Fellow citizens: For eight years, it has been my honor to serve as your president. The first decade of this new century has been a period of consequence — a time set apart.Tonight, with a thankful heart, I have asked for a final opportunity to share some thoughts on the journey that we have traveled together, and the future of our nation.Five days from now, the world will witness the vitality of American democracy. In a tradition dating back to our founding, the presidency will pass to a successor chosen by you, the American people.Standing on the steps of the Capitol will be a man whose history reflects the enduring promise of our land. This is a moment of hope and pride for our whole nation. And I join all Americans in offering best wishes to President-elect Obama, his wife Michelle, and their two beautiful girls.Tonight I am filled with gratitude — to Vice President Cheney and members of my administration;to Laura, who brought joy to this house and love to my life;to our wonderful daughters, Barbara and Jenna;to my parents, whose examples have provided strength for a lifetime. And above all, I thank the American people for the trust you have given me.I thank you for the prayers that have lifted my spirits. And I thank you for the countless acts of courage, generosity and grace that I have witnessed these past eight years. This evening, my thoughts return to the first night I addressed you from this house — September the 11th, 2001.That morning, terrorists took nearly 3,000 lives in the worst attack on America since Pearl Harbor.I remember standing in the rubble of the World Trade Center three days later, surrounded by rescuers who had been working around the clock.I remember talking to brave souls who charged through smoke-filled corridors at the Pentagon, and to husbands and wives whose loved ones became heroes aboard Flight 93.I remember Arlene Howard, who gave me her fallen son's police shield as a reminder of all that was lost. And I still carry his badge. As the years passed, most Americans were able to return to life much as it had been before 9/11.But I never did.Every morning, I received a briefing on the threats to our nation.I vowed to do everything in my power to keep us safe.Over the past seven years, a new Department of Homeland Security has been created. The military, the intelligence community and the FBI have been transformed. Our nation is equipped with new tools to monitor the terrorists' movements, freeze their finances and break up their plots. And with strong allies at our side, we have taken the fight to the terrorists and those who support them.Afghanistan has gone from a nation where the Taliban harbored al-Qaida and stoned women in the streets to a young democracy that is fighting terror and encouraging girls to go to school.Iraq has gone from a brutal dictatorship and a sworn enemy of America to an Arab democracy at the heart of the Middle East and a friend of the United States. There is legitimate debate about many of these decisions. But there can be little debate about the results.America has gone more than seven years without another terrorist attack on our soil. This is a tribute to those who toil night and day to keep us safe — law enforcement officers, intelligence analysts, homeland security and diplomatic personnel, and the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Our nation is blessed to have citizens who volunteer to defend us in this time of danger.I have cherished meeting these selfless patriots and their families. And America owes you a debt of gratitude. And to all our men and women in uniform listening tonight: There has been no higher honor than serving as your commander in chief. The battles waged by our troops are part of a broader struggle between two dramatically different systems.Under one, a small band of fanatics demands total obedience to an oppressive ideology, condemns women to subservience and marks unbelievers for murder. The other system is based on the conviction that freedom is the universal gift of Almighty God, and that liberty and justice light the path to peace. This is the belief that gave birth to our nation. And in the long run, advancing this belief is the only practical way to protect our citizens. When people live in freedom, they do not willingly choose leaders who pursue campaigns of terror. When people have hope in the future, they will not cede their lives to violence and extremism. So around the world, America is promoting human liberty, human rights and human dignity. We're standing with dissidents and young democracies, providing AIDS medicine to dying patients — to bring dying patients back to life, and sparing mothers and babies from malaria. And this great republic born alone in liberty is leading the world toward a new age when freedom belongs to all nations. For eight years, we've also strived to expand opportunity and hope here at home.Across our country, students are rising to meet higher standards in public schools.A new Medicare prescription drug benefit is bringing peace of mind to seniors and the disabled.Every taxpayer pays lower income taxes. The addicted and suffering are finding new hope through faith-based programs.Vulnerable human life is better protected.Funding for our veterans has nearly doubled.America's air and water and lands are measurably cleaner. And the federal bench includes wise new members like Justice Sam Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts. When challenges to our prosperity emerged, we rose to meet them.Facing the prospect of a financial collapse, we took decisive measures to safeguard our economy. These are very tough times for hardworking families, but the toll would be far worse if we had not acted. All Americans are in this together. And together, with determination and hard work, we will restore our economy to the path of growth. We will show the world once again the resilience of America's free enterprise system.Like all who have held this office before me, I have experienced setbacks. There are things I would do differently if given the chance.Yet I've always acted with the best interests of our country in mind.I have followed my conscience and done what I thought was right. You may not agree with some of the tough decisions I have made. But I hope you can agree that I was willing to make the tough decisions. The decades ahead will bring more hard choices for our country, and there are some guiding principles that should shape our course. While our nation is safer than it was seven years ago, the gravest threat to our people remains another terrorist attack. Our enemies are patient, and determined to strike again.America did nothing to seek or deserve this conflict. But we have been given solemn responsibilities, and we must meet them.We must resist complacency. We must keep our resolve. And we must never let down our guard. At the same time, we must continue to engage the world with confidence and clear purpose. In the face of threats from abroad, it can be tempting to seek comfort by turning inward. But we must reject isolationism and its companion, protectionism.Retreating behind our borders would only invite danger. In the 21st century, security and prosperity at home depend on the expansion of liberty abroad. If America does not lead the cause of freedom, that cause will not be led.As we address these challenges — and others we cannot foresee tonight — America must maintain our moral clarity.I've often spoken to you about good and evil, and this has made some uncomfortable. But good and evil are present in this world, and between the two of them there can be no compromise.Murdering the innocent to advance an ideology is wrong every time, everywhere.Freeing people from oppression and despair is eternally right. This nation must continue to speak out for justice and truth. We must always be willing to act in their defense — and to advance the cause of peace.President Thomas Jefferson once wrote, “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.” As I leave the house he occupied two centuries ago, I share that optimism.America is a young country, full of vitality, constantly growing and renewing itself. And even in the toughest times, we lift our eyes to the broad horizon ahead.I have confidence in the promise of America because I know the character of our people. This is a nation that inspires immigrants to risk everything for the dream of freedom. This is a nation where citizens show calm in times of danger and compassion in the face of suffering. We see examples of America's character all around us.And Laura and I have invited some of them to join us in the White House this evening. We see America's character in Dr.Tony Rehcasner, a principal who opened a new charter school from the ruins of Hurricane Katrina. We see it in Julio Medina, a former inmate who leads a faith-based program to help prisoners returning to society. We've seen it in Staff Sgt.Aubrey McDade, who charged into an ambush in Iraq and rescued three of his fellow Marines. We see America's character in Bill Krissoff — a surgeon from California. His son, Nathan — a Marine — gave his life in Iraq. When I met Dr.Krissoff and his family, he delivered some surprising news: He told me he wanted to join the Navy Medical Corps in honor of his son. This good man was 60 years old — 18 years above the age limit. But his petition for a waiver was granted, and for the past year he has trained in battlefield medicine.Lieutenant Commander Krissoff could not be here tonight, because he will soon deploy to Iraq, where he will help save America's wounded warriors — and uphold the legacy of his fallen son.In citizens like these, we see the best of our country — resilient and hopeful, caring and strong. These virtues give me an unshakable faith in America. We have faced danger and trial, and there's more ahead. But with the courage of our people and confidence in our ideals, this great nation will never tire, never falter, and never fail.It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as your president. There have been good days and tough days. But every day I have been inspired by the greatness of our country, and uplifted by the goodness of our people.I have been blessed to represent this nation we love. And I will always be honored to carry a title that means more to me than any other — citizen of the United States of America. And so, my fellow Americans, for the final time: Good night.May God bless this house and our next president. And may God bless you and our wonderful country.Thank you.
THE PRESIDENT: Fellow citizens: For eight years, it has been my honor to serve as your President. The first decade of this new century has been a period of consequence — a time set apart.Tonight, with a thankful heart, I have asked for a final opportunity to share some thoughts on the journey that we have traveled together, and the future of our nation.

Five days from now, the world will witness the vitality of American democracy. In a tradition dating back to our founding, the presidency will pass to a successor chosen by you, the American people.Standing on the steps of the Capitol will be a man whose history reflects the enduring promise of our land. This is a moment of hope and pride for our whole nation. And I join all Americans in offering best wishes to President-Elect Obama, his wife Michelle, and their two beautiful girls.
vitality: the property of being able to survive and grow 活力
Tonight I am filled with gratitude — to Vice President Cheney and members of my administration;to Laura, who brought joy to this house and love to my life;to our wonderful daughters, Barbara and Jenna;to my parents, whose examples have provided strength for a lifetime. And above all, I thank the American people for the trust you have given me.I thank you for the prayers that have lifted my spirits. And I thank you for the countless acts of courage, generosity, and grace that I have witnessed these past eight years.
generosity [,d?en?'r?s?ti]: acting generously慷慨,大方 grace: polite and pleasant behaviour寬容;友好;善意
This evening, my thoughts return to the first night I addressed you from this house — September the 11th, 2001.That morning, terrorists took nearly 3,000 lives in the worst attack on America since Pearl Harbor.I remember standing in the rubble of the World Trade Center three days later, surrounded by rescuers who had been working around the clock.
rubble ['r?bl]: the remains of something that has been destroyed or broken up瓦礫
I remember talking to brave souls who charged through smoke-filled corridors at the Pentagon, and to husbands and wives whose loved ones became heroes aboard Flight 93.I remember Arlene Howard, who gave me her fallen son’s police shield as a reminder of all that was lost. And I still carry his badge.
fallen ['f?:l?n]: killed in battle死去的;陣亡的
shield [?i:ld]: a piece of equipment made of strong plastic, used by the police to protect themselves against angry crowds [= riot shield](警察驅(qū)散**群眾時用的)防暴盾牌
As the years passed, most Americans were able to return to life much as it had been before 9/11.But I never did.Every morning, I received a briefing on the threats to our nation.I vowed to do everything in my power to keep us safe.
Over the past seven years, a new Department of Homeland Security has been created. The military, the intelligence community, and the FBI have been transformed. Our nation is equipped with new tools to monitor the terrorists’ movements, freeze their finances, and break up their plots. And with strong allies at our side, we have taken the fight to the terrorists and those who support them.
Afghanistan has gone from a nation where the Taliban harbored al Qaeda and stoned women in the streets to a young democracy that is fighting terror and encouraging girls to go to school.Iraq has gone from a brutal dictatorship and a sworn enemy of America to an Arab democracy at the heart of the Middle East and a friend of the United States.
There is legitimate debate about many of these decisions. But there can be little debate about the results.America has gone more than seven years without another terrorist attack on our soil. This is a tribute to those who toil night and day to keep us safe — law enforcement officers, intelligence analysts, homeland security and diplomatic personnel, and the men and women of the United States Armed Forces.
toil [t?il]: work hard辛苦工作
Our nation is blessed to have citizens who volunteer to defend us in this time of danger.I have cherished meeting these selfless patriots and their families. And America owes you a debt of gratitude. And to all our men and women in uniform listening tonight: There has been no higher honor than serving as your Commander-in-Chief.
blessed ['blesid]: highly favored or fortunate幸福的,幸運的
The battles waged by our troops are part of a broader struggle between two dramatically different systems.Under one, a small band of fanatics demands total obedience to an oppressive ideology, condemns women to subservience, and marks unbelievers for murder. The other system is based on the conviction that freedom is the universal gift of Almighty God, and that liberty and justice light the path to peace.
band of [b?nd] : a group of people formed because of a common belief or purpose
fanatic [f?'n?tik]: someone who has extreme political or religious ideas and is often dangerous [= extremist](對宗教、政治等)狂熱者,盲信者
condemn [k?n'dem]: compel or force into a particular state or activity使處于(某種特定地位或境界)subservience [s?b's?:vi?ns]: in a subservient state屈從,恭順 conviction [k?n'vik??n]: an unshakable belief in something without need for proof or evidence深信,確信,堅強信念
This is the belief that gave birth to our nation. And in the long run, advancing this belief is the only practical way to protect our citizens. When people live in freedom, they do not willingly choose leaders who pursue campaigns of terror. When people have hope in the future, they will not cede their lives to violence and extremism.
cede [si:d]: to give something such as an area of land or a right to a country or person, especially when you are forced to放棄
So around the world, America is promoting human liberty, human rights, and human dignity. We’re standing with dissidents and young democracies, providing AIDS medicine to dying patients — to bring dying patients back to life, and sparing mothers and babies from malaria. And this great republic born alone in liberty is leading the world toward a new age when freedom belongs to all nations.
dissident['disid?nt]: someone who publicly criticizes the government in a country where this is punished持不同政見者

We will show the world once again the resilience of America’s free enterprise system. toll: a very bad effect that something has on something or someone over a long period of time損失;代價;犧牲

Like all who have held this office before me, I have experienced setbacks. There are things I would do differently if given the chance.Yet I’ve always acted with the best interests of our country in mind.I have followed my conscience and done what I thought was right.

If America does not lead the cause of freedom, that cause will not be led.

As we address these challenges — and others we cannot foresee tonight — America must maintain our moral clarity.I’ve often spoken to you about good and evil, and this has made some uncomfortable. But good and evil are present in this world, and between the two of them there can be no compromise.Murdering the innocent to advance an ideology is wrong every time, everywhere.

Farewell Address By The President to the Nation
My fellow citizens, tonight is my last opportunity to speak to you from the Oval Office as your
president.a I am profoundly grateful to you for twice giving me the honor to serve, to work for you and with you to prepare our nation for 21st century. And I'm grateful to Vice President Gore, to my Cabinet secretaries, and to all those who have served with me for the last eight years. This has been a time of dramatic transformation, and you have risen to have every new challenge. You have made our social fabric stronger, our families healthier and safer, our people more prosperous. You, the American people, have made our pessage into the global information age an era of great American renewal. In all the work I have done as president, every dicision I have made, every executive action I have taken, every bill I have proposed and signed, I've try to give all Americans the tools and conditions to build the future of our dreams, in a good society, with a strong economy, a cleaner enviroment, and a freer, safer, more prosperous world.I have steered my course by our enduring values.Opportunity for all.Reponsibility from all.A community of all Americans.I have sought to give America a new kind of goverment, smaller, more modern, more effective, full of iders and policies appropriate to this new time, always putting people first, always focusing on the future.Working together, America has done well. Our economy is breaking records, with more than 22 million new jobs, the lowest unemployment in 30 years, the highest home ownership ever, the longest expansion in history. Our families and communities are stronger.Thirty-five million Americans have used family leave low.Eight million have moved off welfare.Crime is at a 25-year low.Over 10 million Americans recieve more college aid, and more people than ever are going to college. Our schools are better-higher standards, greater accountability and larger invistments have brought higher test scores, and higher graduation rates.More than three million children have health insurance now, and more than 7 million Americans have
been lifted out of poverty.Incomes are rising aross the board. Our air and water are cleaner. Our food and drinking water are safer. And more of our precious land has been preserved, in the continetal United States, than any time in 100 years.I'm very grateful to be able to turn over the reins of leadership to a new president, with America in such a strong position to meet the challenges of the future.Tonight, I want to leave you with three thoughts about our future.First, America must maintain our record of fiscal responsibility.Through our last four budgets, we've turned record deficits to record surpluses, and we've been able to pay down $600 billion of our national debt, on track to be debt free by the end of the decade for the first time since 1835.Staying on that course will bring lower interest rates, greater prosperity and the opportunity to meet our big challenges. If we choose wisely, we can pay down the debt, deal with the retirement of the baby boomers, invest more in our future and provide tax relief.Second, because the world is more connected every day in every way, America's security and prosperity require us to continue to lead in world. At this remarkable moment in history, more people live in freedom than ever before. Our alliances are stronger than ever.People all around the world to look in America to be a force for peace and prospeity, freedom and security. The global economy is giving more of our own people, and billions around the world, the chance to work and live and rise thier families dignity. But the forces of intergration that have greated these good opportunitis also make us more subject to global forces of destruction, to terrorism, organized crime and narcotrfficking, the spread of deadly weapon and disease, the degradation of the global enviroment. The expansion of trade hasn't fully closed the gap between those of us who live on the cutting edge of the global economy and the billions around the world who live on the knife's edge of survival. This global requires more than compassion. It requires action.Global poverty is a powder keg that could be ignety by our indifferece. In his first inaugural address, Thomas Jefferson warned of entangling alliances. But in our times, America cannot and must not disentangle itself from the world. We must work harder to overcome our differences. In our hearts and in our lows, we must traet our people fairness and dignity, regardless of their race, religion, gender or sexual oreintation and regardless of when they arrived in our contry, always moving toward the more perfect union of our founders'dreamd
Hillary Chelsea and I join all Americans in wishing our cery best to the next president, Geoge W.Bush to his family and his administration in meeting these challenges and in leading freedom's march in this new contry. As for me, I'll leave the presidency more idealistic, more full of hope than the day I arrived and more confident than ever that America's best days lie ahead. My days in this office are nearly through, but my days of service, I hope, are not.In the years ahead, I will never hold a position higher or a covenant more scared than that of president of the United States. But there is no title I will wear more proudly than that of citizen.Thank you.God bless you, and God bless America.
President Bush's address 11/9/2001, Tuesday night, After terrorist attacks on New York and Washington Good evening.Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life President Bush's address 11/9/2001, Tuesday night, After terrorist attacks on New York and Washington
Good evening.Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes or in their offices--secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers.Moms and dads.Friends and neighbors.Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror. The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness and a quiet, unyielding anger. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong.A great people has been moved to defend a great nation.Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature, and we responded with the best of America, with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could.Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C., to help with local rescue efforts. Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks. The functions of our government continue without interruption.Federal agencies in Washington which had to be evacuated today are reopening for essential personnel tonight and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business as well. The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts.I've directed the full resources for our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance.America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world and we stand together to win the war against terrorism.Tonight I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me.”
This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace.America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time.None of us will ever forget this day, yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.Thank you.Good night and God bless America.
例如?The victims were in airplanes or in their offices--secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers.Moms and dads.Friends and neighbours.
Moms and dads,每個字只有一個音節(jié),比fathers and mothers更加簡潔。
Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror.
Tonight I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me.”
Euphemism?a power greater than any of us,指的是舉頭三尺的神明,其實用一個God字已可代替,但這里不用God字,因為要留待最后一句才用。
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me.” You當(dāng)然是用大楷,因為指上帝,the valley of the shadow of death是死亡陰影的幽谷。在小說天路歷程The Pilgrim's Progress中,描述了一個基督徒,在尋找永生的旅途上,也路經(jīng)了the valley of the shadow of death。
布什所用的結(jié)句是?None of us will ever forget this day, yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.Thank you.Good night and God bless America. Thank you.Good night and God bless America作結(jié),如此俗套的用語,在這里卻有畫龍點睛的效果。
We go forward to defend freedom. go forward to后面得配一個簡單的動詞,很多香港人不知道forward to充滿機關(guān),如?We look forward to seeing you soon!look forward to后面一定要seeing you soon,因為前面一句forward是go的副詞,后一句look forward to三個字代表一個動詞hope。 We hope to see you soon!
