      略勝一籌 be a notch above

Be a notch above的意思就是 be better than someone,例如:

In oil painting, Mr.Zhang paints better than Mr.Liu.But when it comes to water colors, Mr.Liu appears to be a notch above Mr.Zhang.

2.很能干 have something on the ball

      這個(gè)片語的意思是“在某方面非常能干”,也寫作 be on the ball,例如:

I know Li Ming has a lot on the ball. But I’m not sure if he likes to work here.

Her typing is on the ball.

He overwhelmed so many of his opponents alone. He’s really something.

Qufu Normal University major:chinese teaching as a second language

      Grade:2008 Gen

A: Tom, I want to ask you something.

B: Say what you want to say.

A: You see.The wage is not paid yet, I have a big family to raise.

      B: Yes.What else?

A: Last night, my son warned me that if I did not buy a toy car for him, he would no longer call me dad.

B: Stop beating about the bush.Say what you really want!

A: I am wondering if you could possibly lend me some money.

B: I am sorry. But I do not have any money to lend to you.

      A: Tom, I want to borrow 300 dollars.

B: What do you need it for?

A: For birthday gifts to my son.

      B: Okay!

大家最熟悉的可能是VIP,這個(gè)縮寫已經(jīng)在國內(nèi)廣泛使用,它是指“A person of great importance or influence, especially a dignitary who commands special treatment.

      除此之外,big cheese,big shot,big gun,big wheel,big enchilada 也都可以表示“An important, powerful person;the boss 大人物”,比如:

She loves being the big cheese of her company.

The big guns in Congress are bound to change the President's bill.

You’d better not act like a big shot among your old friends.

Harry was the big wheel in his class.

You'll have to get permission from the big enchilada.

還有一個(gè) big fish,大家都聽過“a big fish in a small pond小池塘里的大魚”這個(gè)諺語吧,big fish 就是指“大人物”啦。

Qufu Normal University major:chinese teaching as a second language

      Grade:2008 Gen

Eva有句話是:“I wanna be a part of B.A.Buenos Aires, Big Apple”。

She is trying to cultivate all the biggies in Chicago. 此外,somebody 和 something 都可以表示“(大)人物”,比如: He is something.

I wanna be somebody, can you help me?

A: Why don’t you talk to the manager yourself? B: We are only small potatoes. The manager won’t listen to us.

      You are a big potato!

Don't listen to Henry;he's small beer.

(微不足道)He is nobody.

Let me pay it for you。 I am buying; This is on me;This is all my bill。

Do you really love her? Oh, it was just a one-time thing!

The most important thing嗎?看這個(gè)吧“It's on the top of my list”。

      5、“停電”:No electricity? Ther is a power failure或Power goes out。

6、“我不是傻子!”:I am not a fool? 但再看這個(gè)I am no fool。 同樣的道理,我們常說I have no idea,而不常說I dont have any idea。

當(dāng)然,那就是buy sb off。

9、She knew red was her color?! Then, what's your color?

For the love of God,另外For God's sake(sake的意思是緣故、關(guān)系)二者之中,后者更常用。
