“Truman’s World” review Introduction
Truman Burbank(Jim)is the star of the most popular show in the history of television.For 10,909 days, it has been on the air, using 5000 cameras to show every moment in every day of the life of one man.The public loves it--there are Truman addicts who go to sleep with the TV on and who have sets installed in the bathroom so they don't miss anything when they're taking a bath.Every individual in “The Truman Show” is an actor with one important exception: the lead character himself.For, while everyone around Truman is playing a part, he is cheerfully ignorant about the truth.He thinks this is all real, and his obliviousness to the situation gives the program its core appeal--that there's nothing counterfeit about Truman.One day, however, when a former member of the cast sneaks back onto the set with a warning for the star, Truman begins to suspect that appearances can be deceiving.(James Berardinelli [OL].The Truman show.Retrieved.14 Mar.2008

----A Brief Comment on The Truman Show
Abstract: The Truman Show1 deserves spectacular appreciation for its unique approach—intercutting shots between program of Truman and “real life” footage of the director and spectators.The specialty of presentation sufficiently lays out Escapism in Post-Modernism layer by layer.Followed a brief introduction about the intercutting approach in this movies and Escapism, this paper concentrates on the cause, manifestation and influence of Escapism from the shifting angles of view: Truman, director and spectators.Then it draws a summarization that Escapism has overall infiltrated into human’s life.Key words: The Truman Show, Escapism, shifting angles of view, intercutting, Post-Modernism
The Truman Show, as a typical milestone of the movie industry, puts other traditional genres in the shadow by intercutting the real-time documentary between program of Truman and “real life” of the spectators and director.Firstly, the movie chiefly centralizes on the Truman Burbank’s angle of view.The protagonist, whose entire life is broadcasted in a hugely popular 24-hour-a-day TV series, is gradually aware that his existence is captured by concealed cameras and tries his best to get away from the authoritative domination.Secondly, the movie alternately intercuts the shot to the angle of view of spectators, who are keeping a watchful eye on Truman’s every particular gesture and behavior for escaping from the perceived unpleasant aspects of daily life.Thirdly, the movie shifts the scene to director’s angle of view.It reveals that his motivation of creating the cheerful community of Seahaven(a materialization of “paradise”)is to run away from the hypocrisy and complexity of the world outside2.In short, whatever angle of view the movie sets out, it gives embodiment of Escapism all the time and all the way.As for Escapism3, it is a mental diversion or tendency to seek distraction and relief from banal reality in the era of Post-Modernism4.Although different reference books provide different illustrations5, several characteristics are endorsed.For one thing, Escapism is regarded as an inherent expression of Post-Modernism, for urbanization, industrialization and technological existences have removed people from their biologically normal natures and the rigors of daily life.For another thing, it is unilateral to assert that escapism carries an extreme and negative connotation, suggesting escapists are depraved or sorrowful.In fact, escapism also indicates optimistic significance for positive escapists with an inability or unwillingness to connect with the world meaningfully.Related with this movie, three kinds of Escapism, namely, Truman’s positive Escapism, director’s extreme Escapism and spectators’ negative Escapism have been infiltrating into human’s life.The cause, manifestation and influence of will be analyzed in detail.From Truman’s angle of view, Escapism is endowed with the property of positiveness and has done a great favor to obtain freedom.First of all, his Escapism originates from his consciousness of being controlled and the conspiracies of life.As we know, he has grown up and lived in a fake town getting along with actors.The town is enclosed in a giant dome with high-tech simulations of sun and sky, in which the rain and wind are productions of the special effects.In the beginning, he knows nothing that the rest of humanity watches him in a 24-hour-a-day reality programming.Fortunately, he gradually figures out that his surroundings are full of staged scenes and events.Hence, His intention to escape is put into practice as an adequate dynamic and driving force to convert the bound situation and obtain the precious freedom.Above all, his positive Escapism provides the ample motivation to flee the fake and hold the authentic life in his arms.It is his positive Escapism that makes him come up against both his own fears of water and the obstacles put in his way by the producer-director who has made billions of traps in a stage set and playing a God role in his life.From director’s angle of view, Christof’s extreme Escapism has buried his humanity and conscience, which seed in his collapse in essence.In the beginning, his Escapism stems from his despair towards degenerate modern society.today's affluent societies are in danger of becoming rotten and hypocritical environments under the impact of urbanization, industrialization and technological existences etc.In the movie, Christof shows his hopelessness towards reality several times.Therefore, his Escapism is put into effect as a passageway to reject and isolate from the reality, As we can say, he chooses an extreme way to create the lifelike simulations and story lines from the high-tech facsimile of a sun that benevolently beams down on Truman to the mock sincerity of the actors who Truman mistakenly believes is his family and friend.All that he has done embodies his abnormal and freak Escapism from reality.In sum up, Christof’s extreme Escapism leads to his deformity of personality and final breakdown.From spectators’ angle of view, it is the negative Escapism that gives rise to their crazed behavior of being addictive in peeping Truman’s life immorally.Firstly, spectators’ negative Escapism derivates from their desires of getting out of the unpleasant sufferings pessimistically.As we can observe, although the fans may live very normal lives— having children, relationships and regular jobs, they spend their regular time escaping into an idealized world and lose their own mind in the made-up show.As Truman’s fate rises and falls, the spectators’ emotion fluctuates fiercely.They are devoted enough to throw themselves into the series and treat themselves as actors.Consequently, spectators who get excessively involved as fans of Truman show are pursuing an unhealthy level of escapism.The negative Escapism masquerades as a better anesthesia than exploring the hard truths of this world.As a result, negative Escapism leads to symptoms of mental illness such as dependence on media and peeping.In brief, after analyzing the brilliantly-conceived satire, we can easily draw the conclusion that the intercutting shots between program of Truman and “real life” of the director and spectators fully demonstrates Escapism has overall infiltrated into human’s life.Truman certifies positive Escapism can play a effective role in fulfilling dream.Director’s Escapism makes him run away from the absurdity extremely.proper Spectators’ Escapism leads them to turn down to engage in the true world negatively.Notes:

由楚門想到的十一期間沒有和朋友一起走進電影院，看什么激動人心的大片，而是一個人躲在家里，同樣手捧爆米花，欣賞了由政治老師推薦的，蘊含著一定哲學思想的，一部有內(nèi)涵的電影——金·凱瑞主演，著名導演彼得·威爾的超現(xiàn)實影片，黑色喜劇《楚門的世界》，(“The Truman Show”)
這部電影講述了這樣一個故事：一個平凡的小人物在自己毫不知情的情況下被制造成聞名的電視明星，前半生一直生活在一個攝影棚中！“籠中鳥”楚門每天生活的一切都是被制造出來的：金發(fā)女郎如言情小說般突然出現(xiàn)在楚門的視線中，開啟他愛欲的閥門，又讓她突然離去，使其心靈墜入無底的深淵；他讓楚門從未謀面的“已故父親”突然現(xiàn)身；包括空氣、大海、城市、打雷和下雨??完全被剝奪了自由、隱私乃至尊嚴，成為大眾娛樂工業(yè)的犧牲品。在他自己發(fā)現(xiàn)這一切之后，他努力掙脫，終于勇敢地邁出了離開攝影棚的這一步。一口氣看完這部影片，手心里全是冷汗。本能的，我問自己——我的生活也想楚門一樣的普通，那我會不會也生活在一個巨大的攝影棚之中呢？
冷靜下來想一想，這部影片其實就是一部現(xiàn)實背景下的《俄狄浦斯王》，金·凱瑞為我們詮釋了一個終生被人擺布、遭人愚弄的普通人典型，他可以說是另一個俄狄浦斯。電影中那位天才導演就是預(yù)言的上帝，他時刻掌握了事情發(fā)展的主動權(quán)。楚門被命運愚弄，但對生活和前途仍充滿了樂觀，我不想承認卻又不得不承認——我身上有楚門的影子。這樣一則荒誕無稽的人生寓言，這樣一部顛覆人們世界觀電影，這樣一個激勵人心、發(fā)人省思的黑色喜劇，對惟利是圖、踐踏人權(quán)的社會現(xiàn)象進行了強烈諷刺。如果“人生如戲，戲如人生”是真的。我，是不是在上帝的欺瞞和安排下，一直忘我地做著無意義的事呢？我一直堅信的人品守恒定律是不是某位導演掌握著很好的度，有時給我當頭一棒，有時又讓我覺得世界充滿愛？使我在痛苦中保持希望，在希望中忍受痛苦呢？而我所生活的世界，究竟是不是一個病態(tài)的世界呢？
如果我是這樣一場真人秀的主人公，沒有隱私，一切都大白于天下，人性赤裸裸展現(xiàn)于世界觀眾面前，被蒙在鼓里，長達30年之久，在被技術(shù)手段編碼的過程中，過著被設(shè)計的人生，毫無懸念，走著規(guī)定的程序，命運的不確定性被完全排除，不再是前途未卜，不再有任何干擾。當我有一天發(fā)現(xiàn)這一切的時候，我會不會邁出這個世界，走向未知？
影片中的楚門選擇邁出這一步，以此表達了對技術(shù)理性制造出來的虛假世界的否定，仿佛在向我們傳達這樣一個信念：要在真實世界里生活！因為它真實，雖然似乎同樣受制于某種不可抗拒的力量，然而它不是來自于人為的技術(shù)手段，不是人工制造，而是來自不可名狀、不可預(yù)知的命運安排，正因為不可預(yù)知，人生才如此充滿魅力。而我呢，不一定。我相信縱使命運被擺布是悲哀的，但當我思考過自己的人生之后，我對我自己的人生是滿意的，我會繼續(xù)當自己世界中的主角。
也許當全世界都瘋了而我唯一清醒的時候，我會覺得自己其實才是瘋子！

觀楚門世界有感
“我們看戲，看厭了虛偽的表情，看厭了花巧的特技楚門的世界..可以說是假的，楚門本人卻半點不假這節(jié)目沒有劇本，沒有剪輯，未必會是杰作，但如假包換是一個人一生的真實記錄..”這是影片開頭創(chuàng)作楚門節(jié)目的導演Christof說的一段話。
看了楚門的世界讓我十分的震撼，雖然劇情并不是十分貼合現(xiàn)實生活，但每一個情節(jié)都扣人心弦。故事設(shè)定在桃源島，桃源島其實世界上最大的攝影棚，攝影棚中的一切都是為楚門布置的，覆蓋有龐大的攝影網(wǎng)絡(luò)，一天24小時，任何度全程拍攝楚門的一舉一動，全球直播。島上的一切都不是真實的，太陽、月亮、環(huán)島的海水、風雨雷電都是人工的。島上的居民都是演員扮演的，也包括楚門的爸爸媽媽，妻子與好友。居家生活中使用的每一樣產(chǎn)品都可以作為插入的廣告來賺取廣告費，他們對出門說的每一句話都是導演安排好的臺詞。楚門的世界是虛偽的，他身邊的每一個人對他都是不真實的，不是真心的。處于這樣一個無知的位置，每天的生活都是在他人的掌控之中，被他人觀看著。一切的幕后指揮者導演對楚門說：“你所在的世界是病態(tài)的，桃源島是一個模范社會?！闭鎸嵣钆c虛構(gòu)的世界被病態(tài)的導演顛倒了。如果楚門一生都不知情，那么他一生的時光都將被導演安排好，娶誰做妻子，從事什么工作，在某個時間、某個地點會遇上怎樣的人和事。導演高高在上地站在位于人造月球上的演播室里俯瞰著桃源島，儼然以上帝自居。
整部影片向我們展現(xiàn)了一個平凡的小人物是怎樣在自己毫不知情的情況下被制造成聞名的電視明星，卻完全被剝奪了自由、隱私乃至尊嚴，成為大眾娛樂工業(yè)的犧牲品，這就好像是在演繹一則荒誕無稽的人生寓言，我們在同情男主角楚門被強行束縛的生活方式之余，更從內(nèi)心激發(fā)出一種強烈的情感，那就是對惟利是圖、踐踏人權(quán)的社會現(xiàn)象的強烈諷刺。很佩服電影中那位才華橫溢、不可一世的天才導演，他讓人想到了上帝，同時看到那個軟弱、疲憊、徨惑的楚門被一次次的虛偽所玩弄，還是對生活和前途充滿了樂觀時，我的內(nèi)心就一陣陣地酸楚，我不忍面對——不忍面對一個真實的“我們”！在電影中，編劇和導演通過人們在主人公推開“藍天”上的一道門，堅決而瀟灑地轉(zhuǎn)身走出之后的歡呼聲中，表達了對技術(shù)理性制造出來的虛假世界的否定，仿佛在向我們傳達這樣一個信念：這個世界如果是虛假的，那么好吧，我寧愿在這個世界里生活，因為它真實，雖然似乎同樣受制于某種不可抗拒的力量，然而它不是來自于人為的技術(shù)手段，不是人工制造，而是來自不可名狀、不可預(yù)知的命運安排，正因為不可預(yù)知，人生才如此充滿魅力。
“人生如戲，戲如人生”，哲人如此感嘆，但人生舞臺上的演員——我們，是不是時刻都有一種演戲的自覺呢？還是在上帝的欺瞞和安排下，忘我地做著無意義的事呢？快樂，不足以使我們熱愛這個世界；挫折，不足以使我們拋棄這個世界。上帝就像那個天才的導演一樣，掌握著很好的度，他知道該在何時給我們當頭一棒，何時又給我們燒起暖暖的火爐，他使我們在痛苦中保持希望，在希望中忍受痛苦，因為痛苦制造著劇情的波瀾，也制造著收視率，希望則是賞給我們的出場費，使我們不至于中途罷演。電影的末尾，楚門是覺悟了的，他對著攝影機，真的向“上帝”罷演了。
最終楚門還是選擇走出去，我喜歡這個堅持走出去的楚門，這個對未知世界充滿勇氣的楚門，誰都不敢保證外面的世界更精彩，誰都不敢保證
外面的世界沒有哀傷，但那是外面的世界，那是掙脫現(xiàn)有狀況的外面的世界，相較于安穩(wěn)跟平靜，自由是更為可貴的東西，告別沒有隱私的生活，告別被監(jiān)視的歲月，告別沒有真正人權(quán)的狀態(tài)，要走出去，走到外面的世界去，不管外面的世界是風雨還是晴天，不管外面的世界會不會真的自由到海闊天空。楚門痛恨的是這種自己的人生按導演的意志被操控的生活，他要走出去，走到外面的世界去。即使他的未來撲朔迷離，是個未知數(shù)，他也要擺脫束縛，沖向自己美好的明天，自己把握自己的命運。楚門以自己一貫的動作表情向觀眾們謝幕令人回味。

楚門的世界
今天辦公室的一個同事問我為什么QQ的昵稱叫“楚門的世界”，我推薦她去看《楚門的世界》。
“作為一個不受期待的生命，主人公楚門被電視網(wǎng)絡(luò)公司收養(yǎng)，在一個寧靜和諧的小島生活。他與周圍的人們愉快融洽地相處著，還娶到了一位美麗的妻子。每一天對他來說，都是那么得美好。然而，他沒有想到的是，這一切竟然都是電視臺的安排。他生活的社區(qū)是一個巨大的攝影棚，他的朋友、鄰居，甚至是妻子都不過是演員而已。從小時候開始，他的一切行蹤便被隱藏的攝像機拍了下來，并且成為了一部受到全球觀眾喜愛的電視劇集。為了維持收視率，電視臺的幕后操縱者千方百計地隱瞞著一切。但偽裝始終是偽裝。真相很快暴露出來。楚門厭倦了這種監(jiān)獄似的生活，于是，他踏上了逃亡之路，開始了對新生活的追尋?? ”
這就是金凱瑞的電影《楚門的世界》(“The Truman Show”)的故事簡介。看到這部電影純屬偶然，記得是幾年前一個夏天的晚上從馬路邊練攤的碟販那里淘到的?？赐旰笥X得“物超所值”。
以前對金凱瑞的印象止于淋漓盡致的無厘頭的搞笑，但一部《楚門的世界》讓我有心酸、甚至流淚的感覺。一個人出生后的30年，被設(shè)置成每天直播24小時的真人秀。他的酸甜苦辣、吃喝玩樂，甚至于MAKELOVE，都成為世人所津津樂道的娛樂節(jié)目。當一個人被脫光衣服扔在眾人的中央、生活的一切都由別人來導演時，他活著的真實該如何去感覺和觸摸？
所以當楚門發(fā)現(xiàn)自己生活在一個虛假的世界時，他拼命的想逃脫。最后的他駕著小船，經(jīng)歷了狂風暴雨卻無比失落地看到了一堵刷著藍天白云的墻。在聽著導演 “聽我說外面的世界比我虛構(gòu)的世界更不真實，同樣的謊言、虛偽，但在我的世界，你不必害怕” 的聲音時，觀眾也進入了另一種沉思。
楚門最終還是敲開了那扇門，一扇通向自由和真實的門。幾乎每個人都為楚門跨出那扇門歡呼，甚至流下感動的淚。
此時，我們也比較容易聯(lián)想到《海上鋼琴師》中的主人公1990，那個一生都在船上度過的鋼琴師。當在朋友的勸告下想離開船看外面的世界時，1990在最后一刻停住了踏下船的腳步。朋友問他：你看到了什么而改變了主意。他的回答是：不是我看到了什么，而是因為我什么也看不到。
是的，我們?nèi)滩蛔殡x開“楚門的世界“的楚門擔心：一個在虛假世界生活慣了的人能不能在真實的社會中生存？或者會不會陷于另一個虛假的世界中？
海上的鋼琴師還是那個鋼琴師，楚門的世界卻已經(jīng)不再是那個世界。我們該為楚門悲哀，抑或慶幸？
也許我們本身沒有資格對楚門做任何評價，因為我們何嘗又不是生活在“楚門的世界”中。所謂戲如人生，人生如戲?，F(xiàn)實中每個人都在扮演著自己的角色，而不同的是，有些人是自己人生的導演，有些人卻是由別人來導演人生。但 “人生沒有彩排，生命只有現(xiàn)場直播”，無論是現(xiàn)實還是虛擬、兼做導演還是單純的演員，我們都要尊重自己內(nèi)心最深處的感受，做專業(yè)的、做真實的自己。
