      Youth

Youth is not a time of life;it's a state of mind;it's not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees;it's a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions;it's the freshness of the deep springs of life.Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for the adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than of 20.Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.Worry, fear ,self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.Whether 60 or 16 ,there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station: so long as it receives message of beauty ,hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cyniciam and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20,but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.Three days to see

All of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live.Sometimes it was as long as a year;sometimes as short as twenty-four hours, but always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed man chose to spend his last days or his last hours.I speak, of course, of free men who have a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.Such stories set up thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings? What happiness should we find in reviewing the past, what regrets?

Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow.Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life.We should live each day with a gentleness, a vigor, and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the epicurean motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry,” most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death. Most of us take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future, when we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it.The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty task, hardly aware of our listless attitude towards life. The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of our faculties and senses.Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight.Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties.Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sound hazily, without concentration, and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we conscious of health until we are ill.I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life.Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight;silence would teach him the joys of sound. Now and then I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see.Recently I was visited by a very good friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed.“Nothing in particular,” she replied.I might have been incredulous had I not been accustomed to such responses, for long ago I became convinced that the seeing see little. How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch.I feel the delicate symmetry of a leaf.I pass my hands lovingly about the smooth skin of a silver birch, or the rough shaggy bark of a pine.In spring I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first sign of awakening Nature after her winter's sleep I feel the delightful, velvety texture of a flower, and discover its remarkable convolutions;and something of the miracle of Nature is revealed to me.Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently in a small tree and feel the happy quiver of a bird in full song.I am delighted to have cool waters of a brook rush through my open fingers. To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug.To me the pageant of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streams through my finger tips.At times my heart cries out with longing to see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight.Yet, those who have eyes apparently see little. The panorama of color and action fill the world is taken for granted. It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light and the gift of sight is used only as mere convenience rather that as a means of adding fullness to life.Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for three days!companionship of books

a man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps;for there is a companionship of books as well as of men;and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.a good book may be among the best of friends.it is the same today that it always was, and it will never change.it is the most patient and cheerful of companions.it does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress.it always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age.men often discover their affinity to each other by the love they have each for a book.the book is a truer and higher bond of union.men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author.they live in him together and he, in them.a good book is often the best urn of a life enshrining the best that life could think out;for the world of a man's life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts.thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters.books possess an essence of immortality.they are by far the most lasting products of human effort.temples and statues decay, but books survive.time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author's minds, ages ago.what was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page.the only effect of time has been to sift out the bad products;for nothing in literature can long survive but what is really good.books introduce us into the best society, they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived.we hear what they said and did;we see them as if they were really alive;we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them;their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were in a measure actors with them in the scenes which they describe. If I rest, I rust

The significant inscription(題字,碑銘)found on an old keywould be an excellent motto for those who are afflicted with the slightest taint of idleness.Even the industrious(勤奮的人)might adopt it with advantage to serve as a reminder that, if one allows his faculties to rest, like the iron in the unused key, they will soon show signs of rust, and ultimately, cannot do the work required of them. Those who would attain the heights reached and kept by great men must keep their faculties polished by constant use, so that they may unlock the doors of knowledge, the gates that guard the entrances to the professions, to science, art, literature, agriculture,-every department of human endeavor.Industry keeps bright the key that opens the treasure of achievemenet. If Hugh Miller, after toiling all day in a quarry, had devoted his evening s to rest and recreation, he would never have become a famous geologist. The celebrated mathematician, Edmund Stone, would never have published a mathematical dictionary, never have found the key to science of mathematics, if he had given his spare moments to idleness.Had the little Scotch lad, Ferguson, allowed the busy brain to go to sleep while he tended sheep on the hillside, instead of calculating the position of the stars by a string of beads, he would never have become a famous astronomer.Labor vanquished all,all 6)overflow with beauty. The power to appreciate beauty not only increases our sources of happinessAlbraham Lincoln

Gettysburg Address Delivered on the 19th Day of November, 1863 Cemetery Hill, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new Nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to theproposition that all men are created equal. Now, we are engaged in a great Civil War, testing whether that Nation, or any nation soconceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war.We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who gave their lives that Nation might live.It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated to the great task remaining before us;that from these honored dead, we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion;that this Nation, under GOD, shall have a new birth of freedom;and that government of the People by the People and for the People shall not perish from the earth."

First Inaugural Address

We observe today not a victory of party but a celebration of freedom.Symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning, signify-ing renewal, as well as change. For I have sworn betbre you, and almighty God, the same solemn oath our forbears prescribed nearly a century and three quarters ago.The worried is very different now for man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty, and all forms of human life. And yet, the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forbears fought are still at issue around the globe. The belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first, revolution.Let the word go forth, from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans, born in this century tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage and unwilling to witness, or permit, the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which.we are committed today at home and around the world.Let every nation know whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty

This much we pledge and more.To those old allies, whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends.United there is little we cannot do, in a host of cooperative ventures.Divided there is little we can do.For we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split us asunder. To those new states whom we welcome to the ranks of the free, we pledge our words that one form of colonial control shall not have passed away merely to be replaced by a far more iron tyranny We sha1l not always expect to tind them supporting our view, but we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom, and to remember that in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside. To those people in the huts and villages of half the globe, struggling to break the bonds of mass misery, we pledge our best efforts to help them help themselves, for whatever period is required, not because the Communists may be doing it, not because we seek their votes, but because it is right. If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it 's cannot save the

few who are rich.To our sister republics south of our border, we offer a special pledge, to convert our good words into, good deeds, in a new alliance for progress to assist, free men and free governments in casting off the chains of poverty But this peaceful revolution of hope cannot become the prey of hostile power s.Let al our neighbors know that we shall join with them to oppose aggression or subversion anywhere ill the Americas. And let every other power know that this hemisphere intends to remain the master of its own house. To that world assembly of sovereign states, the United Nations, our last and best hope in an age age where the instruments of war have far outpaced the instruments of peace, we renew our pledge of support to prevent it from becoming merely a form for invective, to strengthen its shield of the new and the weak, and to enlarge the area in which it's written and run. Finally to those nations who would make themselves our adversary we offer not a pledge, but a request, that both sides begin a new quest for peace, before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self destruction. We dare not tempt them with weakness, for only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt, can we be certain beyond doubt, that they will never be employed. But neither can two great and powerful groups of nation take comfort from our present course, both sides over-burdened by the cost of modern weapons, both rightly alarmed by the steady spread of the deadly atom, and yet both racing to alter that uncertain balance of terror that stays the hand of mankind's final war.So let us begin aneW remembering on both sides that stability is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate.Let both sides explore what problems unite us, instead of belaboring those problems which divide us.Let both sides, for the first time, formulate serious and precise proposals, for the inspection and control of arms, and bring the absolute power to destroy other nations under the absolute control of all nations.Let both sides seek to invoke the wonders of science instead of its terrors.Together, let us explore the stars, conquer the deserts, eradicate disease, tap the ocean depths, and encourage the arts and commerce.Let both sides unite to heed, in all corners of the earth, the command of Isaiah, to rsndo the herrny brrrdens rrnd let the oppressed go hee. And, if a beachhead of cooperation may push back the jungle of suspicion, let both sides join in creating a new endeavor not a new balance of powen but a new world of law, whel-e the strong are just, and the weak secured, and the peace preserved. All this will not be finished in the first one hundrcd days, nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days, nor in the life of this administration, nor even perhaps in our lifietime on this planet. But let us begin. In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than mine, will rest the final success or failure of our cause.Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty The graves of young Americans, who answered the caI1 to service, surround the globe. Now the trumpet summons us again, not as a cal1 to bear arms, though arms we need, not as a call to battle, though in battle we are, but a call to bear the burden of a long, twilight struggle, year in and year out, rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny poverty disease, and war itself

Can we forge against these enemies, a grand and global alliance, north and south, east and west, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort?

In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger.I do not shrink from this responsibility I welcome it.I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people, or any other generation. The energy the faith, the devotion, which we bring to this endeavor, will light our country and all who serve it, and the glow from that fire can truly light the world. And so my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do lbr the iieedom of men. Finally whether you are citizens of A1nerica, or citizens of the world, ask of us here, the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you.Wth a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the Iand we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth, God's work must truly be our own.

Nowadays, going abroad for studies is enjoying a striking popularity among adolescents.Importance should be attached to studying abroad. There are a great many advantages of studying overseas.First and foremost, living and studying abroad offers students a different perspective of the world. On a university campus, international students are likely to encounter their counterparts from various countries and areas and are exposed to diverse ideas and values. What is more, overseas experience is the best opportunity for the real-life use of foreign languages. There is no better opportunity to improve second-language skills than living in the country in which it is spoken.Generally peaking, it is my view that although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful, the payoff is worthwhile. In the first place, in addition to knowledge, overseas students can gain precious experiences that those who stay at home will never have.Furthermore, overseas experience, frustrating and painful as it may be, is conducive to the growth of adolescents.2、就業(yè)

Job hunting has always been a headache for college students.Though many graduates are employed right after graduation, some are not. Most serious of all, some still have no idea where to go working even a long time after graduation. The reasons for this phenomenon are various. On the one hand, a few years ago colleges and universities enrolled so many students in popular majors, such as economy, finance and so on that the number of graduates was greater than the need in the market. On the other hand, most graduates would rather stay in large cities without suitable job to do than go to the country.I reckon this problem can be solved if both colleges and students take measures.First, they should research the market and develop special skills to suit its need.Second, students’ attitude towards employment should be changed. They should go to small cities and country. There they can also give full play to their professional knowledge. In a word, if we pay much attention, the situation can be improved.3、網(wǎng)絡(luò)

In recent years, people are developing an inseparable relationship with Internet. As is known to all, it is convenient for us to click the mouse when surfing on line, either to entertain ourselves or to meet the work’s needs. On the one hand, no one denies that Internet is currently one of the most useful media in our daily life.As a college student, I get on line every day to exchange information through e-mails with my net friends. But on the other hand, a good many people admit that they are too much addicted to Internet to maintain a regular and wholesome lifestyle. Thus, it is necessary for us to use Internet in a reasonable way and restrain from overindulgence. After all,Internet is invented to enrich our life, and to improve the efficiency of our work rather than shackle us with a chain.4、考試

In most colleges and universities the examination is used as a chief means of deciding whether a student succeeds or fails in mastering a particular subject.Although it does the job quite efficiently, its side effects are also enormous. To begin with, examinations lower the standards of teaching.Since teachers are often judged by examination results, they are reduced to training their students in exam techniques. No subjects can be taught successfully merely through being approached with intent to take examinations. In addition, the most undesirable effect is that examinations encourage bad study habits. As the examination score is the only criterion for his academic performance, a student is driven to memorize mechanically rather than to think creatively. In fact, few of us admit that examinations can contribute anything really important to the students’ academic development. If that is the case, why cannot we make a change and devise something more efficient and reliable than examinations?

In my life I have met a great many teachers who are really worth recalling. But perhaps the most unforgettable one I ever know is my English teacher. What frequently brings back memories of my school teacher is his special qualities.First of all, he gave us the greatest gift a teacher can offer—an awakening of a passion for learning. He not only led us to an appreciation of the beauty and perfection of English language and literature, but also aroused our great interest in exploring something deeper in this field.Second, I was attracted by his lively wit.I remember that we students always anticipated his class with great eagerness because his lecture were humorously delivered, never failing to provoke chuckles or loud laughs.Although it is nearly two years since I attended his last class, he is the talk of our old classmates, and I know part of him has already stayed in my heart.6、求學(xué)信

Dear Sir or Madam, I am a Chinese student who wishes to apply for admission into your prestigious university. My plan is to start my course next term, and I would be grateful if you would be kind enough to provide me with certain essential information.First, what qualifications do I need to follow a course of study at your university? I already have a bachelor’s degree from Beijing University, but I wonder if there are any further academic requirements.Second, how much are the tuition fees?

Although I intend to be self-supporting, I would be interested to hear if there are any scholarships available for international students.Third, what is the situation regarding accommodation? I look forward to your reply, and to attending your esteemed institution.Yours sincerely, Li Ming

Dear Snoopy, I am greatly honored to formally invite you to participate in Mr.Guo Jing’s wedding ceremony with Ms.Huang Rong to be held at Beijing Grand Hotel from 8 to 10 p.m.on April 1, 2007.As you are a close friend of us, we would very much like you to attend the celebration and share our joy.The occasion will start at seven o’clock in the evening, with the showing of their wedding ceremony. This will be followed by a dinner party. At around ten, we will hold a small musical soiree, at which a band will perform some works by Bach and Strauss. If you do not have any prior appointment on April 1, we look forward to the pleasure of your company.Yours sincerely, Li Ming

Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to inform you that I wish to move into a new room next semester.I would prefer a single room, as I find the present sharing arrangement inconvenient.I must explain that the reason for my dissatisfaction is my roommate’s inconsiderate behavior. For one thing, his friends are constantly visiting him;for another, he regularly holds noisy parties. In these circumstances, I find it difficult to concentrate on my studies, and I am falling behind in my assignments.I am sure you will agree that the only solution is for me to move into a room of my own. Therefore, I would be grateful if you could find a single room for me, preferably not in the same building but as near to the college campus as possible.Yours sincerely, Li Ming

      (1)

      Just for today

Just for today I will try to live through this day only and not tackle my whole life problem at once.I can do something for twelve hours that would appall me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.Just for today I will be happy. This assumes to be true what Abraham Lincoln said, that “Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

Just for today I will adjust myself to what is, and not try to adjust everything to my own desires.I will take my “l(fā)uck” as it comes.Just for today I will try to strengthen my mind.I will study.I will learn something useful.I will not be a mental loafer.I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.

Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways.I will do somebody a good turn and not get found out: If anybody knows of it, it will not count.I will do at least two things I don’t want to do—just for exercise.I will not show anyone that my feelings are hurt: they may be hurt, but today I will not show it.Just for today I will be agreeable.I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit, and try not to improve or regulate anybody but myself.Just for today I will have a program, I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it.I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision.Just for today I will have a quiet half hour all by myself and relax.During this half hour, sometime, I will try to get a better perspective of my life.Just for today I will be unafraid.Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful, and to believe that as I give to the world, so the world will give to me.

(2)The Poor The poor are very wonderful people. One evening we went out and we picked up four people from the street. And one of them was in a most terrible condition, and I told the sisters: You take care of the other three.I take care of this one who looked worse. So I did for her all that my love can do.I put her in bed, and there was such a beautiful smile on her face. She took hold of my hand as she said just the words “thank you” and she died.I could not help but examine my conscience[良心]before her and I asked what would I say if I was in her place. And my answer was very simple.I would have tried to draw a little attention to myself.I would have said I am hungry, that I am dying, I am cold, I am in pain, or something, but she gave me much more-she gave me her grateful love. And she died with a smile on her face.As did that man whom we picked up from the drain[陰溝、下水道], half eaten with worms, and we brought him to the home.“I have lived like an animal in the street, but I am going to die like an angel, loved and cared for.” And it was so wonderful to see the greatness of that man who could speak like that, who could die like that without blaming anybody, without cursing anybody, without comparing anything.Like an angel-this is the greatness of our people. And that is why we believe what Jesus had said: I was hungry, I was naked, I was homeless, I was unwanted, unloved, uncared for, and you did it to me.

Time Is Money

“Time is money.” This saying means that time is very valuable. But time is more valuable than money. The money we have lost can be gained again, but the time we have wasted cannot be regained. Moreover, sometimes persons can exist without money, but nothing can be done without time, just as no one can live without air.Despite being so valuable, time is often neglected by men.Since time is an invisible thing, men often waste their time unconsciously(無意地).Without anything to do, they may gossip from morning till night.Man can live only at most to about 100 years. It seems fairly long, but in fact it is rather short. We often say “How quickly time flies!” How many things can a man accomplish in such a short period? Hence we should use the valuable time properly to do our work.We will race with it.We will study and work hard.Never waste a little bit of it.Try to Be a Good Student

Perhaps it is the dream of everyone to be a good student at school, but quite a few students feel at a loss on how to make it.In my opinion it is rather easy if you can act on the following points.First of all, make full use of your time and work hard.Don?t put off till tomorrow what should be done today, as time past will never come back. The fast developing society requires adequate knowledge, which presses us to spare no efforts to study.Of course, your hard work will be rewarded one day.Secondly, use your own head and present your point of view.Credulous(輕信的)attitude will only make you take anything for granted. With your own judgment you will be able to tell right from wrong and set up your own theory.Thirdly, set aside enough time for relaxation, entertainment, etc.don?t ignore the harm of all work and no play.Proper sports will build up your body and improve the efficiency of your studying. To be a good student is easier said than done, for it needs a student?s consistent efforts. But nothing is difficult to a man if he puts his heart into it.Natural Resources

Nature has provided us with many kinds of resources.Almost everything we use in our everyday life comes from Nature. The food we eat, the water we drink, the clothes we wear, the concrete and bricks to build our houses, the materials to make bikes we ride, etc.all come originally from Nature.1

People have been making use of these natural supplies for thousands of years. With the development of technology and the increase of the population, the amount and range of materials taken has increased. It is estimated that this tread will continue in the years to come. However, natural resources are not in exhaustible. Some resources are already nearly used up.For example, the end of the world?s fuel is already within sight.Such an essential daily item as water is in short supply in many parts of the world. We can no longer thoughtlessly use the many resources provided by Nature. We must learn to conserve what remains. We Have Only One World

When industries grow, pollution also grows.Today the problem of environment has become more and more important. The world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources too quickly and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we don?t take action immediately, then we will destroy our only world.Man has made great progress in environment protection.Government of many countries has established laws to protect the forest and sea resource and to stop the environmental pollution.Still more measures should be taken to solve the problem.First, we should start by educating the public about the hazards of pollution. The government on its part should also design stricter laws. This is not only for our own generation but also for the future generation to come.It is necessary to protect our nature environment. We must begin now to protect our only world.Make The Best Use of Our Land

It is the land that has been providing us with everything we need for centuries. In other words, almost everything we use daily comes from the land directly or indirectly. The food, clothes, houses, even the books and furniture are all supplied by the land. But the limited land is decreasing at a surprising speed. With the expanding of the cities, the development of the industry and over population, lots of large pieces of good farmland are being turned into residential areas with many houses and apartment buildings, or industrial areas, or warehouses. Therefore some measures must be taken to stop the abusing of our farmland. On the other hand, we should let everyone realize the danger of being short of land. And also we should educate them how to make better use of our land.Health

It is said that we do not properly value a thing until we have lost it.It is only when a friend dies that we find out how much he was to us.So it is with health. When we are young and strong and have good health, we think little about it.It seems natural to us to be always well, and we cannot imagine what it is like to be ill.We are often careless about our health, and without

thinking we spoil our health by bad habits and doing silly things. It is only when we have our good health that we find that it was one of God?s best gifts to us.Health is our most important possession. We should do our best to maintain it.Good health is necessary to happiness and success.People who are in poor health are often pessimistic or depressed. As a rule, bad health means misery and failure. How can we keep our health? Only by knowing and carefully obeying the laws of health.A happy man is a healthy man, and only the healthy man can live a happy life. The desire for good health is universal.Everyone who loves life understands how important health is.First, good health is the guarantee for enjoying life. The only desire of a patient is always to live an ordinary and healthy life.Second, good health establishes a firm foundation for your ambition of the career.Without it, any lofty aspiration turns to be a daydream. Then how to keep fit? Everyone has his own answers to this question, while I think three principal suggestions should be followed. The first one is that a scientific diet should be adopted, which offers the necessities for your body. The second one is that physical exercises must be persisted, especially for the indoor people. The last, but not the least, is that the cheerful mood should be kept.In order to keep fit, I force myself to keep away from the “junk food”, although it usually tastes good, I even form a good habit of doing morning exercises. And the beautiful music and good books always cheer me up.Sports and Games

Sports and games do a lot of good to our health. They can make us strong, prevent us from getting too fat, and keep healthy and fit.Especially they can be of great value to people who work with their brains most of the day, for sports and games give people valuable practice in exercising the body. What?s more, they make our life richer and more colourful. If we do not have a strong body, we will find it hard to do whatever we want.So persons of all ages enjoy watching and taking part in various kinds of sports-track and fields, swimming, skating, football, volleyball and basketball, etc.Sports and games are also very useful in character training. They demand not only physical skills and strength but also courage, endurance, discipline and usually teamwork. For boys and girls, what is learned in the playground often has a deep effect on their character. If each of them learns to work for his team and not for himself on the football field, he will later find it natural to work for the good of his country instead of only for his own benefit.A healthy citizen makes a strong country.Let?s all take part in sports and games.Smoking

It is well known that smoking does harm to the health.Today, so many people still keep smoking, which has drawn wide attention of the society.Smoking has so many disadvantages but no advantages at all.First, the cigarettes with nicotine in them do great harm to the health.Such diseases as pneumonia, lung cancer may be caused or partly caused by them.Furthermore, the bad effects of cigarettes cost the smokers lots of money, which could be spent on other meaningful things.Thirdly, the accidents of fire all over the world every year are mostly caused by the still-burning butts(end). The government has formulated the regulation of no smoking in public places.Yet its result is not so satisfactory. From my point of view, it needs the common efforts of the society. Not only the nonsmokers but the smokers should cooperate on this matter.Live in the City or in the Country

Where do you like to live, in the city or in the country? Most cities are centers of economy, trade, transportation or culture. With the development of economy and society, more and more people have flooded into the cities, which makes the scale of the cities larger and larger.Surely, it is very convenient for shopping, education, business and so on.But it also has many disadvantages: the large population makes it crowded in each corner of the city;the big factories, too many cars, buses and trucks pollute the clean air;too much noise can make people mad.To live in the city, one even can?t get enough room for living. To live in the country is another thing. You can breathe the fresh air cheerfully, own a spacious house with a big backyard, and relax yourself in quietness. But when you want to go shopping, or take your child to school, perhaps you will complain about its inconvenient transportation, its remoteness…I am an ordinary person.I am always longing for the peaceful idyllic(田園詩般的)life of the countryside. Is Failure a Bad Thing?

Failure is a common occurrence(happening)in our daily life.Whatever we do, there are always two possible results: success or failure.Although everyone wants to succeed in what he tries, sometimes failure can?t be avoided.Different people hold different attitudes towards failure. When faced with it, some can stand up to it, draw a useful lesson from it and try their best to fulfill what they are determined to do.Others, however, lose heart and give in.They do nothing but complain about themselves and objective conditions. As a popular saying goes, “Failure teaches success.” In my opinion, what really counts is not the failure itself, but the proper attitude we should take after it.I trust that as long as we keep to what is right and correct what is wrong, that is to say, learn a lesson from failure, we will be certain to succeed. So I am of the opinion that failure is not a bad thing. My Mother's Birthday

The sixth of August was my mother's birthday. My father and I wanted to give her surprising birthday presents. On their mothers' birthday,I know some of my classmates are going to help their mothers with housework;others are going to the shop and buy some flowers for their mothers. In the morning,my father and I went shopping and bought a very nice cake. Then we went to the market and bought some food. When we got home,my father cooked some nice food in the kitchen.I went to my room to make a birthday card.I wanted to say to my mother that I loved her very much. Then I wrote in the card,“I love you,my dear mother!”I put it on her pillow, then we cleaned the room.We felt very tired, but we were very happy. My mother got home.We said,“Happy Birthday!”My mother smiled. We had our supper together. My mother said,“Thank you,my daughter!”

      How happy we were!

      The Value Of Time

I always think there is not enough time. For example,I have just taken a three-day holiday. But when I look back,I just feel that it?s only one day. There goes a proverb,“Time is money”。Now I want to say, time is more precious than money, because when money is spent,we can earn some more again. However, when time is gone or lost, never will it return.Time goes without being noticed. The time for our study and work is usually limited. So I think we must make full use of our time. But it?s a pity that I am always not aware of the importance of time until it?s too late.So I think,I should get into the good habit of saving time because wasting time is equal to wasting one?s life.Do not put off what can be done today till tomorrow!

      Environment

Environmental problems are as big as not for individual country or individual people to address. In other word,we have reached the stage that environmental problems be solved for international view.To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years, many nations have become more aware of the environmental issues each nation faces, such as air and water pollution. The question is,are the environmental issues a national problem or an international problem? It is my belief that the environmental issues have grown to the point of becoming an international problem needing international cooperation to resolve.Because of the differences in environmental policies, resources and technology, international cooperation could provide quicker results and have a greater impact on bringing resolution to environmental problems for nations of differing environmental policies and of lesser resources and technology.By pooling international resources and technology to address the environmental problems, the disadvantaged nations are provided the assistance needed.Otherwise their environmental conditions deteriorate ultimately affecting the resources and environment of the world as a whole.Self introduction

Teachers, good afternoon.Allow me to briefly talk about myself. My name is-Xianning graduated from the south gate of the private secondary schools.Tourism now studying at the school in Hubei Province.Studying hotel management professional.I was a character, cheerful girl,so my hobbies is extensive.Sporty.In my spare time likes playing basketball, table tennis, volleyball, skating. When a person like the Internet at home,or a personal stereo. Not like too long immersed in the world of books, and family members have told me,Laoyijiege is the best.Talking about my family, then I will talk about my family has.Only three people my family,my grandmother, grandfather and my own.My grandfather is a engineer,I am very severely on peacetime, the Church me a lot.Grandma is a very kindly for the elderly, care for my life in every possible way. Therefore,I have no parents in their care, childhood and growth were full of joy.I like this hotel management professional, because I like to live in a strict order of the management environment.I have my professional self-confidence and hope,as long as the efforts will be fruitful, this is my motto.Since I chose this profession,I will follow this path, effort, perseverance path.Thank you teachers.I finished presentation. We have only one earth Dear human being,Have you ever seen such a notice “A black smelly earth with lots of dirty things on it is crying and struggling.”? How terrible it is!Long, long ago,the earth was healthy and beautiful, and it was covered with heavy forest and all kinds of plants. The water in the rivers and lakes and seas was clean and harmless. There were not so many disasters of nature.People lived in harmony with nature,Why has everything changed? Because we human being do a lot of bad things to her.First,We cut down the forests, destroy the grasses, and the water washes away a lot of soil down the rivers into the lakes and seas, making a lot of places flooded and many people killed and making her surface ugly.Secondly,we use lots of chemical powder in the wars,we burn plenty of coals, gas in the factories and cars, making much SO2 and CO2 with the heavy smoke spread in the air,so a lot of people suffer from this terrible air pollution, especially in winter. As a result of this, the temperature of the earth is getting higher and higher. It is dangerous for human being, animals and plants to exist.Thirdly,we pour a lot of waste and poisonous water into the rivers, lakes and seas.Making all kinds of fishes, plants and birds die

Now,if we go on doing bad things to the earth, the earth will die.If the earth died, where would we human being go? The earth is our common living place. So it is everyone?s duty to protect our home —— the earth.Do remember: We have only one earth!

everywhere on the hills. There are so many wild apple trees on the hills. The wild apples are nice to eat.In autumn, the corns under and around the hills are ripe.So we eat them almost every day.In winter, when it snows, all the ground is covered with snow.We can play with snow and sometimes we eat the clean snow with sugar. In my hometown the sky is blue, the air is clean, the water is sweet and the people are very friendly.I love my hometown!

      The Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn is a very important Chinese festival. It falls on the 15th day of August.A few days before the festival, everyone in the family will help to make the house clean and beautiful.Lanterns will be hung in front of the house. On the evening there will be a big family dinner.People who work far away from their homes will try to come back for the union. After dinner, people will light the lanterns which are usually red and round.Children will play with their own toy lanterns happily. At night the moon is usually round and bright.People can enjoy the moon while eating moon-cakes which are the special food for this festival. They can look back on the past and look forward to the future together. It is said that there was a dragon in the sky.The dragon wanted to swallow up the moon.To protect the frighten the dragon away. The Four seasons

A year has four seasons.Every season has three months. The weather of one season is different from that of any other. The life cycles of plants are controlled by the seasons. The first season is spring. The three months in it are March,April and May.During that time we have warm weather and fine days. All plants come to life.Animals wake up from hibernation. It is time for farmers to get ready for their fields. The second season is summer. The three months are June,July and August. The weather is very hot and it often rains.People can go swimming and sightseeing. It is time for all things to grow up.The third season is autumn. The three months are September,October and November. The weather becomes cooler and cooler.Leaves begin to fall to the ground. It is the harvest time for farmers. The fourth season is winter.December,January and February are the three months of that season. The weather is very cold, and most of the plants die at that time.Sometimes it snows.People can enjoy skating and skiing. But winter doesn? t stay with us for a long time, for spring comes again soon.

      Asking for trouble

It must have been about two in the morning when I returned home.I tried to wake up my wife by ringing the door-bell, but she was fast asleep, so I got a ladder from the shed in the garden, put it against the wall, and began climbing towards the bedroom window.I was almost there when a sarcastic voice below said,' I don't think the windows need cleaning at this time of the night.' I looked down and nearly fell off the ladder when I saw a policeman.I immediately regretted answering in the way I did, but I said, 'I enjoy cleaning windows at night.' 'So do I,' answered the policeman in the same tone.'Excuse my interrupting you.I hate to interrupt a man when he's busy working, but would you mind coming with me to the station ?'

'Well, I'd prefer to stay here,' I said.'You see, I've forgotten my key.' 'Your what ?' he called.'My key,' I shouted.'

Fortunately, the shouting woke up my wife who opened the window just as the policeman had started to climb towards me.

In or out ?

Our dog, Rex, used to sit outside our front gate and bark.Every time he wanted to come into the garden he would bark until someone opened the gate.As the neighbours complained of the noise, my husband spent weeks training him to press his paw on the latch to let himself in.Rex soon became an expert at opening the gate. However, when I was going out shopping last week, I noticed him in the garden near the gate. This time he was barking so that someone would let him out!Since then, he has developed another bad habit. As soon as he opens the gate from the outside, he comes into the garden and waits until the gate shuts. Then he sits and barks until someone lets him out. After this he immediately lets himself in and begins barking again.Yesterday my husband removed the gate and Rex got so annoyed we have not seen him since.
