從我開始教雅思寫作的時候，所謂的“套句”和“模板”在雅思寫作當中是否有用就一直是一個有爭議的問題。2005年我剛從一個基礎英語教師轉型為雅思培訓師的時候，當時的主流回答是“有用”。翻看當時出版的各種雅思寫作參考書，幾乎范文里都或多或少有類似“Today, the issue that......has aroused great controversy in the modern society.While some people believe that......, this view, nevertheless, is counterargued by some other people who firmly stand by the viewpoint that.......In my opinion, both viewpoints have their merits and in this article, I would like to exploit the issue with the following aspects.”這樣的“經典套句”。于是當時本人也跟風設計了一套自己的模板，并在我當時教授的雅思寫作課程中專門開辟了“快速模板”這樣一個單元。然而實踐下來教學成果卻讓我非常困惑，因為同樣使用本人開發(fā)的“俞式模板”去寫雅思作文的考生，既有拿到7分的高分的，也有只拿到5分并且憤而在網上把我罵到臭頭的。本人這次特別翻箱倒柜，找出了當年的“俞式模板”：

appearance of a building that plays a more significant role.看上去很不錯是不是？但問題是，如果它真的那么好的話，為什么還是有學生在好不容易把我的模板背得滾瓜爛熟之后還是只能得一個5分呢？這是我當時非常想不通的一個問題，anyway，盡管效果各異，但當時我在日常教學當中還是堅持保留”快速模板”這個單元，直到2007年我來到新東方……

當我作為一個新人來到新東方的時候，發(fā)現新東方的老師基本上都是非常不屑模板套句這類東西的。當時新東方對外普遍的說法是“新東方的雅思教學早就過了那種背機經抄模板的原始時代”了。的確，到北京去培訓和全國各個新東方分部教雅思寫作的同行交流的時候，大家也幾乎眾口一詞：“用模板就好比一個上身穿 Armani西裝的人下半身就穿著一條山寨版的Arnani短褲”，是和一個考生的整體語言水平不協(xié)調的，因此在實際使用過程中，往往會適得其反，即本來不用模板還能得一個6分的，用了模板以后反而只能拿個5分。

作為當時一個有覺悟的新東方新老師，我又作出了一個重大的決定：追隨組織大流，毅然把曾經在我的雅思寫作課程中占據4小時左右長度的“快速模板”這個單元從我的講義當中.永久地刪除了！

現在是2009年，我不用模板已經很多年（其實也就是兩年），但對于模板和套句在雅思寫作當中的作用，說實話，I was still not so sure——你注意到了，我用的是一般過去時——which means 我現在對于這個問題已經有了答案，因為我遇到了她： Vanessa Jakeman，英國人，包括劍橋系列叢書在內的多部雅思著作的作者，英國雅思界權威。

前一段時間我們部門正好有幸邀請到老太太吃飯，借著這個難得的機會，大家都把平時教學中碰到的問題向老太太請教，我的問題就是關于模板和套句：這玩意兒在雅思考試里到底是“這個可以有”還是“這個真不能有”？

老太太給我的回答可以用一個詞回答：Relevance（相關性）。Yes, it's all about relevance.也就是說套句也好模板也好，的確“有時候可以用有時候不能用”，關鍵取決于你用的是否切題。老太太有說到很多低分雅思考生的問題正是在于他們手里都有一套模板，但他們不知道哪些題目里這個模板是能用的，哪些是不能用的。比如最近一次雅思考試（2009.4.18）的作文考題：

Some people believe that if products are of good quality or meet people’s needs, people will buy them naturally.So advertisements are not necessary and no more than a form of entertainment.To what extent do you agree or disagree?(抽象類)

如果有人寫：Today, the issue that advertisements are not important and only a kind of entertainment has aroused great controversy......那么這個考生馬上就會被嚴重扣分，因為issue是指“有爭議的問題”（比如“安樂死是否應合法化”

之類的），而這個 topic中提到的“廣告不是不可或缺的而只是一種娛樂”純粹是部分人的personal opinion,并不是issue，因此這里盲目照搬套句模板就一定會被扣分。而如果像今年2月7號的作文考題：

Some people believe that rich countries provide poorer countries with other types of help rather than financial aid.To what extent do you agree or disagree?(政府決策類)

如果用剛才的模板來寫開頭 : Today, the issue whether rich countries ought to provide poorer countries with other types of help instead of financial aid has aroused great controversy......按照老太太的說法就完全沒有問題，因為rich countries到底應該向poorer countries提供怎么樣的援助本來就是屬于有爭議的問題，的確是issue沒錯。

綜上所述，其實套句或者模板在雅思寫作中還是可以用的——當然是在你能夠確保正確使用的前提之下。我會不會在作文課恢復“快速模板”這個單元？......Well, I am afraid my answer has to be “NO”.因為畢竟模板套句之類的還是比較適合英語寫作基礎比較薄弱的考生，大多數水平中等或以上的考生完全有能力不需要借助模板就能夠拿到6分或6分以上的成績?；蛘哌@樣說可能更清楚：使用模板的前提是考生能正確識別哪些題目能用模板，用什么模板。而基礎較差的考生往往做不到這一點所以模板不適合他們。而能夠做到這一點的考生基本上英語實力已經達到一定的高度，完全可以靠自己的能力獨立寫出一篇得分在6分以上的雅思作文，所以也不需要模板。因此，我們可以確定模板套句對大多數考生基本無用，除非你是這樣一個考生：英語基礎較差，自己無法獨立寫出完整正確的段落，手里握有好幾套模板，而且對于各種不同的 topics適合用哪一種具體的模板都有正確的認識，并能相應地準確使用之……問題是，在地球上有這種人存在嗎？
