Silence
Indeed, for a living thing there is no such thing as true silence, for silence itself is a revelation of the mind and the heart, an echo of the soul of a different form. Some people use silence as a disguise of the emptiness of the head. Some use it as a means to depict their disorientation and melancholy. And some use it as a way of expressing their angers and sorrows....Silence usually is ephemeral. It reminds one of the bronze bells dangling from a pagoda's eaves;on windless days they are a decoration upon the age-weathered beauty, but with wind they give out wonderful tinkling and jingling metallurgic sounds, as if echoing age-old stories of long, long ago...Do you not think the same of silent people?
They say that “silence is golden”, but of what nature is this “gold”? It can include integrity, honesty and kindness;it can stand for indifference to and detachment from fame and fortune;but it can also act as an excuse for hypocrisy, slyness and cowardice...the glittering of gold may not necessarily be the most brilliant lustre in the world Can it be that permanent silence is only represented by death?
Perhaps even death cannot represent true silence, for the carrier of the soul can turn into dust, so that the sincere and wise voices from the bottom of the heart will trigger long-lasting echoes in the seas of human hearts...

Today, I was quite sad, she asked me why I was always taking the bath first, and I said to her, I was exhausted. She was unhappy, in her mind, I treated her not as well as usual, but how can I do? I was not as rich as before! We moved to the small apartment, there was only a shower in the bathroom, it was so cold to take a shower in such a freezing winter. But I found that if one person took the shower first, the room could get a little warm, so every time I rushed to the bathroom first.I was thinking that, when she took the shower, the room would get warmer, at least 1℃, 2℃ or 3℃
Now I can't give her comfortable life, bring her the luxury restaurant, buy expensive dresses for her, but at least, I can give her 1℃ love.1℃
A little Girl
Sitting on a grassy grave, beneath one of the windows of the church, was a little girl. With her head bent back she was gazing up at the sky and singing, while one of her little hands was pointing to a tiny cloud that hovered like a golden feather above her head. The sun, which had suddenly become very bright, shining on her glossy hair, gave it a metallic luster, and it was difficult to say what was the color, dark bronze or black. So completely absorbed was she in watching the cloud to which her strange song or incantation seemed addressed, that she did not observe me when I rose and went towards her.Over her head, high up in the blue, a lark that was soaring towards' the same gauzy cloud was singing, as if in rivalry. As I slowly approached the child, I could see by her forehead, which, in the sunshine seemed like a globe of pearl, and especially by her complexion, that she was uncommonly lovely. Her eyes, which at one moment seemed blue-gray, at another violet, were shaded by long black lashes, curving backward in a most peculiar way, and these matched in hue her eyebrows, and the tresses that were tossed about her tender throat and were quivering in the sunlight. All this I did not take in at once;for at first I could see nothing but those quivering, glittering, changeful eyes turned up into my face.Gradually the other features, especially the sensitive full-lipped mouth, grew upon me as I stood silently gazing. Here seemed to me a more perfect beauty than had ever come to me in my loveliest dreams of beauty.Yet it was not her beauty so much as the look she gave me that fascinated me, melted me 小女孩

At Home in the Savanna
My name is Dopal.I’m eleven years old and I live in Tanzania in the heart of the African Savanna.I’m a Masai.Masais are nomads who travel all over with their animals, looking for pasture. Our most wonderful and valuable possession is our herd.I’ve never been to school. My father teaches me everything I have to know.He explains to me how to lead our herd.My own animals are in the middle of the herd.Every Masai gets a cow, a lamb, and a goat the day he’s born. Our most beautiful goat belongs to my father. Her name is Olliye.I love her, even though she’s not always easy to handle.Olliye is going to have a baby very soon.My father knows Olliye is my favorite, but he always reminds me that we must love all our animals as if they were our children. My father knows all about nature. He shows me some cheetah tracks. Our herds have lots of predators like hyenas, lions, and leopards.A Masai has to be ready to risk his life for his herd.A shepherd must always listen for different sounds and watch to make sure the animals walking behind don’t get lost All Masais have their own animals, even the girls. They become their dowry when they get married. The animals are also used in trade for food in the market. My people have always been shepherds. We’re not farmers. For us, the earth is sacred, and we mustn’t hurt it by planting things.Like all boys, I dream of becoming a warrior.A warrior has to be strong and intelligent. He’s the one who defends the herd against wild beasts. He sometimes travels long distances to bring back lost animals, and he also watches over our safety.Masais go through three stages: childhood, warrior, and elder.I’ll be a warrior from thirteen to twenty-five years old, before I become an elder like my father. Then I can get married and have children.
Beliefs 信念
Your beliefs are very powerful and have the power to create or to destroy your life.In most cases, whatever you believe is what you will become. If you believe that you are loser, that you never get a break in life, that you can’t accomplish anything, these things will be your reality.Believe that you are unlimited, that you can do anything you commit to doing, and when you do, your accomplishments will know no bounds. You control your beliefs, and that is how you ultimately control of your life. This is a very important point. So how do you develop beliefs that will empower you?
Many of our beliefs come from our environment, the world we live in on a daily basis. If your environment is limiting your beliefs, then work very hard on changing it.If you are constantly around people who are negative and limiting, find other people to hang out with.Get around positive, successful people.Beliefs also come from past experiences That is why it is so important to experience success on a regular basis.Set small, achievable goals, and then try your best to reach them.“I will finish this project by early afternoon.”
”I will make six calls on the phone in the next hour.”
“I will exercise for 20 minutes tonight.”
When you start to experience success, then you start to believe in success, and that leads to more and bigger successes.Beliefs come from knowledge. The more you learn, the more things you will know to be possible.Always take advantage of opportunities to learn something new.It will bring new possibilities into your beliefs and your life. Most importantly, you can develop new beliefs by setting and visualizing goals for your life.Define your goals clearly and with precision. Then, in your mind, see yourself achieving them in all of their sensory details.Mentally live the experience, see the sights, hear the sounds, smell the aroma, feel the feelings.Your nurtured beliefs will lead you to their reality.
Growing Roots
When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Dr.Gibbs.He didn’t look like any doctor I’d ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard.I remember him as someone who was a lot nicer than circumstances warranted. When Dr.Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. His house sat on ten acres, and his life’s goal was to make it a forest. The good doctor had some interesting theories concerning plant husbandry. He came from the “No pain, no gain” school of horticulture. He never watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom.Once I asked why.He said that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you water them, each successive tree generation will grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things rough for them and weed out the weenie trees early on.He talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of moisture.I took him to mean that deep roots were to be treasured So he never watered his trees. He’d plant an oak and, instead of watering it every morning, he’d beat it with a rolled-up newspaper.Smack!Slap!Pow!I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.Dr.Gibbs went to glory a couple of years after I left home.Every now and again, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I’d watched him plant some twenty-five years ago. They’re granite strong now.Big and robust. Those trees wake up in the morning and beat their chests and drink their coffee black.I planted a couple of trees a few years back.Carried water to them for a solid summer.Sprayed them.Prayed over them. The whole nine yards. Two years of coddling has resulted in trees that expect to be waited on hand and foot.Whenever a cold wind blows in, they tremble and chatter their branches.Sissy trees.Funny things about those trees of Dr.Gibbs’.Adversity and deprivation seemed to benefit them in ways comfort and ease never could.Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons.I stand over them and watch their little bodies, the rising and falling of life within.I often pray for them.Mostly I pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I’ve been thinking that it’s time to change my prayer
This change has to do with the inevitability of cold winds that hit us at the core.I know my children are going to encounter hardship, and I’m praying they won’t be naive. There’s always a cold wind blowing somewhere. So I’m changing my prayer.Because life is tough, whether we want it to be or not.Too many times we pray for ease, but that’s a prayer seldom met. What we need to do is pray for roots that reach deep into the Eternal, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won’t be swept asunder.
Hold Fast to Dreams
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow How Germans See Others
The Germans generally adore England and have suffered in the past from unrequited love.England used to be the ultimate role model with its amazingly advanced political, social, industrial and technological achievements. The Germans regard the English as being very nice and mostly harmless, almost German. They admire Americans for the(un-German)easygoing pragmatism and dislike them for their un-German superficiality. For the Germans, the United States is the headmaster in the school of nations, and accord due respect if not always affection.Germans are strong believers in authority. If you know how to obey, then you can also be a master runs the refrain. With the Italian Germans have a close understanding because they have so much history in common.Through wars, invasion and other forms of tourism, a deep and lasting friendship has been established.Italian art treasures, food and beaches are thoroughly appreciated. There is also a connection arising from the fact that Italy and Germany both achieved nationhood in the last century, and are still not entirely sure that this was a good thing The French are admired for their sophisticated civilization, and pitied for their inferior culture. The French may have higher spirits, but the Germans have deeper souls.Despite this, Francophilia is widespread among Germans, especially those living close to the French border.Like a wistful child looking over the garden fence, Germans envy Mediterranean people for more relaxed attitudes, cultural heritage and warm climate. But only when they are on holiday. The only people to whom the Germans readily concede unquestioned superiority of Teutonic virtues are the Swiss. No German would argue their supremacy in the fields of order, punctuality, diligence, cleanliness and thoroughness. They have never been to war with the Swiss. If experience has taught them one thing, it is that there is not future outside the community of nations. No other nation has a stronger sense of the importance of getting along with others.Tolerance is not only a virtue, It’s a duty.
If I Die Today
If I die today, how would I feel about my life?
Life is fragile.A good friend of mine called me today and shared that his girlfriend”s brother passed away last night. He was married, with two young children. He died of a massive heart attack in the middle of the night. And he was only 44 years old.“It could never happen to me,” we think.“I”m too young to die.“ But how young is ”too young to die?“
We really don”t know how many days or years we will live.An accident, such as by plane, automobile, or other mishap could claim our life.Or perhaps, an unusual illness.Or a vital organ could fail.So what would we say if our life were to end today? Would we be satisfied? Would we know that we had lived our life fully, on purpose? Could we feel we “did it right?”
It is hard question to answer.I recently had a cousin pass away from cancer.I don“t know how she would have answered this question. But I”m 99% positive she wasn“t ”ready“ to go.Not with two little ones and a loving huaband and so much life ahead of her(she was 35 years old).If we live our life completely every day, we still may not be thrilled with the thought of death. However, death is really only a passing from one physical body to our more complete spiritual one(not that our spirit isn”t the core essence of who we are now). Are there things we can be doing better? Are there people we can love better? Can we live our aspirations today? If we know the answer, what are we waiting for to make us do it? Death? Life is fragile. Now is the time to live fully and bless those friends and family who grace us with their love.
Kiss of Reality
To talk of illusions, aren’t they great? Illusion or day dreaming help us to think of what we want to become in life.We literally see how life revolves us in that position. It's an entirely different world of pleasure, comfort and imagination. Most of our day dreaming or illusions make us more and more egocentric. The word ego means self.Hence by dreaming and visualization we become self-centered.We never realize that things we dream of can be achieved by us by programming ourselves to work for it.But somehow the pleasure of dreaming ourselves as someone important takes us away from the realistic approach to achieve that level of self-satisfaction and self-accomplishment.This leads to an increase in the frustration levels of our mind. Why frustrations? This is because what we are, and what we dream of are totally different We raise ourselves to a very high pedestal and we see that we are not able to live up to our expectations. And when this happens, we become mentally restless. The vital solution that will dissolve all our problems is to make up our minds to get realistic. This approach will make us come in terms with reality. And there is no better road to self-improvement rather than the path of reality. When you gauge yourself, you subconsciously make two columns in your mind. One consists of the things that you are good at , and the other consists of the areas where you can improve. And believe it will boost us to work on our weak areas and strengthen them.Fortifying your weak areas will harness your conscience and improve you convert would be to must be.And when something must happen, it always happens. This new you will improve you for the better and increase your levels of self-esteem.It will change your outlook to things.I would like to type the thoughts that have just sprung up in my mind.Read and ponder on each line.I admit that it's a sad aim at poetry, but I am allowing my mind to control my typing If you want to achieve what you couldn't have
If you want to be what you want to be
If you want to do what you can do,but aren't doing
If there is a place, you want to be
but haven't been
You will get there, become the one and do it
Cos its all in a state of mind.Make up your mind and rule the stars.Control your mind and make your fate.I hope this conveys my thoughts with clarity. So it's some advice and suggestion to all those eyeballs running through this part of the book, to keep their heads on their shoulders without using heads and shoulders! And believe me guys;you guys have it in you to make it big.Just don't let that teenage iconoclastic habit rule over sense.

Knowledge is one thing, virtue is another;good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justness of view faith.Philosophy, however enlightened, however profound, gives no command over the passions, no influential motives, no vivifying principles.Liberal Education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentlemen. It is well to be a gentleman, it is well to have a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, a candid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life--these are the connatural qualities of a large knowledge;they are the objects of a university.I am advocating, I shall illustrate and insist upon them. But still, I repeat, they are no guarantee for sanctity or even for conscientiousness, and they may attach to the man of the world, to the profligate, to the heartless, pleasant, alas, and attractive as he shows when decked out in them.Taken by themselves, they do but seem to be what they are not;they look like virtue at a distance, but they are detected by close observers and in the long run;and hence it is that they are popularly accused of pretense and hypocrisy;not, I repeat, from their own fault, but because their professors and their admirers persist in taking them for what they are not, and are officious in arrogating for them a praise to which they have no claim.Quarry the granite rock with razors, or moor the vessel with a thread of silk, then may you hope with such keen and delicate instruments as human knowledge and human reason to contend against those giants, the passion and the pride of man.
On Changes
Change is the only absolute
in the world,the only thing
that you can depend on.Nothing stays the same.Tomorrow will come, bringing with it
new beginnings and sometimes
unexpected endings. You can hold on to the past
and get left in the dust;
or, you can choose to
jump on the ride of life
and live a new adventure
with perseverance
and an open mind.
你可以抓住過去,蒙受遺棄;
Self-confidence is essential to success
Nothing succeeds like confidence. When you are truly and justifiably confident, it radiates from you like sunlight, and attracts success to you like a magnet. It“s so important to believe in yourself.Believe that you can do it under any circumstances, because if you believe you can, then you really will. That belief just keeps you searching for answers, and then pretty soon you will get them.Confidence is more than an attitude. It comes from knowing exactly where you are going, exactly how you are going to get there. It comes from acting with integrity and confidence. It comes from a strong sense of purpose. It comes from a strong commitment to take responsibility, rather than just let life happen. One way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear and get a record of successful experience behind you.Confidence is compassionate and understanding. It is not arrogant.Arrogance is born out of fear and insecurity, confidence comes from strength and integrity.Confidence is not just believing you can do it.Confidence is knowing you can do it.Knowing that you are capable of accomplishing anything you want, and live your life with confidence.Anything can be achieved through focused, determined effort, commitment and self-confidence.If your life is not what you want it to be, you have the power to change it, and you must make the changes on a moment by moment basis.Live your priorities, live with your goals and your plan of action, live each moment with your priorities in mind.Act with your own purpose, and you will have the life you want
The first snow
The first snow came. How beautiful it was, falling so silently all day long, all night long, on the mountains, on the meadows, on the roofs of the living, on the graves of the dead! All white save the river, that marked its course by a winding black line across the landscape;and the leafless trees, that against the leaden sky now revealed more fully the wonderful beauty and intricacies of their branches. What silence, too, came with the snow, and what seclusion!
Every sound was muffled, every noise changed to something soft and musical. No more tramping hoofs, no more rattling wheels!Only the chiming of sleigh-bells, beating as swift and merrily as the hearts of children.
The value of time
To realize the value of one year:
Ask a student who has failed a final exam.To realize the value of one month:
Ask a mother who has given birth to a premature baby.To realize the value of one week:
Ask an editor of a weekly newspaper. To realize the value of one hour:
Ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.To realize the value of one minute:
Ask a person who has missed the train, bus or plane. To realize the value of one second:
Ask a person who has survived an accident. To realize the value of one millisecond:
Ask the person who has won a silver medal in the Olympics.Time waits for no one.Treasure every moment you have.

Out of the question is possible
When Henry ford decided to produce his famous v-8 motor, he chose to build an engine with the entire eight cylinders cast in one block, and instructed his engineers to produce a design in one for the engine. The design was placed on paper, but the engineers agreed, to a man, that it was simply impossible to cast an eight-cylinder engine-block in one piece.Ford said, “Produce it anyway.”
“But,” they replied, “It’s impossible!”
“Go ahead.” Ford commanded, “And stay on the job until you succeed, no matter how much time is required.”
The engineers went ahead. There was nothing else for them to do, if they were to remain on the ford staff.Six months passed and nothing happened.Another six months passed, and still nothing happened. The engineers tried every conceivable plan to carry out the orders, but the thing seemed out of the question: “impossible!”[
At the end of the year ford checked with his engineers, and again they informed him they had found no way to carry out his orders.“go right head,” said ford, “I want it, and I’ll have it.”
They went ahead, and then, as if by a stroke of magic, the secret was discovered. The ford determination had won once more!
This story may not be described with minute accuracy, but the sum and substance of it is correct.Deduce from it, you who wish to think and grow rich, the secret of the ford millions, if you can. You’ll not have to look very far.Henry ford was successful, because he understood and applied the principles of success. One of these is desire: knowing out the lines in which the secret of his stupendous achievement have been described. If you can do this, if you can lay your finger on the particular group of principles which made Henry ford rich, you can equal his achievements in almost any calling for which you are suited.“不可能”就是“可能”
Be yourself, never give up
The adolescent girl from Tennessee is standing on the stage of a drama summer camp in upstate New York. It's a beautiful day.But the girl doesn't feel beautiful. She's not the leggy, glamorous Hollywood type.In fact, she describes herself as dorky.Since she was six years old, Reese Witherspoon has wanted to be a country singer. And Dolly Parton is her idol. But this flat-chested wisp of a girl is no Dolly Parton.Nevertheless, all of this summer she's been acting, dancing and singing---giving it her best.Play to your strengths. If you're going to make it in this business, it's not going to be on sexy—that's not who you are.Better focus on what you're good at.Celebrate yourself.Despite three years of lessons, at the end of camp her coaches tell her to forget about singing. They suggest she think about another career. If Reese did have talent, it was hiding under her skinny, mousy frame and her Coke-bottle glasses.Still, she takes their words to heart. After all, why shouldn't she believe the professionals? But back at home in Nashville, her mother — a funny, happy, upbeat person — wouldn't let her mope. Her father, a physician, encouraged her to achieve in school. So she worked hard at everything and was accepted at Stanford University. And at age 19, she got a part in a low-budget movie called “Freeway”.That led to a substantial role in the movie “Pleasantville”.But her big break came with “Legally Blonde”.Well, she decided, ”if you can't sing and you aren't glamorous, play to your strengths. If you're going to make it in this business, it's not going to be on sexy — that's not who you are.Better focus on what you've good at.Celebrate yourself.“ And then came the offer that took her back to her Nashville roots — playing the wife of tormented country star Johnny Cash.A singing role. All of a sudden the old fears were back. She was so nervous on the set, a reporter wrote, she ”kept a sick bucket“ nearby and admitted she ”would go backstage after a singing scene and shake.“ But she didn't give up on the movie or herself The humor and drive she learned at home overcame the self-doubt learned on that summer stage. She spent 6 months taking singing lessons again. She learned to play the Autoharp. And the hard work built up her confidence.Last March, Reese Witherspoon walked up on another stage, the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, and accepted the Oscar as Best Actress for her heartbreaking, heartwarming singing role as June Carter Cash in “Walk the Line”.Finally, as you read the accounts of Reese Witherspoon, consider the obstacles she met.The lesson of the story, I suppose, is that instead of making dozen excuses why you can not realize your dreams, think about this story, just hold on to your dream and never give up.
Bill Gates’8 Rules to Students
1.Life is not fair, get used to it.2.The world won't care about your self-esteem.The world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself.3.You will not make 4,000 dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone, until you earn both.4.If you think your teacher is tough ,wait till you get a boss.He doesn't have tenure.5.If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about our mistakes, learn from them.6.Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are.So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' genernation , try ”delousing" the closet in your own room.7.Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not.In some schools they have abolished failing grades;they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to anything in real life 8.Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself.Do that on your own time.
1.self-esteem n.
If he failed, his self-esteem would suffer.
He is promised a long tenure of office.
3.parasite n.
The mistletoe plant is a parasite on trees.
4.delouse [di:'laus] v. Feed Your Mind
If you are hungry, what do you do? Grab a piece of your favorite meal and stay quiet after that? Just like your stomach, even your mind is hungry. But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about your dream lover, favorite star and many such absurd things. So it silently began to heed to your needs and never let itself grow. When mind looses its freedom to grow, creativity gets a full stop. This is the aftermath of our own karma of using our brain for thinking of not-so-worthy things.Hunger of the mind can be actually satiated through extensive reading. Now why reading and not watching TV? Because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from the childhood.Just like that to develop other aspects of our life, we have to take help of reading. You have innumerable number of books in this world which will answer all your “How to?” questions.Once you read a book, you just don't run your eyes through the lines, but even your mind decodes it and explains it to you.The interesting part of the book is stored in your mind as a seed. Now this seed is unknowingly used by you in your future to develop new ideas. The same seed if used many times, can help you link and relate a lot of things, of which you would have never thought of in your wildest dreams! This is nothing but creativity.More the number of books you read, your mind will open up like never before 別讓你的腦子挨餓

(Eddie Lampert)
例如「Which wine do you recommend with this dish?」(這道菜你建議搭配哪種酒呢?)4.
例如表示認(rèn)同時,可回答:「I’m glad to hear it.」(很高興聽到如此)「You made it!」(你做到了?。 5.練習(xí)與「get」「have」相關(guān)的基礎(chǔ)句子
