      A Century’s Dance

My great-great-grandfather was very nervous, even though he had done it thousands of times. He and his teammates held their breath in total darkness?waiting for the music. At the age of 101, he knew it was likely his last chance to compete in a dancing contest. The drums kicked in and, slowly but surely, he started the moves of Gaoshan--a folk dance unique to my part of China. The music was serene...the motion was graceful....and everything was so harmonious. And then, everything changed!

The tempo sped up.The dancers started shaking their hips.It was completely unexpected but yes, they were dancing modern disco.I was delighted, but not everyone liked it.Some argued that the traditional dance was, compromised by the inclusion of Western fluff. So I asked Angong, “Why not just do a typical Gaoshan dance?”

“Are you kidding me, sweetheart?” he replied.“Where would we be without some clashes and conflicts?”

That was Angong’s gut reaction, but what he implied set me thinking.“Where would we be without some clashes and conflicts?”

Looking back on the life of my great-great-grandfather, it was a journey marked by clashes every step of the way. When he was a teenager, China’s door was busted wide open.He cut off his ponytail following the end of Qing---China’s last feudal Dynasty.During the day, cars ran alongside rickshaws. At night, jazz clashed with Chinese opera.Dancing was a luxury reserved for the rich and privileged. When the People’s Republic was founded in 1949, Angong danced on the streets with joy. After years of unrest, he felt a sense of belonging and new possibilities. That was the moment he knew he wanted to be an artist. After the Cultural Revolution, Angong witnessed China’s reform and opening-up.Both Deng Lijun of Taiwan and the Carpenters of America were huge stars at the time. For the first time in years, Angong didn’t have to follow one set of doctrines or one form of dancing for that matter.Angong’s personal journey mirrored the transformation of a nation, a transformation encapsulated in the life of a man who pursued artistic expression. Please remember, Angong and his generations were born into a China that was struggling to keep at bay an outside world that threatened China’s self-perception and self-rule.A century later, this is a different China, and fortunately, a China that has learned lessons history had to offer, and now it seeks to re-engage the west.Angong was a man of his times, but he has always been open to new voices, new ideas, new dances. He adapted, changed and grew by learning from the world around him, both Chinese and Western.By being open to each other, we can grow in unexpectedly beautiful ways, just like my Angong’s disco Gaoshan dance.Ladies and gentlemen, I implore you to join my great-great-grandfather and me as we dance with a spring in our step into that great unknown that will be our future.

Journalism and I: A Love Story My first acquaintance with the love of my life was hardly romantic. My grandpa was sitting in front of the television trying his best to ignore me while I buzzed around him like a bee, trying to convince him that homework is meaningless.Halfway through my list of 101 reasons not to do homework, he threw his hands back and sighed: “Oh, jolly. It's like I'm watching two TVs at the same time!” My heart stoppedand I was suddenly transfixed by a vision-I saw myself all dressed up in a fancy suit and pearl necklaces and recounting on big events of the day.And not just to my stubborn gramps, who never pays attention anyways, but to the world. The audience wept, they cried, they smiled and cheered at what I had to say.Millions of people went to sleep knowing they'd hear my voice the next day.At that moment, I fell head over heels for journalism.Like all teenage love, it was an affair of the heart untroubled by reason.I walked around my block, talking with street vendors, cleaning ladies and classmates who ran away from home with my recorder pen.Nights went by with me locked in the toilet and recording and replaying the monologue of my show. When my mum suggested a more traditional job like teacher or nurse, I'd laugh and shock her by saying that I will visit prisons and war zones as a reporter. It felt as adventurous as telling them I wanted to be a tattooed heavy metal singer.Everything about the relationship sounded rebellious and fun.But as with all torrid affairs, my love for journalism slowly burnt out like a glorious Roman candle. And like a pair of young lovers we went our separate ways and I had a string of other lovers. One week, I was the next food critic for the Michelin Guide, another week I was becoming the first Chinese female director to win an Academy Award. My passions never endured and I was Elizabeth Taylor, desperate for the safety of marriage yet reluctant to stay in a relationship. When I enrolled two years ago at the Communication University of China, one of the best journalistic schools in the country, through a series of chance events, I was re-introduced to my former love. The rediscovery of journalism wasn't as I expected. But the more I came to truly know journalism, the more engaged I became.I’ve come to realize that journalism is both a window through which to see the world and also a funhouse mirror that can distort the truth. On national TV, I saw tawdry cover-ups and doctored facts reported without skepticism in an effort to create a harmonious society. In overseas news outlets, I read ridiculous rumors about China eating dead babies and living in absolute poverty under authoritarian rule.At times, China was depicted as little more than Chairman Mao doing Kungfu while riding a rickshaw.Joseph Pulitzer once said: “Our republic and its press will rise or fall together.”All the disingenuous opinions, so-called facts and active misinformation in the so-called news, both local and foreign, made me fear for the future.A voice inside me was dying to come out.I wanted to set the record straight, for people both inside and outside China.Journalism was all I could think about from the minute I woke up.The sheer contrast between what I saw with my own eyes and what I read kept reminding me to run into the arms of journalism. And so, I was in love once more, but this time guided by the piercing light of reason. It’s the same, but it is also difference. My desire to shine an uncompromising light onto all that is crucial to China is no longer simply a heart-felt dream, though that is still true.It is now also a responsibility, a vocation, a calling formed in the purifying crucible of the mind.Though my heart still propels me to my destiny, it is my head that guides me along the path. There will undoubtedly be times on my journey that I will wish I had chosen a less demanding partner but, no matter what happens, I know that together journalism and I will soar to new heights and report back to the world all that we see and learn.

      Today I’m going to talk about discover yourself.Ever since the accelerated development of human civilization, perpetual scientific discovery of nature have companied mankind all along the journey.It was by discovering the world around us that human beings have been able to live a more sophisticated life.However, as G.K.Chesterton once said “one may understand the cosmos, but never the ego, the self is more distance than any star.Thus, a life is a journey of unrelenting offers to discover more of ourselves.When I was six, I constantly picture myself as an elegant and skilled pianist rendering Xiao Bang’s nocturnal beautifully on the stage, receiving award and applause after my performance.However, as I further my piano lessons, it was hard to be oblivious of my non-gifted skills.Sometimes I couldn’t help but have this feeling of despair, when I woke up to the reality and discover that my goal was unrealistic.Brutal but real.It was the first time;I had discovered that I couldn’t have it at all, when I was twelve.I thought the coolest job in the entire universe was to be a surgeon.I spent hours and hours watching the drama Grey's Anatomy and couldn’t help falling in love with the kind of live those doctor lead on the scream.I was utterly mesmerized by the scalpel and all those fancy medical terms that use.However, I stop to dream about being a surgeon when I discover that it was the idea of being a surgeon that appeals to me, not what it truly was.As a result, the dream ended and I discovered some more about myself.This year, I turned sixteen and I could proudly say I do not dream to be, but ascertain to pursue being a lawyer in the future.Since junior high school I had always been awarded the most eloquent debater in every single debater participated in.I can not only think logically, but also deliver my thought promptly.My huge interest in philosophy also acts my reason in whenever I tried to argue with something equivocal.Being aware of the obstacles and the hardships on the way becoming a great lawyer never panics me, for the simple reason that I have this faith and passion in what I am aspiring after.G.K.Chesterton was absolutely correct;

      the

      most

      complicated

      part

of comprehending the world is the study of somehow smaller world, ourselves.I subsequently realized that growing up is a process that discover yourselves. We got to know what we truly are and become who we dream to be.As we shape ourselves and as we shape of our lives,we gradually become more aware of limits and potentials, and consequently learn to adjust what’s out there, and by that ladies and gentlemen I’m proud to say that I have discovered part of myself, sue to discovering today and definitely a lot more in the future.I would always keep this embedded in my heart.Things do not change, we do!

1.First of all, I would like to say that this is a rather prevalent phenomenon these days, we can see a lot of students around me are having this young puppy love and I think it’s utterly normal for them because I can understand why they do this. They try to seek recognition from the other sex instead of academic success. However, I morally against it because it’s suddenly detrimental to our future development and it would never last long.First of all, as we can understand that we are still rather immature psychologically in this current stage. And most important thing for love is that we cannot actually thoroughly understand what love is.And for most important part is that I can see students around me having puppy love for simply messing around, seeking pleasure instead of making commitments. And because of this kind of flippancy attitude, I think all they could do is to mess around and that is why puppy love dies in the blink of an eye.And for example I could say, Mary would be dating David on the first day of November, however two days later she is kissing Tom on the other side of the campus. And that’s very normal these days. And secondly I think is because for puppy love is very detrimental to our future development because this particular stage of our time what we should do is to allocate our time to studying and participating in ex-curriculum activity in order to go to the wonderful college in the future. And time is scarce because of that I think as Shakespeare once said love is blind and a lot of young students thought they’ve lost themselves in this procedure. And that is very very costly. And so in conclusion, we’d like view this problem from the view of economics, when we are making more rational choices, we should consider the marginal benefits and marginal costs for this particular problem and in the case of puppy love, I see the marginal costs exceeds the marginal benefit a lot.And that is reason why I think this is something we should not be approbated and for the case of those people who are thinking that true love might be lost through this way.I would they that the true love can wait, because if not, it wouldn’t be true love at all, and we’ll have nothing to lose.and that is the reason why I have this kind of opinion.I think the reason why I choose to be a lawyer in the future I choose to pursue this career is different from choosing to become a pianist and surgeon is because this was one time I think this kind of career that’s best fits me.I’m a sort of debater in my early days and I have this kind of technique in order to pursue this career. And that is the practical reason why I think this career is best fits me.And secondly, because personally I have watched a movie called the time to kill it is about a case where a black girl got raped and the only lawyer who step to fight for her is a white lawyer, and the whole process is very complicated but what I see from that story is that I’m very interested in human rights and I want to argue for these people who had their rights trampled and their freedom, how to say, steal away. And if I can be that lawyer, although sometimes I may go against my will and argue for a murderer, a reaper or a criminal, I will always remember that I have taken the oath, that I have to do this job this is my obligation. And because of these reasons I have this passion because I love this job, and I have technique because I’m a debater and a speaker in public situations. And this is why this is different from the other choices.I think love is something that cannot be measured qualifiedly, but the reason why I brought up this terminology in economic is because it first jumps to my mind when I think about making rational choices, and love is something that make us irrational and that is the reason why put out these terminologies, but I think to answer your question of what love is, personally I would say that, knowing from parents view, and also looking at different cases around me from novel, films and movies.I think love is something about commitment. It’s something of responsibility, not just love for the first sight.Because if you believe in love for the first sight, you should believe that it would be gone instantly away. And because of that I think love is something should be taken at heart, it’s not just physical attraction.Because one it would die out. What makes for love go for forever is kind of responsibility that we have to shoulder. That is something that we should not be given away instantly, and that is what I think is love.

Long long ago, in a land far away, there lived a beautiful young girl. She was very sad.Because her mother had died and her father had married again. His new wife had two ugly daughters, Esmerelda and Griselda

Soon after, her father also died and life immediately(立即)changed for the girl.

“You will be our servant(仆人), ”said her stepmother(繼母).“You will do everything we say.”

“You must sleep in the kitchens.” said the stepsisters.

There she had to do hard work from morning until evening, get up before daybreak(黎明), carry water, make the fires, cook, and wash.Besides(除了)this, the sisters did everything imaginable(可以想象)to hurt her. They made fun of her.In the evening when she had worked herself weary(厭倦), there was no bed for her.Instead she had to sleep by the hearth in the ashes(灰).And because she always looked dusty(塵土飛揚(yáng))and dirty, they called her Cinderella.“There are cinders(煤渣)all over your clothes!” exclaimed(喊叫)the stepmother.“ Cinderella. That's your new name.Clear these things away, Cinderella.”

“Cinderella!Cinderella!” Esmerelda and Griselda said.“Oh, how clever you are, Mama!”

One day, an invitation(邀請(qǐng))arrived from the palace.“Girls, listen to this,” said the stepmother.Cinderella was serving(準(zhǔn)備)the breakfast. She listened as her stepmother read the invitation.“The King is having a ball,” she said excitedly(興奮).“He is looking for a wife for the prince!Oh, my dears, this is wonderful. He will probably choose one of you, but it will be such a hard choice to make.”Am I invited too, stepmother?“ asked Cinderella.”You!Certainly(當(dāng)然)not!“ exclaimed(驚呼)her stepmother.”The thought of such a thing.A scruffy servant(破舊的仆人)going to a ball, when only beautiful ladies are invited!“

”Hah!Hah!“ laughed the stepsisters.”Beautiful! That doesn't include you, Cinderella!“

”You may help my two lovely girls to get ready,“ said her stepmother.”O(jiān)h,“ said Cinderella

”We shall all have new dresses, girls, and we shall go shopping today.Clear away these things, Cinderella.“

'Oh, I wish I could go to the ball,' thought(認(rèn)為)Cinderella. The day of the ball arrived and the whole day was spent preparing Esmerelda and Griselda.Cinderella did her best to make the sisters look pretty, but it was an impossible task. Finally, the coach arrived to collect the girls and their mother.Cinderella was very tired and she wandered back to the kitchens.”O(jiān)h, I did so want to go,“ she sighed(嘆氣)as she sat down by the fire.”What's to stop you?“ asked a voice(聲音).”Who's that?“ asked Cinderella, looking around.”I'm here by the door.“ A strange woman walked up to Cinderella.”I heard you the other day, wishing you could go to the ball.Well, the ball is this evening, and you're going.“

”But how?“ asked Cinderella.”What can you do?“

”Anything I want to,“ said the woman.”I'm your fairy(仙女)godmother, and I'm here to send you to the ball. She sat down.“Come now,” she said.“Dry those tears(擦干眼淚).We have work to do.I need a large pumpkin(南瓜), two mice(老鼠)and a frog. Can you find these?”

“Yes,” said Cinderella, mystified(迷惑)by the request(請(qǐng)求).“Off you go, then.”

When Cinderella found all the things, her fairy godmother took them all outside.“Now for the magic,” she said. She waved(揮舞)her hands and the air began to twinkle(閃爍)and sparkle(閃光).The pumpkin began to grow and change, until standing there was a coach. The mice changed into two fine footmen(步兵), the frog into the driver, and the rats(老鼠)into two beautiful horses to pull the coach.Cinderella clapped(拍)her hands.“It's beautiful!” she cried.“In you get,” said her fairy godmother.“But I can't go like this,” said Cinderella.“Like what?” asked the fairy godmother.“You look lovely to me.”

Cinderella looked at herself. While the magic had been working on the pumpkin, it had also been working on her.Instead of her ragged(破爛)dress she wore a beautiful ball gown(晚禮服), with glass slippers(玻璃鞋)on her feet.“Oh, fairy godmother,” said Cinderella.“It's lovely. How can I thank you?”

“By going to the ball,” said the fairy godmother.“Off you go, but remember, the magic stops working at midnight(午夜).Everything will change back then. Now go and enjoy yourself.”

“Good-bye, fairy godmother,” called Cinderella, as the coach swept off.Cinderella arrived at the palace(皇宮)and walked into the ballroom.Everyone stopped and stared(看著).“Who is she?” people asked, including her stepmother and stepsisters. The prince saw her, and had eyes for no one else for the rest of the evening.Cinderella danced only with the prince(王子), and as the evening passed, he fell in love with her.A clock chiming(報(bào)時(shí))reminded Cinderella of her fairy godmother's warning(警告).'It must be eleven o'clock,' she thought(告知), but she asked the prince.“What time is it?”

“Almost midnight,” he answered.“Oh, no!” cried Cinderella.“I must go!”

“You can't.Not now,” said the prince.“I must.” And Cinderella swept out of the room, and ran out of the palace. As she ran, the clock finished chiming.Cinderella's clothes changed back into rags(破布), and the coach and horses were nowhere to be seen. The prince tried to follow, but he couldn't catch up.When he reached(走到)the door, all he found was one glass slipper. He ran to the main door.“Was a beautiful girl just driven(趕)out of here?” he asked the guard(士兵).“No, your Highness.I've only seen a scruffy servant(邋遢的仆人)girl,” the guard answered.“I've lost her,” said the prince, and he returned sadly to the palace. The next morning, Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters were talking about the ball. The prince meanwhile(同時(shí))decided to look for the mysterious(神秘)girl he had fallen in love with.He issued(發(fā)表)a proclamation(公告).“Whoever the glass shoe fits(合適), shall be wife to the prince.”

The prince and his footman(仆人)went from house to house of all the ladies invited to the ball.He finally arrived at the stepmother's house.“It's my shoe!” cried Esmerelda, trying desperately(穿)to pull the shoe on.“please, miss!” said the footman.“Your foot is too big.you will break the slipper(玻璃鞋).”

Griselda tried the shoe, but her toes were far too long.“Is there anyone else?” asked the prince.“There's only Cinderella, the maid(女仆),” said the stepmother.“But she wasn't even at the ball.”

“All the ladies in the kingdom(王國(guó))must try the slipper,” said the footman.Cinderella was called from the kitchen.Esmerelda and Griselda laughed when they saw how dirty she was.But their laughter turned to tears when they saw Cinderella's foot slide easily into the slipper.“Oh!” they cried.“It fits!”

The prince looked at Cinderella and realised that she was the girl that he had fallen in love with.Cinderella took the other slipper from her pocket(口袋)and put it on.The prince was happy to have found her, and on a bright sunny day, he and Cinderella were married. They lived happily ever after.

01】If I were a Boy Again

If I were a boy again, I would practice perseverance(毅力)more often, and never give up a thing because it was hard or inconvenient. If we want light, we must conquer darkness.perseverance can sometimes equal genius in its results.“There are only two creatures,” says a proverb, “who can surmount the pyramids—the eagle and the snail.”

If I were a boy again, I would school myself into a habit of attention;I would let nothing come between me and the subject in hand.I would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once. The habit of attention becomes part of our life, if we begin early enough.I often hear grown-up people say “I could not fix my attention on the lecture or book, although I wished to do so” , and the reason is, the habit was not formed in youth. If I were to live my life over again, I would pay more attention to the cultivation of the memory.I would strengthen that faculty by every possible means, and on every possible occasion. It takes a little hard work at first to remember things accurately;but memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble. It only needs early cultivation to become a power. If I were a boy again, I would look on the cheerful side.Life is very much like a mirror: if you smile upon it, I smile back upon you;but if you frown and look doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return.Inner sunshine warms not only the heart of the owner, but of all that come in contact with it.“who shuts love out ,in turn shall be shut out from love.”

Finally, instead of trying hard to be happy, as if that were the sole purpose of life, I would, if I were a boy again, I would still try harder to make others happy.【譯文】假如我又回到了童年,我做事要更有毅力,決不因?yàn)槭虑槠D難或者麻煩而撒手不干,我們要光明,就得征服黑暗。

      ★【演講稿02】I love English

      As everyo

am.It is a dream deeply rooted in my soul.I have a dream that one day, I can run, jump and pitch just like I used to be.I have a dream that one day, I can go back to my dream sports and join the national team.I have a dream that one day, I can stand on the highest place at the Olympic Games. With all the cameras pointing at me I will tell everyone that I'm so proud to be a Chinese athlete!

This is my hope. This is the faith that I continue my steps with!!

With this faith ,I will live through the strong wind and heavy rain ,never give up!

So let victory ring from my heart, from all of you. When we allow victory to ring.I must be the one!

In my imagination, I'm a bird, a magical bird.I carry my dreams all with me by my big wings.I fly through the mountains ,through the forests ,over the sea, to the sun ,the warmest place in the aerospace!

      Every night, I have a dream, I see a girl---smiling

      ★【演講稿05】Don’t give up

If we would ever accomplish anything in life, let us not forget that we must persevere. If we would learn our lessons in school, we must be diligent and not give up whenever we come to anything difficult. We shall find many of our lessons very hard, but let us consider that the harder they are the better they will do to us if we will persevere and learn them thoroughly. But there are some among us who are ready to give up when they come to a hard example in mathematics, and say, “I can't do this.” They never will if they feel so.“I can't” never does anything worthwhile;but “I'll try” accomplishes wonders.Let us remember that we shall meet with difficulties all through life. They are in the pathway of everyone. If we will only try and keep trying, we shall be sure to conquer and overcome every difficulty we meet with.If we have a hard lesson today, let us strive to learn it well and then we shall be prepared for a harder one tomorrow. And if we learn to master hard lessons in school, it will prepare us to overcome the hard things that we shall meet in life, when our school days are over.【譯文】

      ★ 【演講稿06】Treasure Your Life

      Dear fri

ends, we all know that in winter, nearly all the trees stop growing and nearly all the flowers stop blooming. But as spring is coming, the trees will turn green and all kinds of flowers will smile for us once again. That means trees and flowers can wither and then begin to grow again. But what about our lives? Each one of us has only one chance to live in the world, so we must treasure our lives!Living in the world is not easy for every person. But it is something that we all must do.We can own blue sky, the warm sunshine and all the beauty;only when we are alive, can we enjoy the pleasure of life;only when we are alive, can we do things. But if you lose your life, how can you love others and how can you make contributions to the world? So, please, treasure your life!

In fact we live in the world not only for ourselves, but also for all the people who love us.parents love us very much. When we are happy, they will smile cheerfully. But if we are in trouble, they immediately become sad.As parents, they only hope that we can live with them happily! So, we must also treasure our lives, for our parents!

To treasure your life, remember the following.First, you must learn to smile. If you are always smiling at others, others will smile at you.Smiling can help you overcome your sadness.Don’t cry to the world, just smile!Secondly, never lose heart.Nobody can always be successful in everything. We all fail at some time.please remember the saying, “Failure is the mother of success.” Just keep on showing your courage.Nothing difficult can stop you.Thirdly, imagine your bright future when you grow up.Maybe you will be a doctor, a write or a teacher, but whatever you do, the future must be helpful. So, now, love yourself, and after a few years you will enjoy the life you want. After all, we are still young. We shouldn’t worry about the future too much.We only need to live and study happily.Time is too short to waste. We must love our lives every day.Treasure your life. You can be successful in everything!

Treasure your life. The world will become a more and more beautiful place!

Treasure your life, and a great future will belong to you.★【演講稿07】My Attitude towards Marks 我的分?jǐn)?shù)觀
