如何寫出一篇合格的 PS（個(gè)人陳述）

在申請美國或歐洲的大部分大學(xué)（本科 / 研究生1）時(shí)，一般都會(huì)要求提交一篇個(gè)人陳述，英文是 Personal Statement，也就是我們常說的 PS。2要撰寫一篇合格的個(gè)人陳述，我們首先需要知道我們所申請的大學(xué)希望在我們的個(gè)人陳述上看到什么，其實(shí)也就是大學(xué)對我們個(gè)人陳述的要求。這一點(diǎn)幾乎所有的大學(xué)都沒有太大區(qū)別，一般來說一篇合格的個(gè)人陳述要包含以下幾點(diǎn)：

1.為什么要申請這個(gè)大學(xué)及這個(gè)項(xiàng)目（專業(yè)）？（動(dòng)機(jī)）2.你有哪些經(jīng)歷和材料可以證明你能夠勝任這個(gè)項(xiàng)目未來的學(xué)習(xí)和研究？（現(xiàn)在的水平）

3.你期待未來在這個(gè)項(xiàng)目中獲得什么，有什么計(jì)劃？（未來展望）

4.一般要求篇幅不超過兩頁 A4 紙或更少。（字?jǐn)?shù)限制）

我建議在申請任何一所大學(xué)之前，一定要先去閱讀該大學(xué)對申請材料的要求，自然也包含對 PS 的要求。但就我看到的絕大多數(shù)大學(xué)的要求而言，如果你的 PS 能夠準(zhǔn)確覆蓋到上面的四項(xiàng)基本要求，然后再針對具體大學(xué)的要求做一些細(xì)節(jié)調(diào)整和修改的話，基本上可以算是一篇合格的 PS。在本文剩下的部分我將分別針對這四點(diǎn)——?jiǎng)訖C(jī)、現(xiàn)在的水平、未來展望、字?jǐn)?shù)限制——給出撰寫的方法和建議。

1.動(dòng)機(jī)

既然已經(jīng)決定要申請一所大學(xué)的某個(gè)項(xiàng)目，那么一定有你的理由和動(dòng)機(jī)。說到理由和動(dòng)機(jī)，每個(gè)人不盡相同，只要不違背常理，你只需要放心大膽地把你自己為什么要上這個(gè)學(xué)校寫出來即可。當(dāng)然如果你說你也不知道為什么要申請這個(gè)學(xué)校，那么我覺得放棄是一個(gè)很不錯(cuò)的選擇。

但也有一些朋友會(huì)說，我有一些模模糊糊的想法，不知道該如何清晰地抓住它。對于這部分朋友我倒是可以給出幾點(diǎn)思考的建議，從以下幾個(gè)角度入手，也許你能夠明白自己為什么要上這個(gè)大學(xué)和這個(gè)專業(yè)：

想想自己的理想。

你想成為什么樣的人？

這個(gè)項(xiàng)目的學(xué)習(xí)是否有助于實(shí)現(xiàn)我的理想？

如果有，具體能實(shí)現(xiàn)到哪一步？

想想自己的職業(yè)規(guī)劃。

未來你想從事什么樣的職業(yè)？為什么？

這個(gè)項(xiàng)目的學(xué)習(xí)是否對你未來想要從事的職業(yè)有幫助？

如果有，具體是什么？

如果你正在學(xué)習(xí)或?qū)W習(xí)過相同或相關(guān)專業(yè)，想想學(xué)習(xí)過程中是否有過觸動(dòng)你的經(jīng)歷。

如果有，是什么樣的觸動(dòng)？ 這樣的觸動(dòng)是否能夠讓你作出接下來的幾年從事該專業(yè)學(xué)習(xí)或研究的理由？

如果你沒有學(xué)習(xí)過相關(guān)專業(yè)（無論申請本科還是研究生），想想為什么要選擇這個(gè)專業(yè)。

從上面這幾點(diǎn)建議，你也可以看出，個(gè)人陳述是一個(gè)整體，動(dòng)機(jī)部分和下面的第 2 部分（現(xiàn)在的水平）和第 3 部分（未來展望）內(nèi)容密切相關(guān)。事實(shí)正是如此，個(gè)人陳述的其他部分主要作用就是用來證明你自己有能力追隨你現(xiàn)在內(nèi)心的動(dòng)機(jī)，并且有決心堅(jiān)持下去。說白了，其實(shí)就是說明在這個(gè)項(xiàng)目學(xué)習(xí)或研究是你真正內(nèi)心所向，而不是一時(shí)沖動(dòng)：

? 如果你真正想學(xué)這個(gè)專業(yè)，那么你肯定會(huì)花很長時(shí)間準(zhǔn)備，所以你應(yīng)該證明你準(zhǔn)備過了，準(zhǔn)備好了，這正是下面第 2 部分（現(xiàn)在的水平）要證明的事情。

? 如果你真正想學(xué)這個(gè)專業(yè)，那么你肯定對未來的學(xué)習(xí)或研究有自己的計(jì)劃或想法，這正是下面第 3 部分（未來展望）要證明的事情。

2.現(xiàn)在的水平就對申請的作用而言，這部分其實(shí)才是 PS 最重要的部分。所謂「現(xiàn)在的水平」，并不是一句「我水平很高」就可以解決的，除了對自己現(xiàn)在水平簡單的描述之外，至少要做到以下兩點(diǎn)：

? 你需要用具體的經(jīng)歷和事實(shí)證明自己水平很高；

? 你需要證明你如此高的水平對未來的學(xué)習(xí)或研究有幫助。

對于第一點(diǎn)而言我們要做的是收集整理自己過去幾年所做的事情。這絕非易事，不信的話你可以試著回憶一下半個(gè)月之前你做了什么，試著說出昨天你瀏覽的網(wǎng)頁中的五條消息。相信很多人要費(fèi)一番力氣，甚至有些人根本無法給出答案。那我們應(yīng)該怎么辦呢？

如果你準(zhǔn)備在幾年之后申請，出于種種原因看到了這篇文章，那不妨聽聽我的一些建議：

? 使用一些時(shí)間管理軟件。如果你一直有使用時(shí)間管理軟件的習(xí)慣，并且這些軟件可以在云端存儲(chǔ)你放到任務(wù)列表的每一件事情的話，你想回顧這幾年所做的事情，無非就是把任務(wù)列表按照項(xiàng)目分類梳理一遍而已。有很多時(shí)間管理方法能讓你很方便得做到這一點(diǎn)。從今天起開始使用，幾年后你想看你做了什么就會(huì)變得無比容易。

? 寫日記或周記。同樣道理，如果你今天開始寫日記，幾年后翻翻日記本或者日記軟件就知道這些年做了什么。

? 制作一份隨時(shí)更新的簡歷。假設(shè)自己現(xiàn)在就要去求職或申請，那么我的簡歷應(yīng)該是什么樣子，然后每個(gè)月更新一個(gè)版本。這個(gè)簡歷最終可以用到你的申請中，通過歷史版本的對照，你也可以知道自己究竟做了哪些事情。

如果你現(xiàn)在打算申請，并且湊巧沒有我上面說的這些好習(xí)慣的話，也不用太擔(dān)心，只需要做好心理準(zhǔn)備：一些事情如果沒有提前準(zhǔn)備的話，之后處理起來肯定會(huì)稍微麻煩一點(diǎn)。作為生活在互聯(lián)網(wǎng)時(shí)代的人，我們幾乎處在一種每天連線的狀態(tài)，因此我們肯定會(huì)有一些蹤跡留在互聯(lián)網(wǎng)上，這些蹤跡首先就是我們回憶的重要線索，以下一些網(wǎng)站的信息也許會(huì)有幫助：

? LinkedIn 領(lǐng)英。如果你有在這個(gè)網(wǎng)站上更新信息的習(xí)慣，那就太好了。他的作用無異于一份隨時(shí)更新的簡歷，而且你一般不會(huì)刪除上面的信息，你所做的事情基本上可以一目了然地呈現(xiàn)出來。? 豆瓣網(wǎng)。如果你是一個(gè)豆瓣網(wǎng)的忠實(shí)用戶，上面應(yīng)該會(huì)有你看過的書、電影、聽過的唱片的信息，甚至?xí)心阌眠^哪些東西、參加過哪些同城活動(dòng)的記錄。這些信息的記錄也是你過去幾年經(jīng)歷的重要線索。比如我知道一本書對我選擇這個(gè)專業(yè)有很重要的影響，同時(shí)看這本書的時(shí)候還正在和某老師從事一些其他工作，也對申請有幫助，這些信息也許可以通過你讀這本書的時(shí)間串聯(lián)起來。

? Facebook / 校內(nèi)網(wǎng)（人人網(wǎng)）。很多校內(nèi)活動(dòng)可能會(huì)在這些平臺發(fā)布，對于你大學(xué)四年參加了哪些活動(dòng)應(yīng)該會(huì)有記錄。

? 微博 / 微信朋友圈及其他社交網(wǎng)絡(luò)。上面分享的信息因人而異，如果你正好是個(gè)社交網(wǎng)絡(luò)話癆的話，一定也能從中憶起自己的似水年華。

如果你以上這些網(wǎng)站都不常去，并且不使用任何社交網(wǎng)絡(luò)，那么我們只能慢慢依靠自己的記憶了。你不妨在自己的手機(jī)上新建個(gè)文檔，隨時(shí)記錄自己想到的過去幾年的事情，差不多一兩個(gè)月以后，你應(yīng)該可以找回足夠的記憶。除非，真的沒什么記憶。

等你收集好了自己的經(jīng)歷之后，你需要簡單地分類整理，比如你可以按學(xué)習(xí)、實(shí)習(xí)、課外活動(dòng)這樣的角度分類，也可以按照時(shí)間去劃分。我們把自己過去扒了個(gè)底朝天之后，發(fā)現(xiàn)自己水平確實(shí)很高（如果沒有這感覺，請把申請學(xué)校的排名往后調(diào)整 10 位，如果還不行，再調(diào)整 10 位，以此類推），那么接下來要做的事情就是，證明自己如此之高的水平對于之后的學(xué)習(xí)和研究有幫助。

要做到這一點(diǎn)，其實(shí)也并不復(fù)雜。在自己這些經(jīng)歷中按照與自己所申請的專業(yè)的相關(guān)度進(jìn)行排名，排在前面的基本上都可以證明你有能力學(xué)習(xí)該項(xiàng)目或?qū)I(yè)。但如果你發(fā)現(xiàn)排在第一的竟然也無法證明自己的能力，那么我會(huì)慎重的建議你換一個(gè)專業(yè)，同時(shí)也希望你慎重考慮一下自己是否真正喜歡現(xiàn)在所申請的專業(yè)。不妨問問自己：

你追求的是一種浪漫感覺，還是那不必負(fù)責(zé)任的熱情？～《別怕我傷心》（詞：李宗盛）

3.未來展望

在證明自己了自己確實(shí)有實(shí)力完成未來的學(xué)業(yè)或研究工作之后，接下來要做的是證明自己確實(shí)也想這么干——如果你真想了，不會(huì)沒有什么計(jì)劃吧？ 未來展望這部分可以結(jié)合自己的動(dòng)機(jī)進(jìn)行書寫。如果你明確了為什么要申請這個(gè)項(xiàng)目，那么在未來展望部分你需要提供一個(gè)計(jì)劃，這個(gè)計(jì)劃完成之后，可以實(shí)現(xiàn)你的目標(biāo)，或者至少離你的目標(biāo)更近。撰寫時(shí)需要注意：

? 確保你的計(jì)劃在這個(gè)項(xiàng)目中是可行的。比如，如果申請的是偏應(yīng)用型的碩士，而你未來的計(jì)劃是在項(xiàng)目中鍛煉自己的學(xué)術(shù)能力，為之后申請博士打基礎(chǔ)，那么你的計(jì)劃在可行性方面就會(huì)打折扣。這種情況下顯然一個(gè)研究型碩士更適合你。

? 確保你的計(jì)劃可以給該項(xiàng)目或?qū)W校作出貢獻(xiàn)。申請本科的朋友可以不用考慮這一點(diǎn)，但如果你申請的是碩士或博士，你能給這個(gè)項(xiàng)目帶來什么，可能就非常重要了。尤其是博士，你的科研成果本身也是項(xiàng)目榮譽(yù)的一部分，而如果你技能出眾，可以解決項(xiàng)目原本解決不了的一些問題，很有可能就成為你申請成功的理由。

4.字?jǐn)?shù)限制

最后要注意的一點(diǎn)是，絕大多數(shù)個(gè)人陳述都有字?jǐn)?shù)限制，而且一般要求不超過兩頁。即使沒有特別字?jǐn)?shù)要求，我們通常建議的篇幅也是一頁半到兩頁之間。如果你能夠按照前面的要求認(rèn)真收集材料，那么我相信寫到這個(gè)篇幅應(yīng)該沒有任何問題。事實(shí)上，我們經(jīng)常碰到的一個(gè)問題其實(shí)是材料過多，以至于 PS 的篇幅過長，這個(gè)時(shí)候我們就需要對材料進(jìn)行一些刪減。這著實(shí)是個(gè)難題。

作為人類的一分子，我們總是有自戀虛榮的一面，看到自己這么多閃閃發(fā)亮的事跡，總是想每一件都講給人聽，所以當(dāng)我們要?jiǎng)h減材料的時(shí)候，每刪掉一個(gè)字都像剜掉一塊肉一般。如果你實(shí)在不知道改如何下手，下面是一些可行的建議：

? 刪掉與你申請的專業(yè)或項(xiàng)目無關(guān)的信息。在第二部分我建議你按照相關(guān)性對自己的材料排序，其實(shí)有一個(gè)很重要得目的就是幫你刪減材料，但一定要注意在搜集資料的時(shí)候先不要管相關(guān)性的問題，否則容易限制思路，而且有些相關(guān)性并不是一下子能想到的。

? 刪掉其他申請材料中已經(jīng)明確體現(xiàn)出來的信息。比如如果你已經(jīng)提交了成績單，學(xué)習(xí)成績方面的內(nèi)容似乎就可以刪掉，除非你的學(xué)習(xí)成績是一個(gè)獨(dú)一無二的特點(diǎn)。

? 優(yōu)先保留和其他材料相互印證的信息。這一點(diǎn)和上一點(diǎn)并不矛盾，由于學(xué)校的公信力，你的成績單可以直接證明你的學(xué)術(shù)能力。但要證明你在其他方面的能力，尤其是和他人合作的一些故事，就不能只聽你一面之詞了。比如你和學(xué)校某老師一起合作完成了某個(gè)項(xiàng)目，關(guān)于這個(gè)項(xiàng)目的故事如果既能出現(xiàn)在 PS 中，又能出現(xiàn)在這位老師的推薦信里的話，那么故事的說服力就會(huì)增強(qiáng)，除非這位老師寫的內(nèi)容和你寫的有出入。

? 優(yōu)先保留體現(xiàn)自己獨(dú)特性的信息。這一點(diǎn)很重要，想要在人群中脫穎而出，一定要講明白我和別人哪里不一樣，而這種不一樣如果對未來的學(xué)習(xí)和研究有幫助，那么你就變成了不可替代的選擇。

如果你能夠聽取上面的建議，那么我相信你能夠?qū)懗鲆黄细竦?PS，但注意這只是一篇「合格」的 PS，它只滿足了對 PS 的最基本的要求。不過有一點(diǎn)可以放心，當(dāng)你做到「合格」的時(shí)候，你已經(jīng)比大多數(shù)人強(qiáng)了。

When occasionally reading the master piece Letter to a Young Lawyer by Alan Dershowitz, I was deeply attracted by words such as Lawyer, Justice, Practice Mentality, and Creed of Life.These words led to my further meditation on the qualities of a lawyer---critical thinking, efficient methods to defend one’s opinions, logical mentality.Living in a society in desperate need of justice and rightness, I had determined to devote myself to the cause of law resolutely.And the first thing is to be equipped with professional knowledge and practice skills.Thus, after graduation next year from Chongqing University, which is listed in 211/985 project, I intend to further my study at your university due to your prestigious reputation in this area

With great determination and sense of mission, I devoured the pages to learn and think in and out of class, resulting in the top-ranking score at various courses, for instance, 87% for Lawyers, Notarization and Arbitration Practice;85% for Corporate and Business Law;85% for Financial Law;and 90% for Jurisprudence.Nevertheless, I know that a consistent praise is far away to make my dream realized.Hence I submerged myself in the sea of reference books in the law field, such as The Concept of Law by H.L.A.Hart，An Introduction To The Principles of Morals and Legislation by Jeremy Bentham，Justice in Robes by Ronald Dworkin, Taking Rights Seriously by Ronald Dworkin, Constitution Law of United States, The laws by Plato, etc.Since many cases concerns economic disputes and my second major is economics, I also read some books in this field such as The Economics of Money, Banking and Financial Markets by Frederic.S.Mishkin, Economics by Paul.A.Samuelson，The Problem of Social Cost by Ronald Harry Coase, etc.Apart from that, after a half year’s training, now I am very confident to pass the Judicial Vocational Qualification Test in the near future.I had been the programme manager of SIFE(Student In Free Enterprise)programmes at my university, which is an international non-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders.There I had leaded my team taking a series of social cases among which I would like to share the most unforgettable ones.Our first programme was the Bangbangjun Program.“Bangbangjun” is a typical Chongqing way to call the luggage porters, who are the migrant workers.Suffering from frequent discrimination, they live their lives at the foot of the social ladder.There are some companies to manage their business.Through on-site inspection we found that the situation was worse than our imagination in those companies.Deficiencies and shortages existed everywhere such as in legal security, internal systems, labor rights, and the financial management.With the help of the supervisor

as well as lawyers and business consultant we tried to find universal business modes to benefit as more porters as we can.After 3 years’ endeavor we succeeded in bringing the company with advanced business modes and legal aids, setting up websites and establishing brands, perfecting taxing structure and internal regulations;strengthening employees’ protection and helping the company in refunding.There, my tasks were to lead my team to supervise the operation of the procedures, provide legal guidance in equity and interest allocation, social insurance and the process of refunding.Additionally, I also did researches on the life status of migrant workers and guided them to protect their legal rights.In the end I wrote the annual report for the programme.Much as I applied of my professional skills and felt about the hardships of the migrant works, I congratulated myself that I had chosen such a noble cause.Moreover, I had participated in another programme named FedEx Migrant Workers’ Children Success Skills Program.The aim of the programme was to achieve better communications between migrant worker parents and their children, promote more educational opportunities for these children, and help them to establish a scientific life and social value.In order to lead my team to fulfill the task, I invited professionals to come to offer psychological consultation;gave inspiring speeches, recruited volunteers to teach them social etiquette and hygiene knowledge;and organized books and stationery donation activities.With these management experiences I had a more comprehensive understanding on how to lead a team to fulfill a task, making it so easier in the third programme called Global Entrepreneurship Week in Chongqing University.By patrols speeches and entrepreneur interviewing did we provide a communication and resource-sharing platform for university students.In this way did students could learn from the entrepreneurs’ experience and knowledge in a more vivid way.This time I followed up the whole process from scheme, arrangement, implementing, leading the team to solve problems encountered, especially in the status limitation, content prescription, and school official approval convincing.Besides, I took other programmes as well such as GSVC(Global Social Venture Competition), in which I was responsible for checking agreement and compliance;and EOP(Economic Opportunity Program), in which I took charge of protocoling the framework of their cooperation with primary school.Apart from my practice experience in SIFE, I had another internship in summer vacation in Beijing’s No.1 Intermediate People’s Court, where I had learned basic criminal litigation procedures, connecting processes with public security organ and procuratorial organ and the criminal litigation defending skills.One other internship I had was in Bangbangjun Moving Company from 2009~2011.In that company I helped the staff with my professional advice in checking agreement and compliance;

PS是申請出國留學(xué)時(shí)需要準(zhǔn)備的材料中必不可少的，也是最重要的文書材料之一。當(dāng)所申請的學(xué)校競爭激烈時(shí)，一篇出色的PS會(huì)讓教授以及學(xué)校對你刮目相看，可能使背景不突出的你脫穎而出被理想的學(xué)校錄取，可以說PS是唯一能凸顯你與眾不同的文書材料。

二、怎樣寫好個(gè)人陳述（PS）

1、長度上需短小精悍

PS應(yīng)該是一種既短小又精悍的文體。一般來說一篇PS的正常長度應(yīng)該在六百到八百個(gè)英文單詞之間，不宜過多，也不宜過少。而仍然有相當(dāng)多的申請者選擇寫一篇超長的PS，甚至有些學(xué)生所寫的PS字?jǐn)?shù)達(dá)到三千多字。他們想要將自己的各個(gè)方面的優(yōu)點(diǎn)和成績呈現(xiàn)出來。但是PS不是個(gè)人簡歷的詳細(xì)補(bǔ)充，有許多的信息都可以通過其它得文件來展示。在留學(xué)申請的旺季，面對堆堆積如山的申請文書，一般審查一個(gè)PS的時(shí)間只有短短的2、3分鐘，而那種冗長的PS只會(huì)讓審核者心生厭煩。

2、內(nèi)容上需包括6個(gè)why

即你為什么有興趣在這個(gè)行業(yè)？哪些事情促使你對這個(gè)專業(yè)的興趣不斷增加加深? 為什么覺得此專業(yè)在未來很重要？為什么會(huì)選擇這所學(xué)校？有哪些具體的研究經(jīng)歷和研究項(xiàng)目吸引你？你認(rèn)為自己對該研究領(lǐng)域有沒有價(jià)值？

3、主線上需緊扣主題

Personal Statement
