      中國(guó)人很注重食物。實(shí)際上,我覺得他們有時(shí)簡(jiǎn)直是為食物而著迷。我第一次體驗(yàn)到中國(guó)文化的這一方面是在1998年我去北京時(shí)的一次宴會(huì)。我以前常吃中國(guó)菜,但我想象不到真正的中國(guó)宴會(huì)會(huì)有多么驚人。前六七道菜貌似已經(jīng)把桌子填滿了,有的盤子已經(jīng)危險(xiǎn)地疊在其他盤子之上。我以為一共就只有這么多菜了,于是我開始狼吞虎咽。其他人只是每道菜吃了一點(diǎn)點(diǎn)然后就放下筷子繼續(xù)聊天。“他們食欲夠小的,”我想。

      我還發(fā)現(xiàn)英國(guó)人喜歡在上菜之前把它攪和一下。我有一次在餐廳點(diǎn)了蘑菇湯,當(dāng)它被端上桌的時(shí)候我大為驚駭。這個(gè)湯看起來(lái)就是一碗灰色液體,我喝過(guò)后才知道這確實(shí)是用蘑菇做的。面包和烤土豆中夾的食物也是“泥狀食物”的例子,正像北京餃子的餡。這里的食物和中國(guó)餐桌上的藝術(shù)大相徑庭。中國(guó)菜看起來(lái)很美觀,可以拍成照片。我們永遠(yuǎn)不會(huì)把食物搗成無(wú)法辨認(rèn)的形狀。

      另外,許多英國(guó)菜的名字難以記憶。實(shí)際上他們常用法語(yǔ)、意大利語(yǔ)詞匯。但有一件事我著實(shí)敬仰:英國(guó)人吃飯的禮節(jié),即使只是吃土豆。
