      Spot Dictation

Modern thieves do more than take your money, personal property and valuables. These days they can steal your very identity.By pretending to be you, a thief can order credit cards and run up massive debt in your name. They will get to enjoy the expensive purchases, and you will be left holding the bill.Criminals seek out personal information that they can use to pretend to be you. This includes credit card numbers, bank account information and private data. One of the easiest ways for them to do this is by going through your garbage and pulling out any relevant mail.A thief can pick up a credit card offer and order it to be sent to an alternate address.Once the card arrives, they activate it, run up the maximum amount of charges and move on.The credit card company will attempt to reach the person they believe to be you at the new location, and when that fails they will contact you directly. The best way to avoid this is to make sure no one has access to personal information about you.At the least you should tear up mail that has any relevant data on it.Better yet, shred these documents so there is no way they can be taped back together.A quick fix job will allow a thief to have the information they need to steal your identity.Anytime you go on vacation, make sure you have mail delivery stopped until you return.Even if you shred your mail like clockwork, if a criminal can get to it before you do they can access all the data they need without you knowing until it is too late. Most well known and established websites have secure methods for their customers to purchase products using a credit card, but there are thousands of other sites that may not be as reliable.Make sure that you only provide personal information on websites that you trust completely.Similarly, never give out credit card or other details on the phone.A person who claims they are calling from an online store to ask you for information to complete a transaction may actually be a hacker who got your private data online.A thief will send you an email telling you to log on to a well known website for an important reason. It may be to confirm or deny a transaction, to review a private message or some other call to action.A convenient link is provided for you to click on to be taken directly to the log in page.Once you arrive, you type in your name and password like always.Trouble is, the site you just logged on to is a fake.It is a page designed to look exactly like the real thing, but it is under the control of the criminals who created it.Now they have your log in information and can use it to get your credit card numbers and other private details from the genuine website.Stay alert to the new and devious tactics thieves use to steal not only your belongings, but also your identity.Destroy personal documents before you put them in the trash, make sure you only log in to the home page of any website and don't let criminals steal your good name.Part B: Listening Comprehension Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following conversation.(Woman)(Man)(Woman)(Man)(Woman)(Man)(Woman)(Man)(Woman)(Man)(Woman)(Man)(Woman)

      (Man)

      (Woman)

      (Man)(Woman)

      (Man)(Woman)(Man)

      (Woman)(Man)(Woman)Come in!

Hi, Professor Johnson!Do you have a minute? Fredrick!Come in.I like your new office!

Thanks! It’s much nicer than my old one… What can I do for you? Well… er… I’d like to talk about my English.Your English is great! You were my top student last semester. How’s your new listening/speaking class with Professor Simmons?

      He’s a good teacher, alright… but, I’m worried about my classmates.Your classmates?

I mean… my classmates are from all different countries.I’m afraid that if I talk with them during group work, I’ll pick up their accents.I wouldn’t worry about that if I were you. There’s no way you can pick up a different accent just from being in class a few hours a week.Really?

Really!Just think of all the English you’re exposed to every day here in the United States. You listen to the radio, you watch TV, you talk with your American friends, you chat with people in stores….Most of the English you hear is American English. You’re only with your classmates a couple of hours a day. That’s not going to affect your accent. Are you sure?

Positive!Let me give you an example….Umm … say you have a mother from Germany living in the United States.Let’s say she has a child here.Even if the mother speaks English with a German accent, her child will still grow up speaking American English. Why? Because the child’s getting language from lots of other places, not just the mother. It’s the same for your situation.I understand your example about the child… but I think children learn language differently than adults.Actually you’re right. It isn’t exactly the same because children CAN actually learn accents.Their minds and bodies are much more flexible than ours, so it’s easier for them. For adults who are studying a foreign language, accent is one of the hardest things to improve. In fact, most adults never lose their native accents. So does that mean I’ll never sound like a native speaker.Unfortunately that’s probably true.Hmmm… that makes me wonder if I should take that pronunciation class that I signed up for next semester.Since I’ll never sound like a native speaker, maybe I don’t need the class.I wouldn’t look at it that way.In a pronunciation class, there are still important things that you can learn.Like what, for example?

Like things that will make your speech clearer—things such as stress, rhythm, and intonation.(Man)(Woman)I’m sorry.I don’t know what these are.Let me give you an example….Umm… OK….Today, when I was calling on students in my speaking class, I noticed that one of my students was absent.I asked the class why Sylvia hadn’t shown up,… and one student said, “Professor, I talked to her this morning and she is homesick.” When I heard the word “homesick,” I immediately thought that Sylvia was missing her home country and was too depressed to come to school. So I starred asking more questions….Was she sad? Did she want to leave the United States to return home? After a few minutes.I realized that Sylvia was at home sick. She just had a bad cold. The student who was telling me about Sylvia said “homesick” instead of “home sick.”

(Man)(Woman)Oh!He said the words with the wrong… how do you say it … er …

The wrong stress. The problem was that the student put the stress on the wrong syllable.Problems like this are things that you study in a pronunciation class….And these are really important because if you get them wrong, there can be big(Man)

(Woman)misunderstandings.Like what happened in your class.Exactly! If you use correct stress when you speak, people will usually be able to understand you even if you have a different accent. For example, if someone had an Indian accent he might say … “She is home sick” … or if the person was from England he would say … “She is home sick.”

(Man)(Woman)(Man)(Woman)(Man)Or if the person was from Australia he would say …

“She is home sick”!Were you able to understand all these different accents? Yes!I’m surprised!

That’s because the stress was the same. But even if I can understand different accents, aren’t there some accents that are better than others? I’ve heard people say that a British accent is better than an American accent.Well, from my point of view—and most language teachers would agree--there’s no such thing as a “best” accent.Today, there are so many different kinds of English accents around the world.Saying that one accent is “better” or “worse” than another is like saying that one country or group of people is “better” or “worse” than another one.We can’t compare them that way—they’re just different.(Woman)

(Man)I guess you’re right….Uh oh … it’s getting late.I have to check out a book from the library before class, so I’d better get going. Thanks for your advice.I’ll think over what you said.Question No.1.Where does this conversation take place? Question No.2.Which of the following statements is TRUE, according to the professor? Question No.3.In the example given by the professor, what’s wrong with the student who said “homesick”? Question No.4.The professor speaks English with several accents.Which of the following does she NOT use? Question No.5.What does the student decide to do at the end of the conversation? Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following news.LONDON Britain’s economy risks overheating because of government budget deficits accumulated by Finance Minister Gordon Brown and an acceleration in house price growth, a Conservative party spokesman said.Oliver Letwin, opposition Conservative Party financial spokesman, said the government should curb speeding and do more to rein in house price growth, suggesting the Labour government is reluctant to curb overheating in the economy ahead of the next election.House prices growth accelerated to 19.1 percent in the quarter through April, the most since August. The Treasury estimated it would have a deficit or 37.5 billion pounds in the fiscal year through April, the biggest since Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Labour government took office in 1997.FRANKFURT Business confidence in the 12-nation euro area was probably unchanged in May at a three-year high, with gains limited by concern record oil prices may crimp a global economic recovery, a survey of economists showed. An index of confidence compiled by the European Commission may have stayed at minus 5, the highest since April 2001, according to the median forecast of 30 economists in a Bloomberg New survey. The report will be released on Friday.National indexes published in the preceding days will probably show confidence unchanged in France and falling in Germany and Italy.“Companies have become irritated by the higher oil price, and world trade may expand at a slower clip amid expectations for a slowdown in China and the US,” said Gabriele Widmann, an economist at Dekabank in Frankfurt.“We may have seen the peak in growth last quarter.TOKYO Tokyo stocks edged higher yesterday as investors bought bank issues on expectations the big four banks will deliver solid earnings results. The Nikkei Stock Average of 225 closed up 31.39 points, or 0.28 per cent, at 1.64 points. On Friday, the index gained 208.21 points, or 1.92 per cent.Bank issues led yesterday’s gains, as investors expected solid earning results from major banks. All big four banks—Mizuho, Sumitomo Mitsui, Mitsubishi Tokyo and UFJ—closed higher yesterday. Before trading ended yesterday, banks reported mixed results for the year ended March 31, with Mizuho, Sumitomo Mitsui and Mitsubishi Tokyo financial saying their profits improved, while UFJ posted another year of losses due to bad loan write-offs.All four banks said they would be profitable this year.DHAKA Grieving relatives of hundreds of people believed drowned when two ferries sank during a storm in Bangladesh, lined the banks of a notorious river yesterday as hopes dimmed that any more survivors would be found. Both ferries sank on Sunday during a sudden storm on the rain-swollen river Meghna near Chandpur, 170 kilometers southeast of Dhaka.About 100 people were rescued or swam to safety after the sinkings.By midday yesterday some 46 bodies had been recovered. And around 150 people were still unaccounted for, officials said.SEOUL A Japanese Coast Guard patrol boat fired around 20 teargas grenades yesterday at a Republic of Korea fishing vessel that was operating illegally in Japanese waters, injuring one of the crew members, the Coast Guard said.A Coast Guard official said the 70-ton fishing boat was operating inside Japan’s exclusive economic zone near the southern Japanese island of Tsushima, which lies between the two countries some 50 kilometres south of the Korean city of Pusan. The official said the Japanese patrol boat repeatedly ordered the fishing boat to stop in Korean and fired the grenades when it did not do so.The Korean Yonhap News Agency said the fishing boat’s captain was hit in the head by fragments of the exploding teargas grenades and taken to a hospital in Korean, but added that his injuries were not life-threatening, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported.Question No.6.Why does Britain’s economy risk overheating? Question No.7.Which of the following statements best describes business confidence in the euro area? Question No.8.What is the financial position of the big four banks in Japan at present? Question No.9.Around how many people are believed to have drowned during a storm in Bangladesh yesterday? Question No.10.What happened yesterday in the sea areas between Japan and Korea?

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following interview.(Woman)Welcome back to Talk of the Nation: Science Friday.I’m Linda Flatow. We’re talking this hour about how and why people might become addicted to things other than drugs … addicted to things like gambling, sex, even shopping.Of course, our high-tech society also offers new high-tech addictions like video games, on-line chat rooms.Jonathan Kandell is a counselor at the University of Maryland who puts together a support group for students who find themselves addicted to the Internet.Maybe you should listen carefully to this one if you are an Internet groupie. He joins me now from his office in College Park.Welcome to the program.(Man)Thank you very much.(Woman)It this a relatively new addiction?(Man)Well, for some people, I mean, some people have been involved with the Internet for years and some of them may have been addicted for a while. With the widespread usage of the Internet now.… I mean … it’s certainly growing on(Woman)college campuses. And we are seeing more and more of it.How does it present itself? Does a student come to you and say, “Doc you gotta help me.I’m addicted to the Internet”?(Man)(Woman)(Man)(Woman)

(Man)(Woman)(Man)Well, I’ve seen people who have been, but they haven’t presented with that particular issue. They’ve presented with issues like relationship problems, or they are having problems maintaining their grades because they are spending so much time doing other things and when you find out what’s really going on … they’re spending a lot of time on the Net and they’re not paying attention to their studies … they’re not devoting the attention to the relationships. These problems are coming out in other ways

Do other people turn their friends in … saying, “Doc, you gotta find out … this … They haven’t to this point. At this point, people still see computers as a very positive thing. And I think there are many positive benefits for computers. But it’s such a new idea that there is a problematic piece to it … that, um … there haven’t been many people turning other people in.This is something I worry about … personally, myself.I’ll share this with you for a free consultation.I mean … whenever I get a chance and have some time, I love to go surfing on the Net.I’ll be on there sometimes, very surprisingly, I’ll be on there one o’clock in the morning … I’ll send somebody an e-mail message thinking they’ll get it the next morning. And I'll get an immediate response back … you know. What are the symptoms? How do I know when my Internet compulsiveness is turning into an Internet addiction?

Uh… I’m not sure the exact amount of time is really the issue, but I think when it becomes something that really begins to affect other areas of your life … when for instance your work performance or your school performance … or relationships with other people.Uh, one of the problems I see with the Internet, especially the chat rooms, is that people start developing relationships over the Net and they are very different from relationships that you have on a face-to-face basis, and you start losing some of the skills that make relationships successful … so that’s certainly a warning signal.I think if people are beginning to say something to you like, “You seem to be spending a lot of time on-line,” that’s probably a good indicator as well.…

But I think, a real important thing is to examine what’s going on with you when you are not on the Net … if you are beginning to feel anxious or depressed or empty or lonely … and you know you really look forward to those times when you can be on-line to be connected with other people in that way … then, I think, a serious issue is starting to happen. What about if you stop giving up other things, like going out for a walk? Is that a symptom?

Well, people have to make choices every day about the different activities that they’re going to do.I think it’s helpful to have some sort of balance on your life … if you can spend some time on the Internet and then go take a walk at a different time of the day. That’s not an issue. In fact, that’s one of the things that we suggest in the group is to somehow break the pattern. For example, set an alarm clock or something. When it rings, go out and take a walk, and then come back before you get back on-line.Question No.11.According to the man, why is Internet addiction so common now? Question No.12.What worries the interviewer about surfing on the Net? Question No.13.What is the problem with chat rooms, according to the man? Question No.14.The man says that several areas of a person’s life might be affected by Internet addiction.Which of the following is NOT one of these areas? Question No.15.What does the man suggest that students do to remind themselves to get off-line and take a walk?

Question 16 to 20 are based on the following talk.(Man)Pop Art is an artistic development that began in the late 1950s and became the most powerful art movement of the 1960s.Although it was a strong cultural force in Europe(especially in England), this lecture will concentrate on Pop Art in the United States.Pop artists were inspired by mass-produced visual media, such as television, magazines, comic books, billboards, and the design of common household objects, and used these things as the starting point for their art.Pop Art differed from earlier art movements. To understand Pop Art, it is helpful to know a little bit about the artistic movement that immediately preceded it.This movement was called Abstract Expressionism.Jackson Pollock is an example of an Abstract Expressionist. If we look at Pollock’s painting entitled Autumn Rhythm, we see a dense field of overlapping lines that swirl and move all over the surface of the canvas. This painting refers to the process of making the painting more than it refers to anything in the actual world.Pollock believed that his intuitive approach to making paintings could show his inner self.He said, “Painting is a state of being … [and] self discovery.Every good artist paints what he is.”

Abstract Expressionism was a highly personal art.It reflected the internal struggles of the individual artists.Pop Artists were not at all interested in this internal search.Instead, Pop Artists believed that art should have a more direct relationship to things in their world. The economic growth that began in the United States after World II gained speed in the 1960s.At the same time, television became a primary source of information and entertainment for the American people. In the late 1940s, about 10 thousand Americans owned televisions;by 1957 over 40 million Americans owned them.Artists of the 1940s and early 1950s used painting and sculpture to understand their own personal states of being.By comparison, the Pop Artists responded to the intense visual stimulation that the growing consumer culture created.Robert Rauschenberg was one of the first Pop Artists. He wanted to move art away from the personalities of the individual artists and direct it towards the world. The intuitive swirling forms of a Pollock painting said nothing to Rauschenberg about the rapidly changing world that he was experiencing.By the late 1950s, Robert Rauschenberg was using everyday objects, which he found on the street, as the material for his art.Imagine taking a long walk around New York and picking up stuff, like old magazines, tires, and crumbled cigarette boxes. What would happen if you tried to make art from this material? This is what Rauschenberg did.He wanted to have his art reflect the world he lived in.Rauschenberg didn’t try to impose a unified symbolic meaning on this collection of material.Instead he wanted the work to reflect the randomness of the things you might see if you were to walk around a densely populated area.By the early 1960s Robert Rauschenberg was concentrating less on the objects and more on the images he found. He was fascinated by how a single photograph could be distributed through a magazine or newspaper across the country virtually immediately. He thought that these printed photographs could comment on the speed at which information was being given to people living in the TV age.Rauschenberg’s use of found objects and images from everyday life was innovative and it set the stage for further development in Pop Art.Pop Artistes were interested in visual communication because they believed that these images reflected the cultural values of contemporary society.Question No.16.In which of the following periods did Pop Art start? Question No.17.By which of the following were Pop artists inspired? Question No.18.Which of the following statements is TRUE about Abstract Expressionism? Question No.19.What was the goal of the Pop artist, Robert Rauschenberg? Question No.20.Why were Pop artists interested in visual communication?

      Note Taking and Gap Filling

Everyone likes having friends to lean on, but a friendship expert says that pals who tend to criticize us, dump their problems in our laps, or otherwise mess with our emotions might be harmful to our health.Recent scientific studies have shown that people with friends endure less stress, recover from heart attacks faster and live longer than the friendless.Plus, with divorce rates at 50 percent, and the average marriage age edging upwards, lifelong friends are in some cases replacing the ideal of having a lifelong spouse. But newer research is also taking a look at the impact of the friends that drain you, the “toxic friends” that some of us have in our lives. When do you pull the plug on the pals who zing veiled insults, barrage us with constant demands, or bring whining to our worlds? In her book, When Friendship Hurts, Jan Yager, a sociologist at the University of Connecticut in Stamford, says that negative, destructive friendships can wreak havoc on our lives and can even cause us serious harm.“There are incidents of friends actually causing their friends' deaths, from forcing friends in fraternity settings to drink and die, to a current lawsuit, where two friends went to a concert, and got high on drugs,” Yager said. One of the friends died, and the father of the other is suing. The most famous example of a toxic friendship is that of the two Columbine High School students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, whose friendship helped lead to a horrific massacre that left 12 students and a teacher dead on April 20, 1999.Similarly, gangs are friendships with negative motives, Yager said.Friends Who Hurt Us Emotionally But there are also friends who can be bad for us in emotion, and sometimes subtler ways with sly insults, and competitive one-upmanship.“The negative impact can be as devastating as poor self-esteem, stress, or career sabotage and the scary part is sometimes negative friends have influence over friends who aren't even aware of it,” Yager said. She says there are some 21 types of potentially negative friends.Among the villains: the faultfinder, the one-upper, the abusive friend, the double-crosser, and the person who engages in petty or criminal behavior. One woman had gotten drunk at a business party, and drove her friends home.No one was hurt, but her co-workers ostracized her afterward. The woman was willing to admit to her colleagues that what she did was wrong, which smoothed things over.Other varieties of negative friends include liars, overly dependent friends, and those who do not listen.Dara Tyson and Michele Comen, both 41, have been best friends since high school, and grew up around the block from each other in Brooklyn, N.Y.Now, they are both married with children, and live about 20 minutes apart. They have been through marriage, kids and divorce with each other and communicate in that shorthand that longtime friends have. But they have also had a whole lot of ups and downs, and sometimes wonder if their friendship is worth it.Comen says Tyson can be flip and dismissive, and that she pigeonholes people, sizing up situations too quickly. It irritates Comen, who is more analytical and likes to explain how she forms an opinion.Tyson, meanwhile, says that Comen is not empathetic at times, and that sometimes one or the other just doesn't “get it” when they're communicating. They sometimes think it would be easier to cut loose the friendship, but they have such deep ties, that it is difficult to do so.Yager says there are times to abandon a friendship, and times to stick it out. It's time to cut bait when the time spent with a friend is not rewarding.“It's when you have an interaction, it can be e-mail, a phone call, or a get-together, and you don't feel a sense of feeling good about the friend,” Yager said.“Since friendships are voluntary, it has to be someone to add to your life.” Though it is hard for both genders to end a friendship, women are more likely to feel like they need to discuss and understand it, while men are more likely to just walk away, and let it ride.In business, the male method of blowing off a friendship works more smoothly, and women are now realizing that what works at home, doesn't necessarily help them advance in the office, Yager said. When you decide to end a friendship, she suggests doing so in a gradual way.“The best thing is to wind it down, rather than stopping cold turkey, because in process of winding down or pulling away, most friends will get the hint,” Yager said.“In getting the hint, the person is now increasing his or her friendships with other people, so the sense of loss is minimized.” If the person senses that you are pulling away and asks what is happening, you should not fault them, but blame it on the interaction.“Say it's not you, it's not me, it's you and me together that is not the best interaction right now,” Yager said. That leaves room for resuming the friendship later on.Yager suggests that when possible, friendships that only sometimes verge on toxic should be repaired.“It takes two people to start a friendship, but only one to end it,” Yager said.“Because friendship is so precious and pivotal, it's important it only be ended with good reason, and the feeling that you tried to fix it.”

If you want to stick it out and make a toxic friendship work, Jan Yager, a sociologist, offers these five steps to help you figure out how to salvage a friendship.1.Do I want to invest the time/energy to turn it around? You may not want to, but have to, because you work together, or it's a friend of your spouse, you work in the same community, church, etc.2.Will the friend want to work through the conflict? You will need to assess whether your friend will want to work through the conflict.3.Will you discuss the friendship with a friend things ride for a while? Sometimes a cooling-off time can have a better long-term effect than doing something in heat of the moment, because people feel they have to do something. But if you write an angry e-mail, don't hit send.If you directly confront a friend who may not be ready to hear something, the friendship may be prematurely catapulted to an end over something that may not seem like a big deal in hindsight.4.Try conflict resolution techniques.A.Try to understand the words that caused the conflict.B.Listen carefully to one another

C.Agree to disagree. One of the reasons you're friends is that you aren't exactly the same.D.Validate the relationship.Let them know you want to stay friends.E.If appropriate, say 'I'm sorry.' 5.If you save the friendship, don't dwell on the resolved rift.Sentence Translation

If righteousness represents a life attitude in ethics, interest a utility attitude, then the sensibilities represent a perspective of life through aesthetic perception. It insists on acting in candor, in blast and stop, and that everyone maintains his true character. You are not the creed that you espouse, nor your possessions, but yourself in the sense of your genuine character. The meaning of life consists not in sacrifice or possession, but in creation, which is the positive disposition pervasive in people's true character and the emotional satisfaction after the realization of his essential power.People with genuine disposition pursues emotional exchanges in his dealing with other people and the unique flavor of objects in his appreciation of them. What is most precious is that in an era of rash pursuit of interest by people and unavoidable pursuit of people by interest, the proper man has a leisurely manner in his handling of both people and things.I don't mean the Chinese scholar-bureaucrats’ leisurely and carefree mood, nor the peasants’ easy content and conservativenes, but an indifference to fame and fortune without slavery to interest or materials.occupies on earth. However, though larger than the ocean is the sky, even larger is the human mind, for in it imagination can come and go on the wing without limitation. In their jouney through life, some people hurry on with a heavy heart in pursuit of fame and gain, while others go with an easy, grace, enjoying themselves in harmony with nature.

A couple of minutes do count!

4for 2to expln v explain expln n explanation >more abt about mn many smn so many θ the $money hv have hs has *special Cos children Co child

      Section 4

      Section 2

所以當碰到“...can be replaced by...”

      Section 5

eg:genetic carbon copies of adults

比如:shift away from....toward....,pit....against....

      Section 6
