Review of “Outsourced”
“Outsourced” is a typical fish-out-of-water tale about a young American telemarketer who learns that his job is being shipped overseas.Todd Anderson(Josh Hamilton)spends his days managing a customer call center in Seattle until his job, along with those of the entire office, are outsourced to India.Todd rejects but when his boss informs him that quitting would mean losing his stock options, he has to go to train his Indian replacement Puro(Asif Basra).Out of constant cultural misunderstandings, Todd(Josh Hamilton)is frustrated with everything in India.He eats food by using left hand which is taboo in India.Left hand is considered as dirty hand, which is used for clean something.That’s why Todd(Josh Hamilton)can’t find toilet paper in washroom.It is quite different from America.Also Todd(Josh Hamilton)sees the personal questions, which asked by the hostess, as an embarrassing invasion of his privacy.She questions Todd during his classes, tells him he needs to know more about India.Because of cultural diversity, Todd(Josh Hamilton)has difficulty making the call center employees understand what their American customers expect.In order to get the length of a call down to six minutes, Todd(Josh Hamilton)teaches the Indian employees to speak in American way.While an employee Asha(Ayesha Dharker)questions Todd(Josh Hamilton)during his classes, tells him he needs to know more about India.She becomes his teacher on such mysteries as Kali, the goddess of destruction(“Sometimes it is good to destroy.Then things can start again.”)Todd(Josh Hamilton)also shows Asha(Ayesha Dharker)the American value and offers her the job of assisting Puro(Asif Basra)when Todd(Josh Hamilton)leaves.“Asha can do anything.” It strengthen Asha(Ayesha Dharker)’s belief to be an independent modern woman.Todd realizes that he too has a lot to learn-not only about India and America, but about himself.He soon discovers that being outsourced may be the best thing that ever happened to him.“Outsourced” is a modern day comedy of cross-cultural conflict and romance.It is a film bursting with affection for its characters and for India.It is about people learning to really see one another.It has a fundamental sweetness and innocence.2

Newcomer writer/director John Jeffcoat is making a mini-splash with what could be the next big thing in “up the corporation” comedies.Even better, it is a romantic comedy with comely Ayesha Dharker providing the on-screen chemistry.Hamilton’s character Todd has graduated from college, probably like Hamilton’s previous character Grover in “Kicking and Screaming,” and has gravitated into the kind of dead end job that made “Office Space” famous.As in the latter flick, outsourcing is rearing its ugly head in the form of shipping customer service jobs to(where else?)India.As the film points out, everything that can be handled via phone or e-mail is being re-birthed on another continent and connected to the American pots of gold by satellite umbilicals.The workers Todd supervises will be the first to go and he will be next, that is, unless, he travels to India to train his replacement.So the plot goes, if he toes the line he will get his retirement and if he doesn’t he will live in a cardboard box.This is only the first of more than a few sophomoric mistakes made by Mr.Jeffcoat and co-writer George Wing, but we are given notice in the first few shots of dreamy Seattle that we are expected to suspend disbelief here(after all, it isn’t raining?.).Traveling to India, Todd makes mistakes dumber than any of us ever made going anywhere overseas, even in high school.Of course, his boss is even dumber.But that’s not the point.The point is that even though his girlfriend has dumped him and is sleeping with another guy when he calls and his corporate structure treats him like an indentured servant he stills loves the USA.That is, until he meets Asha, played by seductive Dharker.Between Asha’s homework on the Kamasutra and a neighborhood full of Indians who look and act more like North Carolinians, Josh learns that maybe the best things in life aren’t stock options.Josh is going to train Purohit(Asif Basra)to be the next supervisor of the order fulfilment(sic)department that will soon have its one and only call center in a small town about a hundred miles from Bombay.The very repeating of the department title of “order fulfillment” becomes funny after a while, at least for those in the audience with the patience to let it grow on them.But the new position, paying mountains of rupees a year, is the promise of a dream come true for Purohit.He needs it to marry the love of his life;a love as dear as the love Todd lost while he was abandoning his stateside life in favor of a customer fulfillment career.So Asha is not only the symbol of a different perspective, a kinder gentler capitalism, but she is the start of something great.Parents never fear, the film treads lightly when it wonders anywhere near the sexual.In one of the most amazing shows of modesty on the contemporary screen, Asha actually has clothes on in bed with Todd.The fact that she behaves more like a Hollywood starlet than a promised Indian bride will probably be glossed over by the average American watching the film.She is at least as virtuous as the girl next door.At least the girl next door in New York.Or Seattle.The film misses a couple great angles, like the 50” flat screen of Todd’s dreams to which Purohit is completely hip, but which never materializes.That would have been a great twist to have come back over the wall as Todd hands out his daily alms.In the end, if everybody doesn’t get what they want, they get what they need.The final twist is good hearted and clean-cut fun;as touching as it is believable.What goes around comes around.

世界是平的。正如托馬斯·弗里德曼在其著作《世界是平的》一書(shū)中寫(xiě)道的那樣:由于電腦、互聯(lián)網(wǎng)等通迅技術(shù)的飛速發(fā)展,導(dǎo)致信息傳遞的成本急速降低,從而打破了世界各地人們的地理阻隔,每個(gè)人都可以在同一起跑線(xiàn)上競(jìng)爭(zhēng)合作,全球的政治、經(jīng)濟(jì)、文化會(huì)發(fā)生史上空前的變革,而且這種變革正在無(wú)情地推進(jìn)著。
然而世界平而不坦。讀完《世界是平的:21世紀(jì)簡(jiǎn)史》洋洋灑灑500多頁(yè)的書(shū),聯(lián)系自己的認(rèn)識(shí)和接觸,在面對(duì)這個(gè)所謂“平”的世界時(shí)我卻不平靜了。這個(gè)世界被一群開(kāi)著碾壓機(jī)的人無(wú)情碾過(guò),所經(jīng)之處不再有繽紛各異的花朵和各具特色的芳香,剩下的更多是千篇一律、精心設(shè)計(jì)的標(biāo)準(zhǔn),然后那些司機(jī)回過(guò)頭看著被碾平的世界,向周?chē)€沒(méi)有輪子高的人們露出了難以解讀的微笑。一如作者在姊妹書(shū)《世界是平的——凌志汽車(chē)和橄欖樹(shù)》中的觀點(diǎn):“凌志汽車(chē)”是全球化的典型代表,它將人們帶入一個(gè)對(duì)全球化經(jīng)濟(jì)理解新的道路中;相對(duì)于這種理念,“橄欖樹(shù)”則代表更傳統(tǒng)的家庭、民族、地區(qū)性、傳統(tǒng)文化等更為傳統(tǒng)的因素,它們?yōu)槿颂峁﹥?nèi)心需求中穩(wěn)定的一面。
一、記錄和揭示時(shí)代的巨變
讀這兩本書(shū),你會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)真如作者自己所說(shuō)的那樣:如果你將《凌志汽車(chē)和橄欖樹(shù)》與《21世紀(jì)簡(jiǎn)史》這兩本書(shū)放在一起時(shí),你將會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)全球化劃分為三個(gè)偉大的時(shí)代,第一個(gè)時(shí)代從1492年持續(xù)到1800年,即全球化1.0版本,“全球化1.0”主要是國(guó)家間融合和全球化,勞動(dòng)力推動(dòng)著這一階段的全球化進(jìn)程,這期間世界從大變?yōu)橹械?;第二個(gè)時(shí)代可稱(chēng)為2.0版本,這一時(shí)代從1800年一直持續(xù)到2000年,中間曾被大蕭條和兩次世界大戰(zhàn)打斷,“全球化2.0”是公司之間的融合,各種硬件的發(fā)明和革新成為這次全球化的主要推動(dòng)力——從蒸汽船、鐵路到電話(huà)和計(jì)算機(jī)的普及,這期間世界從中等變小;3.0版的全球化是從2000年開(kāi)始的,個(gè)人成為了主角,膚色或東西方的文化差異不再是合作或競(jìng)爭(zhēng)的障礙,軟件的不斷創(chuàng)新,互聯(lián)網(wǎng)的普及,讓世界各地的人們可以通過(guò)因特網(wǎng)輕松實(shí)現(xiàn)自己的社會(huì)分工,這新一波的全球化正在抹平一切疆界,世界變平了,從小縮成了微小。
全球化趨勢(shì)不可逆轉(zhuǎn),作者試圖通過(guò)全球化這個(gè)維度來(lái)解析社會(huì)的巨變,以及我們這個(gè)時(shí)代未來(lái)的變遷,史詩(shī)般地記錄了社會(huì)的變化和聲音,以解析我們這個(gè)時(shí)代的現(xiàn)在和未來(lái)。
二、爭(zhēng)斗:凌志汽車(chē)和橄欖樹(shù)的永恒主題
全球化并不是就是鮮花盛開(kāi),完全的競(jìng)爭(zhēng)也意味著一個(gè)殘酷的競(jìng)技場(chǎng)。因此對(duì)全球化的評(píng)價(jià)也分成兩級(jí):贊成全球化的人強(qiáng)調(diào)的是機(jī)會(huì)均等,反對(duì)全球化的呼聲強(qiáng)調(diào)的是利益均等。因?yàn)橐粋€(gè)“機(jī)會(huì)均等的公平競(jìng)爭(zhēng)”,有時(shí)是極不公平的。就像不同國(guó)籍的學(xué)生去哈佛、耶魯?shù)让>妥x的難度也是不同的。
“凌志汽車(chē)’是全球化的象征和縮影,代表了全球化的技術(shù)與經(jīng)濟(jì),也正是這股力量讓世界扁平化,用全球史觀的角度解讀便是一種文明的碰撞和沖突?!伴蠙鞓?shù)”而橄欖樹(shù)則是和平的象征,它意味著國(guó)家、民族、宗教、語(yǔ)言和家園,相對(duì)應(yīng),橄欖樹(shù)象征著固定,植根于一處的本土形象。
今天,任何希望繁榮的社會(huì)必須不斷地努力建造一輛高標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的“凌志汽車(chē)”并將它開(kāi)出去,走向世界。但任何人都不應(yīng)該心存幻想,認(rèn)為只要參加全球化經(jīng)濟(jì)活動(dòng),他的社會(huì)就會(huì)健康了。如果參加全球化經(jīng)濟(jì)活動(dòng)要以國(guó)家被同化為代價(jià),如果參加的個(gè)人認(rèn)為他們的“橄欖樹(shù)”的根被全球化體系破壞了,或被沖掉了,這些“橄欖樹(shù)”的根就會(huì)被激怒,他們就會(huì)起來(lái)反抗并阻止全球化進(jìn)程。就像前段時(shí)間看到的一條這樣的新聞:英國(guó)一位9歲的小女孩在股東大會(huì)的聽(tīng)眾發(fā)言中要求首席執(zhí)行官唐·湯普森停止“欺騙兒童購(gòu)買(mǎi)你家食品”,批評(píng)麥當(dāng)勞刻意繞過(guò)家長(zhǎng)、直接向兒童推銷(xiāo)產(chǎn)品的做法。沒(méi)有“凌志汽車(chē)”的國(guó)家絕不可能強(qiáng)大,也不可能走得太遠(yuǎn);沒(méi)有健康的“橄欖樹(shù)”的國(guó)家也絕不可能有牢固的根基或全部的對(duì)外部世界的開(kāi)放,所以保持它們之間的平衡要經(jīng)過(guò)不屈不撓的斗爭(zhēng)。
我本人也覺(jué)得,全球化無(wú)論好壞,可能是現(xiàn)代化無(wú)可逆轉(zhuǎn)的趨勢(shì),不過(guò)現(xiàn)在為此做好準(zhǔn)備的,大多并不是窮國(guó),因此這種驟然放開(kāi)的格局,最終造成的也許是強(qiáng)者更強(qiáng),弱者更弱。對(duì)他描繪的這個(gè)新世界,我很難立刻鼓掌歡迎,對(duì)不少弱勢(shì)的人群來(lái)說(shuō),這個(gè)前景未來(lái)也許使自己越競(jìng)爭(zhēng)越有力,可第一關(guān)太難了,他們也許還沒(méi)進(jìn)門(mén)就倒下了。
全球化將深刻地影響我們的經(jīng)濟(jì)、社會(huì)、政治生活的各個(gè)方面,改變每個(gè)人的工作方式、生活方式乃至生存的方式。不論是政府部門(mén)、商業(yè)部門(mén)、社會(huì)部門(mén)、各行各業(yè)的管理者、員工還是自由職業(yè)者概莫能免。弗里德曼一針見(jiàn)血的指出了世界未來(lái)的趨勢(shì)和方向。
世界平而不坦。最后我還是想用一句官方的話(huà)來(lái)結(jié)束:“全球化是一把雙刃劍,它既能促進(jìn)經(jīng)濟(jì)增長(zhǎng)繁榮,又能使周期性經(jīng)濟(jì)波動(dòng)的影響具有全球性;它既能提高一部分人的生活水平,又可能加劇全球范圍內(nèi)貧富分化和不平等;它既能為人們帶來(lái)經(jīng)濟(jì)福祉,又可能產(chǎn)生全球性生態(tài)環(huán)境問(wèn)題;它既能增強(qiáng)人們之間的相互依存,也會(huì)引發(fā)各種暴力、沖突甚至戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)??傊畽C(jī)遇與挑戰(zhàn)并存?!?/p>

在寧波大學(xué)成教學(xué)院參加浙江省農(nóng)村中小學(xué)骨干教師領(lǐng)雁工程初中校長(zhǎng)班培訓(xùn)期間,我的身邊帶著一本書(shū),這是我半年前從新華書(shū)店購(gòu)得但一直沒(méi)認(rèn)真讀的一本暢銷(xiāo)書(shū)。是美國(guó)《紐約時(shí)報(bào)》的專(zhuān)欄作家托馬斯·弗里德曼用了4年時(shí)間寫(xiě)成的一本重點(diǎn)論述“全球化”的專(zhuān)著。現(xiàn)在,利用這段“閑靜似水”的日子,我看完了這本書(shū),雖然我依然認(rèn)為我并沒(méi)有讀懂這本書(shū),但似懂非懂之間,它讓我思考了很多,收獲不小。
弗里德曼在書(shū)里用生動(dòng)的故事、已有的術(shù)語(yǔ)和概念,描繪了全球化這種體系。他突出了“凌志汽車(chē)”和“橄欖樹(shù)”的沖突——全球化體系和文化、地理、傳統(tǒng)以及社會(huì)的古老力量之間的緊張狀態(tài)。他還詳盡地?cái)⒄f(shuō)了全球化在那些感覺(jué)到全球化殘酷性的人群中所產(chǎn)生的強(qiáng)烈反作用。他清楚地說(shuō)明了應(yīng)該如何才能保證這一體系的平衡。他的觀點(diǎn)是:全球化不只是一種現(xiàn)象,也不只是一種短暫的趨勢(shì)。它是一種取代冷戰(zhàn)體系的國(guó)際體系。全球化是資本、技術(shù)和信息超越國(guó)界的結(jié)合,這種結(jié)合創(chuàng)造了一個(gè)單一的全球市場(chǎng),在某種程度上是一個(gè)全球村。
在看這本書(shū)的時(shí)候,我總是把自己頭腦中已有的經(jīng)濟(jì)全球化的理論或者認(rèn)識(shí)調(diào)動(dòng)出來(lái)與之進(jìn)行一個(gè)廣泛的對(duì)比,確實(shí)感到經(jīng)濟(jì)全球化洶涌而來(lái),同時(shí)也深感自己知識(shí)的匱乏。
弗里德曼不愧是記者身份,他用幾近煽情的手法和大膽的想象來(lái)解讀全球化,確實(shí)給人耳目一新的感覺(jué),有點(diǎn)象在看電影,也有點(diǎn)象在讀一篇扣人心弦的懸疑小說(shuō)。但讀完之后,冷靜地做一分析,你就能讀到作者本身并不是經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)家,因?yàn)樗麑?duì)經(jīng)濟(jì)全球化的解釋比較大膽。
我對(duì)經(jīng)濟(jì)全球化的理解來(lái)源于傳統(tǒng)的馬克思的政治經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué),就像我們大多數(shù)人了解費(fèi)爾巴哈和黑格爾是從認(rèn)識(shí)馬克思恩格斯和列寧開(kāi)始的一樣,但這一點(diǎn)并不妨礙我對(duì)馬克思的政治經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)的認(rèn)同感。按照馬克思的理論,推動(dòng)人類(lèi)歷史向前發(fā)展的決定因素是生產(chǎn)力,生產(chǎn)力中最重要的因素是科學(xué)技術(shù),而我們平常眼見(jiàn)最多的東西--形形色色的經(jīng)濟(jì)現(xiàn)象,社會(huì)現(xiàn)象,乃至文化現(xiàn)象和生活方式均來(lái)源于和決定于我們?nèi)庋劭床灰?jiàn)摸不著的生產(chǎn)力和科學(xué)技術(shù)。所以從這一點(diǎn)來(lái)說(shuō),是人類(lèi)的智慧,是科技造就了過(guò)去、今天和未來(lái)。在原始社會(huì),一切愚昧和文明均產(chǎn)生和決定于生產(chǎn)力和科學(xué)技術(shù),直到今天也是如此。盡管他的表現(xiàn)方式千差萬(wàn)別或者說(shuō)今非昔比,但人類(lèi)社會(huì)向前發(fā)展的規(guī)律并沒(méi)有改變,經(jīng)濟(jì)全球化同樣如此。以互聯(lián)網(wǎng)為核心的科學(xué)技術(shù)的發(fā)展使我們?nèi)伺c人之間的距離感和時(shí)空感消失了。我們甚至能常常感到和布什或者是內(nèi)賈德坐在同一條板凳上。這就是技術(shù),把這個(gè)世界緊緊聯(lián)系在了一起。
弗里德曼指出,由于市場(chǎng)的全球化,特別是資本市場(chǎng)的全球化,使這個(gè)世界的經(jīng)濟(jì)敏感得比流感來(lái)的還快,比禽流感的傳播還要迅猛。有點(diǎn)像“蝴蝶效應(yīng)”?;蛘吣阊鎏扉L(zhǎng)嘆一口氣,就引起了“卡特尼娜”颶風(fēng)。你跺一跺腳,就引發(fā)了“東南亞海嘯”。世界各國(guó)的經(jīng)濟(jì)聯(lián)系越來(lái)越千絲萬(wàn)縷,越來(lái)越榮辱與共。由于資本市場(chǎng)的一體化,可能我們已經(jīng)不能辨別世界500強(qiáng)企業(yè)到底是哪個(gè)國(guó)家的。
弗里德曼對(duì)環(huán)境問(wèn)題表示了高度的關(guān)注,指出引起環(huán)境問(wèn)題的原因經(jīng)濟(jì)的不合理發(fā)展,但同時(shí)指出解決環(huán)境問(wèn)題還是得靠科技,人類(lèi)必須走一條科技進(jìn)步與環(huán)境保護(hù)共同發(fā)展的道路。
因?yàn)椴⒉粡氖掠诮?jīng)濟(jì)領(lǐng)域,我是讀不太懂這本書(shū)的,但還是收獲了緊迫感。深感國(guó)家要強(qiáng)大,要走出狹隘,走出在世界低端市場(chǎng)徘徊的囹圄,還是得靠人才。面對(duì)洶涌而來(lái)的全球化浪潮,無(wú)論是企業(yè),還是政府,如果缺乏全球戰(zhàn)略型的人才,無(wú)疑是個(gè)巨大的硬傷。企業(yè)缺乏全球化視野的人才,就難以在經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展浪潮中浮沉,國(guó)家缺乏全球視野的人才,就難以在世界范圍內(nèi)把握自己的命運(yùn)。此時(shí)此刻,我更深秋的感受到,作為教育工作者,我們的工作對(duì)于國(guó)家的發(fā)展和民族的振興具有著怎樣的意義,我們今天的工作就是明天國(guó)家的實(shí)力。
當(dāng)前,中國(guó)正在走一條科技興國(guó)的科學(xué)發(fā)展之路,這是適應(yīng)經(jīng)濟(jì)全球化的不二選擇。中國(guó)也正經(jīng)歷著一場(chǎng)巨大的教育變革。在培訓(xùn)的這段日子里,我們聽(tīng)了很多講座,有教育領(lǐng)域的,也有經(jīng)濟(jì)范疇的,有管理經(jīng)驗(yàn)的,更有教育思想的,我們的教育該何去何從,哪些是我們必須繼承的,哪些又是我們必須變革的,經(jīng)濟(jì)已經(jīng)是全球化了,教育作為意識(shí)形態(tài)的東西,也會(huì)全球化或者已經(jīng)全球化了嗎?教育的全球化和經(jīng)濟(jì)的全球化又什么區(qū)別嗎?具體到我們每一所學(xué)校,具體到我們教育工作中的每一個(gè)環(huán)節(jié),我們?cè)撘栽鯓拥臅r(shí)代眼光和國(guó)際眼光去審視?我們培養(yǎng)的學(xué)生能參與二十年后的國(guó)際競(jìng)爭(zhēng)嗎?當(dāng)然,我無(wú)法對(duì)這樣的大問(wèn)題做出回答,但我們需要這樣的思考,這就是《世界是平的》這本書(shū)帶給我的啟發(fā)。
