Thoughts on “The Merchant of Venice”

William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's preeminent dramatist.He is often called England's national poet and the “Bard of Avon”.His surviving works, including some collaboration, consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems.His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.His works is almost a tragedy in the world, “Romeo and Juliet”, millennium sung a thousand tearsflow;“Hamlet” a happy prince of melancholy is not too shocked a large number of people, but his comedy is also worth Time to rend.There is the plot of “The Merchant of Venice”.Bassano, a young Venetian, of noble rank but having squandered his estate, wishes to travel to Belmont to woo the beautiful and wealthy heiress Portia.He approaches his friend Antonio, a wealthy and generous merchant, who has previously and repeatedly bailed him out, for three thousand ducats needed to subsidize his traveling expenditures as a suitor for three months.Antonio agrees, but he is cash-poor;his ships and merchandise are busy at sea.He promises to cover a bond if Bassano can find a lender, so Bassano turns to the Jewish moneylender Shylock and names Antonio as the loan’s guarantor.Shylock hates Antonio, both because he is a Christian and because he insulted and spat on Shylock for being a Jew.Also, Antonio undermines Shylock's moneylending business by lending money at zero interest.Shylock proposes a condition for the loan: if Antonio is unable to repay it at the specified date, he may take a pound of Antonio's flesh.Bassano does not want Antonio to accept such a risky condition;Antonio is surprised by what he sees as the moneylender's generosity, and he signs the contract.With money at hand, Bassano leaves for Belmont with his friend Gratian, who has asked to accompany him.Gratian is a likeable young man, but is often flippant, overly talkative, and tactless.Bassano warns his companion to exercise self-control, and the two leave for Belmont and Portia.In Belmont, Portia is awash with suitors.Her father has left a will stipulating each of her suitors must choose correctly from one of three caskets – one each of gold, silver, and lead – before he could win Portia's hand.In order to be granted an opportunity to marry Portia, each suitor must agree in advance to live out his life as a bachelor if he loses the contest.The suitor who correctly looks past the outward appearance of the caskets will find Portia's portrait inside and win her hand.After two suitors, the Princes of Morocco and Aragon, incorrectly choose the gold and silver caskets, Bassano chooses the leaden casket.He gets it right.The other two contain mocking verses, including the famous phrase all that glisters is not gold

At Venice, Antonio's ships are reported lost at sea.This leaves him unable to

satisfy the bond.Shylock is even more determined to exact revenge from Christians after his daughter Jessica flees his home to convert to Christianity and elope with Lorenzo, taking a substantial amount of Shylock's wealth with her.Shylock has Antonio arrested and brought before court.At Belmont, Portia and Bassano have just been married, as have Gratian and Portia's handmaid Merissa.Bassano receives a letter telling him that Antonio has defaulted on his loan from Shylock.Shocked, Bassano and Gratian leave for Venice immediately, with money from Portia, to save Antonio's life by offering the money to Shylock.Unknown to Bassano and Gratian, Portia has sent her servant, Balthazar, to seek the counsel of Portia's cousin, Bellagio, a lawyer, at Padua.Shylock refuses Bassano’s offer of 6,000 ducats, twice the amount of the loan.He demands his pound of flesh from Antonio.The Duke, wishing to save Antonio but unwilling to set a dangerous legal precedent of nullifying a contract, refers the case to a visitor who introduces himself as Balthazar, a young male “doctor of the law”, bearing a letter of recommendation to the Duke from the learned lawyer Bellagio.The “doctor” is actually Portia in disguise, and the “l(fā)aw clerk” who accompanies her is actually Merissa, also in disguise.Portia, as “Balthazar”, asks Shylock to show mercy in a famous speech, but Shylock refuses.Thus the court must allow Shylock to extract the pound of flesh.Shylock tells Antonio to “prepare”.At that very moment, Portia points out a flaw in the contract: the bond only allows Shylock to remove the flesh, not the “blood”, of Antonio.Thus, if Shylock were to shed any drop of Antonio's blood, his “l(fā)ands and goods” would be forfeited under Venetian laws.Defeated, Shylock concedes to accepting Bassano’s offer of money for the defaulted bond, but Portia prevents him from taking the money on the ground that he has already refused it.She then cites a law under which Shylock, as a Jew and therefore an “alien”, having attempted to take the life of a citizen, has forfeited his property, half to the government and half to Antonio, leaving his life at the mercy of the Duke.The Duke immediately pardons Shylock's life.Antonio asks for his share “in use” until Shylock's death, when the principal will be given to Lorenzo and Jessica.At Antonio's request, the Duke Grants remission of the state's half of forfeiture, but in return, Shylock is forced to convert to Christianity and to make a will bequeathing his entire estate to Lorenzo and Jessica.Bassano does not recognize his disguised wife, but offers to give a present to the supposed lawyer.First she declines, but after he insists, Portia requests his ring and his gloves.He parts with his gloves without a second thought, but gives the ring only after much persuasion from Antonio, as earlier in the play he promised his wife never to lose, sell or give it.Merissa, as the lawyer's clerk, also succeeds in likewise retrieving her ring from Gratian, who does not see through her disguise.At Belmont, Portia and Merissa taunt and pretend to accuse their husbands before revealing they were really the lawyer and his clerk in disguise.After all the other characters make amends, all ends happilyas Antonio learns from Portia that three of his ships were not stranded and have returned safely after all.After reading this novel, I have suffered a lot.To start with, Antonio was left a deep impression on me.He was a kind hearted and honest gentleman.He borrowed a lot of money from Shylock when his trading ships didn’t come back and no money could lend to Bassano.Hearing the news about Antonio’s trading ships sinking in the sea, Shylock demanded Antonio’s pound of flesh rather than the double money.But at that time, Antonio didn’t complaint about his good friend, Bassano, and even agreed with Shylock’s thought that gave back to Shylock a pound of flesh.He can devote his life to his friend without saying a word.Then, Portia was so smart that she saved Antonio in the court.The ”doctor“ is actually Portia in disguise, and the ”law clerk“ who accompanies her is actually Merissa, also in disguise.When shylock demanded Antonio a pound of flesh, she agreed with his thought, but Portia pointed out aflaw in the contract: the bond only allows Shylock to remove the flesh, not the ”blood“, of Antonio.Thus, if Shylock were to shed any drop of Antonio's blood, his ”lands and goods" would be forfeited under Venetian laws

The republic of Azerbaijan, whose short name is Azerbaijan;the location is very unique, which is a good advantage.You know that it is a country belongs to Asia, which is located in the southeast part of the WaiGaoJiaSuo that lies in the west Asia.Its east to the Caspian Sea, south neighbors Iran, and north depends on Russia, west receives Georgia and Armenia.The last part is far away from its native land.The country is very small and its area only covers 8.66 square km.The coastline is 800 km.compared with many otherAsia countries, the coastline is very flexible.Its official language is Azerbaijan language.National day is in the August 30th.Azerbaijan march is its national anthem and the national flag is quite beautiful horizontal rectangle made up of three parallel horizontal rectangles, the color from top to bottom is shallow blue, red and green.Thereare a month and aanise star set with in the flag.That looks very charming in the eyes of ours.And also, a hammer and several sickles were used into the national flag that stand for the peace and harmonyof the country.In terms of the national emblem, its shape is round which has three concentric circles.The color is shallow blue, red and green.There is a white anise star on its round face, some decorations in the star center.Under the circumference is set with the grain, cotton.As we all know, the grain is quite important for any nation, so we must take a notice of the security of the food.Looking back on the past, they had overcome a lot of difficulties on the way to success, looking forward to the future, they are full of confidence.To be honest, the land of the country is not big.But the population is rather small.So, the food they made can make their live.The amount of the nationalities is reach to thinking that Islam can bring good luck to them.Baku is the Azerbaijan’s capital, which is a big port beside the Caspian Sea, forming the biggest city in Azerbaijan.Baku consists of 10 administrative regions and 46 towns.The average temperature is 4 degrees in January and 27.3 degrees in July.Baku is not only the political and cultural center, but also an important oil and economic center.In the early 10th century, there has already begun to mine the oil.From 20th century, Baku is famous for oil city, important industrial area and a port.It can hold a large number of ships and it is has 18 million tons throughout of a year.In the beginning of the 20th century, Baku was a city which can’t catch up with others because of its poor economy.In old times, people in the country lived a kind of miserable life and starved to death.They even can’t raise their own children and can’t support their family.They were suffering for a long time until the coming of the revolution that broke out in landscape and all kinds of rare animals, plants.In recent years, the government devoted much money on these beautiful sightseeing in the hope of gain economic and social benefits.Another famous attraction is MuGan plain which is located in the south of Azerbaijan.There are many rivers for irrigation, fertile oil and rich agricultural products.MuGan plain is also a place that the scenery there is beautiful and charming.In the Diplomacy filed, it is rather open to other countries.The country mainly develops the relationship between the United States and other western countries.At the same time, it pays attention to strengthen cooperation with Asia and many other neighbor countries by using its oil resourcesand developing economic diplomacy actively.By 2003, the country has already set up the diplomacy relation with 141 countries.China is one of the countries which set relation with it.During the visiting, the leaders between the two countries exchange their views that how to deal with the tax of export production and reach a peace situation.Throughout these years, the two countries made some common improvement in terms of the communication of economy and culture.They will 英語系工作總結

本學期是xxxx學的第一個學期，英語系在學院領導的關懷和指導下，繼續(xù)堅持以鄧小平理論和 “三個代表”為指導思想，以黨的十六屆六中全會和十七大精神為指針，深入學習實踐科學發(fā)展觀，以教學工作為重心，加強領導，落實責任，全系動員，全力以赴，狠抓教學質量和學生管理，促進了全系各項工作的全面開展。本學期英語系的工作重點仍然是抓穩(wěn)定，抓質量，主要涉及到以下幾個方面。

一．政治思想工作

教師隊伍建設是教育教學質量的穩(wěn)步提高的前提和保障，英語系一貫重視抓師資建設，始終把理論學習、業(yè)務自修和師德修養(yǎng)放在重要地位。領導成員在管理工作中帶頭學習，并對教職工提出了具體要求，鼓勵教師加強自身專業(yè)學習和各方面能力的培養(yǎng)。本學期在學院黨委的領導下，我系老師積極參加到深入學習實踐科學發(fā)展觀的系列講座中，結合學院轉型的實際情況轉變思路，拓寬思維。在參與講座吸收新知的同時，系領導也通過教研會等途徑對老師們進行正確的引導，老師們也能做到認真思考和積極探討。

二．教學管理工作

學校的中心工作是教學工作，教育質量是學校的生命線。我系對教學工作一向非常重視。在教學管理方面，本學期和教務配合主要完成了以下具體工作：

三．教學研究工作

本學期我們分別召開了三次教研活動和兩次學生座談會。這三次教研活動分別是在開學剛始、期中、期末舉行。第一次教研活動的主要內容一是布置本學期的工作安排和教學進度，二是慶祝上學期我院學生在英語專八考試中取得了突破性的成績。第二次教研活動，主要針對當前我院在校學生只有三、四年級的特殊情況，缺勤率增高的現(xiàn)象，學院和系、教研室領導都提出要各位教師要在堅持課堂考勤的同時，不斷提高教學質量，尤其是年輕教師更要不斷鉆研教材的難、重點，通過集體備課，集思廣益，取長補短，加深對教材的理解，明確教材的難點和重點及應采用的教學方法。努力用優(yōu)質的教學，把學生吸引到課堂上來，留在課堂。第三次教研活動，主要為期末考試做了布置工作。要求本系教師必須嚴格按照學院《課程教學基本要求》出題，如試題內容涵蓋要全面，試題題型要多樣化，試題格式要規(guī)范等多方面要求。

在兩次學生座談會上，本系的系主任柯吉貴教授和教研室主任譚昌光教授、李五全教授共同認真聽取了學生關于本系教學工作的意見和建議。對于學生積極正當?shù)囊?，都給予了充分的肯定和支持，會后在同學院領導商議之后，對學生的各項要求都一一做了答復。如為06級外事英語專業(yè)學生增加了周光亞教授的《語言學》課程。

四． 總述

本期以來，全系教師能以團結協(xié)作、敬業(yè)、求實的精神，不計得失，不計報酬的做好每一件事。在工作中我們敢于創(chuàng)新，善于創(chuàng)新。在院領導的支持和兄弟系、室的幫助下，我們通過在工作中不斷總結和探索，較圓滿地完成了本學期的工作。盡管工作中仍然有一些突發(fā)事件出現(xiàn)，但我們還是能夠做到以學院穩(wěn)定為宗旨，以教學質量為重心，確保工作的順利圓滿完成。我們做了一些工作，但還有很多工作要做，任重而道遠，英語系將繼續(xù)以朝氣蓬勃的精神面貌，勤奮、求實、創(chuàng)新的工作作風，團結拼博，努力工作，為我院的進一步發(fā)展貢獻自己的力量。

第五篇：北大英語系

北京大學英語系的前身為成立于1862 年的京師同文館，后者是專門為清政府培養(yǎng)外語人才的。1902年清政府下令恢復京師大學堂時，決定將同文館并入大學堂。次年5月，大學堂又議定將同文館改為譯學館，在北河沿購置房舍，于8月正式招生開學，分設英、俄、法、德、日五國語言文字?？?，學制五年畢業(yè)。以及東方學研究院、世界文學中心三個研究機構。1999年6月22日，北京大學英語系同東方學系、西語系、和俄語系合并而成北京大學外國語學院，下設東語系、日語系、阿拉伯語系、法語系、德語系、北大英語專業(yè)教育的特色是 : 立足于聽、說、讀、寫等最基本的實用技能，詳悉最細碎的語言現(xiàn)象，同時汲取千百年來西方文明長河中沉積下來的人文養(yǎng)分，以多重的視角和高超的境界觀察和走入現(xiàn)代社會。語言與文化并舉，技能與思想聯(lián)姻。這便是北大英語系的教育方針和教學實踐。得益于綜合性大學各學科交叉互補的教育環(huán)境，北大英語系所培養(yǎng)的不僅僅是工具型的優(yōu)秀外語人才，而且是具有高度人文素養(yǎng)、對人類文化和世界文明有較深造詣的“北大人”。

我系目前開設英語精讀、視聽訓練、口譯筆譯、商業(yè)英語及計算機等課程，同時也有一整套文化、文學、語言學、思想史及電影與戲劇等方面的課程。本科生也可根據(jù)自己的興趣和能力，選修一門輔修專業(yè)，或攻讀雙學位課程。本科生中優(yōu)秀者可在三年級時直接攻讀碩士，或在畢業(yè)時免試直攻碩士甚至博士學位。北京大學外國語學院英語系英語語言文學專業(yè)是我國最早的英語語言文學碩士點和博士點之一，也是國家教育部確定的全國四個英語重點學科點之一。近年來，又成為外國語言文學學科的博士后流動站。

北大英語系有一支年輕化、高學歷的教師隊伍。隨著教師隊伍進一步年輕化，具有博士學位和國際化教育背景的教師人數(shù)將穩(wěn)步增加。另有多名英美教師任教，并有國際學者頻繁蒞臨講學。

北京大學英語系：

一、專業(yè)概況

英語語言文學為國家重點學科、與外國語言學及應用語言學均為一級博士點。

1919年北京大學建立英語系，胡適任系主任。至今已有83年的歷史。北大英語系是我國第一批碩士點和博士點之一，也是外國語言文學專業(yè)的博士后流動站和國家第一批重點學科點。研究門類齊全、研究實力雄厚。

英語系研究生共設有英語文學、英語語言學、美國研究、翻譯研究、和英語教育等五個專業(yè)方向，學制為3年?，F(xiàn)任院長程朝翔教授。

二、師資力量

北大英語系共有教授23名。具有博士學位的22名。英語系出版了大量學術專著、骨干教材和優(yōu)秀譯作。

三、就業(yè)前景

北大英語系研究生畢業(yè)后，有的攻讀博士學位繼續(xù)深造，也有在國家部委、外事部門、各級政府、新聞出版等外事部門任職。
