      President Brodhead, Trustees, members of the Duke University Community, thank you for inviting me to come back to my alma mater for this important occasion.I am grateful for the honorary degree, and moved by the opportunity to address the graduating seniors.To the Class of 2013: Let me start by saying congratulations......and by reminding you to thank your mothers and wish them a happy Mothers' Day......and by admitting that I'm still bitter about the Louisville game.I was a student here in 1986 when Coach K took the team to the finals for the first time.We lost to Louisville then, too, so you and I share that particular agony.However, you had the good fortune to be here on campus when Duke won its fourth national championship.I never got to see us cut down the nets, but I did see us beat UNC, in Chapel Hill, when Michael Jordan was the star of the team.The fact that Michael Jordan recently turned 50 years old tells you how long it's been since I was a student.No matter how much time passes, though, I always feel connected to Duke.I love visiting my favorite landmarks, especially the Duke Gardens, where I used to go when I was stressed out before exams and needed to clear my head.I went yesterday, because I wanted to make sure I was centered before giving this speech.There's also my feeling of deep connection to the community my classmates created during our four years, and to the lifelong friends I made here--in short, to the people.I doubt there is a word that captures the combination of experiences and places and people that we summarize under the label “Duke.” The best one I can think of is “connected.” And this is a word I'd like to talk about for a few minutes on your Commencement Day.In August, 1982, I left my home in Dallas, Texas, to come here to Durham.To mark this rite of passage, my parents gave me a terrific present: the cutting-edge Olympus B12 portable typewriter, with a carrying case included.One of its best features was how light it was: Amazingly, the whole bundle weighed just 12 pounds!

      It was during my time at Duke that the personal computer displaced the typewriter as the technology of choice on campus.Those of us in the computer science department actually resented the change.There were so few computers available, and all of a sudden the humanities majors were hogging our machines to write their papers.We had to do our programming in the middle of the night, usually in the creepy basement of the old biological science building.We'd set up contests--who programmed the fastest or made the fewest mistakes--kind of like a prehistoric hack-a-thon.The punishment for the losers was a trip to the biology lab at the end of the hall, where they had to touch the scariest mutant frog specimens.CONNECTION, AN INTRODUCTION

      The personal computer--and later, after I'd graduated and taken a job at Microsoft, the Internet--started a communications revolution.My kids are a few years younger than you, but raising them has proved to me that the way you communicate is the single biggest difference between you now and me a generation ago.One popular way of describing this aspect of your lives is to say that you're “connected.” Some pundits have even started to refer to you as Generation C.One recent report overdid the c-thing by saying you are “connected, communicating, content-centric, community-oriented, always clicking.” It went on to say that, for these reasons alone, you will “transform the world as we know it.”

      Of course, all the hype about how connected you are has contributed to a counter-narrative--that, in fact, your generation is increasingly disconnected from the things that matter.The arguments go something like this: Instead of spending time with friends, you spend it alone, collecting friend requests.Rather than savoring your food, you take pictures of it and post them on Facebook.I want to encourage you to reject the cynics who say technology is flattening your experience of the world.Please don't let anyone make you believe you are somehow shallow because you like to update your status on a regular basis.The people who say technology has disconnected you from others are wrong.So are the people who say technology automatically connects you to others.Technology is just a tool.It's a powerful tool, but it's just a tool.Deep human connection is very different.It's not a tool.It's not a means to an end.It is the end--the purpose and the result of a meaningful life--and it will inspire the most amazing acts of love, generosity, and humanity.In his famous speech “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution,” Martin Luther King Jr.said, “Through our scientific and technological genius, we have made of this world a neighborhood and yet we have not had the ethical commitment to make of it a brotherhood.”

      With 50 years of hindsight, I think it's fair to say Dr.King was premature in calling the world a neighborhood.Back then, Americans lumped whole continents into something they referred to as the Third World, as if the people on the other side of the planet were an undifferentiated mass whose defining feature was that they were not like us.But as a result of the ongoing communications revolution, your world really can be a neighborhood.So the ethical commitment Dr.King spoke of is yours to live up to.What does it mean to make of this world a brotherhood and a sisterhood? That probably sounds like a lot to ask of you as individuals, or even as a graduating class.I'm pretty sure none of you will respond to the annoying question “What are you going to do after graduation?” by saying “I plan to have the ethical commitment to make of this world a brotherhood.”

      But you can change the way you think about other people.You can choose to see their humanity first--the one big thing that makes them the same as you, instead of the many things that make them different from you.It is not just a matter of caring about people.I assume you already do that.It's much harder to see all people, including people whose experiences are very different from yours, as three-dimensional human beings who want and need the same things you do.But if you can really believe that all 7 billion people on the planet are equal to you in spirit, then you will take action to make the world more equal for everyone.PAUL FARMER, TESTAMENT TO CONNECTION

      Paul Farmer, the Duke graduate I admire most, is a testament to the deep human connection I'm talking about.As many of you know, Paul, who's here today, is a doctor and global health innovator.For years, he traveled back and forth from Boston, where he is a professor of medicine, to Haiti, where he ran a health clinic giving the highest quality care to the poorest people in the world.Now, he lives mostly in Rwanda, where he's working on changing the country's entire health care system.I first met Paul in 2003, when I went to see him in Haiti.It took us forever to walk the 100 yards from our vehicle to the clinic because he introduced me to every single person we met along the way.I am not exaggerating.Every single person.As we moved along, he introduced each person to me by first and last name, wished their families well, and asked for an update about their lives.He hugged people when he greeted them and looked them in the eyes throughout each conversation.If you believe love plays a role in healing, there was healing happening at every step of that journey.When we finally reached the waiting area outside the clinic, I saw a lovely garden with a canopy of flowering vines.Paul told me he built it himself, for two reasons.First, he said, it gets hot, and he wants to his patients to be cool in the shade while they wait.Second, he wants them to see what he sees, the beauty of the world, before they have to go into the clinic for treatment.The next day, I visited a different clinic in Haiti.The clinic was there for the same reason as Paul's--to provide poor people with the medical care they desperately need but cannot afford.The doctors worked there for all the right reasons.But I noticed that the patients were waiting outside in the scorching sun.Inside, it felt like the doctors considered themselves health providers, and the patients were recipients.There was no sense, as there was in Paul's clinic, of an equal partnership with the community.Experiencing those two clinics one right after the other showed me that Paul made a moral choice to do the hard work of deep connection.He took the time to do the little things: provide shade, remember surnames, and make eye contact.These small acts were born of a big idea--the boundless dignity of all people.

      目前,大多數(shù)農(nóng)作物保護(hù)策略都包括通過基因改良提高作物抵抗害蟲和病原體的能力,或者使用化學(xué)制劑驅(qū)散害蟲。但是在蟲害嚴(yán)重的區(qū)域,例如撒哈拉以南非洲的熱帶地區(qū),如果新型農(nóng)作物改良品種僅有單一來源的基因抗性,往往在貧困農(nóng)戶還沒有獲得這些改良品種之前或在他們剛剛拿到之后不久,它們的基因抗性就已經(jīng)不再對(duì)生物脅迫起作用了。盡管有些農(nóng)戶的確使用化學(xué)除草劑和殺蟲劑,但是卻沒有經(jīng)過專門的訓(xùn)練,因而導(dǎo)致無效或不安全使用。

      對(duì)于小型農(nóng)戶來說,在收獲季節(jié)之后對(duì)農(nóng)作物造成破壞的害蟲和病原體給他們?cè)斐傻拇驌敉瑯邮请y以承受的。收貨后的損失意味著家中剩余作物無法被賣出,不僅影響了農(nóng)戶們的生計(jì),還迫使他們不得不自己吃完那些被污染的作物。這些限制不光直接沖擊著農(nóng)戶家庭自身,也影響到他們所在的社區(qū)和國(guó)家的糧食安全。

      挑戰(zhàn): 本議題的目的是為發(fā)展中國(guó)家的小型農(nóng)戶尋求變革性的解決方案,幫助他們應(yīng)對(duì)害蟲和病原體帶來的危害。我們鼓勵(lì)研究人員和企業(yè)家,利用生物學(xué)和工程學(xué)的新興信息和工具促進(jìn)農(nóng)業(yè)發(fā)展,并通過重點(diǎn)研究植株、害蟲、病菌、雜草、以及/或它們之間的相互作用,找到對(duì)現(xiàn)行方法進(jìn)行革命性變革的途徑。提案內(nèi)無需提供初步數(shù)據(jù),而應(yīng)清晰地證明與體現(xiàn)該提案在創(chuàng)新層面的意義,以及其促成根本變革的潛質(zhì)。

      請(qǐng)注意,申請(qǐng)?zhí)岚副仨毰c基金會(huì)農(nóng)業(yè)發(fā)展團(tuán)隊(duì)的目標(biāo)保持一致。因此,我們所尋求的提案應(yīng)該能夠:

      ? 為保護(hù)農(nóng)作物免受生物脅迫提供創(chuàng)新與具有變革性的方案;

      ? 在未來的十到二十年內(nèi)能大力提高發(fā)展中國(guó)家小型農(nóng)戶的可持續(xù)生產(chǎn)力; ? 跟目前的作物保護(hù)措施相比,提供一種大幅降低成本或提高效率的可能性; ? 適用于以下一種或多種作物:玉米,小麥,大米,小米,高粱,木薯,紅薯,山藥,豆,豇豆,鷹嘴豆,花生; ? 針對(duì)某種或某些特定的生物脅迫; ? 傳達(dá)一個(gè)清晰且可驗(yàn)證的假說。

      以下是會(huì)被列入考慮的幾個(gè)范例: ? 生物、化學(xué)和生物化學(xué)領(lǐng)域以外的應(yīng)用方向,包括:工程,物理科學(xué),大氣科學(xué),流行病學(xué),計(jì)算機(jī)科學(xué)及其他

      ? 生物防治

      ? 新型分子或基因手段

      ? 創(chuàng)新的作物管理或綜合蟲害管理措施 ? 用于收獲后作物保護(hù)的生物和工程解決方案;

      ? 使更廣泛的環(huán)境可持續(xù)性與農(nóng)作物保護(hù)有機(jī)銜接的新戰(zhàn)略; ? 其他沒有在此強(qiáng)調(diào)的應(yīng)用方向

      我們不會(huì)考慮資助以下申請(qǐng):

      ? 針對(duì)目前作物保護(hù)措施既有的知識(shí)與應(yīng)用所做的漸進(jìn)式改進(jìn);

      ? 不直接與發(fā)展中國(guó)家相關(guān)的提案;

      ? 不適用于下列作物提案:玉米、小麥、大米、小米、高粱、木薯、紅薯、山藥、豆類、鷹嘴豆和落花生;

      ? 對(duì)現(xiàn)今受管制化學(xué)品的改良,或開發(fā)新的將會(huì)被定為受管制化學(xué)品的化學(xué)配方; ? 維持型作物育種,例如利用既成的遺傳或標(biāo)準(zhǔn)育種技術(shù)在已知的種質(zhì)庫(kù)里進(jìn)行性狀選擇;

      ? 把現(xiàn)有技術(shù)轉(zhuǎn)移至新的系統(tǒng),而未進(jìn)行創(chuàng)新改良(譬如:把既成的植物抗逆基因插入不同的物種);

      ? 種子、化學(xué)品、資源投入或其他現(xiàn)有技術(shù)服務(wù)的交付模型; ? 局限于為展示或宣傳現(xiàn)有技術(shù)提供推廣服務(wù)的提案; ? 缺乏明確目標(biāo)或創(chuàng)新方法的大規(guī)模篩選

      ? 僅針對(duì)非生物性脅迫的提案(如干旱,酷熱等)。

      六、本期主題——設(shè)計(jì)能優(yōu)化免疫接種系統(tǒng)的新手段

      背景:

      預(yù)防接種是世界上最具有成本效益的健康干預(yù)措施之一。然而,每年有大約兩千五百萬幼兒并未全面接種疫苗,更有至少兩百四十萬兒童死于疫苗可預(yù)防的疾病。

      自從免疫接種計(jì)劃于20世紀(jì)70年代中期在全球中低收入國(guó)家開展以來,大多數(shù)國(guó)家在其免疫規(guī)劃中都一直使用相同的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)配置,包括六種疫苗:麻疹、破傷風(fēng)、白喉、百日咳、肺結(jié)核和脊髓灰質(zhì)炎。近十年來,由于疫苗接種對(duì)公共健康的影響愈發(fā)明顯,人們對(duì)新疫苗開發(fā)越來越感興趣,投入新疫苗開發(fā)和供應(yīng)的資金大幅增加。在未來十年內(nèi),中低收入國(guó)家將有機(jī)會(huì)把許多能夠拯救生命的新疫苗引入其標(biāo)準(zhǔn)免疫方案,而在某些情況下,某些國(guó)家的免疫方案中所提供疫苗數(shù)量將會(huì)增加一倍。

      對(duì)抗麻疹、白喉、破傷風(fēng)、百日咳及脊髓灰質(zhì)炎的傳統(tǒng)疫苗成本低廉,多在每劑$0.10美元至$0.25美元之間。由于用來發(fā)現(xiàn)和開發(fā)新疫苗的投資增加,同時(shí)有些制造工藝也相當(dāng)復(fù)雜,新疫苗的成本顯著增高,從1.00到15.00美元不等。這些增加的成本推動(dòng)我們需要改變疫苗推介方式。

      隨著這些新疫苗的引進(jìn),許多國(guó)家也面臨著新的挑戰(zhàn)——包括疫苗的供應(yīng),以及保證其疫苗接種計(jì)劃能夠普及到新的目標(biāo)人群。在2010年,一批價(jià)值近一百萬美元的二十五萬劑五價(jià)疫苗在某國(guó)家的中央倉(cāng)庫(kù)放置過期,因?yàn)樵搰?guó)用來運(yùn)輸這些疫苗的系統(tǒng)未能準(zhǔn)備就緒。另一個(gè)國(guó)家則被迫推遲引入新疫苗的計(jì)劃,因?yàn)樾枰獙⑵鋰?guó)家存儲(chǔ)系統(tǒng)擴(kuò)大9倍,才能把該新疫苗加入其免疫接種計(jì)劃中。因此,中低收入國(guó)家必須想辦法改善其國(guó)家免疫接種計(jì)劃的物流系統(tǒng),解決其供應(yīng)系統(tǒng)所面臨的日益沉重的負(fù)擔(dān)。

      障礙

      中低收入國(guó)家在疫苗物流與供應(yīng)系統(tǒng)上所面臨的主要挑戰(zhàn)如下:

      ? 新疫苗給中低收入國(guó)家的免疫接種計(jì)劃的物流和供應(yīng)系統(tǒng)帶來多方面的挑戰(zhàn),有些新疫苗可能會(huì)占據(jù)供應(yīng)鏈的冷藏空間,要求更復(fù)雜的管理措施,并且其熱穩(wěn)定性可能無法適應(yīng)中低收入國(guó)家具有挑戰(zhàn)性的環(huán)境。

      ? 現(xiàn)有的疫苗供應(yīng)系統(tǒng)都是在多年以前設(shè)計(jì)的,因此,不少系統(tǒng)效率低下,其操作也與其他健康干預(yù)的供應(yīng)系統(tǒng),和/或私營(yíng)部門完全隔離。再者,目前也不存在能夠持續(xù)地監(jiān)督這些系統(tǒng)以引導(dǎo)必要的調(diào)整與改進(jìn)的機(jī)制。

      ? 從國(guó)際層面到地區(qū)層面,制造商,捐款人,以及在某種程度上甚至各個(gè)國(guó)家本身都不重視疫苗供應(yīng)系統(tǒng)所消耗的能源,材料與工序?qū)Νh(huán)境造成的影響。

      ? 當(dāng)前的信息系統(tǒng)設(shè)計(jì)并沒有采用先進(jìn)的技術(shù),而這些先進(jìn)的技術(shù)可以幫助指導(dǎo)免疫接種計(jì)劃的管理者們?cè)O(shè)計(jì)和執(zhí)行方案戰(zhàn)略,從而保證有足夠數(shù)量的疫苗,以正確的形式滿足需求。

      ? 中低收入國(guó)家目前的人力資源政策無法保證,在其各級(jí)管理機(jī)構(gòu)都有足夠數(shù)量的、能干、積極、有自主性的人員被授權(quán)克服目前免疫接種計(jì)劃供應(yīng)系統(tǒng)中新出現(xiàn)的挑戰(zhàn)。? 盡管免疫接種計(jì)劃獲得了巨大的成功,每五個(gè)孩子中仍然有一個(gè)孩子得不到基礎(chǔ)疫苗的接種。

      我們希望尋求到的: 本課題旨在發(fā)掘新方法,在資源貧乏的環(huán)境中優(yōu)化疫苗接種計(jì)劃所需的物流與供應(yīng)系統(tǒng)的表現(xiàn)。鼓勵(lì)申請(qǐng)者重新審查用于運(yùn)輸疫苗的系統(tǒng),設(shè)計(jì)創(chuàng)新的解決方案優(yōu)化這些系統(tǒng)的性能。我們所期待的申請(qǐng)?zhí)岚甘?,大膽?chuàng)新且明顯區(qū)別于當(dāng)前在調(diào)查研究階段或已經(jīng)采用的方法。在本課題下提交的解決方案,必須側(cè)重于國(guó)家的免疫接種相關(guān)的系統(tǒng)的操作性,并且具備在不同環(huán)境里規(guī)模性復(fù)制的潛力。

      申請(qǐng)?zhí)岚钢斜仨毎軌蛑С痔嶙h的強(qiáng)有力的理論基礎(chǔ),表明其對(duì)某個(gè)國(guó)家的情況和需求的清晰理解,提出明確的假設(shè),以及相關(guān)計(jì)劃說明如何測(cè)試或驗(yàn)證有關(guān)設(shè)想。所提議的設(shè)想最終必須能夠轉(zhuǎn)化為實(shí)際的干預(yù)措施,且適用于資源有限的情況。

      第四篇:高西慶-杜克大學(xué)法學(xué)院2014屆畢業(yè)典禮演講

      高西慶校友在美國(guó)杜克大學(xué)法學(xué)院2014屆畢業(yè)典禮上的演講 在剛剛結(jié)束的美國(guó)杜克大學(xué)法學(xué)院2014屆畢業(yè)典禮上,86屆畢業(yè)生高西慶校友深情回憶了他年輕時(shí)修鐵路不忘學(xué)習(xí)英語,后來到Duke法學(xué)院求學(xué)住在圖書館,再后來回國(guó)建立中國(guó)資本市場(chǎng)的人生經(jīng)歷,并給畢業(yè)生們提出了建議:保持開放的心態(tài),肯吃苦、不過分追求物質(zhì)生活,最重要的是愿意嘗試別人沒有走過的道路。不忘初心,方得始終。今天我們?nèi)目l(fā)高老師演講全文(中英文對(duì)照),以饗讀者。I was going to speak today about the necessity for an open-mind as you approach new opportunities, new environment and new paradigm, the need to have stamina in times of difficulty and to not be afraid to take the road less travelled.But I believe most of you know this or you wouldn’t be here today in the first place.我今天本來想跟大家講講未來當(dāng)你們面對(duì)新的機(jī)會(huì)、新的環(huán)境以及新的模式時(shí)保持開放心態(tài)的必要性,以及遇到困難時(shí)應(yīng)該怎樣保持堅(jiān)持不懈的努力和擁有另辟蹊徑的勇氣??墒牵蚁嘈旁谧拇蟛糠秩硕家呀?jīng)十分明白這些道理,否則你們不會(huì)取得今天的成績(jī)。

      So I'm just going to give you a piece of avuncular advice, tell my story and be boring:

      所以我只想從一個(gè)長(zhǎng)者的角度給你們一點(diǎn)建議,講講我的故事,或許這會(huì)比較無聊。

      Close to thirty years ago, I was where you are today and only a few years before that, it would have seemed impossible to me that I would ever sit where you are today.You have earned this seat, through intelligence, diligence and discipline, my deepest congratulations to all of you.For all the cynicism in the world today, especially given how people perceive the practice of law, I encourage all of you to preserve your optimism, idealism and passion for what you do.大約30年前,我正坐在你們現(xiàn)在坐的位置上;如果再倒回幾年的話,我完全不敢想像自己有朝一日會(huì)成為你們其中的一員。你們通過自己的才智、勤奮和自律贏得了坐在今天畢業(yè)典禮上的資格,我衷心地祝賀你們。面對(duì)現(xiàn)今橫行于世的犬儒主義,尤其是人們對(duì)整個(gè)法律行業(yè)的負(fù)面看法,我鼓勵(lì)你們不要丟掉做自己想做事時(shí)的那份樂觀、理想以及激情。不忘初心,方得始終。You have proven that you have a lot to offer this world, now you need to prove you can make a difference, whether that be in the courtroom, classroom, NGO or office lead by example because ANYTHINGIS POSSIBLE!I want to share with you some of my experience in the hopes that it encourages you to not accept barriers at any cost.各位同學(xué)已經(jīng)證明你們有能力為這個(gè)世界貢獻(xiàn)良多,但是現(xiàn)在你需要去證明你確實(shí)可以通過努力讓這個(gè)世界變得不同。這種變化可以發(fā)生在法庭上、教室里,也可以發(fā)生在民間組織或是政府部門之中,因?yàn)橐磺薪杂锌赡埽∥蚁牒湍銈兎窒硪恍┪业慕?jīng)歷,希望以此鼓勵(lì)你們面對(duì)挑戰(zhàn)絕不退縮,勇往直前。

      As a teenager, I was sent to a railroad construction site deep in the mountains in Western China.Food was rationed and workload was heavy.However, what made it more unbearable was the lack of knowledge and information.I devoured every piece of paper that had any word on it, like a hungry man.Together with a few co-workers we started a study group called “The Communist Laborer's Night School”, with the few old text books we brought with us, and a radio we used to learn English from VOA and BBC, at the risk of imprisonment for listening to “enemy stations”.當(dāng)我還是一個(gè)十幾歲少年的時(shí)候,我被送到中國(guó)西部的大山區(qū)里修建鐵路。在那里,食物實(shí)行配給制并且工作強(qiáng)度很大,所以我們總是處于饑餓狀態(tài)。但是,更加讓人痛苦的是知識(shí)與信息的缺失。我貪婪地去看每張偶爾得到的寫有字的紙片,如饑似渴。我還和其他幾位工友們成立了一個(gè)“共產(chǎn)主義勞動(dòng)夜校”。我們一同學(xué)習(xí)一些舊課本,冒著被判刑的風(fēng)險(xiǎn)用一臺(tái)收音機(jī)聽“敵國(guó)電臺(tái)”:從“美國(guó)之音”和BBC學(xué)習(xí)英語。After 3 years of hard labor and a head injury, I was given a job in an artillery factory making machine guns.I biked about 10 miles twice a week to learn English taught in the Radio Engineering School of a university in Xi'an.Most of the 200 people quitted the class during the one-year study, and I was one of the dozen remaining, together with the chief engineer of my factory, who later put in a strong recommendation for me to go to college in Beijing, without having ever been to a high school.經(jīng)過三年繁重的勞動(dòng)和一次腦部受傷,我被分配到西安一家兵工廠制造機(jī)關(guān)槍。我每周兩次下班后騎自行車去10英里外一所大學(xué)的無線電工程系學(xué)習(xí)英語。在這一年的學(xué)習(xí)中,200多名學(xué)員中的大多數(shù)并沒有堅(jiān)持。但是我是那堅(jiān)持下來的十幾個(gè)人之一,一同留下來的還有我工廠里的總工程師。他后來在我甚至沒有上過高中的情況下強(qiáng)烈推薦我去北京讀大學(xué)。

      After graduating from both college and law school in BJ, I was sent as an exchange scholar to work in a law firm in California.Boy I remember the cultural shock I had when I first arrived in SF in 1982!There I realized that my knowledge of law was utterly inadequate to deal with international transactions, which I was supposed to teach back in Beijing.I decided to go through the hardship of studying for a JD degree in the US.That started my honey-decades with Duke law, which gave me a full scholarship and a fuller education in American law.從對(duì)外經(jīng)貿(mào)大學(xué)的法學(xué)碩士班畢業(yè)后,我獲得了去加州一家律所實(shí)習(xí)的交換機(jī)會(huì)。我仍然記得1982年當(dāng)我第一次抵達(dá)舊金山時(shí)所能感受到的文化沖擊。在那里,當(dāng)處理一些有關(guān)國(guó)際交易的案子時(shí),我意識(shí)到自己有關(guān)美國(guó)法律的知識(shí)非常匱乏,而這卻是我回國(guó)之后準(zhǔn)備教授的。我決定在美國(guó)咬著牙讀一個(gè)法學(xué)博士學(xué)位。杜克法學(xué)院資助了我全額獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金讓我能夠系統(tǒng)地學(xué)習(xí)美國(guó)法律,從此開啟了我和杜克法學(xué)院長(zhǎng)達(dá)三十年源遠(yuǎn)流長(zhǎng)的甜蜜之旅。

      I was once asked by a hard-struggling law student from China why I seemed so happy and content with my studies then, living mostly in the law library.I answered, if you have experienced the deprivation of knowledge for so long as I have, you would, too, view this place as the heaven of learning.I said that despite the many occasions when a few professors would vote against granting the scholarship to a “red Chinese”, or some fellow students spoke right in my face that they were “abhorred” by the Chinese communist system.When I was later asked of a similar question as a junior associate in the sweat shop of a Wall Street law firm, I happily told the fellow associate that Vladimir Lenin taught me to learn your skills so to dig the grave for capitalism.曾經(jīng)有一個(gè)深受法學(xué)院學(xué)習(xí)壓力痛苦折磨的中國(guó)學(xué)生問過我這樣一個(gè)問題:“你幾乎成天以圖書館為家,為什么還那么開心和滿足?”我回答說,如果你像我那樣,經(jīng)歷過如此之長(zhǎng)的缺乏精神食糧的歲月,那么你同樣會(huì)把這地方當(dāng)做是求知的天堂。當(dāng)然求學(xué)過程中也有很多不盡人意之處,比如有那么幾位教授反對(duì)給我這個(gè)來自紅色中國(guó)的人發(fā)獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金,或者有幾位學(xué)生曾當(dāng)面對(duì)我說他憎恨中國(guó)的共產(chǎn)主義制度。我后來在華爾街一所律所里當(dāng)律師的時(shí)候,也被問到這個(gè)問題時(shí),我很開心地回答道,列寧教導(dǎo)我要學(xué)習(xí)西方的先進(jìn)知識(shí),才可以為資本主義挖掘墳?zāi)埂?/p>

      The ensuing 1987 financial crisis jolted me to an opposite direction, though.I was so fascinated by the intricacies of the capitalistic financing machines that I decided to study it carefully and try to transplant it to my own home country.I went back to China in the summer of 1988, after visiting most of the stock exchanges in Europe and some in Asia, in a seemingly fool-hardy effort to persuade the Chinese government forthe establishment of a capital market.然而,隨后1987年的金融危機(jī)卻將我拉向了另外一個(gè)方向。我對(duì)這精妙的資本主義籌融資機(jī)器體系產(chǎn)生了巨大的興趣,所以我決定認(rèn)真仔細(xì)地研究它并且將這架機(jī)器移植到我自己的祖國(guó)。在自費(fèi)調(diào)研過歐洲以及亞洲大部分證券交易所后,我于1988年夏天回國(guó),以近乎愚公移山的努力說服中國(guó)政府建立中國(guó)的資本市場(chǎng)。

      Among all the people who were skeptical of our idea, was an American consul in Beijing.After suspiciously questioning my intention to have gone back to China and hearing my explanation about my ambition to start the stock market there, he said, this is all BS, and tore up my application forms.This is in early 1990, when I applied to come to teach a short course at Duke law.By the end of that year, we have helped the opening of two stock exchanges, the SHSE and the SZSE, which have a combined market cap of several trillion dollars today.Two years after, the unintended consequences started to show and the central government finally adopted our proposal of setting up the regulatory agency and persuaded me to join it.在所有質(zhì)疑我這個(gè)想法的人群中,有一位是駐北京的美國(guó)領(lǐng)事。在懷疑我回中國(guó)的動(dòng)機(jī)并且聽完我想要在那里建立股票市場(chǎng)的想法后,他說,這完全是扯淡,并且撕碎了我美國(guó)簽證的申請(qǐng)表。記得那是1990年初,我當(dāng)時(shí)去申請(qǐng)美國(guó)簽證回杜克法學(xué)院教幾周課。當(dāng)年年底,中國(guó)自己的兩個(gè)證券交易所就建成了:上海證交所和深圳證交所。今天,這兩家證券交易所交易的股票總市值達(dá)到上萬億美金。隨后的兩年,中央政府最終接受了我們的提議并啟動(dòng)成立了證券市場(chǎng)監(jiān)管機(jī)構(gòu),并且勸說我加入其中。Being a regulator is like being a matchmaker, when the marriage is successful, the couple would think it's their own good fortune, will be busy enjoying themselves and very seldom grateful to you.But if anything goes wrong, then both sides blame you for it.I got just that sort of treatment, blamed all the time, for good or bad reasons.I was yanked out of the agency to run the newly established Social Security Fund in 2003, and then, 4 and half years later, the Sovereign Wealth Fund.After almost 7 years serving as an investor, I'm finally relieved of my duty and allowed to retire to do what I love the most, i.e., working with young people every day, teaching and, more importantly, learning.監(jiān)管者的角色就好比是媒人,如果做媒成功,男女雙方會(huì)認(rèn)為這是他們自己的好運(yùn)氣,沉溺于愛河中而沒有時(shí)間來感謝你。但一旦失敗,雙方都會(huì)指責(zé)你的不是。我就獲得了那樣的待遇:不管是什么樣的原因,總是被罵。2003年,我被調(diào)離證監(jiān)會(huì)成為新成立的全國(guó)社會(huì)保障基金的負(fù)責(zé)人,四年之后,又成為中投公司的總經(jīng)理。在七年的投資生涯之后,我總算可以卸下身上的責(zé)任并且獲準(zhǔn)退休去干我最想干的事情——那就是每天和年輕人在一起,教授他們,更重要的是,向他們學(xué)習(xí)。

      Why do I want to tell you the boring story of a personal life? Because I can't help offering you my advice, having made so many mistakes and suffered so many detours.Here are the few things I learned in life in the vain hope that you would avoid them.為什么我想向你們講述我自己沒有多大意思的人生經(jīng)歷?因?yàn)槲以诜高^如此多錯(cuò)誤、走過無數(shù)次彎路之后,忍不住想提供給你們一些我的建議。下面就是我的一點(diǎn)人生體會(huì),希望你們能夠有所感悟,避免走我所走過的彎路。

      1.Different views, different people, different culture and different ideology may not necessarily a bad thing.They just teach you to be more tolerant and open minded.Vive la difference, as the French would say.1.不同的思想、不同的人、不同的文化以及不同的意識(shí)形態(tài)或許并不是一件壞事。他們只是在教你更加寬容,保持更加開放的心態(tài)。就像法國(guó)人說的那樣,Vive la difference(差別萬歲)。

      2.Taking hardship is not necessarily a bad thing, it may pay in the long run.Of course in the long run we will all be dead, as Maynard Keynes said.And that's why we need the next suggestion.2.吃苦或許不是一件壞事,總有一天你會(huì)獲得回報(bào)。當(dāng)然凱恩斯也說過:從長(zhǎng)遠(yuǎn)來看,我們都會(huì)死的。但這也就是為什么我們需要下一個(gè)建議。

      3.Taking the road less travelled is not necessarily a bad thing, it just makes your life much more interesting.Let's try to live an interesting and significant life.3.另辟蹊徑走自己的路或許不是一件壞事,這只是意味著我們的生活會(huì)更加精彩。讓我們嘗試去過一種精彩并且有意義的生活。

      4.Setting high material demands in this world today is not necessarily a good thing, as it may keep you from realizing your ideals or keeping your vision.在當(dāng)今社會(huì),對(duì)物質(zhì)生活的過分追求或許不是一件好事。因?yàn)檫@將使你遠(yuǎn)離夢(mèng)想,不能開拓你的視野。

      I want to leave you today with the words of the great American poet, Max Ehrmann because he said it infinitely better than I can.Hope you guys can remember this as you go forth.最后,我想送給你們偉大的美國(guó)詩人Max Ehrmann的詩篇,他講得比我好多了。我希望你們?cè)谇靶械牡缆飞希軌蛴涀∵@首詩。

      Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.Speak your truth quietly and clearly;and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant;they too have their story.Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.Keep interested in your own career, however humble;it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.Exercise caution in your business affairs;for the world is full of trickery.But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;many persons strive for high ideals;and everywhere life is full of heroism.Be yourself.Especially, do not feign affection.Neither be cynical about love;for in the face of all aridity anddisenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentlewith yourself.You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;you have a right to be here.And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.Therefore be at peace with universe, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.Be cheerful.Strive to be happy.在嘈雜和匆忙中,平靜地前行吧,也別忘了在寂靜中,能找到多好的安寧。

      可以的話,盡量不放棄原則而與所有人和睦相處。

      細(xì)語清晰地說出你的肺腑之言,也聆聽別人的說話,別人的話縱然又枯燥又無知,總會(huì)有他們的故事。

      避開大聲說話和好斗的人;他們是擾亂心性的人。

      不要跟其他人比較,否則可能變得虛榮自負(fù)或忿忿不平,因?yàn)橐欢ㄓ腥吮饶銈ゴ螅惨欢ㄓ腥吮饶忝煨 ?/p>

      享受計(jì)劃,也享受成就。無論自己的事業(yè)有多卑微,維持對(duì)它的興趣;

      在一生多變的命運(yùn)中,它是你真正擁有的東西。

      謹(jǐn)慎處理生意,因?yàn)檫@世界充斥著欺詐。

      但是,不要因此而看不見人間美德; 很多人為崇高理想而奮斗,生命到處都有英勇的事跡。

      做你自己。

      尤其不要虛情假意。但也不要把愛視為虛偽;

      因?yàn)楸M管生命有時(shí)枯燥乏味、有時(shí)令人迷醉,愛,卻如青草般日久常在。不輕視因年老而獲得的閱歷,并得體地舍棄年輕時(shí)擁有的東西。培育心靈上的力量,以面對(duì)突然而來的不幸。

      但不要杞人憂天以致心神不寧。眾多的恐懼,源自疲乏和孤獨(dú)。要既不踰矩,又善待自己。

      你是宇宙的孩子,身份不次于樹木和星星;

      身處這里是你的權(quán)利。不管你是否明白它的奧秘,毫無疑問宇宙在按其規(guī)律展現(xiàn)自己。因此,不管在你心中宇宙是什么模樣,和他和睦相處吧。

      也不管你怎樣勞累和胸懷大志,在生命的煩囂和困惑中,要保持心靈上的安寧。

      不管經(jīng)歷了多少偽善、苦役、和破碎的夢(mèng),世界依然是美麗的。要保持輕松開朗。要努力讓自己快樂。

      我的演講也接近尾聲了。對(duì)你們,我有最后一個(gè)希望,也是我在21歲時(shí)就一直在思考的。畢業(yè)那天坐在我身邊的朋友將是我終身的朋友。他們是我的孩子的教父母,是我在遇到麻煩是可以求助的人,是當(dāng)我用他們的姓名作為食死徒的名字而不會(huì)起訴我的朋友(譯者注:食死徒是哈利波特中人物在此指羅琳的朋友不會(huì)因?yàn)樗盟麄兊拿侄馄鹪V)。
