大量使用修辭是英文演講的一個(gè)主要文體特點(diǎn)，歷

史上無數(shù)的演講名篇無不以修辭取勝，給人留下深刻的 印象。諸如美國總統(tǒng)林肯的《葛底斯堡演說》中的排比句： “A government of the people，by the people，for the people shall not perish from the earth.”（民有，民治，民享的政府永 遠(yuǎn)不會(huì)在地球上消失）；美國總統(tǒng)肯尼迪就職演說中的對(duì) 句：“Ask not what your country can do for you，ask what you can do for your country.”（不要問你的國家為你做了什么，而要先問你為你的國家做了什么。）；美國黑人領(lǐng)袖馬丁· 路德·金的《我有一個(gè)夢(mèng)想》中反復(fù)使用的諸如“Now is the time”，“I have a dream”，“One hundred years later”，“With this faith”，“Let freedom ring”等重復(fù)手法；美國副總統(tǒng)戈 爾演講中的頭韻：“We should not demean our democracy with the politics of distraction，denial，and despair.”（我們不 可用消解、拒絕和絕望的托辭貶屈我們的民主）；美國民 權(quán)運(yùn)動(dòng)的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人耶西·杰克遜演講中的比喻：“America is not like a blanket—— —one piece of unbroken cloth...America is more like a quilt—— —woven together with one common thread...”（美國不像一張地毯—— —一塊完整的布??美 國更像一條被子—— —用一根線編制在一起??）等不勝 枚舉。這些使用修辭的經(jīng)典詞句給人們留下了難以磨滅 的印記，被很多人熟記并稍加修改后運(yùn)用到自己的寫作 中去。

盡管美國新一任總統(tǒng)奧巴馬的競選獲勝演講（注：講

稿非奧巴馬本人撰寫，執(zhí)筆人是年僅27歲的喬恩·法弗 洛，當(dāng)然奧巴馬也會(huì)參與意見）在某些文體方面已不再固

守傳統(tǒng)，如開始使用“It’s”，“that’s”，“She’s”等縮略形式，不再使用諸如“my fellow citizens”，“my friends”等約定俗 成的呼語，但是在修辭方面卻絲毫沒有懈怠，使用了很多 為其演講增色的修辭手法，下面筆者逐一加以探討。

1.各類演講中最常用的修辭手法非排比（paral-

lelism）莫屬，可以說是必不可少的。排比即將三個(gè)或三個(gè) 以上結(jié)構(gòu)一致或相似的詞、詞組或句子并置在一起。使用 排比會(huì)給人以一氣呵成之感，節(jié)奏感強(qiáng)，增強(qiáng)語言氣勢(shì)，加強(qiáng)表達(dá)效果，可以把論點(diǎn)闡述得更嚴(yán)密，更透徹。在奧 巴馬的演講中不乏成功的排比句。如：“The true strength of our nation comes not from our might of our arms or the

scale of our wealth，but from the enduring power of our ide-als：democracy，liberty，opportunity，and unyielding hope.”

（我們國家的真正力量不是來自我們強(qiáng)有力的武器，亦非

來自我們雄厚的財(cái)富，而是來自我們持久不變的理想：民

主、自由、機(jī)遇和夙愿），這屬于單詞的排比，而這在漢語

中一般并不歸類為排比；再如：“She lived to see them stand

2.對(duì)照或?qū)洌╝ntithesis）也是演講中一個(gè)比較常見的修辭手法。該手法通過將對(duì)比明顯的兩個(gè)事物或事件

并置而達(dá)到強(qiáng)調(diào)差異的目的，對(duì)比的兩方在意思上是相

反的，但在形式是相似的。如：“It’s the answer spoken by

young and old，rich and poor，Democrat and Republican，black，white，Latino，Asian，and Native American，gay，stra

ight，disabled and not disabled...”（無論是年輕人還是年長

者，富人還是窮人，民主黨人還是共和黨人，黑人還是白

人，拉美人、亞洲人還是美國人，同性戀還是異性戀，殘疾

3.重復(fù)（repetition）在漢語的修辭手法里是不單列出

來的。而且上邊談到的排比其實(shí)也屬于重復(fù)的范疇，而后

邊即將談到的頭韻，不會(huì)談到的諧元韻、諧輔韻等語音重

復(fù)也包括在內(nèi)。只不過修辭里指的重復(fù)更狹窄或更具體

一些，一般分為兩種：同義詞重復(fù)和句子結(jié)構(gòu)重復(fù)。同義

詞重復(fù)如：“We rise or fall as one nation；as one people.”（不

論我們沉與浮，我們都是一個(gè)國家、一個(gè)民族）；再如“who

left their homes and their families”（他們離開了自己的家，自己的家人）； 又如：“This is our moment.This is our time.”

（這是我們的時(shí)刻。這是我們的時(shí)代）；還有“every deci-

sion or policy I make as President”（我作為總統(tǒng)所做的每一個(gè)決定和決策）。結(jié)構(gòu)的重復(fù)如“It’s the answer...”重復(fù)

了三次，“Yes we can.”重復(fù)了七次，強(qiáng)調(diào)了奧巴馬作為總

統(tǒng)對(duì)全國上下的充分信賴以及對(duì)光明未來的堅(jiān)信不移，而這一句如今也成為了一句膾炙人口的流行語。結(jié)構(gòu)的重復(fù)與排比很相似，學(xué)生容易混淆。兩者的區(qū)別是排比句

子都并列在一起，結(jié)構(gòu)緊湊；而重復(fù)的結(jié)構(gòu)一般相隔著其

他的句子乃至段落。

4.頭韻（alliteration），即相鄰或不相鄰的一組詞開頭

字母的重復(fù)，也是演講常用修辭之一。如“the heartache

and the hope”（痛苦和希望），如果把heartache換成pain或

agony，意思雖未改變，但頭韻就沒有了，修辭效果明顯下

降； 又如：“Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the

same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poi-

soned our politics for so long.”（讓我們抵制誘惑，以免再次

回到以前那種毒害了我們的政治那么久的黨派偏見、卑

鄙小氣和不成熟）；再如“it is only the chance for us to make

that change”（這是我們唯一加以改變的機(jī)會(huì)），其實(shí)

chance可以用opportunity，但換詞之后就沒有了頭韻。又

如“to put our people back to work and open doors of opportu-

nity for our kids；to restore prosperity and promote the cause

of peace”（使我們的人民重新回到工作崗位，為我們的兒

童提供更多的機(jī)會(huì)，恢復(fù)我們國家的繁榮昌盛，穩(wěn)步推進(jìn)

和平事業(yè)）。使用頭韻的作用是豐富語言結(jié)構(gòu)，以引起聽

眾的注意，使觀點(diǎn)更容易被他們接受。

5.暗喻（metaphor）雖不是演講最常用修辭之一，但也

經(jīng)常出現(xiàn)在演講中，尤其是在馬丁·路德·金的《我有一個(gè) 夢(mèng)想》 中更是俯拾皆是。奧巴馬的演講沒有用很多的暗 喻，畢竟該手法不像排比和重復(fù)等那么重要，而且用多了 但用不好反而會(huì)影響讀者的接受。奧巴馬演講中的暗喻 例句 有 “The road ahead will be long.Our climb will be steep.”（前方的路依舊很長。我們的前進(jìn)將會(huì)充滿坎

坷。）；還有“the rock of our family”（我家庭的基石）用來指 自己的妻子在家庭生活中的重要作用。

6.引用（allusion & quotation）也是演講常用修辭手

法。演講者常常引經(jīng)據(jù)典，一方面顯示自己的博學(xué)，另一 方面讓眾所周知的人或事來幫自己說話能使聽眾更好地

理解自己的觀點(diǎn)。第一種是間接引用，即用典（allusion），指的是提及神話中或歷史上著名的人或事件而使聽眾產(chǎn) 生聯(lián)想。奧巴馬在評(píng)論106歲的安·尼克松·庫珀時(shí)的話就 有很多用典。如 “When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world”（當(dāng)炸彈落在我們的海港，當(dāng) 暴行威脅整個(gè)世界）分別指的是“日本偷襲美國珍珠港” 和“德國發(fā)動(dòng)二戰(zhàn)”；“the buses in Montgomery，the hoses in Birmingham，a bridge in Selma”（蒙哥馬利的公共汽車，伯 明翰的水龍頭，塞爾瑪?shù)臉颍┲傅姆謩e是黑人為爭取權(quán)利 的三個(gè)事件。“蒙哥馬利的公共汽車”指1955年，黑人婦女 帕克斯在蒙哥馬利市的一輛公車上拒絕給一個(gè)白人讓 座，被捕入獄后觸發(fā)了長達(dá)一年的黑人抵制行動(dòng)，最后成 功要求該巿所有巴士廢除種族隔離。“伯明翰的水龍頭” 指1963年，馬丁·路德·金在伯明翰城領(lǐng)導(dǎo)一場(chǎng)為黑人爭 取工作，并反對(duì)禁止黑人在“白人餐館”就餐的斗爭。警察 使用了警犬和水龍頭對(duì)付抗議的群眾。而后金發(fā)表《我有 一個(gè)夢(mèng)想》的著名演說?！叭麪柆?shù)臉颉眲t指1965年，塞爾 馬地區(qū)的黑人不滿政府無理剝奪他們的選舉權(quán)，決定游 行到州首府蒙哥馬利，但在經(jīng)過埃蒙德佩圖斯橋時(shí)，警察 向游行隊(duì)伍施放催淚彈，又用木棍毆打游行人士，結(jié)果造 成百多人浴血的“埃盟德佩圖斯橋”慘劇。這三件事都與 黑人民權(quán)運(yùn)動(dòng)有關(guān)且是建立在美國開國元?jiǎng)椎睦硐肜砟?之下的，所以奧巴馬在演講中重提這些事件，非常符合他 所提出的政治口號(hào)；“A man touched down on the moon，a wall came down in Berlin，a world was connected by our own science and imagination.”（一個(gè)人踏上了月球，一座墻在 柏林轟然倒塌，一個(gè)世界由我們的科學(xué)和想象聯(lián)結(jié)在一 起）則指的是美國人尼爾·阿姆斯特朗成為第一個(gè)登上月 球的人和德國人推倒阻隔東西德28年多的柏林墻，重獲 統(tǒng)一，這兩件事分別指代當(dāng)今世界兩大主題，即和平與發(fā) 展，雖然這里只提到科技發(fā)展。這說明了奧巴馬作為總統(tǒng)

不會(huì)只關(guān)注本國的發(fā)展，更要關(guān)心整個(gè)世界的格局。另外 一種引用是指不加任何修改地直接借用名人名言到自己 的演講中，如奧巴馬直接引用林肯的“a government of the people，by the people and for the people has not perished

from this earth.”（民有，民治，民享的政府永遠(yuǎn)不會(huì)從地球 上消失）。而源自亞特蘭大傳教士的那句“We Shall Over-come”（我們將勝利或我們將打破種族障礙）指的是美國黑 人民權(quán)運(yùn)動(dòng)（1955-1968）時(shí)一首主要歌曲的名字，作為第 一位美國黑人總統(tǒng)的奧巴馬引用起來得心應(yīng)手而又再合 適不過。

綜上所述，多種修辭手法的使用給奧巴馬的競選獲

勝演講增色不少，為其錦上添花，使之堪稱一篇成功演講 的范例。
