在外貿(mào)實(shí)務(wù)中，采用禮貌用語(yǔ)和委婉措辭即能展現(xiàn)外貿(mào)工作者的人文素質(zhì)，又利于樹(shù)立良好的企業(yè)形象，有助于雙方建立積極的貿(mào)易關(guān)系。在外貿(mào)業(yè)務(wù)的具體環(huán)節(jié)中，英文函電中 措詞的禮貌、客氣主要體現(xiàn)在以下幾個(gè)方面：
1）在收到對(duì)方的詢盤(pán)(inquiry)、發(fā)盤(pán)(offer)、還盤(pán)(counter off)時(shí)，不管能否接受，都應(yīng)以禮貌的語(yǔ)言表達(dá)謝意。例如：Our market survey informs us that you are interested in the import of machinery.We shall be pleased to receive your inquiries for machinery made in Britain.[1]
譯文：根據(jù)市場(chǎng)調(diào)查得知，貴公司對(duì)進(jìn)口機(jī)器頗感興趣，若能獲得貴公司有關(guān)英國(guó)產(chǎn)機(jī)器的詢價(jià)，我方將不勝感激。
2）在傳達(dá)無(wú)法滿足對(duì)方要求的信息或向?qū)Ψ奖硎静粷M情緒時(shí)，更需采用客氣、委婉的措詞。例如：
Thank you for your prompt reply and your quotations(No.958)for the motorcycles we
enquired about.We regret to find that the prices you quoted are not competitive enough to find a market in China.譯文：感謝貴公司及時(shí)回函對(duì)所詢摩托車(chē)報(bào)價(jià)（報(bào)價(jià)單第958 號(hào)），很遺憾，所報(bào)價(jià)格缺乏足夠的競(jìng)爭(zhēng)力，所以難以正在中國(guó)市場(chǎng)找到銷路。
3）在向交易對(duì)象提出希望或要求時(shí)，同樣需要注意禮貌用語(yǔ)。例如：
Your priority to the consideration of the above request will
be appreciated.譯文： 如你方能夠優(yōu)優(yōu)先考慮上述要求，我方將不勝感激。
在以上的幾個(gè)英文函電譯文中，選擇用詞時(shí)都體現(xiàn)了語(yǔ)用禮貌原則的要求。根據(jù)英國(guó)語(yǔ)言學(xué)家Geoffrey Leech 的禮貌原則理論，在翻譯的過(guò)程中“最大限度地使用表示禮貌的表述 語(yǔ)”，“避免或減少使用不禮貌的表述語(yǔ)”。不同的情況需要使用不同的禮貌用語(yǔ)。多使用You Attitude（對(duì)方態(tài)度），避免使用WeAttitude（我方態(tài)度）You Attitude 意為換位思考，將自己置于對(duì)方的立場(chǎng)，充分考慮交易對(duì)象的需求和利益，尊重和體諒對(duì)方。每封發(fā)出的信函都代表企業(yè)的形象，是友好的使者(messenger of good-will), 從對(duì)方的視角看問(wèn)題，了解對(duì)方的困難可以體現(xiàn)出我方的
