從我開始教雅思寫作的時候，所謂的“套句”和“模板”在雅思寫作當(dāng)中是否有用就一直是一個有爭議的問題。2005年我剛從一個基礎(chǔ)英語教師轉(zhuǎn)型為雅思培訓(xùn)師的時候，當(dāng)時的主流回答是“有用”。翻看當(dāng)時出版的各種雅思寫作參考書，幾乎范文里都或多或少有類似“Today, the issue that......has aroused great controversy in the modern society.While some people believe that......, this view, nevertheless, is counterargued by some other people who firmly stand by the viewpoint that.......In my opinion, both viewpoints have their merits and in this article, I would like to exploit the issue with the following aspects.”這樣的“經(jīng)典套句”。于是當(dāng)時本人也跟風(fēng)設(shè)計了一套自己的模板，并在我當(dāng)時教授的雅思寫作課程中專門開辟了“快速模板”這樣一個單元。然而實踐下來教學(xué)成果卻讓我非常困惑，因為同樣使用本人開發(fā)的“俞式模板”去寫雅思作文的考生，既有拿到7分的高分的，也有只拿到5分并且憤而在網(wǎng)上把我罵到臭頭的。本人這次特別翻箱倒柜，找出了當(dāng)年的“俞式模板”：

作為當(dāng)時一個有覺悟的新東方新老師，我又作出了一個重大的決定：追隨組織大流，毅然把曾經(jīng)在我的雅思寫作課程中占據(jù)4小時左右長度的“快速模板”這個單元從我的講義當(dāng)中.永久地刪除了！

現(xiàn)在是2009年，我不用模板已經(jīng)很多年（其實也就是兩年），但對于模板和套句在雅思寫作當(dāng)中的作用，說實話，I was still not so sure——你注意到了，我用的是一般過去時——which means 我現(xiàn)在對于這個問題已經(jīng)有了答案，因為我遇到了她： Vanessa Jakeman，英國人，包括劍橋系列叢書在內(nèi)的多部雅思著作的作者，英國雅思界權(quán)威。

前一段時間我們部門正好有幸邀請到老太太吃飯，借著這個難得的機(jī)會，大家都把平時教學(xué)中碰到的問題向老太太請教，我的問題就是關(guān)于模板和套句：這玩意兒在雅思考試?yán)锏降资恰斑@個可以有”還是“這個真不能有”？

老太太給我的回答可以用一個詞回答：Relevance（相關(guān)性）。Yes, it's all about relevance.也就是說套句也好模板也好，的確“有時候可以用有時候不能用”，關(guān)鍵取決于你用的是否切題。老太太有說到很多低分雅思考生的問題正是在于他們手里都有一套模板，但他們不知道哪些題目里這個模板是能用的，哪些是不能用的。比如最近一次雅思考試（2009.4.18）的作文考題：

Some people believe that if products are of good quality or meet people’s needs, people will buy them naturally.So advertisements are not necessary and no more than a form of entertainment.To what extent do you agree or disagree?(抽象類)

如果有人寫：Today, the issue that advertisements are not important and only a kind of entertainment has aroused great controversy......那么這個考生馬上就會被嚴(yán)重扣分，因為issue是指“有爭議的問題”（比如“安樂死是否應(yīng)合法化”

之類的），而這個 topic中提到的“廣告不是不可或缺的而只是一種娛樂”純粹是部分人的personal opinion,并不是issue，因此這里盲目照搬套句模板就一定會被扣分。而如果像今年2月7號的作文考題：

Some people believe that rich countries provide poorer countries with other types of help rather than financial aid.To what extent do you agree or disagree?(政府決策類)

如果用剛才的模板來寫開頭 : Today, the issue whether rich countries ought to provide poorer countries with other types of help instead of financial aid has aroused great controversy......按照老太太的說法就完全沒有問題，因為rich countries到底應(yīng)該向poorer countries提供怎么樣的援助本來就是屬于有爭議的問題，的確是issue沒錯。

綜上所述，其實套句或者模板在雅思寫作中還是可以用的——當(dāng)然是在你能夠確保正確使用的前提之下。我會不會在作文課恢復(fù)“快速模板”這個單元？......Well, I am afraid my answer has to be “NO”.因為畢竟模板套句之類的還是比較適合英語寫作基礎(chǔ)比較薄弱的考生，大多數(shù)水平中等或以上的考生完全有能力不需要借助模板就能夠拿到6分或6分以上的成績?；蛘哌@樣說可能更清楚：使用模板的前提是考生能正確識別哪些題目能用模板，用什么模板。而基礎(chǔ)較差的考生往往做不到這一點所以模板不適合他們。而能夠做到這一點的考生基本上英語實力已經(jīng)達(dá)到一定的高度，完全可以靠自己的能力獨立寫出一篇得分在6分以上的雅思作文，所以也不需要模板。因此，我們可以確定模板套句對大多數(shù)考生基本無用，除非你是這樣一個考生：英語基礎(chǔ)較差，自己無法獨立寫出完整正確的段落，手里握有好幾套模板，而且對于各種不同的 topics適合用哪一種具體的模板都有正確的認(rèn)識，并能相應(yīng)地準(zhǔn)確使用之……問題是，在地球上有這種人存在嗎？
