口譯與記憶

——以《胡錦濤在上海世博會(huì)歡迎晚宴上的祝酒辭》為例

從心理學(xué)的角度上，人們把記憶分為短時(shí)記憶（STM）和長(zhǎng)時(shí)記憶（LTM）。從字面意義上講，短時(shí)記憶就是在短時(shí)間內(nèi)記住信息，它不需要利用任何神經(jīng)機(jī)制來(lái)為以后提取此信息而加強(qiáng)記憶。長(zhǎng)時(shí)記憶是指利用神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)儲(chǔ)存信息，這些信息與數(shù)據(jù)能在數(shù)周、數(shù)月、乃至幾年后仍舊記憶猶新（曾傳生，2010）。無(wú)論是同聲傳譯或是交替?zhèn)髯g，記憶能力，尤其是短時(shí)記憶能力都顯得尤為重要。

口譯是以短時(shí)記憶為中心的語(yǔ)言活動(dòng)?？谧g的過(guò)程大致可以概括為四步：獲取源語(yǔ)言信息，存儲(chǔ)信息，提取信息，轉(zhuǎn)換成目的語(yǔ)。其中，該過(guò)程的前三步，都與短時(shí)記憶息息相關(guān)。在同傳或交傳的過(guò)程中，譯者主要借助短時(shí)記憶，利用聽(tīng)覺(jué)及語(yǔ)義存儲(chǔ)信息、處理信息，并最終轉(zhuǎn)換信息。Peterson（1959）的研究表明，他所實(shí)驗(yàn)的短時(shí)記憶能持續(xù)6到12秒?？谧g的特點(diǎn)也決定了譯員必須要充分利用短時(shí)記憶。此次口譯活動(dòng)結(jié)束，譯員會(huì)接到可能內(nèi)容風(fēng)格可能完全不同的口譯任務(wù)，此時(shí)，這個(gè)翻譯任務(wù)所涉及的內(nèi)容、主題和發(fā)言人會(huì)截然不同。因此，短時(shí)記憶是譯員所需要的最基本的記憶技能。

祝酒辭應(yīng)屬商務(wù)口譯的范疇。商務(wù)口譯存在傳播的“生活形式” 以及口譯傳播的“及席性”的特點(diǎn)。而這些特點(diǎn)也往往造成了對(duì)口譯傳播與意義表達(dá)的制約（朱錚錚，2009）。《胡錦濤在上海世博會(huì)歡迎晚宴上的祝酒辭》中，也大致體現(xiàn)了商務(wù)口譯的一些特點(diǎn)。但對(duì)于國(guó)家領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人在如此重要的場(chǎng)合下所做的祝酒辭稿件，譯者必定是事先對(duì)原稿有了比較詳盡的了解。盡管如此，該祝酒辭依然蘊(yùn)含著生活化與即席性的特點(diǎn)。例如，在此祝酒辭的最后，胡錦濤主席提議“為舉辦一屆成功、精彩、難忘的世博會(huì)，為世界人民的團(tuán)結(jié)和友誼，為人類(lèi)文明發(fā)展進(jìn)步，為各位嘉賓和家人身體健康，干杯”這部分，便體現(xiàn)了生活化與即席性的特點(diǎn)。

口譯活動(dòng)依賴(lài)譯員的短時(shí)記憶能力，但并不表示譯員的長(zhǎng)時(shí)記憶不發(fā)揮作用。長(zhǎng)時(shí)記憶里儲(chǔ)存的是平時(shí)積累的生活常識(shí)、專(zhuān)業(yè)知識(shí)、各種經(jīng)歷等，其容量是無(wú)限的。信息在此儲(chǔ)存的時(shí)候見(jiàn)響度較長(zhǎng)，有的內(nèi)容甚至終身不忘（賀煜，肖穎，李紀(jì)超，2009）。長(zhǎng)時(shí)記憶，是一個(gè)需要不斷學(xué)習(xí)的過(guò)程。譯員的語(yǔ)言知識(shí)、文化知識(shí)等的系統(tǒng)儲(chǔ)備，對(duì)口譯也是至關(guān)重要的。例如，在這篇祝酒辭中，出現(xiàn)

1了我國(guó)國(guó)家領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人經(jīng)常會(huì)提及的我國(guó)經(jīng)濟(jì)社會(huì)等各項(xiàng)發(fā)展必須走的道路及必須堅(jiān)持的原則，即“中國(guó)將高舉和平、發(fā)展、合作旗幟，始終不渝地走和平發(fā)展道路，始終不渝奉行互利共贏的開(kāi)放戰(zhàn)略，堅(jiān)持在和平共處五項(xiàng)原則的基礎(chǔ)上同所有國(guó)家發(fā)展友好合作，同各國(guó)人民一道推動(dòng)建設(shè)持久和平、共同繁榮的和諧世界。”此處的翻譯質(zhì)量，就完全取決于譯者的長(zhǎng)時(shí)記憶。即譯者是否具備扎實(shí)穩(wěn)妥的基本功以及充足的知識(shí)儲(chǔ)備，尤其是譯者是否了解對(duì)國(guó)家發(fā)展戰(zhàn)略等問(wèn)題的慣用翻譯方法。除此之外，長(zhǎng)時(shí)記憶還適用于一些常用固定搭配以及習(xí)慣表達(dá)等方面。例如祝酒辭中提到的取長(zhǎng)補(bǔ)短(learn from each other and draw on each other’s strengths)、書(shū)寫(xiě)…的新篇章（add a new chapter to…）、注冊(cè)類(lèi)世博會(huì)（the registered World Expo）、國(guó)際展覽局（the International Exhibitions Bureau BIE）、搭起…的橋梁（…serve as a bridge）、秘書(shū)長(zhǎng)（Secretary General）等等。

在上學(xué)期短暫的口譯實(shí)踐中，個(gè)人認(rèn)為，口譯的幾大難點(diǎn)在于對(duì)源語(yǔ)言的理解，在于短時(shí)記憶能力有限以及專(zhuān)業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)乃至語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)掌握不足等三個(gè)方面。鐘述孔在其所著的實(shí)用口譯手冊(cè)（修訂版）中指出, “An interpreter must realize from the very beginning of his training that it is always memory on the basis of correct comprehension that plays the major role in ensuring accuracy in interpreting, not note-taking”(p.42, 1994).由此可見(jiàn)，對(duì)源語(yǔ)言正確及時(shí)的理解輔以較強(qiáng)的短時(shí)記憶能力，對(duì)準(zhǔn)確高效的口譯實(shí)踐，意義重大。

國(guó)家領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人在比較正式的國(guó)際場(chǎng)合講話(huà)，慣用較長(zhǎng)的排比句式，乍一聽(tīng)，會(huì)感覺(jué)到一種句式復(fù)雜句子冗長(zhǎng)的特點(diǎn)，其實(shí)仔細(xì)分析下來(lái)，我們可以發(fā)現(xiàn)，排比式的長(zhǎng)句子翻譯起來(lái)還是有規(guī)律可循的。這就需要在正確理解大意的基礎(chǔ)之上，合理安排分配短時(shí)記憶，并借助筆記的輔助功能。例如，在《胡錦濤在上海世博會(huì)歡迎晚宴上的祝酒辭》中，第一段有這樣的表達(dá)：“我謹(jǐn)代表中國(guó)政府和人民，對(duì)各位嘉賓蒞臨上海世博會(huì)，表示熱烈的歡迎！對(duì)給予上海世博會(huì)真誠(chéng)幫助和大力支持的各國(guó)政府和人民，對(duì)國(guó)際展覽局和有關(guān)國(guó)際組織，對(duì)所有為上海世博會(huì)作出貢獻(xiàn)的朋友們，表示誠(chéng)摯的謝意！”聽(tīng)完這段話(huà)，單純依靠短時(shí)記憶就能準(zhǔn)確無(wú)誤地翻譯出來(lái)是基本不可能的，但在聽(tīng)的過(guò)程中，我們不難發(fā)現(xiàn)，整段話(huà)需要特別記憶的，無(wú)非就是歡迎的對(duì)象以及感謝的對(duì)象。但是，需要特別注意的是，記住歡迎以及感謝的對(duì)象貌似也不太容易，那在聽(tīng)的過(guò)程中，就盡量摒除起修飾

作用的定語(yǔ)部分，簡(jiǎn)化的結(jié)果就是，歡迎蒞臨者，感謝各國(guó)政府和人民，感謝國(guó)際展覽局和有關(guān)國(guó)際組織。

在口譯實(shí)踐的過(guò)程中，由于短時(shí)記憶能力有限，經(jīng)常會(huì)出現(xiàn)信息缺失的情況。即，短時(shí)記憶的內(nèi)容轉(zhuǎn)瞬即逝。綜合其原因，一方面，可能是受到同時(shí)接受的信息的干擾，另一方面，可能是由于時(shí)間的推移使得信息退出記憶而導(dǎo)致的短時(shí)記憶衰退（曾傳生，2010）。短時(shí)記憶容量有限，Miller(1956)在其論文《神秘?cái)?shù)字7加或減2》中就論述了，短時(shí)記憶大概是7加或減2個(gè)單位。短時(shí)記憶的另一個(gè)特點(diǎn)便是，它把信息的聽(tīng)覺(jué)形式保留下來(lái)（賀煜，肖穎，李紀(jì)超，2009）。

記憶，尤其是短時(shí)記憶在口譯中的作用十分重要。對(duì)譯員進(jìn)行加強(qiáng)短時(shí)記憶的訓(xùn)練是十分必要的。短時(shí)記憶的目的是為了幫助譯員更好地理解源語(yǔ)言，進(jìn)而使譯員的譯語(yǔ)準(zhǔn)確到位（曾傳生，2010）。曾傳生在其所著的《英語(yǔ)同聲傳譯概論》中，提到了四種記憶訓(xùn)練的方法。分別是，歸類(lèi)：對(duì)同一特質(zhì)的物品進(jìn)行歸類(lèi)；歸納：從文中所給的特定的例子或者信息中進(jìn)行總結(jié)歸納；比較：關(guān)注事物的不同之處和相同之處；描述：描述一個(gè)場(chǎng)景，一種形狀，或者一個(gè)事物的大小，等等。如果以《胡錦濤在上海世博會(huì)歡迎晚宴上的祝酒辭》為訓(xùn)練范本，以上四種記憶訓(xùn)練方法在原文的翻譯過(guò)程中也是可以借鑒的。例如，原文中“世博會(huì)是薈萃人類(lèi)文明成果的盛會(huì)，也是世界各國(guó)人民共享歡樂(lè)和友誼的聚會(huì)”這是一句由兩個(gè)分句組成的完整句子。兩個(gè)分句的相同之處便在于世博會(huì)是盛會(huì)是聚會(huì)，不同之處便在于盛會(huì)與聚會(huì)的修飾成分。因此，在聽(tīng)這段話(huà)的過(guò)程中，顯然要更加注重對(duì)修飾成分的記憶與理解。

通過(guò)上學(xué)期短暫的口譯實(shí)踐，我意識(shí)到，雖然譯者的聽(tīng)、說(shuō)、讀、寫(xiě)、譯等綜合能力和專(zhuān)業(yè)知識(shí)能力對(duì)做好口譯起關(guān)鍵作用，但對(duì)信息的有效記憶則是實(shí)現(xiàn)成功口譯的必經(jīng)之路。在正確理解源語(yǔ)言信息的基礎(chǔ)上，做到有效的短時(shí)記憶與口譯筆記相互補(bǔ)充，才能真正獲取口譯段落的完整信息。因此，做口譯的過(guò)程，就是一個(gè)長(zhǎng)時(shí)記憶與短時(shí)記憶相互結(jié)合，相互輔助的過(guò)程。以正確及時(shí)地理解信息的真實(shí)意義為前提，在結(jié)合自己已有的、儲(chǔ)存在大腦中已達(dá)到長(zhǎng)時(shí)記憶中的語(yǔ)言知識(shí)、跨文化知識(shí)、跨學(xué)科知識(shí)的基礎(chǔ)上，恰當(dāng)運(yùn)用語(yǔ)言的分析、歸納、分類(lèi)等技巧，同時(shí)盡量摒棄信息中的非主要部分，從而將信息最清晰地、牢固地儲(chǔ)存在大腦中，形成對(duì)信息的有效記憶，以期圓滿(mǎn)完成口譯任務(wù)。
