President Levin, thank you very much.Dean Brodhead;fellows of the Yale Corporation;fellow Yale parents, families, and graduates.It's a special privilege to receive this honorary degree.I was proud 33 years ago to receive my first Yale degree;I'm even prouder that, in your eyes, I've earned this one.I congratulate my fellow honorees.I'm pleased to share this honor with such a distinguished group.I'm particularly pleased to be here with my friend the former President of Mexico.Sen? or Presidente, usted es un verdadero lider y un gran amigo.I congratulate all the parents who are here.It's a glorious day when your child graduates from college.It's a great day for you;it's a great day for your wallet.[Laughter] Most important, congratulations to the class of 2001.To those of you who much the chance to say a few words on this occasion.I know Yale has a tradition of having no commencement speaker.I also know that you've carved out a single exception.Most people think that to speak at Yale's commencement, you have to be President.But over the years, the specifications have become far more demanding.Now you have to be a Yale graduate;you have to be President;and you have had to have lost the Yale vote to Ralph Nader.This is my first time back here in quite a while.I'm sure that each of you will make your own journey back at least a few times in your life.If you're like me, you won't remember everything you did here.[Laughter] That can be a good thing.[Laughter] But there will be some people and some moments you will never forget.Take, for example, my old classmate Dick Brodhead, the accomplished dean of this great university.I remember him as a young scholar, a bright lad—[laughter]— a hard worker.We both put a lot of time in at the Sterling Library, in the reading room where they have those big leather couches.[Laughter] We had a mutual understanding.Dick wouldn't read aloud, and I wouldn't snore.[Laughter] Our course selections were different, as we followed our own path to academic discovery.Dick was an English major and loved the classics.I loved history and pursued a diversified course of study.I like to think of it as the academic road less traveled.[Laughter] For example, I took a class that studied Japanese haiku.Haiku, for the uninitiated, is a 15th-century form of poetry, each poem having 17 syllables.Haiku is fully understood only by the Zen masters.As I recall, one of my academic advisers was worried about my selection of such a specialized course.He said I should focus on English.[Laughter] I still hear that quite often.[Laughter] But my critics don't realize, I don't make verbal gaffes;I'm speaking in the perfect forms and rhythms of ancient haiku.I did take English here, and I took a class called “The History and Practice of American Oratory,” taught by Rollin G.Osterwies.And President Levin, I want to give credit where credit is due.I want the entire world to know this: Everything I know about the spoken word, I learned right here at Yale.[Laughter] As a student, I tried to keep a low profile.It worked.Last year the New York Times interviewed John Morton Blum because the record showed I had taken one of his courses.Casting his mind's eye over the parade of young faces down through the years, Professor Blum said, and I quote, “I don't have the foggiest recollection of him.” [Laughter] But I remember Professor Blum.And I still recall his dedication and high standards of learning.In my time there were many great professors at Yale, and there still are.They're the ones who keep Yale going after the commencements, after we have all gone our separate ways.I'm not sure I remembered to thank them the last time I was here, but now that I have a second chance, I thank the professors of Yale University.That's how I've come to feel about the Yale experience, grateful.I studied hard, I played hard, and I made a lot of lifelong friends.What stays with you from college is the part of your education you hardly ever notice at the time.It's the expectations and examples around you, the ideals you believe in, and the friends you make.In my time, they spoke of the “Yale man.” I was really never sure what that was, but I do think that I'm a better man because of Yale.All universities, at their best, teach that degrees and honors are far from the full measure of life.Nor is that measure taken in wealth or in titles.What matters most are the standards you live by, the consideration you show others, and the way you use the gifts you are given.Now you leave Yale behind, carrying the written proof of your success here, at a college older than America.When I left here, I didn't have much in the way of a life plan.I knew some people who thought they did, but it turned out that we were all in for ups and downs, most of them unexpected.Life takes its own turns, makes its own demands, writes its own story, and along the way, we start to realize we are not the author.We begin to understand that life is ours to live but not to waste and that the greatest rewards are found in the commitments we make with our whole hearts—to the people we love and to the causes that earn our sacrifice.I hope that each of you will know these rewards.I hope you will find them in your own way and your own time.For some, that might mean some time in public service.And if you hear that calling, I hope you answer.Each of you has unique gifts, and you were given them for a reason.Use them and share them.Public service is one way, an honorable way, to mark your life with meaning.Today I visit not only my alma mater but the city of my birth.My life began just a few blocks from here, but I was raised in west Texas.From there, Yale always seemed a world away, maybe a part of my future.Now it's a part of my past, and Yale, for me, is a source of great pride.I hope that there will come a time for you to return to Yale to say that and to feel as I do.And I hope you won't wait 也許我對(duì)你們未來(lái)將會(huì)實(shí)現(xiàn)的人生價(jià)值和取得的事業(yè)成就過(guò)于樂(lè)觀了。但是我不這么認(rèn)為。假如你同意我的觀點(diǎn)，那么請(qǐng)?jiān)试S我提出一個(gè)問(wèn)題，一個(gè)深植于耶魯之精神與傳統(tǒng)，以至于你們中的許多人都已經(jīng)把他看作與生俱來(lái)的問(wèn)題，那就是，你將如何奉獻(xiàn)？你將如何把你在學(xué)院中為集體奉獻(xiàn)、在紐黑文為這座城市奉獻(xiàn)的精神，帶到你的生活之中，去改善你身邊每一個(gè)人的生活？這樣重要的一個(gè)問(wèn)題，在現(xiàn)在這樣的時(shí)刻提出，正當(dāng)其時(shí)。請(qǐng)讓我先解釋為什么要提出這樣的問(wèn)題，然后讓我們看看應(yīng)該如何來(lái)回答。

亞里士多德說(shuō)，我們每一個(gè)人都是天生的政治動(dòng)物。但是在他眼里，當(dāng)今的我們也許早已經(jīng)成為了一個(gè)完全陌生的種群。十八個(gè)月前，美國(guó)選舉出了一位新總統(tǒng)。他肩負(fù)的使命是全面而深入地解決這個(gè)國(guó)家所遭遇到的最緊迫的問(wèn)題——教育，醫(yī)保，氣候變化，以及重塑美國(guó)的國(guó)際形象。在選戰(zhàn)的后半段，金融危機(jī)的影響擴(kuò)散開(kāi)來(lái)，于是經(jīng)濟(jì)復(fù)蘇與金融業(yè)改革也被提上日程，列入了這本已十分宏偉的計(jì)劃。之后發(fā)生的事情并沒(méi)有讓我們相信當(dāng)前的體制可以有能力解決 這些問(wèn)題。我們出臺(tái)的復(fù)蘇計(jì)劃遠(yuǎn)沒(méi)有達(dá)到預(yù)期的效果，而中國(guó)采取的相應(yīng)措施比我們有效的多。十五個(gè)月過(guò)去了，美國(guó)的失業(yè)率仍然高達(dá)9.9%。經(jīng)過(guò)幾個(gè)月的拖延，國(guó)會(huì)終于通過(guò)了一項(xiàng)惠及幾百萬(wàn)家庭的醫(yī)療保障計(jì)劃。但是與之相關(guān)的高昂成本會(huì)讓我們未來(lái)幾十年負(fù)債累累，國(guó)會(huì)對(duì)此卻完全無(wú)人問(wèn)津。在哥本哈根我們沒(méi)能就全球氣候變化達(dá)成任何有價(jià)值的協(xié)議。不僅如此，金融業(yè)改革的可能性也在對(duì)關(guān)鍵癥結(jié)的誤解和對(duì)報(bào)復(fù)性舉措的濫用中消耗殆盡。

為什么會(huì)這樣？請(qǐng)先讓我提出我的兩點(diǎn)看法，然后讓我們看看這與你們未來(lái)的政治生涯以及公民身份有什么聯(lián)系。第一，當(dāng)今的政治決策過(guò)程中往往充斥著為了迎合普通選民膚淺的訴求而刻意簡(jiǎn)單化的意識(shí)形態(tài)。第二，美國(guó)的政客為了確保再次當(dāng)選，對(duì)手握重金的利益集團(tuán)過(guò)于看重，而對(duì)他們的行為到底會(huì)給普羅大眾帶來(lái)怎樣的利害卻漠不關(guān)心。

在聯(lián)邦黨人憲章第十篇中，詹姆斯.麥迪遜針對(duì)美國(guó)憲法剛剛確立的共和政體論述過(guò)我上面的第二點(diǎn)看法。他指出，對(duì)個(gè)人利益的追求永遠(yuǎn)無(wú)法被完全消滅，但是一個(gè)良好的政治制度卻可以最大限度地消除這種追求的負(fù)面影響。麥迪遜認(rèn)為，相比起人人追逐自我利益的直接民主體制，共和體制將會(huì)更有效地推選出代表最廣泛群眾利益的人民代表。不僅如此，他還認(rèn)為，一個(gè)由許多不同利益訴求所構(gòu)成的大共和體，相比起由一小撮競(jìng)爭(zhēng)黨派構(gòu)成的小共和體，更易于推動(dòng)人民代表克服狹隘主義的局限。但是自麥迪遜的時(shí)代以來(lái)，我們的政府形式所能發(fā)揮的對(duì)意識(shí)形

態(tài)和黨派爭(zhēng)端的限制作用已經(jīng)被大大削弱。導(dǎo)致這一變化的原因至少有兩點(diǎn)。第一，大眾傳媒手段的普及放大了簡(jiǎn)單政治口號(hào)對(duì)普通選民的影響作用。當(dāng)然，大眾傳媒手段的興起可以通過(guò)對(duì)選民的教育而達(dá)到提高政治決策水平的目的。但是由于結(jié)合了第二點(diǎn)原因，即大眾傳媒時(shí)代的選戰(zhàn)勝利往往對(duì)特殊利益集團(tuán)的政治獻(xiàn)金過(guò)于依賴，大眾傳媒手段便往往被這些利益集團(tuán)所利用，通過(guò)散布過(guò)于簡(jiǎn)單化的信息，來(lái)達(dá)到扭曲政治決策的目的。這樣的變化對(duì)于推行科學(xué)有效的公共政策所產(chǎn)生的阻礙作用是顯而易見(jiàn)的。比如說(shuō)，反對(duì)醫(yī)療保障改革的利益集團(tuán)給降低醫(yī)保成本的計(jì)劃貼上了“死刑審判”的標(biāo)簽，從而使得這些計(jì)劃無(wú)法得以推行。他們通過(guò)鼓吹“政府不干涉醫(yī)療保障事業(yè)”來(lái)阻礙公共醫(yī)療保險(xiǎn)機(jī)制的創(chuàng)立與推進(jìn)。實(shí)際上，僅退休醫(yī)保、醫(yī)療低保、退伍醫(yī)保三項(xiàng)，就承擔(dān)了這個(gè)國(guó)家超過(guò)40%的醫(yī)療保障成本。我并不想在此事上加入個(gè)人偏見(jiàn)。（也許我已經(jīng)加入了。）我只想指出，公共醫(yī)療事業(yè)的決策過(guò)程，如今早已被意識(shí)形態(tài)和集團(tuán)利益所扭曲和左右。

在像今天這樣的場(chǎng)合中，通常我們會(huì)反思世界的整體情況，勉勵(lì)大家貢獻(xiàn)心力，讓世界得更好；這似乎暗示著這個(gè)世界每況愈下。我不確定世界是否真的變得更糟；比起三十年前，不，比起十八年前，不，比起四年前（笑聲）。但這也不代表世界變得更好。若不以緬懷過(guò)往的方式來(lái)比較上一代和這一代的差異，也不提你們這一代像史奴比狗狗（饒舌歌手）那種說(shuō)話方式和腔調(diào)（笑聲）（掌聲），或不管是像五角（饒舌歌手）還是0.25美分（笑聲）。以客觀角度來(lái)看，這個(gè)世界確實(shí)變得更好，但同時(shí)也變得更糟。前進(jìn)一步，又倒退一步，彷佛宇宙在科技進(jìn)步和文化倒退間達(dá)成平衡，使人類(lèi)的進(jìn)展呈鐘形曲線。其中一小部分顯示了進(jìn)步帶來(lái)的喜悅和安逸，但也顯示了相同比例的困境。對(duì)于起伏不定的經(jīng)濟(jì)和種種混亂局勢(shì)的不樂(lè)觀，使我們逐漸忽略生活質(zhì)量的變化。

畢業(yè)典禮是一個(gè)談?wù)撊蛩Y源危機(jī)的適當(dāng)場(chǎng)合，我認(rèn)為汞污染的情況顯示－水資源危機(jī)一如往常。

十年前，當(dāng)我們汲汲營(yíng)營(yíng)地為生活打拼時(shí)，發(fā)生了九一一事件；一九九一年，當(dāng)各種新興行業(yè)創(chuàng)造出巨大財(cái)富時(shí)，美國(guó)陷入經(jīng)濟(jì)危機(jī)；一九八一年，當(dāng)我準(zhǔn)備在電視界大展身手時(shí)（笑聲），一九八二年，《bosom buddies》（湯姆．漢克斯首次展露頭角的電視喜?。K遭停播（笑聲）。一九七一年，當(dāng)彩色電視逐漸普及時(shí)，播出的總是美國(guó)青年在越戰(zhàn)中出生入死的消息；一九六一年，當(dāng)衛(wèi)星首次將實(shí)時(shí)影像傳送到世界各地時(shí)，播出的卻是柏林圍墻開(kāi)始建造的影像。

這十年當(dāng)中，世事呈現(xiàn)相同的yin-yang thang（陰陽(yáng)相生）；我打算為這個(gè)說(shuō)法申請(qǐng)版權(quán)（笑聲）。陰陽(yáng)相生，湯姆．漢克斯版權(quán)所有（笑聲）。在2011年畢業(yè)典禮上也顯示了相同的陰陽(yáng)相生，謝謝。我們擁有各種科技設(shè)備，能永久記錄地球另一端的種種變革，但同時(shí)也記錄了我國(guó)各種充滿仇恨的族群。三餐不繼的美國(guó)人愈來(lái)愈少，但你們是否知道，肥胖問(wèn)題對(duì)本國(guó)一半的人口造成多大影響？無(wú)論我們?cè)诒镜厣虉?chǎng)中能找到多少特價(jià)品，許多人仍被房租和日常生活開(kāi)銷(xiāo)壓得喘不過(guò)氣來(lái)。上世紀(jì)大半期間，美國(guó)已不再發(fā)動(dòng)實(shí)質(zhì)、或甚至意識(shí)形態(tài)戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)，但邁入千禧年后十一年半的今天，我國(guó)軍隊(duì)仍在其中九個(gè)戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)參戰(zhàn)。無(wú)論是購(gòu)買(mǎi)智慧產(chǎn)權(quán)物品或我們喜愛(ài)的藝術(shù)作品，只要點(diǎn)一下鼠標(biāo)，花點(diǎn)錢(qián)就能獲得。這意味著你們或許會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)，并不一定能靠自己選擇的專業(yè)謀生。

這個(gè)時(shí)代也有其獨(dú)特的優(yōu)點(diǎn)，這是無(wú)法否認(rèn)的，例如“無(wú)聊”似乎已被擊潰（笑聲）。人們總是有事可忙，但這不代表總是心不在焉地度日無(wú)傷大雅。不論在廁所中、餐桌上、汽車(chē)后座、婚禮上，割禮上（笑聲）、畢業(yè)典禮上，總是有人檢視訊息、在twitter貼文、上網(wǎng)、下載、玩游戲、分享、購(gòu)物、聽(tīng)語(yǔ)音留言，手中這些每個(gè)月僅需付少許服務(wù)費(fèi)的裝置占據(jù)了我們的注意力。同樣的科技也造成名人泛濫現(xiàn)象；這不是什么值得高興的事（笑聲）。任何人－雖然我不得不承認(rèn)，sam tsui確實(shí)紅得要命（笑聲）（歡呼聲）－現(xiàn)在，任何人都能享受眾所矚目的滋味，而成名期間，從安迪．沃荷所說(shuō)的短短十五分鐘延長(zhǎng)到十五個(gè)月，只要你愿意在鏡頭前做某些事。雖然我們演藝人員的消息通常由電視上說(shuō)著正式新聞?dòng)谜Z(yǔ)、看起來(lái)像“獨(dú)裁者”的恐怖家伙發(fā)布，但這不會(huì)造成廣大影響；除非我住在北韓，或在比佛利山闖紅燈（笑聲），或上網(wǎng)購(gòu)物被發(fā)現(xiàn)，或在不合宜的時(shí)間、地點(diǎn)做些蠢事，剛好被某人的手機(jī)拍下。在座每個(gè)人都有機(jī)會(huì)這么做。忍耐一下我?？瞥潭鹊睦∥模浾撛诰W(wǎng)絡(luò)上一覽無(wú)遺，即使你將它刪除，搜尋引擎依然能使你做過(guò)的蠢事無(wú)所遁形。所以，確實(shí)有個(gè)獨(dú)裁者，但他不是小說(shuō)中的虛構(gòu)人物；事實(shí)上，他代表使用搜尋引擎的每一個(gè)人。所以，無(wú)論我怎么計(jì)算，結(jié)果總是不分勝負(fù)。正面和負(fù)面的發(fā)展達(dá)成平衡；x 和 y相等（笑聲）；希望和恐懼比例相當(dāng)。但后者的發(fā)展令我憂心，因?yàn)榭謶郑炷?！恐懼已成?011年一股強(qiáng)大的勢(shì)力?？磁_(tái)上圍繞著各位畢業(yè)生的我們，對(duì)每一屆畢業(yè)生都有相同的期待，希望你們能盡一己之力，使我們免于恐懼。我們面臨許多恐懼，恐懼成了輕易就能售出的商品，就像性一樣?？謶至畠r(jià)、容易取

得；恐懼引人注目、如八卦般傳播迅速，也如八卦般聳動(dòng)、吸引人、有利可圖?？謶帜芘で聦?shí)，令人變得無(wú)知?？謶轴莘饑?guó)內(nèi)混亂的經(jīng)濟(jì)，逐漸波及到所有家庭。

不久前某天，我坐在家里觀賞電視球賽轉(zhuǎn)播，看見(jiàn)一則夜間新聞?lì)A(yù)告：“學(xué)校毒害我們的孩子？本專題和夏日最火辣比基尼特輯將于今晚十一點(diǎn)播出。”（笑聲）當(dāng)時(shí)我家剛好有學(xué)齡孩童，我擔(dān)心他們可能會(huì)在學(xué)校里遭到毒害，而夏天還要好幾周才會(huì)來(lái)臨，所以－（笑聲）我轉(zhuǎn)到新聞臺(tái)，看看是怎么回事。這則新聞的實(shí)際內(nèi)容是，某家廠商供應(yīng)的漢堡被驗(yàn)出某種細(xì)菌含量偏高，為了安全起見(jiàn)，這批漢堡將全面停售。這批漢堡原本預(yù)定出售給它州學(xué)校餐廳，所幸及時(shí)回收。所以，這則新聞所質(zhì)疑的問(wèn)題，答案是－不（笑聲），學(xué)校并沒(méi)有毒害學(xué)生（笑聲）。但沒(méi)錯(cuò)，那年夏天海邊確實(shí)出現(xiàn)一些超辣的比基尼（笑聲）。

美國(guó)前海軍指揮官john paul jones曾說(shuō)，“恐懼經(jīng)過(guò)培養(yǎng)將會(huì)變得更強(qiáng)大；信念經(jīng)過(guò)培養(yǎng)將會(huì)更堅(jiān)定不移。”這就是歷史吸引我的原因。因?yàn)橛^察200多年前nathan hale在美國(guó)獨(dú)立戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)中的事跡－他曾經(jīng)住過(guò)那棟大樓（歡呼聲）（掌聲）－逐一對(duì)照2011年的美國(guó)；在我看來(lái)，恐懼本身就是一個(gè)令人恐懼的存在，恐懼本身充滿威脅、陰魂不散。而我認(rèn)為，信念深植于我們心中，蘊(yùn)含在我們獨(dú)立自主的美國(guó)理想中。恐懼無(wú)時(shí)無(wú)刻地在我們耳邊竊竊私語(yǔ)、在我們眼前高聲吶喊；而信念必須由你們每天在鏡中看到的自己培養(yǎng)。前者總是緊追在我們身后、糾纏不休、令我們停滯不前；后者則激勵(lì)我們、帶給我們驚喜、刺激我們的創(chuàng)造力、驅(qū)使我們不斷地前進(jìn)。
