West lake, a famous place of interest in China, has a long history and along with it a lot of stories.Some are real and some are imaginary.Whatever they are, these stories are always touching and give the beautiful West Lake a much deeper meaning than what we see through our eyes.There is a famous bridge on West Lake.It is called Broken Bridge（斷橋）.Although it is called Broken Bridge, it is not actually broken.It got its name from the way it look in winter.On a fine day after a heavy snowfall, from a distance the bridge seems to be broken in the middle which was the result of snow melting on the middle part.Broken Bridge is famous because of its beautiful winter scene, but even more so because of a love story.It is the place where the beautiful Chinese love story of Xuxian and Bainiangzi started.It's one of the four most popular traditional Chinese love stories.It is not a true story, but almost every one in China knows this story.Broken Bridge is the place where Xuxian and Bainianzi met each other.When the two walked on the bridge that day, it suddenly became rainy.Bainiangzi, a beautiful girl, didn't have an umbrella, but Xuxian had one.So they shared the umbrella and started their first talk.Xuxian, the young man, was astonished by the beauty of Bainiangzi.They both liked each other very much and kind of fell in love at first sight.But Bainiangzi was not an ordinary human being.She was originally a white snake that had practiced asceticism（修行）for 1,000 years.She loved people and wanted to be a human being herself instead of an immortal（神仙）.Finally God let the snake be a woman for its good behavior.The day Xuxian and Bainianzi met was the first day she became a human.It was fate that they met.They fell in love and soon got married and lived a happy life.They started a clinic for ill people.Bainiangzi had magic power and used it to help those poor ill people.But there was a monk named Fahai, who knew what Bainianzi actually was.Regardless of the good deeds she did, he insisted on regarding her as evil and decided to kill her.He went to Xuxian and told him what his wife really was.Xuxian was so astonished that he was died of fright.To save her husband, Bainiangzi risked her life to steal a kind of holy grass from heaven which could bring dead people back to life.Xuxian came back to life.He knew his wife was a snake, but he also knew her good nature and still loved her.Unfortunately, Fahai, the monk, caught Bainiangzi and locked her up under the Leifeng Pagoda（雷峰塔）which was located along the West Lake.This pagoda is still standing there today.The end of the story is a sad one, but people do love the story.As I rewrite this story, I remember how it moved me when I first heard it when I was a little girl, and I begin to think why people love this story so much.My answer is they are touched by Xuxian and Bainiangzi's love which was the result of a 1000-year wait.And most importantly, they are touched by the good nature of the white snake.Similar to Westerners, Chinese do not have a good impression of snakes.People tend to think they are evil, but here in this story, the white snake is kind and generous and brave enough to love.People do love her.While the monk seemed to be good, what he did was really bad.He is much closer to evil.So I think the story tells people not to be prejudiiced.We should judge a person by what he really does, not by his appearance or origin.

The Arab insisted that he had never seen the camel.At last the men took him before a judge.They said that the Arab had stolen their camel.“I?ve never seen their camel,” insisted the Arab.“But I?m a man of the desert, and I?ve learned to look carefully at everything I see.This morning I saw the tracks of a lost camel.I knew this because there were no man?s tracks near those of the camel.I also saw that the camel must be blind in the right eye, because he had only eaten the grass on his left side and had not touched the grass on his right.The animal was lame because with one foot he left a track much lighter than any of the others.He had lost a tooth, because wherever he ate grass, there was always a small space left untouched.I also found groups of ants near the tracks of the camel.They were pulling pieces of corn.From these facts I was able to tell what goods the animal was carrying.”

The judge and the two men were satisfied with what the Arab had said.Together the four men set out to look for the lost animal.11.EDISON’S BOYHOOD

Thomas Edison was born in 1847.When he was a child, he liked to find out how things worked.One day when he was five, his father saw him sitting on some eggs, and asked what he was doing that for.Tom did not reply.Instead, he asked his father why he was not able to hatch chickens while hens could.Young Tom was in school for only three months.During those three months, he asked a lot of questions.Most of them had nothing to do with his lessons.His teacher did not know why the boy had so many strange questions.He told Tom?s mother that Tom was not bright and was not worth teaching.His mother took him out of school and taught him herself.The boy read a lot.He became very interested in science.By the time he was ten, he had already built a chemistry lab for himself.He planted vegetables in his garden and sold them to buy what he need for his lab.Once his mother was ill and she sent for a doctor.The doctor said she needed an operation at once.But it was night and the lamp in the room gave poor light.Edison thought hard.Finally he had an idea.He collected all the lamps in the house and put them and put then on a long table.Then he placed a big mirror behind them.Now there was enough light, so the doctor could operate.Edison?s mother was saved.At the age of twelve, Edison began selling newspapers on a train.When he was free, he printed a newspaper and sold copies to the railway workers.One day in August, 1862, Edison saw a little boy playing on the tracks at a station.A train was coming near quickly, and the boy was too frightened to move.Edison rushed out and carried the boy to safety.The boy?s father was so thankful that he taught Edison how to send messages by railway telegraph.Edison soon became very good at it and later he left home to work in different cities.This gave him a start in life.At that time he was just a boy of sixteen.12.THE FISHERMAN AND THE GENIE Once upon a time there was an old fisherman.He went fishing very early every morning, but he never cast his net more than four times a day.One morning, he went out early to the sea.He cast his net for the first time, and drew in the body of an animal.He cast it a second time, and drew in an old basket full of sand.He cast it a third time, and drew in a lot of stones.It seemed he would have nothing to take home that morning.Day had now broken, and he cast his net for the last time.After some time, he began to drew the net in.He found it was very heavy.But there were not any fish in it.Instead he found a jar with a lid.He shook the jar, but could hear nothing.So he took off the lid and looked inside.He could see nothing.After a while a light smoke came slowly out of the jar.Then little by little, the smoke grew heavier and thicker until finally it turned into a terrible Genie!“Get down on your knees,” said the Genie, “for I’m going to kill you.” “Why? Didn’t I set you free from the jar?”

“That’s why I’m going to kill you, but I’ll let you choose how you’re going to die.”

“But why?”

“Listen, and I will tell you my story.”

The fisherman was not frightened.He said: “Since I must die, I must.But before I die, answer me one question.”

When he heard this, the Genie changed again into smoke.Slowly the smoke went back into the jar.When all of it was in the jar, the fisherman quickly put the lid on and threw it back into the sea.13.LOOK CAREFULLY AND LEARN My friend Carl will never forget a certain professor.This professor taught him chemistry at the university.He was an ordinary-looking little man with thick glasses, but he had a strange way of making his classes lively and interesting.And the lessons he taught were not easily forgotten.Carl remembers one of his first lessons from this professor.After the students were all in the chemistry lab, the professor brought out three bottles.One was filled with kerosene(煤油), one with castor oil, and one with vinegar.“Now watch carefully,” said the professor.“Pay attention to everything that I do.”

He then filled a cup with some of the kerosene, some of the castor oil and some of the vinegar.As the students watched with fascination, he mixed the three together.After that, he held up one of his fingers and showed it to the class.He then dipped it into the cup.After a few seconds he took his finger out.“Now watch,” he said.“Remember, you must do everything that I do.”

He put a finger in his mouth and sucked it.He nodded with a smile.Then he handed the cup around the class of students.Each student dipped a finger into the mixture and sucked it.Each immediately made a face.The mixture tasted horrible.When the cup was at last returned to the professor, he shook his head sadly.“I’m sorry,” he said to the class, “but none of you watched carefully enough.Yes, I sucked a finger, but the finger I put into my mouth was not the one I had dipped into the cup.”

It was their first important lesson as students of chemistry and they never forgot it.14.THE BLIND MEN AND THE ELEPHANT

Once upon a time there were six blind men who lived in a village in India.Every day they went to the road nearby and stood there begging.They had often heard of elephants, but they had never seen one, for , being blind, how could they?

一、斷橋鎮(zhèn)概況斷橋鎮(zhèn)位于關嶺縣東南，東臨黃果樹風景區(qū)，南與鎮(zhèn)寧縣相接，320國道和214省道穿境而過，交通十分便利。全鎮(zhèn)10個村54個自然寨84個村民組，農(nóng)戶3100戶，農(nóng)業(yè)人口13010人，國土面積 76.2平方公里，其中耕地面積7664.8畝，人均耕地面積0.6畝，人均收入2594元。全鎮(zhèn)處于打邦河 腹地，平均海拔668米，年平均氣溫18.2℃，降雨量1212毫米，無霜期329天，屬亞熱帶季風濕潤氣候，素有“天然溫室”之稱，是我省有名的兩大早熟蔬菜基地之一。主要農(nóng)產(chǎn)品有早蔬、水果、煳辣椒加工及生豬養(yǎng)殖等。早蔬種植始于1981年，1987年反季節(jié)蔬菜種植取得成功，現(xiàn)蔬菜種植品種有西紅柿、瓜豆類、辣椒等近30個品種，種植面積達5800余畝，年產(chǎn)值約6000萬元。水果類有桃、李、柑橘、枇杷等10余種。地方特色產(chǎn)業(yè)—柴火糊辣椒加工始于2003年，經(jīng)營戶由原來的2戶發(fā)展 到目前的近70戶，日均銷量7000余斤，年產(chǎn)值近4000萬元。

二、斷橋信用鎮(zhèn)創(chuàng)建歷程

截止2009年12月31日，斷橋信用社有職工8人，各項存款余額2658.5萬元，較年初增加584.4萬元，同比多增71.17萬元，各項貸款余額2827.72萬元，各項收入224.15萬元，同比多收43.6萬元。對轄區(qū)農(nóng)戶建檔評級工作始于2005年，2006年全面鋪開，通過成立領導小組、開展宣傳動員、調(diào)查建檔、適時年審等工作，以農(nóng)戶小額信用貸款為基礎，方便廣大農(nóng)戶貸款搞活生產(chǎn)，加快了鎮(zhèn)域經(jīng)濟的發(fā)展，社會信用環(huán)境明顯改善。2009年初，縣、鎮(zhèn)兩級政府及信用社即著手信用鎮(zhèn)的創(chuàng)建工作，分別成立了信用村（組）、信用鎮(zhèn)評定工作領導小組。于2008年7月29日召開啟動會、8月4日召開全鎮(zhèn)村兩委動員大會，鎮(zhèn)、村兩委干部及信用社人員按照“進村入戶八件事”的標準召開群眾會，抓好宣傳動員。至2009年末，共創(chuàng)建信用組68個，占全鎮(zhèn)行政組的81%，信用村8個，占全鎮(zhèn)行政村的80%。根據(jù)《貴州省農(nóng)村信用社信用鄉(xiāng)（鎮(zhèn)）、信用村（組）評定及管理辦法（暫行）》的規(guī)定，經(jīng)斷橋鎮(zhèn)信用村（組）評定領導小組申請，關嶺縣信用鄉(xiāng)（鎮(zhèn)）評定領導小組初評申報，安順辦事處驗收并報省聯(lián)社備案核查后，授予關嶺自治縣斷橋鎮(zhèn)“信用鎮(zhèn)”稱號。
