      28.【答案】 A

A:牌子;B:

      Passage Two

In 2000, with little but a bar and a church left to make it a destination, tiny St.James, Nebraska, was taken off state highway maps. Then the church closed, and the small farm village in the state's northeast comer looked set to just disappear. Thanks to five devoted women, it didn't.In May 2001, after meeting with staff from the Center for Rural Affairs, the friends--Louise Guy, Vicky Koch, Jeanette Pinkelman, Mary Rose Pinkelman and Violet Pinkelman--opened a weekend market for vendors(小商販)to sell handcrafts and local food.“We felt like, what can we do to bring the community together?” says Mary Rose Pinkelman.“We decided to make a place to sell local goods.” They set up shop in the church school, which, though closed for nearly 40 years, had been well maintained. The first weekend, 16 vendors took over an old classroom. The result was ah instant hit.Today, the market draws up to 70 vendors--who sell such items as homemade jellies, baked goods, hand-woven rugs, and farm-grown produce--and what Pinkelman calls an unexpected number of visitors. In the process, the market has made St.James a destination again, putting it back on the state road map.【翻譯】由于五位婦女的共同努力,一個從公路版圖上消失的小村莊又重新返回到地圖上。

40.According to Paragraph 1, what fate was St.James, Nebraska suffering?

      A.The replacement of the church school.B.The disappearance from highway maps.C.The closedown of the bar.D.The set-up of a market.【答案】 B

      41.St.James in this passage is

A.a small village B.a little farm

C.a tiny city D.a little town

      【答案】 A

      42.What does the underlined phrase ~'an instant hit“(Paragraph 3)mean?

      A.A fast blow.B.A sudden beat.C.A big strike.D.A quick success.【答案】 D

43.St.James has been put back to the state road map due to

A.the efforts of five women B.the efforts of the Center for Rural Affairs

C.the vendors in the local place D.the unexpected number of visitors

      【答案】 A

      Passage Three

Romeo and Juliet was probably written in 1595, when Shakespeare was a young, successful playwright. He had already written comedies and history plays, but had not yet developed his skill at tragedy. The power of fate is strong in Shakespeare's play.Chance and evil eventually join to bring tragedy.Chance involves Romeo in a murder;chance prevents a message from reaching Romeo in time;chance brings about a deadly meeting in a cemetery. Many Elizabethans were followers of astrology(星相術(shù))and believed that the stars could control events. Thus, Romeo and Juliet are referred to as ”star-crossed lovers“ whose stars doomed(命中注定)them to disaster.Elizabethans also had a concept of fate in the person of Dame Fortune(命運女神).By spinning her wheel, she could raise the state of a beggar or lower that of a king. One of the fascinations of Shakespeare is the way in which he put these ideas into the play. One of the most difficult things to decide about this play is the question of responsibility.Did irresistible fate bring tragedy to Romeo and Juliet, or were they themselves to blame? The fact that this question is not resolved by the author also helps to make Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet a fascinating work.【翻譯】莎士比亞的悲劇羅密歐與朱麗葉.

44.According to Paragraph 1, Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet

A.when he succeeded in comedies and history plays

B.after he had developed his skill in tragedy

C.before he wrote comedies and history plays

D.when he was no longer young

      【答案】 A

      45.According to the passage, chance

      A.involves Juliet in a murder

B.sends Romeo and Juliet into evil-doing

C.causes late arrival of a message for Romeo

D.leads to a happy meeting between Romeo and Juliet

46.The passage indicates that Shakespeare put into Romeo and Juliet.A.historical events B.Elizabethan beliefs

C.his personal experience D.political issues at the time

47.What is unresolved about this play is

A.who is responsible for the tragedy

B.whether Romeo and Juliet are tragic characters

C.what the most fascinating element of the play is

D.how tragic fate can be avoided

      【答案】 A

      Passage Four

Friends become a child's chosen family. If his social life is going well, he gains confidence. If he has trouble connecting, it hurts and can make him feel sad and withdrawn and lonely.1.Help your child communicate.Naturally outgoing kids have an easier time expressing their interest in other children than shy ones do.But you can help build this skill through practice.Ask your child about his favorite games and toys.Praise him for specifics when he shows interest in other people: ”You were so nice to let Roger talk about his little dog.I am proud of you.“

2.Keep play short and sweet.Parents should keep early play dates short, so no one gets too tired and everyone has fun.Schedule the next one soon after that, so kids can quickly build on their comfort foundation.3.Know your child. If your child is bossy, talk with him and agree beforehand on which toys will be shared and which ones should be put away because your child just can't seem to share them.If you have a shy child, match him with a younger child so he has a chance to be the leader.4.Help your child help others.Encourage your child to be a better friend by helping him include others in play.If you see someone being excluded, don't ignore it.This is an opportunity to work on your child's ability to understand others.”Rachel is being left out. That must make her feel very sad.Can you think of a way to include her in the game?“

5.Help your kids help themselves. If your child is the one who's being ignored or treated badly, teach him to speak up.【文章大意】主要介紹了如何幫助你的孩子交朋友。

48.Which Word can best describe a child who is good at connecting?

      A.Bossy.B.Confident.C.Proud.D.Showy.【答案】 B

49.According to the passage, parents can help their children communicate by.A.showing their own interest in other children

B.encouraging their interest in other children

      C.playing games with them

      D.buying them more toys

50.The phrase ”left out“ in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to”.“

      A.neglected B.criticised

      C.not included D.not respected

51.What is probably the best title for the passage?

A.How to Help Your Child Help Others B.How to Educate a Shy Child

C.How to Communicate with Your Child D.How to Help Your Child Make Friends

      Passage Five

Memory is the ability to keep track of things that have happened in the past.Memory really is learning. One needs memory to ride a bicycle.A dog needs to remember if it is to Come when called.Memory is said to be stored in the brain as a ”memory trace(記憶痕)." What makes up this trace is not known. Some scientists believe that certain chemical substances may carry certain memories. For example, one substance, when given to rats, causes them to fear the dark.Other research into memory has to do with how the brain works.Psychologists use three means to find out how a person remembers. For example, give a person a grocery list.Let the person memorize the list, then put it away. The most natural way to find out how much a person remembers of the grocery list is to ask what he or she remembers. This is called the method of recall.Another method is called recognition.Give the person another grocery list.Ask him or her to choose items on the first list from the items that are on only the second list.Often a person will be able to recognize things that he or she cannot recall.A third method of finding how much a person remembers is called relearning. Here the person is asked to read over the first list. The person will probably learn the list the second time faster than he did the first time. The difference in the time it takes to relearn the list is thought of as a measure of how much a person has remembered. One way of remembering something is to repeat it many times.Interest is very important.Boring lists of facts are much more difficult to remember than something that we understand and are interested in.Motivation, or wanting to do something, is also important.Motivation is linked with reward. For example, a hungry animal quickly learns how to do something if that action gets the animal food.In humans, wanting to learn is often motivation. The praise of a teacher or the knowledge that an answer is correct is rewarding.【文章大意】關(guān)于記憶力的一篇研究報告。

52.We can learn from the 2nd paragraph that.A.bad memories may cause rats to fear the dark

B.it is hard to tell what a memory trace consists of

      C.chemical substances carry certain memories

D.memory is stored in the brain as a substance

53.The way to pick out the items on the first list from the second is known as.A.recognition B.recall C.memorization D.relearning

      【答案】 A

54.What is considered as a measure of how much one has remembered?

A.The length of the list.B.The type of list items.C.The time difference of relearning.D.The time difference of brain working.【答案】 C

第三段的最后一句,就直接告訴考生答案了:“The difference in the time it takes to relearn the list is thought of as a measure of how much a person has remembered.此句中的...is thought of as...就相當于...is regarded as/is considered。

55.A good way to train an animal to do something quickly is to.A.make the action easy B.praise it in words

C.reward it with food D.weaken its motivation

What about you

Sounds great

Say, why don’t you come with us

Do you mean it

      VI.Writing(25 points)

It is still sometimes difficult to understand why those between ages 10 and 18 would endanger their lives by joining armed forces or rebel groups and become fighting soldiers. The recently published book, Young Soldier, Why They Choose to Fight By Rachel Brett and Irma Specht, tries to find an answer. There is no doubt that children fight in most armed conflicts today. While international attention focuses largely on those who are forced into battles, thousands more enlist(應征入伍)voluntarily. In an attempt to to understand the young who take up arms, Brett and Specht interviewed 53 boy and girl soldiers and ex-soldiers from around the world, Afghanistan , Colombia, the Republic of the Congo for example. All interviewees were involved with armed forces or armed groups before the age of 18 and all classified themselves as volunteers. What these two field officers heard is “I joined involuntarily-if you have nothing, you volunteer for the army”.Other reasons young people gave are self-defense, revenge, poverty, and unemployment. But while it is common knowledge that most child soldiers come from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds, Young Soldiers shows that the issue is far more complex. Many poor children do not join the army. The environmental, educational, social, cultural, and highly personal factors determine whether someone decide to join up or not.The battlefield is not a place for children. One young soldier described being there as “too sad an experience”.The authors hope that by understanding why teenagers join up, those child soldiers should know how to discourage others from the same tragedy.1.Young Soldiers, Why They Choose to Fight is ______.A.a book B.a magazine C.a news report D.a TV program

2.According to paragraph 3, Brett and Specht’s interviewees _______.A.joined armed forces under 18

      Passage Five

It’s interesting that technology often works as a servant for us, yet frequently we become a servant to it.E-mail is a useful tool but many feel controlled by this new vehicle. The average businessperson is getting about 80-e-mails per day and many feel that about 80% of the messages in their “In Box” are of little or no value. So, I have four suggestions to help you to become better at “Easing E-mail”.1.Get off the lists. The best way to deal with a problem is to never have it.If you are receiving a lot of unwanted e-mails, ask to be removed from the various lists. This would include your inclusion in unwanted “cc” lists.2.“Unlisted address”.Just like getting an “unlisted” telephone number that you share only with those whom you want to give direct access, you might want to get a separate e-mail address only for the important communications you wish to receive.3.Check it once or twice per day. Many I speak with are becoming chained to their email server, monitoring incoming email on a continuous basis.Maybe this is because e-mail creates its own sense of urgency, but most of the communications are not all that urgent.I respond to them a couple of times per day.4.Deal with it.As you open each e-mail do one of the following:

a.If it requires a quick response, respond to it and delete it.b.If it requires a response but is not the best use of your time, try to find someone else to do it.c.If it is going to take any serious amount of time to respond, schedule it for action in your Day Planner and then download the message, save it, or print it out for future action.I personally receive approximately 250 e-mails per day and by practicing the suggestions above, I can handle that volume in about an hour, taking advantage of this fantastic tool but not being controlled by it to the distraction of more important tasks in my day.1.The passage is about ______.A.how to check e-mails

      B.how to collect e-mails

C.how to deal with your daily e-mails

      D.how to deal with 80% valueless e-mails

2.If you get unwanted e-mails, the best you can do is to______.A.make a list of them

      B.put them into “cc” lists

C.send them to a special address

      D.delete them from different lists

3.For the important communications, the writer suggests that you______.A.have a direct access for them

B.have several e-mail servers for them

C.get an unlisted phone number for them

      D.get a special e-mail address for them

4.To avoid being chained by the coming e-mails, what you can do is to ______.A.respond urgent ones only

B.reply all of them at the same time

C.handle them a couple of times daily

D.keep replying e-mails all day long

5.To deal with an e-mail you get, you can do the following EXCEPT______.A.downloading every e-mail before you reply

B.responding right away if it’s urgent

C.scheduling it for later reply if it takes much time

D.asking someone else to reply it if it’s not at your convenience

      Passage Six

During the Christmas shopping rush in London, the interesting story was reported of a tramp who, apparently though no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well-known chain store late on Christmas Eve.No doubt the store was crowded with last-minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home.Probably all the proper security checks were made before the store was locked and they left to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last-minute Christmas presents. However ridiculous that may be, our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of it.There was food, drink, bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must also have been television sets and radios.Though it was not reported if he took advantages of these facilities, when the shop reopened he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him.He seem to have been a man of good humor as indeed tramps very commonly are.Everyone else was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no good reason why he should not do the same.He yielded himself cheerfully, and was taken by the police.Perhaps he had had a better Christmas than usual. He was sent to prison for seven days. The judge awarded no compensation to the chain store for the food and drink our tramp had consumed. They had, in his opinion, already received valuable free publicity from the story revealed in the newspaper and on television.Perhaps the judge had had a good Christmas, too.1.The tramp was locked in the store ______.A.for 7 days B.on purpose C.by accident D.for security reasons

5.The judge didn’t award compensation to the chain store because ______.A.the store was responsible for what happened

B.the report of the event benefited the store a lot

C.the tramp had stolen nothing of value

      D.the tramp was penniless

      Passage Seven

If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research result of professor Faulkner, who says that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise and as a result, we are ageing unnecessarily soon.Professor Faulkner wanted to find out why healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and to reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of ageing could be slow down.He set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and occupations.Computer technology enabled him to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intelligence and emotion, and determine the human character.Contraction of front and side partswas observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and seventy-year-olds.Faulkner concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to slow the contractionand after that I don’t remember any more.”

      Passage Nine

Long after the 1998 World Cup was won, disappointed fans were still cursing the disputed refereeing(裁判)decisions that denied victory to their team.A researcher was appointed to study the performance of some top referees. The researcher organized an experimental tournament(錦標賽)involving four youth teams. Each match lasted an hour divided into three periods of 20 minutes during which different referees were in charge.Observers noted down the referees’ errors, of which there were 61 over the tournament.Converted to a standard match of 90 minutes, each referee made almost 23 mistakes, a remarkable high number. The researcher then studied the videotapes to analyse the matches in detail.Surprisingly, he found that errors were more likely when the referees were close to the incident. When the officials got it right, they were, on average, 17 meters away from the action. The average distance in the case of errors was 12 meters. The research shows the optimum(最佳的)distance is about 20 meters. There also seemed to be an optimum speed.Correct decisions came when the referees were moving at a speed of about 2 meters per second. The average speed for errors was 4 meters per second. If FIFA, football’s international ruling body, wants to improve the standard of refereeing at the next World Cup, it should encourage referees to keep their eyes on the action from a distance, rather than rushing to keep up with the ball, the researcher argues. He also says that FIFA’ s insistence that referees should retire at age 45 may be misguided. If keeping up with the action is not so important, their physical condition is less critical.1.The experiment conducted by the researcher was meant to ______.A.set a standard for football refereeing

B.reexamine the rules for football refereeing

C.analyse the causes of errors made by football referees

2.The number of refereeing errors in the experimental matches was ______.A.quite unexpected B.slightly above average

C.as high as in a standard match D.higher than in the 1998 World Cup

3.The finding of the experiment show that ______.A.errors are less likely when a referee stays in one spot

B.the more slowly the referee runs the more likely will errors occur

C.the farther the referees is from the incident the fewer the errors

D.errors are more likely when a referee keeps close to the ball

4.The word “official”(Line2,Para.4)most probably refers to ______.A.the researchers involved in the experiment

B.the referees of the football tournament

C.the observers at the site of the experiment

D.the inspectors of the football tournament

5.What is one of the possible conclusions of the experiment?

A.Age should not be the chief consideration in choosing a football referee.B.A football referee should be as young and energetic as possible.C.The ideal retirement age for an experienced football referee is 45.D.An experienced football referee can do well even when in poor physical condition.Passage Ten

“I love you, Bob.” “I love you, too, Nancy.” It was 2 a.m.and I was hearing my parents’ voices through the thin wall separating my bedroom from theirs.Their loving words were sweet, touching-and surprising. My parents married on September 14, 1940, after a brief dating. She was nearing 30 and knew it was time to start a family. The handsome, well-educated man who came by the office where she worked looked like a good bet.He was attracted by her figure, her blue eyes. The romance didn’t last long.Seeds of difference grew almost immediately. She liked to travel;he hated the thought. He loved golf;she did not.He was a Republican, she a loyal Democrat. They fought at the bridge table, at the dinner table, over money, over the perceived shortcomings of their respective in-laws.There was a hope that they would change once they retired, and the angry winds did calm somewhat, but what remained changed itself into bright, hard bitterness.“I always thought we’d ?” my mother would begin, before launching into a precise listing of my father’s faults. The complaints were recited so often, I can repeat them by heart today. As he listened, my father would say angry threats and curses in a low voice. It wasn’t the happiest marriage, but as their 60th anniversary approached, my sister and I decided to throw a party.Sixty years was a long time, after all;why not try to make the best of things? We’d provide the cake, the balloons, the toasts, and they’d follow one rule: no fighting. The agreement was honored. We had a wonderful day. When we thought back, we found it was an important celebration, because soon after, things began to change for my parents.1.Bob married Nancy because of ______.A.her nice appearance B.her good education

What can you do to recall your dreams more often and interpret them more clearly? The experts offer these suggestions:

Develop an idea. Before you go to sleep, consciously think about a topic or a person you’d like to dream about.Raise a question that’s troubling you and see how your dream responds to it.Keep track.Next to your bed, place a pen and some paper, or a tape recorder or laptop, to record your dreams as soon as you wake up.Try to wake up naturally, without the help of an alarm clock or barking dog that can interrupt

your dream cycle. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to sleep in during the week, begin your dream journey on a weekend or during a vacation.Wake up slowly. For the first moment after you wake up, lie still and keep your eyes closed, because your dream may be connected to your body position while you slept.Try to recall the dream and then store it in your memory by giving it a name like “Late for an exam” or “My Date with Ashley Judd”.When you rise, immediately write down as many images, feelings and impressions as you can.Connect the dots.To better interpret your dreams, try to make connections between you recalled dreams and recent events.Do you recognize people from the present or past? Can you detect any themes from the dream? Look for patterns over several dreams that might help explain an individual dream.Change the outcome. If you have nightmares happening again and again that make it difficult to sleep, try to change the endings.Once you wake up from a bad dream, imagine a change in the action to create a more positive outcome. If you are trapped, try to fly.In your dream, you can do what you want!

Passage One Perhaps the most important defining characteristic of a human being is culture. The term culture as used here is not limited to operas, paintings, and other artistic endeavors. These are seen by anthropologists(人類學家)as examples of culture: culture itself is the customary manner in which human groups learn to organize their behavior and thought in relation to their environment.Defined in this manner, culture has three principal aspects: behavioral, perceptual and material. The behavioral component refers to how people act, especially how they interact with each other. In child rearing(養(yǎng)育), for example, parents and children tend to interact in a relatively patterned fashion. Then there is the manner of perception, the ways people perceive the world. For example, parents have a limited range of ideas about how they should act, and what significance parenthood carries in the scheme of things. Finally, there is the material component of culture — the physical objects that we produce. Most of what goes into making up culture is a result of learning — modifying behavior in response to experience within an environment.Learning is practically universal among organisms. But no other organism has a greater capacity for learning than a human, or depends as much on learned behavior for its survival. While the survival of most other organisms is to some extent safeguarded by instincts, humans rely heavily on culture for their survival.People must learn how to live in a particular social and physical setting, biology playing but a minimal(最小限度的)role. The ideas and modes of behavior that constitute culture are transmitted largely by a complex system of symbols that includes language.Humans have evolved an extremely complex system of communication that is unique to our species.Without it the creation of human culture as we know it would be impossible.B 1.What is the definition of culture by anthropologists? Sample Test Part I Reading Comprehension(35 minutes,40 points)Directions: There are four reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).After you read a passage you should decide on the best choice and then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.A fire drill is, to put it mildly, an inconvenient exercise at the best of times.A fire drill at 2:00 in the morning in terrible weather conditions, like the one we had on Thursday night and Friday morning last, is incomparably more inconvenient. This is why writing this note to thank you all most sincerely for your excellent co-operation and the spirit with which you endured the inconvenience.A fire drill is not an idle exercise. It is an extremely serious one and can, in fact, save lives in the long run.Last week’ fire drill has already reyealed a number of important things regarding fire precautions in the Hall. For instance, there seem to exit a number of “deaf spots” in the Hall, namely, the two rooms in Purser House and some rooms in the Bottom corridor.I have no reason to doubt that residents from these areas could not hear the alarm.I shall request an immediate examination of this problem.I should, also, remind you that it is a requirement that fire drills should be regularly carried out(at least two in every one year)and each resident should be made fully aware of this and obliged to take part. All residents must take fire precautions with the seriousness they deserve.Failure to do so can result bin fines and expulsion(驅(qū)逐)from the Hall.Thank you again for your co-operation.1.The last fire drill caused much more inconvenience because_________.A)it was in bad weather B)there were “deaf spots” C)a big fire started D)it was at the weekend 2.The phrase “in the long run”(L.2,Part.2)means_________.A)effectively B)endlessly C)eventually D)efficiently 3.Some people did not make their appearance at the last drill because_______.A)they were deaf B)they could not hear the alarm C)nobody waked them up D)they refused to leave their rooms 4.Afire drill is extremely important according to the writer for_________.A)it is a good physical exercise B)it cultivates people’s endurance C)it is a legal requirement D)it can save lives in case of a fire 5.Which of the following was NOT stated by the author? A)A fire drill is very important and useful.B)The last fire drill received inactive co-operation from the residents.C)Those who do not take fire precautions will be fined and driven out.D)It has been made a rule that fire drills will be performed regularly.Passage Two Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage Accidents are caused;they don’t just happen. The reason may be easy to see: a shelf out of reach, a patch of ice on the misfortune—frustration, tiredness or just bad temper—that show what the accident really is, a sort of attack on oneself.Road accidents, for example, happen frequently after a family quarrel, and we all know people who are accident-prone, so often at odds with themselves and the world that they seem to cause accidents for themselves and others.By definition, an accident is something you can not predict or avoid, and the idea which used to be current, that the majority of road accidents are caused by a minority of criminally careless drivers, is not supported by insurance statistics. These show that most accidents involve ordinary motorists in a moments of carelessness or thoughtlessness. It is not always clear, either, what sort of conditions make people more likely to have an accident. For instance, the law requires all factories to take safety precautions and most companies have safety committees to make sure the regulations are observed, but still, every day in Britain, some fifty thousand men and women are injured from work due to accidents. These accidents are largely the result of human error or misjudgment—noise and fatigue, boredom or worry are possible factors which contribute to this.Doctors who work in factories have found that those who drink too much, usually people who have a high anxiety level, run three times the normal risk of accidents at work.6.The passage suggests that________.A)Accidents are usually caused by psychological factors.B)Accidents mostly result from slippery roads.C)Drinkers run three times the normal risk of accidents in factories.D)About 50 000people lose their lives at work in Britain every day.7.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a factor of accidents? A)Mood.B)Tiredness.C)Carelessness D)Weather 8.The word “accidents-prone”(L.2 Para.2)means________.A)likely to have accidentsB)injured in accidents C)possible to die in accidents D)responsible for road accidents 9.What can we infer about the author’ opinion of accidents? A)Safety precautions are of little use in accidents.B)Many accidents can and should be avoided.C)Factory accidents , unlike road accidents, are inevitable.D)Most road accidents are caused by just a few careless drivers.10.The best title for the passage would be __________.A)Accidents and Anxiety B)How to Deal with Accidents on Road and in Factories C)Human Factors in Accidents D)How to Prevent Accidents on Road and in Factories Passage Three Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. Is language, like food, a basic human need? Judging from the result of the violent experiment by a German King, Frederick II, in the 13th century, it may be.Hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent. All the infants died before the first year. But clearly there was more than language deprivation here. What was missing was good mothering.Without good mothering, in the first year of life especially, the capacity to survive is seriously affected.Today no much violent deprivation exists as that by Frederick II.Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the signals of the infant, whose brain is programmed to map up language rapidly. There are critical times, it seems, when children learn more readily. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring language skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again.Linguists(語言學家)suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ.Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about Man’s brain compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of , say, a teddy-bear(玩具熊)with the sound pattern “teddy-bear”.But speech has to be stimulated, and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child’s babbling(牙牙學語), grasping, crying, smiling, and responds to them.Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals.Sensitivity to the child’s non-verbal signals is essential to the growth and development language.11.Frederick II’s experiment was violent because_________.A)he wanted to prove children are born with ability to speak B)he ignored the importance of mothering to the infant C)he was unkind to the nurse D)he wanted his nurses to say no mother tongue 12.The reason some children are backward in speaking today that_________.A)their mothers do not respond to their attempts to speak B)their mothers are not intelligent enough to help them C)they do not listen carefully to their mothers D)their brains have to absorb too much language at once.13.By “critical times” in Paragraph 3 the author means__________.A)difficult periods in the child’s life

B)moments when the child becomes critical to its mother C)important stages in the child’s development D)times when mothers often neglect their children 14.Which of the following in NOT implied in the passage? A)Ability to learn to speak a language is inborn in man B)Children do not need to be encouraged to learn to speak C)Early language starters are not necessarily highly intelligent D)Most children learn their language in definite stages 15.If the mother does not respond to her child’s signals_________.A)the child will never be able to speak properly B)the child will stop giving out signals C)the child will invent a language of his own D)the child will make little effort to speak Passage Four Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.Americans who remember “the good old days” are not alone in complaining about the educational system in this country.Immigrants(移民)complain ,too.Lately a German friend was filled with anger when he learned that the mathematics test given to his son on his first day as a college freshman included multiplication and division.Japanese businessmen in Los Angeles send their children to private schools staffed by teachers imported from Japan to learn mathematics at Japanese levels, generally considered at least a year more advanced than the level here. But I wonder: If American education is so poor, why is it that this is still the country of innovation(創(chuàng)新)? When I was 12 in Indonesia, I had to memorize the name of all the world’s major cities, from Kabul to Karachi. At the same age, my son, who was brought up by a Californian, thought that Buenos Aires was Spanish for good food. However, unlike children of his age in Asia and Europe, my son had studied creative geography. When he was only 6, he drew a map of the route that he traveled to get to school, including the streets, the traffic signs and the houses that he passed.Dissatisfied American parents forget that in this country their children are able to experiment freely with ideas;without this they will not really be able to think or to believe in themselves.Critics of American education cannot grasp one thing: freedom.America, I think, is the only country that extends even to children the license to freely speak, write and be creative. Our public education certainly is not perfect, but it is a great deal better than any other.I think I have found the answer to my question.16.From the text we learn that_________.A)both Americans and immigrants are dissatisfied with the quality of American education B)the author shares the general idea that American education is worse than education in many other countries C)Japanese schools in America require their American teachers to teach mathematics at Japanese levels D)the author’s German friend was a little displeased because the mathematics test for his son was too easy.17.Which of the following is NOT true? A)The author most probably was an immigrant from Asia and received some school education there.B)Buenos Aires must be the name of a city, as are Kabul and Karachi.C)Children in other countries are not likely to learn creative geography.D)The knowledge of geography of the author’s son shows that American education is poor.18.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A)If children are not allowed to experiment freely with ideas they won’t grow up independent and creative.B)Most Americans think the present American educational system is not as good as it used to be.C)Private schools run by Japanese businessmen maintain a higher level than American public schools.D)Americans are more innovative than other people in the world.19.In the last paragraph the author says, “I have found the answer to my question.” What is the question?

A)Is Japanese education better than American education? B)Why do Japanese businessmen send their children to Japanese-staffed schools? C)Why was my son not taught enough geographic knowledge? D)Is American education really worse than education in other countries? 20.What would be the best title for this passage? How can he have enough energy to overcome all the difficulties on his way towards success? Only with a sound body may one get a chance to enjoy the better life provided by his wealth because health ensure wealth but not vice versa. Therefore, health is the basis for attaining wealth.Even if one is born into a rich family, wealth alone cannot make him happiness.Imagine a rich man who can do nothing but stay in bed.How can he enjoy his life? What can his money do for him? So long as one is healthy, there are always chances for him to attain everything including wealth.
