美國留學(xué)申請心得-托福實用篇
很早之前就想寫個留學(xué)申請的心得體會,但當(dāng)時還是覺得有了結(jié)果再寫比較好。如今我已經(jīng)收到弗吉尼亞大學(xué)的offer(1月25收到,應(yīng)該是第一輪),有這么個好學(xué)?!氨5住保乙哺曳判牡膶懴挛业母邢肓?,希望可以為后來人所借鑒。
首先說一下本人的背景,以作參考:211+985本科,基礎(chǔ)自然科學(xué)中的一門,GPA 3.6/4.0,major GPA 3.7/4.0,排名專業(yè)Top 5。GRE General考砸了,V和Q均有硬傷??我的專業(yè)GRE Sub屬于必考,分?jǐn)?shù)夠用。兩次可取的托福成績分別為100(27+26+20+27),99(25+27+22+25)。
我是在得知GRE成績后,經(jīng)好友推薦和張偉用老師取得了聯(lián)系。當(dāng)時真是有一種萬念俱灰的感覺,連Q都很悲劇的GRE,我一直以為這是個拖后腿的成績。好在張老師一直在鼓勵我,才堅定了我繼續(xù)沖擊牛校的信心。而后來我也就此決定和金東方簽約,此篇文章也獻(xiàn)給金東方的老師們,和你們合作一直很愉快,多謝老師們!或許是出于厭學(xué)或是太過熱愛理科學(xué)習(xí),本人的英語從高中就開始悲劇,位處班級中下游,高考(微博)也不到120分(滿分150)。大一渾渾噩噩連過了四六級,四級成績還說的過去,500+,六級成績450+。英語一向是給我拖后腿的科目,也經(jīng)常被我忽略。寫這些主要是為了給在英語方面無天資的同學(xué)們一些鼓勵,我這水平都能考到托福100,你們也行!時間:我是二戰(zhàn)托??嫉?00分的,累積復(fù)習(xí)時間約一個半月(算上一戰(zhàn)的底子)。保險起見,我認(rèn)為備考托福,兩個月的周期是夠用的。TPO 1-19做了兩遍。
單詞:萬物之本。雖說考托福不需要額外的詞匯量,但考過GRE的朋友再考托福就爽一些也證明了詞匯量的重要性。起碼閱讀詞匯題基本可以做到秒殺。在此我只想糾正一個錯誤概念,GRE單詞沒用是純扯淡。至少我在考完GRE之后再看英文文字的時候總會有恍然大悟的感覺:“哦,這個單詞在弄GRE的時候背過!”關(guān)于單詞的一個訣竅就是,試試楊鵬的《17天搞定GRE單詞》方法。我最后只有一個半月準(zhǔn)備筆考,所以是在沒時間了,逼得自己真的17天過了6遍GRE單詞。好多人都沒堅持住這17天(三個list為一組),或許你可以試試25天(兩個list為一組),這樣負(fù)擔(dān)會小很多。但楊鵬背單詞的方法(按照艾賓豪特遺忘曲線車輪式背誦)還是非??茖W(xué)的,并且記得牢!以下再從聽說讀寫四個方面談?wù)勍懈5膫鋺?zhàn)。聽:
核心就是:聽寫是提高聽力水平的最有效途徑。按照精聽、半精聽、泛聽幾個步驟,聽力水平的進(jìn)步指日可待也。
精聽:方法很簡單,去小馬過河等托福備考網(wǎng)站下載老托福的聽力段子(新托福聽力段子太 長)和別人默寫完畢的標(biāo)答,每天聽寫一篇即可。我建議用電腦聽寫,還能練習(xí)英文打字速度。網(wǎng)上也有很多下載聽寫軟件的資源,把你聽好的和標(biāo)答先后粘到軟件里,電腦會自動幫你檢查。每天聽一小時,堅持一個月,你的聽力便會有大進(jìn)展。剛開始肯定會錯很多,所以不要太過打擊,因為大部分人都這樣。
半精聽:聽寫屬于精聽范疇,另有推薦科學(xué)美國人60s,半精聽范疇。那個語速很快,本人當(dāng)時還要準(zhǔn)備sub考試和課題研究,就沒做??茖W(xué)美國人60s的使用方法是,開始先對照文字多聽幾篇,最后能做到復(fù)述出來即可。
泛聽:有時間的同學(xué)再推薦進(jìn)行泛聽練習(xí),去網(wǎng)易公開課板塊找你感興趣的科目,去聽聽國外老師的講課。記住要在聽的同時記筆記,這樣能幫你集中注意力。這件事也可以在你復(fù)習(xí)累的時候做做,寓教于樂,何樂不為。
其實看美劇、英劇、聽英文歌也是可以提高聽力水平的,不過那樣提高起來周期很長。在我看來起碼需要一年以上。故而不推薦此法作為短期內(nèi)托福聽力備戰(zhàn)的方法。說:
我的speaking分?jǐn)?shù)最后也算不上多好,簡要說一下我的“必殺技”吧。就是事先把機(jī)經(jīng)查好,按照機(jī)經(jīng)的話題挨個準(zhǔn)備段子寫好。念段子同時錄音,然后把錄音放到自己的Mp3里來回來去的聽。聽自己念段子不費時間,我是見縫插針,刷牙洗臉、吃飯喝湯、去自習(xí)室的路上都聽著。久而久之,自己的段子就能脫口而出了。另外記得機(jī)經(jīng)的段子是可以相互借鑒的,不必拘泥于機(jī)經(jīng)。本人三戰(zhàn)托福的時候就碰見自己完全沒練過的話題,但轉(zhuǎn)念一想之前準(zhǔn)備的XX段子可以借鑒,于是乎東借一段西借一段,最后口語的第一部分得了good,口語總分也漲了兩分。當(dāng)然,多準(zhǔn)備一些段子是非常有必要的,省得到時候借鑒都不知道去哪里找。讀:
我閱讀一向不是很好,在此著實不敢指點江山。在我看來,提高閱讀的唯一途徑就是多讀,TPO來回來去的做。剛開始會錯很多,做到最后,就好了。在此向大家推薦一本書,楊鵬的GRE長難句教程。很不幸,這本書我沒堅持使用完。各位如果有時間,把長難句里面的句子讀通讀順,甚至背下來。則閱讀功底定會大大增長。寫:
托福寫作是有一定套路的。不像雅思要求那么高,還需要語言優(yōu)美等亮點并存才給予高分。托福寫作:把你想表達(dá)的東西表達(dá)清楚即可。有人說托福大作為拼的是字?jǐn)?shù),或許有道理,我只給出我的數(shù)據(jù)給大家個參考:一戰(zhàn)大作文350詞,等級fair,總分記不清了;二戰(zhàn)托福大作文約520詞,等級是good,總分27;三戰(zhàn)托福大作文450詞,也是good,總分25(小作文莫名其妙給了個fair所以低了兩分)。另外在上新東方GRE寫作課時老師教的一個方法值得推薦。利用好《新概念英語》,將里面中文翻譯好的課文自己漢譯英一遍,然后再參考亞歷山大的原作,看看人家的用詞和你的用詞是怎么不一樣的。說白了就是,相當(dāng)于亞歷山大在給你改作文。這對提高語言水平很有幫助。
