi 貿(mào)易總公司（意）

Compagnle Generaie de Brasserie 啤酒總公司（法）

Compagnie Generale des Materiaux Atomiques 棱燃料總公司（法）雙方本著公平、自愿和誠(chéng)信的原則，經(jīng)友好協(xié)商達(dá)成如下條款（包括基本條款以及其他條款兩個(gè)部分）： Under the principles of fairness, free will and good will, IT IS HEREBY AGREED between both parties as follows（the Contract includes two parts, i.e.the General Articles and the Contingent Articles）:-

（一）基本條款： General Articles

第二篇：公司名稱翻譯

中國(guó)實(shí)行市場(chǎng)經(jīng)濟(jì)以來(lái)，各種外向型企業(yè)、外貿(mào)公司得到迅猛的發(fā)展，有的還向國(guó)際大企業(yè)進(jìn)發(fā)，這些企業(yè)和廠家除有了自己的漢語(yǔ)名稱外，也還需要一個(gè)英文名稱，以利國(guó)際交流。但怎么把這些各種各樣的企業(yè)和廠家都準(zhǔn)確地翻譯成英文，以免誤譯，損壞該公司和工廠的名聲呢？翻譯公司的英文譯員在翻譯諸如“有限公司、股份有限責(zé)任公司、分公司、上市公司、實(shí)業(yè)有限公司”時(shí)如何選擇準(zhǔn)確的譯法？下面我們就把各類公司的習(xí)慣英文翻譯羅列如下，供翻譯公司的譯員參考。
