高手

我的一位忘年交，Uncle Wu，是一位一流的功夫高手。一次他給我談到了功夫高手的訓(xùn)練方式：他們走進(jìn)一間房子，房子的四周貼著有字的紙，同時(shí)有五六個(gè)人向他進(jìn)攻，他需要一邊抵御來自四周的進(jìn)攻，一邊把墻上的字讀出來。我覺得有趣極了，立刻慫恿他表演一下。

他聳聳肩膀，說“其實(shí)生活中我們天天不都在這樣做嗎？”我懂得他的冷幽默。生活的高手和功夫大師一樣，他們每天都不斷被現(xiàn)實(shí)進(jìn)攻，卻依然能夠?qū)Ｗ?mèng)想。

我的生活呢？置身于省重點(diǎn)高中重點(diǎn)班，我的敵人們無蹤無影，但又無處不在。分?jǐn)?shù)與排名給我一記上勾拳，沉悶的學(xué)習(xí)氛圍和無趣的厚厚課本給我一記左直拳，宿舍、教室、食堂三點(diǎn)一線的重復(fù)生活給我一個(gè)正踹！我常常感覺自己被緊逼著、被圍攻著、被無形的敵人推擠著走在一條看不見的未來的路上。我想要改變，可放眼所及之處都是一樣的情景，我無能為力。

2009年12月23日，在寢室昏黃的燈光下又一次與化學(xué)方程式鏖戰(zhàn)到12點(diǎn)鐘，耳邊還是室友們“沙沙沙”的動(dòng)筆聲，我看著窗外流光溢彩的夜景，突然問自己：“龔芮瑤，你想要什么？如果這樣的教育不是你渴望的，這樣的生活不是你想要的，你想追逐怎樣的夢(mèng)想？如果現(xiàn)實(shí)沒能給你，為什么不去創(chuàng)造一個(gè)？”

今天的我，依然對(duì)2009年12月23日窗邊書桌旁的龔芮瑤心懷感激。她對(duì)著窗子玻璃中光線反射的自己，向生命發(fā)問。她慢慢地聽到內(nèi)心的回應(yīng)，記錄下了51條自己的夢(mèng)想。它們不算轟轟烈烈，很多都是一直想要嘗試卻從沒做過的一些事，例如種一盆植物、織一條圍巾、擺小攤、過一天大學(xué)生活、獨(dú)自旅行、去我的dream school讀大學(xué)。從寫下這一串夢(mèng)想后，她的生活開始改變。她的目光不再浪費(fèi)時(shí)間緊盯著敵人，心態(tài)更加平和，她抬頭專注目標(biāo)，專注夢(mèng)想。像一位功夫高手那樣。

我開始更高效地學(xué)習(xí)，擠出更多的空閑時(shí)間逐一動(dòng)手去做這些事，并且用博客記錄下來。我發(fā)現(xiàn)完成這一件件小事是一個(gè)特別有意思的過程，給了我太多新鮮的體驗(yàn)。在演唱會(huì)現(xiàn)場(chǎng)擺攤賣熒光棒讓我第一次對(duì)靠雙手掙錢有了親身的感悟；花了一周第一次織圍巾，爸爸收到這份我親手編織的生日禮物時(shí)的表情讓我體會(huì)到為家人付出的值得；在川外的一天模擬大學(xué)生活讓我對(duì)即將到來的大學(xué)生活憧憬不已。2010年的夏天，我背上背包，享受著獨(dú)行的艱難與驕傲。我走進(jìn)了哈爾濱“東方莫斯科”中西合璧的18世紀(jì)東方巴洛克建筑。我騎馬飛奔在一望無際的內(nèi)蒙古草原，心也被草原拓展到無垠。我在西藏膜拜獨(dú)特的藏傳佛教的神靈，被大昭寺門前每天磕1000個(gè)長頭的虔誠信徒打動(dòng)。在美國home stay夏令營我體驗(yàn)了美國的風(fēng)土人情，從home stay爺爺奶奶身上我學(xué)會(huì)了接受多元文化，從多方面客觀地看待事物。法國之行，我不僅擁抱了夜的巴黎，在盧浮宮步入真正的藝術(shù)殿堂享受對(duì)美的欣賞，而在與母親走丟后，與無名叔叔相處的短暫時(shí)光讓我學(xué)會(huì)了面對(duì)困難要冷靜勇敢。我在西南邊陲古老純凈的麗江白沙古鎮(zhèn)，偶然受邀到一位75歲的納西族老婆婆劉美枝家里做客。她三年來每天邀請(qǐng)各國的陌生游客到她的家里，只是單純地做客，聊天、喝茶、吃飯，絕不要回報(bào)。我對(duì)自己進(jìn)門前對(duì)她的將信將疑和戒備感到慚愧，她真誠淳樸的笑容像一縷陽光驅(qū)散了十幾年來現(xiàn)代社會(huì)投射在我心中的那些陰霾——冷漠、懷疑、猜忌、唯利，帶我回到純粹和愛。

At present, the last thing remains unfinished on my list, which is to enter into the dream university.In order for me to obtain the resolution to this objective that I’ve been preparing for all this time for 3 years.With toil, the process is still full of joy and contentment, for I deeply understand that it’s always worthwhile to go all out to fulfill your dream.Standing far away at the other side of the Pacific Ocean, she possesses the most advanced teaching concepts and mechanisms, the most outstanding professors and students, the most prodigious scholarly atmosphere as well as the most splendid curricular life.I will be receiving the best education there—not for any particular expertise or profession, but becoming a better person who unceasingly cultivates herself to approach perfection.Undoubtedly, there is going to be challengers in that room, and I may even confront with some unprecedentedly strong competitors or still enemies.However, I will have my radiant eyes staring firmly at these dreams just like a kung fu master, forever fixing his eyes upon the words on the wall, because that’s the real reason why I make my entrances into that room.

Limbo

My parents’ divorce was final.The house had been sold and the day had come to move.Thirty years of the family’s life was now crammed into the garage.The two-by-fours that ran the length of the walls were the only uniformity among the clutter of boxes, furniture, and memories.All was frozen in limbo between the life just passed and the one to come.The sunlight pushing its way through the window splattered against a barricade of boxes.Like a fluorescent river, it streamed down the sides and flooded the cracks of the cold, cement floor.I stood in the doorway between the house and garage and wondered if the sunlight would ever again penetrate the memories packed inside those boxes.For an instant, the cardboard boxes appeared as tombstones, monuments to those memories.The furnace in the corner, with its huge tubular fingers reaching out and disappearing into the wall, was unaware of the futility of trying to warm the empty house.The rhythmical whir of its effort hummed the elegy for the memories boxed in front of me.I closed the door, sat down on the step, and listened reverently.The feeling of loss transformed the bad memories into not-so-bad, the not-so-bad memories into good, and committed the good ones to my mind.Still, I felt as vacant as the house inside.A workbench to my right stood disgustingly empty.Not so much as a nail had been left behind.I noticed, for the first time, what a dull, lifeless green it was.Lacking the disarray of tools that used to cover it, now it seemed as out of place as a bathtub in the kitchen.In fact, as I scanned the room, the only things that did seem to belong were the cobwebs in the corners.A group of boxes had been set aside from the others and stacked in front of the workbench.Scrawled like graffiti on the walls of dilapidated buildings were the words “Salvation Army.” Those words caught my eyes as effectively as a flashing neon sign.They reeked of irony.“Salvation-was a bit too late for this family,” I mumbled sarcastically to myself.The houseful of furniture that had once been so carefully chosen to complement and blend with the color schemes of the various rooms was indiscriminately crammed together against a single wall.The uncoordinated colors combined in turmoil and lashed out in the greyness of the room.I suddenly became aware of the coldness of the garage, but I didn’t want to go back inside the house, so I made my way through the boxes to the couch.I cleared a space to lie down and curled up, covering myself with my jacket.I hoped my father would return soon with the truck so we could empty the garage and leave the cryptic silence of parting lives behind.（選自Patterns: A Short Prose Reader, by Mary Lou Conlin, published by Houghton Mifflin, 1983.）

第五屆“《英語世界》杯”翻譯大賽通知

“《英語世界》杯”翻譯大賽肇始于2010年，由商務(wù)印書館《英語世界》雜志社主辦。為推動(dòng)翻譯學(xué)科的進(jìn)一步發(fā)展，促進(jìn)中外文化交流，我們將秉承“給力英語學(xué)習(xí)，探尋翻譯之星”的理念，于2014年5月繼續(xù)舉辦第五屆“《英語世界》杯”翻譯大賽，誠邀廣大翻譯愛好者積極參與，比秀佳譯。

本屆大賽由悉尼翻譯學(xué)院獨(dú)家贊助。悉尼翻譯學(xué)院成立于2009年，是在澳大利亞教育部注冊(cè)的一家專業(yè)翻譯學(xué)院。學(xué)院相關(guān)課程由澳大利亞翻譯認(rèn)證管理局（NAATI）認(rèn)證。該院面向海內(nèi)外招生，以構(gòu)建“一座跨文化的橋梁”為目標(biāo)，力圖培養(yǎng)具有國際視野和跨文化意識(shí)的涉及多語種的口筆譯人才。
