      (一)上

      lesson 1 a private conversation

      private 是私人的意思

      a private conversation 是私人談話的意思

      注意private 還可以作“秘密的,內(nèi)心的,平民的,無官職的,士兵的”等等意思。

      如:

      private industry 私有企業(yè) 而 a joint venture with private industry 與私營企業(yè)建立的合資企業(yè)。

      私營企業(yè)比較常用,同時(shí)常用的還有 “秘密的,非公開的” 如

      private ceremony 私人的儀式(或私人的葬禮解釋)本文private conversation 即是如此。

      作為“列兵,二等兵”名詞講,是可數(shù)名詞。二等兵是級別最低的士兵。

      同義詞有personal 個(gè)人的 underground 地下的hidden隱藏的exclusive 對公眾不開放的,隔絕的restricted 限制的其中exclusive隔絕的,是include演變而來,in-前綴表示“里面的”ex-恰好相反,import進(jìn)口export出口所以,exclude是不包括,不包括“的”是變de為sive,謂 形容詞。

      同理,re-表示重復(fù),再一次,加ed 為過去分詞,又可以

      是形容詞。restricted 記

      再一次嚴(yán)格的,就是“限制的”意思。反義詞 public 公眾的 official 官方的

      同時(shí),loud 還有清晰明了的含義,如;The message is a powerful one , and I hope it will be heard loud and clear by the tobacco industry.這是一個(gè)很強(qiáng)烈的信息,我希望煙草業(yè)能明白不誤地聽到。loud and clear 可單獨(dú)拿來當(dāng)詞組理解,清楚明了、明白無誤的。

      而(對某事的支持或批評)強(qiáng)烈的,激烈的;也是loud一種“意”項(xiàng)。和(尤指衣服)大紅大綠的,花里胡哨的,艷俗的;這種意項(xiàng)不常用,了解一下就可,記些例句:

      Mr Adams? speech yesterday was very loud in condemnation of the media.亞當(dāng)斯先生在昨天的演講中痛斥媒體。condemnation是condemn 譴責(zé)的名詞形式。

      He liked to shock with his gold chains and loud clothes.他喜歡戴金鏈子,穿花哨的衣服來招人反感。shock 有過度使人驚訝的意思。I got very angry.I could not hear the actors.我非常生氣,因?yàn)槲衣牪灰娧輪T在說什么。got=became(become 的過去式)變得……h(huán)ear聽到,與listen to someone 都是“聽到”的意思。但hear重點(diǎn)是聲音,不關(guān)注內(nèi)容listen to重點(diǎn)關(guān)注內(nèi)容,不關(guān)注聲音大小、能不能被聽見。actor是演員的意思尤指男演員。女演員actress,同義詞performer , stage player , entertainer 和

      trouper 指老戲骨,老練演員(注意拼寫相似的troop是軍隊(duì),連的意思,不要混淆)I turned round.I looked at the man and the woman angrily.They did not pay any attention.turn round=turn around 轉(zhuǎn)過身;

      pay attention 注意,留心;這個(gè)詞組很常見。

      attention 作“注意,留心,專注”時(shí),是不可數(shù)名詞If you give someone or something your attention , you look at it,listen to it ,or think about it carefully.(英英釋義)比如;Later he turned his attention to the desperate state of housing in the province.其后,他將注意力轉(zhuǎn)向了該省形勢嚴(yán)峻的住房問題。

      pay attention 詞組中draw可代替pay, 表示吸引……注意力,相似的固定搭配有:get attention 得到……關(guān)注;bring sth.to sb.?s attention 讓某人關(guān)注某事物或draw sb.?s attention to sth.attract
