該實(shí)驗(yàn)是心理學(xué)家菲利普·津巴多1971年在斯坦福大學(xué)進(jìn)行的。實(shí)驗(yàn)把征募來(lái)的通過(guò)了專(zhuān)門(mén)測(cè)試的受試者——24名身心健康、情緒穩(wěn)定的大學(xué)生分成兩組,一組扮作獄警,一組扮作犯人。本來(lái)這個(gè)實(shí)驗(yàn)計(jì)劃是十五天,但到了第六天就宣告終止。終止的原因是該實(shí)驗(yàn)對(duì)扮演囚犯的實(shí)驗(yàn)者造成了傷害。內(nèi)容介紹
斯坦福監(jiān)獄實(shí)驗(yàn)是1971年在斯坦福大學(xué)進(jìn)行的,當(dāng)時(shí)津巴多正在斯坦福大學(xué)任教。津巴多把心理學(xué)系大樓的地下室改裝成監(jiān)獄,花15美元一天請(qǐng)來(lái)了一批學(xué)生參與實(shí)驗(yàn)。這批學(xué)生要參加實(shí)驗(yàn)必須先通過(guò)一次測(cè)試,以證明他們是“心理健康、沒(méi)有疾病的正常人”。
一共有70名來(lái)自美國(guó)各地的學(xué)生申請(qǐng)參與這個(gè)為期兩周的實(shí)驗(yàn),他們絕大多數(shù)是在斯坦福大學(xué)和伯克萊大學(xué)參加夏季課程的學(xué)生。24名學(xué)生通過(guò)了測(cè)試,學(xué)生以隨機(jī)的方式被分成了兩組角色:其中9名學(xué)生擔(dān)任監(jiān)獄中的“囚犯”和9名學(xué)生則以三人一組輪班擔(dān)任“看守”的角色,余下6名則作為實(shí)驗(yàn)候補(bǔ)。
為了實(shí)驗(yàn)更真實(shí)地模擬現(xiàn)實(shí),擔(dān)任“囚犯”的學(xué)生身份以數(shù)字代替,每個(gè)人都穿上犯人的衣服,戴上腳鐐和手銬,有些學(xué)生是在家里被逮捕的,被銬上手銬,戴上牛皮紙頭套,而執(zhí)行逮捕行為的是同意與津巴多合作進(jìn)行實(shí)驗(yàn)的加州警方,面對(duì)呼嘯而去的警方,不明就里的鄰里大為驚訝;而擔(dān)任“看守”角色的學(xué)生則是穿著警服,戴上黑色的墨鏡以增加權(quán)威感,在囚犯進(jìn)牢時(shí),按照監(jiān)獄的正式程序?qū)Ψ溉诉M(jìn)行裸體的搜身,他們擁有一切真實(shí)獄警所擁有的權(quán)力。而自愿參加實(shí)驗(yàn)的學(xué)生們則被告知實(shí)驗(yàn)過(guò)程中,他們所擁有的部分人權(quán)可能被侵犯。
一切如此真實(shí),為的是讓雙方可以真正進(jìn)入預(yù)置的角色。津巴多的模擬監(jiān)獄應(yīng)該不會(huì)發(fā)生什么駭人聽(tīng)聞的事情,畢竟這批所謂的看守和囚犯都是通過(guò)心理測(cè)試證明是“正常的、心理健康的”好人。津巴多也在1996年多倫多舉行的討論會(huì)上坦誠(chéng),在實(shí)驗(yàn)進(jìn)行之前,覺(jué)得有可能只是無(wú)聊的兩個(gè)星期。
實(shí)驗(yàn)開(kāi)始的相遇是尷尬,畢竟對(duì)于看守和囚犯雙方而言,都需要時(shí)間進(jìn)入角色。無(wú)聊的時(shí)光如何打發(fā)?于是這群耳濡目染于當(dāng)時(shí)美國(guó)反越戰(zhàn)**的學(xué)生囚犯開(kāi)始挑戰(zhàn)權(quán)威:撕掉縫制于衣服身上的編號(hào),把自己鎖在牢房?jī)?nèi)不理會(huì)看守的命令,并取笑看守。
看守一下子變得不知所措,作為監(jiān)獄長(zhǎng)和實(shí)驗(yàn)負(fù)責(zé)人的津巴多則告知看守們要自行解決問(wèn)題。于是看守們采取措施對(duì)囚犯進(jìn)行“鎮(zhèn)壓”:脫光囚犯的衣服、把囚犯進(jìn)行數(shù)個(gè)小時(shí)的禁閉、沒(méi)收枕頭和被褥、取消囚犯的進(jìn)餐、強(qiáng)迫囚犯用手清洗馬桶、進(jìn)行俯臥撐或者一些沒(méi)有任何意義的活動(dòng)而羞辱囚犯、剝奪囚犯的睡眠、半夜把囚犯拉出來(lái)清點(diǎn)人數(shù)和進(jìn)行各種屈辱性的活動(dòng)。他們還采用了心理上的分化策略:服從管理的好囚犯會(huì)被提供特權(quán),更好的牢房和伙食。
這些“正常的、心理健康”的好人“看守”學(xué)得好快,如果看過(guò)任何一部關(guān)于監(jiān)獄電影的話(huà),這都是看守的獄警常用的策略。隨著實(shí)驗(yàn)進(jìn)行,看守們采用的懲戒措施日益加重,以至于實(shí)驗(yàn)人員不得不對(duì)他們進(jìn)行提醒。
在實(shí)驗(yàn)進(jìn)行到36個(gè)小時(shí)的時(shí)候,一名囚犯因受到極度精神壓力而出現(xiàn)哭泣、咒罵等各種各樣的歇斯底里癥狀而退出了實(shí)驗(yàn)。實(shí)驗(yàn)僅僅進(jìn)行了不到兩天的時(shí)間,“正常的、心理健康”的一個(gè)好人已經(jīng)被一群“正常的、心理健康的”好人折磨得瀕臨崩潰。
該名編號(hào)為8612的囚犯是第一天率領(lǐng)囚犯反抗和挑戰(zhàn)看守權(quán)利的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)者,因此在看守們的反擊中受到了“特別的照顧”。當(dāng)一系列的懲罰加諸于身后,8612已經(jīng)察覺(jué)這不是一場(chǎng)模擬的實(shí)驗(yàn)、一個(gè)虛擬的監(jiān)獄,而是一個(gè)“不是由政府、而是由心理學(xué)家設(shè)置的真正監(jiān)獄”。當(dāng)8612向津巴多當(dāng)面提出要求的時(shí)候,津巴多也已經(jīng)完全進(jìn)入了監(jiān)獄長(zhǎng)的角色,他考慮的已經(jīng)不是8612的精神狀態(tài),而是如果8612退出,會(huì)引起更多人退出,實(shí)驗(yàn)就無(wú)法進(jìn)行下去了。
于是津巴多像所有的監(jiān)獄電影中的監(jiān)獄長(zhǎng)會(huì)做得一樣,向8612承諾讓看守不再折磨他,給他好的待遇,同時(shí)他提出一個(gè)浮士德式的交易:讓8612回到監(jiān)獄做他的眼線(xiàn),向他提供監(jiān)獄中的信息,如果同意,津巴多就會(huì)遲一點(diǎn)的時(shí)候“釋放”8612。8612答應(yīng)了津巴多,重新回到實(shí)驗(yàn)當(dāng)中。當(dāng)8612回到監(jiān)獄中,其他的囚犯?jìng)冮_(kāi)始意識(shí)到,他們無(wú)法退出,實(shí)驗(yàn)負(fù)責(zé)人員不會(huì)讓他們退出實(shí)驗(yàn)。希望就此幻滅。
津巴多事后回憶他當(dāng)時(shí)的判斷,他覺(jué)得8612是心理上過(guò)于軟弱,無(wú)法承受哪怕是一丁點(diǎn)的壓力,畢竟實(shí)驗(yàn)只進(jìn)行了大概一天的時(shí)間,怎么可能會(huì)那么快就要求退出實(shí)驗(yàn)?zāi)???shí)驗(yàn)還有13天的時(shí)間??!
作為實(shí)驗(yàn)設(shè)計(jì)者、心理學(xué)家的津巴多,本應(yīng)客觀(guān)地評(píng)價(jià)8612的狀態(tài),結(jié)果也被監(jiān)獄長(zhǎng)的角色所逐漸控制被影響他的判斷。這種控制一直持續(xù)到第六天,直到一個(gè)局外人的出現(xiàn),才把津巴多從監(jiān)獄長(zhǎng)的角色中“挽救”了出來(lái)。
而就在8612提出退出的當(dāng)晚(36小時(shí)),當(dāng)津巴多的研究生Craig Haney作為實(shí)驗(yàn)負(fù)責(zé)人之一輪值夜班時(shí),發(fā)現(xiàn)8612“精神已經(jīng)崩潰,強(qiáng)烈要求退出”,8612無(wú)法承受“看守們持續(xù)不斷地騷擾,僅僅是因?yàn)樗诘谝惶祛I(lǐng)導(dǎo)了囚犯對(duì)看守的對(duì)抗。”在同意8612離開(kāi)監(jiān)獄進(jìn)行短暫的休息后,Craig Haney要做出一個(gè)外人看來(lái)很容易,但當(dāng)時(shí)他感覺(jué)極度困難的決定:是同意8612離開(kāi)還是拒絕他的要求?津巴多是他的導(dǎo)師和“老板”,午夜時(shí)分,不能夠騷擾他的休息。同意?畢竟我只是個(gè)二年級(jí)的研究生,這個(gè)實(shí)驗(yàn)花費(fèi)了大量的心血和資金進(jìn)行籌備,讓8612輕易退出便意味著實(shí)驗(yàn)設(shè)計(jì)受到影響,無(wú)疑結(jié)果的準(zhǔn)確性也成疑問(wèn)。但當(dāng)前這個(gè)年輕人的狀態(tài)是他們?cè)谠O(shè)計(jì)實(shí)驗(yàn)時(shí)無(wú)法想象的,不放的話(huà)行嗎?
經(jīng)過(guò)一番掙扎后,Craig Haney還是決定同意8612退出實(shí)驗(yàn)。
津巴多和他的同事第二天早上回到了實(shí)驗(yàn)室,質(zhì)疑為什么Craig Haney同意讓8612退出實(shí)驗(yàn)。經(jīng)過(guò)一番討論之后,津巴多認(rèn)可了Haney的決定。同時(shí),在后備名單中,他們挑選了一位學(xué)生,讓他在當(dāng)天下午加入實(shí)驗(yàn),填補(bǔ)8612的空缺。
而在斯坦福大學(xué)古老而莊嚴(yán)的心理學(xué)大樓地下室,敵對(duì)情緒日益升級(jí):看守們還在繼續(xù)著他們的游戲,想方設(shè)法折磨囚犯;囚犯?jìng)儎t繼續(xù)承受著折磨,以行尸走肉般的順從回應(yīng)。這已經(jīng)不是一場(chǎng)cosplay了,不是一次愉快的暑假回憶,不是一次舒服的打工經(jīng)驗(yàn),而是一次噩夢(mèng)。在試驗(yàn)開(kāi)始的時(shí)候,“看守和囚犯之間沒(méi)有任何的差異性;而在試驗(yàn)持續(xù)了一周以后,他們之間已經(jīng)沒(méi)有任何的相似性了?!?/p>
魔鬼已經(jīng)被釋放出來(lái)了。它獰笑注視著這群曾經(jīng)“健康的、心理正常”的好人,它讓一些“看守們”沉醉于規(guī)訓(xùn)與懲罰的快感;讓部分盡管心理感覺(jué)不對(duì)、但迫于角色與承諾所賦予的服從義務(wù)而不得不配合其他看守,從來(lái)沒(méi)有提出過(guò)異議和反對(duì),只是私下向囚犯提供幫助;它讓仇恨在“囚犯”心中播種,以致試驗(yàn)結(jié)束之后,當(dāng)“看守”們和“囚犯?jìng)儭蓖黄鹩懻摃r(shí),敵對(duì)的情緒讓討論變成了兇惡的對(duì)質(zhì),當(dāng)他們?cè)谠囼?yàn)過(guò)程中接受試驗(yàn)人員的訪(fǎng)談和問(wèn)卷調(diào)查時(shí),他們呈現(xiàn)均是懷疑的情緒,在他們看來(lái),這群最初友好善良的試驗(yàn)人員就是鐵籠的制造者;它讓本應(yīng)客觀(guān)的心理學(xué)家失去了判斷。
試驗(yàn)一直持續(xù)到第六天。監(jiān)獄情況漸進(jìn)式的惡化啟動(dòng)了所有參與者的心理適應(yīng)機(jī)制:一切都是正常的,一切都是如試驗(yàn)設(shè)計(jì)所安排的進(jìn)行。連接替8612進(jìn)入試驗(yàn)的代號(hào)為416的候補(bǔ)學(xué)生最初的“這是個(gè)瘋?cè)嗽骸钡挠∠笠惨呀?jīng)被“這理應(yīng)是個(gè)瘋?cè)嗽骸钡目捶ㄋ?,盡管他最初的時(shí)候以絕食進(jìn)行反抗,但經(jīng)歷了黑房幽禁、獄友在看守鼓動(dòng)下對(duì)他進(jìn)行羞辱的經(jīng)歷后,本應(yīng)最是正常的他換來(lái)的是徹底的孤立,他的絕食對(duì)抗讓看守和囚犯?jìng)儚哪撤N意義上站到了一起。
囚犯?jìng)円詶l件反射式的反應(yīng)接受看守們的各種要求。也有些囚犯以“瘋狂的表演”模仿8612,希望以此換取退出試驗(yàn)的機(jī)會(huì):在試驗(yàn)的第三、第四和第五天,各有一名囚犯被同意退出了試驗(yàn)。第五名囚犯在退出的請(qǐng)求被拒絕后,全身出現(xiàn)皮疹的癥狀,最終退出了試驗(yàn)。
試驗(yàn)過(guò)程中,囚犯?jìng)儗?shí)際上有大量的機(jī)會(huì)接觸外界。在只持續(xù)了六天的試驗(yàn)中,大約有100多人以不同的身份接觸這群囚犯:包括一名真正的典獄官,在接觸了所有的囚犯后,他觀(guān)察到這場(chǎng)模擬試驗(yàn)在這批學(xué)生囚犯身上造成的反應(yīng)與首次坐牢的人非常相似;20多名心理系的學(xué)生從視頻監(jiān)視器和窗戶(hù)中觀(guān)察試驗(yàn);24名囚犯的父母和朋友在探監(jiān)的時(shí)間和囚犯接觸,而其中一位母親在探訪(fǎng)之后尋訪(fǎng)了一位神父,在神父找到了一位律師提供法律咨詢(xún)?nèi)绾巫屗暮⒆用撾x“斯坦福監(jiān)獄”,這名律師在試驗(yàn)的最后一天與所有的囚犯進(jìn)行了訪(fǎng)談。
這100多個(gè)人,包括看守和囚犯,試驗(yàn)的設(shè)計(jì)者、心理學(xué)家津巴多,都沒(méi)有想過(guò)還有一個(gè)選擇:中止試驗(yàn)。他們已經(jīng)成為局中人,被困在以理性和科學(xué)為借口所編織的鐵籠之中,無(wú)法脫身,唯有服從,扮演著各自的角色。
直到試驗(yàn)的第六天,一名年輕的女士的到訪(fǎng)。
當(dāng)Christina Maslach接到津巴多的邀請(qǐng)參與斯坦福監(jiān)獄試驗(yàn)的研究項(xiàng)目時(shí),心里為之一動(dòng)。剛剛獲得斯坦福大學(xué)心理學(xué)博士學(xué)位的她另一重身份,是津巴多的女友。但Christina已經(jīng)獲得了加州大學(xué)伯克萊分校助理教授的職務(wù),正準(zhǔn)備動(dòng)身,分身無(wú)暇的她只好拒絕了愛(ài)人的邀請(qǐng)。
但她還是答應(yīng)了津巴多幫忙做一些訪(fǎng)談。為了對(duì)訪(fǎng)談?dòng)兴鶞?zhǔn)備,她在試驗(yàn)進(jìn)行了大約一周之后的周四晚上來(lái)到了斯坦福監(jiān)獄。一開(kāi)始的印象是平靜,與其中一名看守進(jìn)行了交談之后,她的感覺(jué)是這是一位禮貌、友好和讓人愉快的好人。
而這晚負(fù)責(zé)輪班的是昵稱(chēng)為John Wayne的看守,斯坦福監(jiān)獄最“臭名昭著”的獄警。盡管耳聞John Wayne的作為,Christina見(jiàn)到了John Wayne之后卻感到非常震驚(absolutely stunned):與傳聞相反,John Wayne是一個(gè)絕對(duì)的好人。但直到她開(kāi)始試驗(yàn)觀(guān)察時(shí),看到的卻是完全不同的一個(gè)人:他戴著黑色的墨鏡,手持警棍,身穿制服,放聲嚎叫,痛罵犯人,讓犯人報(bào)數(shù)時(shí)表現(xiàn)出一種粗暴的態(tài)度。
當(dāng)時(shí)正當(dāng)洗浴時(shí)間。洗浴房在監(jiān)獄外,看守把犯人用腳鐐鎖成一列,每個(gè)人都戴上頭套,完全看不到環(huán)境的情況。再把他們帶到洗浴房。津巴多通過(guò)觀(guān)察窗看著發(fā)生在監(jiān)獄的情形,興奮地對(duì)他的女友說(shuō):“快來(lái)看,看一下現(xiàn)在要發(fā)生什么!”“看到?jīng)]有,這場(chǎng)景是太棒了!”但Christina卻把頭轉(zhuǎn)過(guò)去,不忍再看,心里充盈著一種冰涼而作嘔的感覺(jué):如此殘暴的場(chǎng)景讓她感覺(jué)到一種女性置身于男權(quán)世界所產(chǎn)生的無(wú)力感。
隨后,離開(kāi)了試驗(yàn)現(xiàn)場(chǎng)后,津巴多想要知道Christina對(duì)整個(gè)試驗(yàn)的評(píng)價(jià)。但他得到的卻是出乎意料的憤怒、恐懼與淚水:“你對(duì)這些孩子做的事情太糟糕了!”辯論、爭(zhēng)吵,Christina感到害怕,面前這個(gè)不再是她熟悉的愛(ài)人,那個(gè)以愛(ài)生如子聞名斯坦福的溫柔而敏感的心理學(xué)家。他們之間的立場(chǎng)從來(lái)沒(méi)有如此巨大的對(duì)立和分歧,他們之間的爭(zhēng)吵從來(lái)沒(méi)有如此劇烈,如此漫長(zhǎng),留下如此巨大的創(chuàng)傷,她甚至無(wú)法想象以后會(huì)和這樣的一個(gè)人相處。
這場(chǎng)爭(zhēng)吵的結(jié)果是津巴多最終屈服了,從他監(jiān)獄長(zhǎng)的角色、從他對(duì)試驗(yàn)理性的準(zhǔn)確和客觀(guān)的追求中脫身而出,向他的愛(ài)人道歉,并且決定在第二天早上終止試驗(yàn)。召集所有與試驗(yàn)相關(guān)的人一起,反省整個(gè)過(guò)程:一場(chǎng)模擬的試驗(yàn)是如何逐步演化成一個(gè)真正的監(jiān)獄,一個(gè)如此嚴(yán)重的瘋狂之地(madhouse)?
此刻,津巴多感到的不是失望,而是如釋重負(fù),如釋重負(fù)的,還有他和Christina,當(dāng)時(shí)他的女友,后來(lái)變成了他的妻子,之間的關(guān)系。
但真正讓Christina后怕的,是她作為系統(tǒng)挑戰(zhàn)者、不服從者的角色:如果她一直參與試驗(yàn),她能夠有如此巨大的感情觸動(dòng)嗎?如果她參與了設(shè)計(jì),每天目睹事情的發(fā)生而產(chǎn)生心理的適應(yīng)性,眼前的這種瘋?cè)嗽簳?huì)不會(huì)像所有其他參與試驗(yàn)項(xiàng)目的100多個(gè)人一樣,變成一種正常? 她真的不能夠做出肯定的回答。
就像莫羅的那句老話(huà):“我們都是自身經(jīng)歷的囚徒(we are prisoner of our own experience)。” 目的:

24個(gè)大學(xué)男學(xué)生(無(wú)入監(jiān)經(jīng)歷,不吸毒,身體以及心理健康)作為酬勞一天15美元。地點(diǎn):
調(diào)查人員在斯坦福大學(xué)心理系的地下室中建了一個(gè)模擬的監(jiān)獄 過(guò)程:
參與者由警察逮捕,并押至試驗(yàn)地點(diǎn)。以抽簽的形式將參與者分成兩批,12個(gè)人為囚犯,12個(gè)人為獄警。囚犯將先脫掉衣服灑上除虱藥粉,穿上類(lèi)似于女人的連衣裙一樣的白色袍,不能穿底褲,頭戴絲襪,為每個(gè)人編號(hào)來(lái)代替名字,并且在右腳腳踝出有鉸鏈。獄警則穿制服,有警棒,帶不反光的墨鏡(Cool Hand Luke)來(lái)防止目光接觸。由于沒(méi)有鐘表也沒(méi)有窗戶(hù),所以囚犯?jìng)儾⒉恢罆r(shí)間。獄警可隨自己喜好進(jìn)行懲罰。研究小組在當(dāng)?shù)貓?bào)紙上征集志愿者參與監(jiān)獄生活的研究,為期兩周,志愿者每天能得到15美元的報(bào)酬(相當(dāng)于今天的75美元)。有70名應(yīng)征者被招到斯坦福大學(xué)面試,接受一系列心理測(cè)試。這70個(gè)人都是美國(guó)的大學(xué)生。其中24名被認(rèn)為非常健康、正常的人被選中。從24人中間隨機(jī)抽出一半,讓他們飾演監(jiān)獄的看守,余下的一半飾演囚犯。志愿者們都說(shuō)他們更愿意飾演囚犯,部分是因?yàn)樗麄儫o(wú)法想像自己畢業(yè)后會(huì)去做看守,但他們可以想像自己是在坐牢,并以為可以從這一經(jīng)歷中學(xué)到一些東西。志愿者們還被告知,如果被分派去飾演囚犯,他們可能會(huì)被剝奪公民權(quán)利,并且只能得到最低限度的飲食和醫(yī)學(xué)護(hù)理。那些將飾演囚犯的人被告知在某個(gè)周日等在家里。在那一天,令他們感到吃驚的是,他們被真的警察“逮捕”了,隨后被帶到斯坦福大學(xué)心理學(xué)系地下室的模擬監(jiān)獄。第一天,大家還相安無(wú)事,但“囚犯”第二天便發(fā)起了一場(chǎng)暴動(dòng),撕掉囚服上的編號(hào)、拒絕服從命令、取笑看守。津巴多要求看守們采取措施控制住局面,他們照著做了。他們采取的措施包括強(qiáng)迫囚犯做俯臥撐、脫光他們的衣服,拿走他們的飯菜、枕頭、毯子和床、讓他們空著手清洗馬桶,關(guān)禁閉。最后局面完全失控。在第六天,當(dāng)津巴多的同事克里斯?。ê髞?lái)成為他的妻子)受邀來(lái)到實(shí)驗(yàn)場(chǎng)所進(jìn)行觀(guān)察。克里斯丁對(duì)于這項(xiàng)實(shí)驗(yàn)的道德進(jìn)行了質(zhì)疑。津巴多停止了實(shí)驗(yàn)。研究過(guò)程
1971年,8月14日,周日。美國(guó)加利福尼亞。一陣尖銳刺耳的警笛聲劃破了夏日清晨的寧?kù)o,警車(chē)在大學(xué)生湯米·懷特洛的家門(mén)口戛然而止。睡眼惺忪的湯米從床上被拉起來(lái),警察向他宣讀了逮捕令,他陷入了一樁罪行嚴(yán)重的案件。面無(wú)表情的警官向湯米口述了憲法賦予他的權(quán)利,經(jīng)過(guò)搜身,湯米的雙手被扣上了手銬,警車(chē)呼嘯而去。一小時(shí)后,經(jīng)過(guò)登記和留印指紋,湯米被蒙上眼睛,押送到斯坦??h監(jiān)獄。在監(jiān)獄里,他被脫光衣服,噴灑了消毒劑,穿上印有表示身份號(hào)碼的囚服,湯米失去了自己的姓氏,變成了647號(hào)囚犯。另外8名大學(xué)生也這樣遭到逮捕并被送到同一所監(jiān)獄。所有這一切都是菲利普·津巴多(Philip George Zimbardo)一手策劃并導(dǎo)演的。菲利普·津巴多出生于美國(guó)紐約,是當(dāng)代著名心理學(xué)家,美國(guó)心理學(xué)會(huì)現(xiàn)任主席,斯坦福大學(xué)教授,曾獲普通心理學(xué)終生成就獎(jiǎng)。為了探究社會(huì)環(huán)境對(duì)人的行為究竟會(huì)產(chǎn)生何種程度的影響,以及社會(huì)制度能在何種方式控制個(gè)體行為,主宰個(gè)體人格、價(jià)值觀(guān)念和信念、津巴多博士在報(bào)紙上發(fā)布了一則廣告:“尋找大學(xué)生參加監(jiān)獄生活實(shí)驗(yàn)。酬勞是每天15美元,期限為兩周?!苯Y(jié)果共有70人報(bào)名,經(jīng)過(guò)一系列醫(yī)學(xué)和心理學(xué)測(cè)試,24名身心健康、遵紀(jì)守法、情緒穩(wěn)定的年輕人入選。他們被隨機(jī)分成三組: 9名犯人,9名看守,6名候補(bǔ)。湯米和其他8名大學(xué)生就成了“罪犯”,于是發(fā)生了開(kāi)頭的那一幕。一切準(zhǔn)備就緒,“斯坦福監(jiān)獄實(shí)驗(yàn)(Stanford Prison Experiment,SPE)”開(kāi)始。8月14日
星期天。身穿筆挺帥氣的卡其制服,胸前掛著口哨,戴著深色Ray—Ben(雷朋)太陽(yáng)鏡,腰里別著警棍和手銬,9名看守的裝扮絕對(duì)可以亂真。不過(guò)這些“看守”沒(méi)有受過(guò)任何專(zhuān)門(mén)的職業(yè)訓(xùn)練,對(duì)如何做監(jiān)獄看守員,他們只是從電視、報(bào)刊雜志上見(jiàn)過(guò)。在前一天,津巴多教授以管理者的身份對(duì)9名看守們做出如下要求:所作所為盡可能貼近真實(shí),但不能使用暴力維持監(jiān)獄秩序。具體負(fù)責(zé)實(shí)驗(yàn)者也進(jìn)行了交代,看守的職責(zé)就是“維持監(jiān)獄法律和秩序”,但不要把“罪犯”的胡言亂語(yǔ),(例如“罪犯”說(shuō),禁止使用暴力、不要侵犯人權(quán)之類(lèi))當(dāng)回事。周日上午,看守們興奮而緊張地期待著“囚犯”的到來(lái)。當(dāng)這些穿著白色囚服的犯人站到他們面前時(shí),他們已經(jīng)喪失了真實(shí)姓名,不叫湯米、保爾或是約翰,而是“647”、“981”或“5705”,9名囚犯均戴有腳鐐,為的是讓他們盡快進(jìn)入角色。這個(gè)方法奏效了。8月15日

星期四。實(shí)驗(yàn)繼續(xù),看守看似更加無(wú)所顧忌,虐待不斷升級(jí),不公正的處罰相繼上演,又有兩名犯人達(dá)到精神崩潰的邊緣。津巴多自己的日子也不好過(guò),當(dāng)他的女友克里斯蒂娜·瑪絲拉奇來(lái)實(shí)驗(yàn)現(xiàn)場(chǎng),眼前的景象讓她錯(cuò)愕不已。她憤慨地對(duì)津巴多說(shuō):“你在折磨這些男孩子,這簡(jiǎn)直太可怕了!”
津巴多聽(tīng)到后,信心也有些動(dòng)搖了,但仍想將實(shí)驗(yàn)進(jìn)行下去。直到他發(fā)現(xiàn)看守們有玩出新的花樣,強(qiáng)迫兩個(gè)“囚犯”模仿動(dòng)物交配。這大大超出了津巴多容忍的極限,監(jiān)控屏幕前的他被這一幕驚呆了,侮辱和暴力已經(jīng)達(dá)到無(wú)可復(fù)加!他下決心結(jié)束這一切,第二天一早,他便宣布實(shí)驗(yàn)結(jié)束,比預(yù)期提前了9天!結(jié)論:
后天原因,由于監(jiān)獄的特殊環(huán)境使得獄警的行為更加暴力,到后期有些嚴(yán)重的甚至以懲罰犯人為樂(lè)。由于社會(huì)的多方干擾,該實(shí)驗(yàn)不得不被迫提前結(jié)束。事實(shí)上只進(jìn)行了6天。作為囚犯的參與者稱(chēng)之為可怕的夢(mèng)魘。也對(duì)他們?cè)斐闪瞬煌潭壬系膫Α_@個(gè)實(shí)驗(yàn)也導(dǎo)致了關(guān)于監(jiān)獄虐待一條新法律的誕生。個(gè)人的性情并不像我們想像得那般重要,善惡之間并非不可逾越,環(huán)境的壓力會(huì)讓好人做出可怕的事情?!霸趯?shí)驗(yàn)開(kāi)始的時(shí)候,兩組人之間沒(méi)有任何區(qū)別,不到兩個(gè)星期之后,他們之間已經(jīng)變得沒(méi)有共同之處了?!庇绕滹@著的是,囚犯?jìng)儜岩煞纸M并不是隨機(jī)的,他們認(rèn)為看守的個(gè)子比他們高。(其實(shí)兩組人的平均身高是一樣的。)津巴多試圖用他的實(shí)驗(yàn)解釋很多問(wèn)題,包括飛行事故、人在面對(duì)惡行時(shí)的無(wú)動(dòng)于衷、護(hù)士對(duì)病人的不當(dāng)處置以及自殺式襲擊者和恐怖分子的行為。由于對(duì)自己角色的認(rèn)識(shí),護(hù)士會(huì)過(guò)度服從醫(yī)生的安排,哪怕明知醫(yī)生開(kāi)出的劑量遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)大于規(guī)定的劑量;有四分之一的飛行事故的起因都是由于副機(jī)長(zhǎng)過(guò)于服從機(jī)長(zhǎng)的錯(cuò)誤判斷。
津巴多雖然強(qiáng)調(diào)人們?nèi)菀资艿江h(huán)境的影響而作惡,但他樂(lè)觀(guān)地指出,按照他的“十步法”,人們同樣能夠頂住壓力,英勇地違抗“路西法效應(yīng)”。先是承認(rèn)自己的錯(cuò)誤,最后是拒絕為了所謂的人身安全而犧牲自由,相信自己能夠反對(duì)任何不公正的制度。他舉的道德英雄包括抵抗麥卡錫主義、種族隔離、反對(duì)越戰(zhàn)的人。
有一個(gè)問(wèn)題是,當(dāng)津巴多說(shuō)好人變成了壞人時(shí),那些“壞人”并不認(rèn)為自己成了壞人,他們要么認(rèn)為受害者罪有應(yīng)得,要么認(rèn)為自己只是采用了惡的手段來(lái)實(shí)現(xiàn)其正當(dāng)?shù)哪康?,用目的的合理性為自己采取的手段辯護(hù)——虐囚的士兵是為了獲取反恐所需的情報(bào),恐怖分子是為了民族解放,在他們的同仁眼里他們也是道德英雄。這根本上是不同的善之間的沖突,而不是善和惡之間的沖突,已經(jīng)超出了心理學(xué)的范疇。

作為無(wú)權(quán)勢(shì)者的囚犯面對(duì)權(quán)勢(shì)者所建立的監(jiān)獄與獄規(guī)(可以延伸至類(lèi)似監(jiān)獄情境的社會(huì)結(jié)構(gòu)),囚犯?jìng)冎荒堋盎貞?yīng)”——這種“回應(yīng)”只能遭致兩種選擇:反抗或是順從。前者,帶來(lái)的是懲罰;后者導(dǎo)致的是自主性和尊嚴(yán)的喪失。就在試驗(yàn)的第三天,“罪犯”們竟然開(kāi)始相信“看守”經(jīng)常對(duì)他們說(shuō)的,他們真的低人一等、無(wú)法改變現(xiàn)狀。

最好的心理學(xué)實(shí)驗(yàn)總是問(wèn)著關(guān)于人性的永恒的問(wèn)題,例如,是什么讓一個(gè)人變得邪惡?一個(gè)好人也可以犯下惡行嗎?如果可以,是什么讓人們?cè)竭^(guò)那條界線(xiàn)?有沒(méi)有一個(gè)臨界點(diǎn),當(dāng)它被跨過(guò)之后就會(huì)釋放出邪惡?又或者是人們所處的處境決定了他們的行為?

囚犯和獄警
實(shí)驗(yàn)的思路很簡(jiǎn)單:看看被挑選出來(lái)的最健康、最“正?!钡钠胀ㄈ巳绾螒?yīng)對(duì)自己正常身份的徹底改變。被試中一半作為獄警,另一半作為囚犯。在本次實(shí)驗(yàn)中沒(méi)有折衷辦法,因?yàn)闉榱耸箤?shí)驗(yàn)有好的效果,必須真實(shí)地模擬現(xiàn)實(shí)生活中囚犯和獄警的經(jīng)歷。這些被試要迎接生命中的全新體驗(yàn)。
“囚犯”們像平時(shí)一樣一大早出門(mén)的時(shí)候被哀號(hào)著警報(bào)的警車(chē)“逮捕”。然后他們被采集指紋、蒙上眼、關(guān)進(jìn)監(jiān)獄。接著被剝光衣服、搜身、去虱子、理發(fā)、拿到囚服、得到一個(gè)號(hào)碼,并在一只腳上拴上鏈子。
另外的被試變成了身穿警服、手持木棍的獄警。斯坦福大學(xué)一幢建筑的地下室被偽裝成了一座監(jiān)獄。
于是,實(shí)驗(yàn)開(kāi)始了。
反抗被鎮(zhèn)壓
一開(kāi)始一切都很正常,可是到了第二天,“囚犯”們對(duì)于被監(jiān)禁做出了反抗。獄警們迅速而殘忍地采取了報(bào)復(fù)。他們把囚犯全身扒光,搬走了囚犯的床,把這次反抗的頭目拉去關(guān)了禁閉,并且開(kāi)始騷擾“囚犯”。
不久之后“囚犯”們開(kāi)始無(wú)條件地服從獄警。經(jīng)過(guò)了僅僅幾天逼真的角色扮演之后,被試報(bào)告說(shuō)他們之前的身份似乎已經(jīng)完全被抹去了。他們成為了自己在監(jiān)獄中的號(hào)碼。同樣的情況也發(fā)生在“獄警”們的身上,他們?nèi)枇R并且虐待自己的囚犯。
實(shí)驗(yàn)者也被卷入了自己的實(shí)驗(yàn)
甚至連首席研究人員Philip Zimbardo也承認(rèn)自己沉浸在了“監(jiān)獄主管”的角色中。事實(shí)上,Zimbardo相信這次實(shí)驗(yàn)最為有效的結(jié)果就是他自己被轉(zhuǎn)化為一個(gè)講究制度的人物形象——更注重監(jiān)獄的安全,而不是被試的福利。

Rikers Island 拘留所

津巴多 實(shí)驗(yàn)開(kāi)始 研究小組在當(dāng)?shù)貓?bào)紙上征集志愿者參與監(jiān)獄生活的研究,為期兩周,志愿者每天能得到15美元的報(bào)酬(相當(dāng)于今天的75美元)。有70名應(yīng)征者被招到斯坦福大學(xué)面試,接受一系列心理測(cè)試。這70個(gè)人都是美國(guó)的大學(xué)生。其中24名被認(rèn)為非常健康、正常的人被選中。從24人中間隨機(jī)抽出一半,讓他們飾演監(jiān)獄的看守,余下的一半飾演囚犯。志愿者們都說(shuō)他們更愿意飾演囚犯,部分是因?yàn)樗麄儫o(wú)法想像自己畢業(yè)后會(huì)去做看守,但他們可以想像自己是在坐牢,并以為可以從這一經(jīng)歷中學(xué)到一些東西。志愿者們還被告知,如果被分派去飾演囚犯,他們可能會(huì)被剝奪公民權(quán)利,并且只能得到最低限度的飲食和醫(yī)學(xué)護(hù)理。那些將飾演囚犯的人被告知在某個(gè)周日等在家里。在那一天,令他們感到吃驚的是,他們被真的警察“逮捕”了,并以搶劫罪起訴。當(dāng)?shù)氐呐谅灏柾芯炀謪f(xié)助了實(shí)驗(yàn)的進(jìn)行。他們被運(yùn)送到模擬的監(jiān)獄中,按照預(yù)定的程序接受脫衣搜身,并被賦予了新的身份——囚犯。隨后被帶到斯坦福大學(xué)心理學(xué)系地下室的模擬監(jiān)獄。模擬的監(jiān)獄建在了斯坦福大學(xué)的約旦館。Zimbardo是監(jiān)督人。他對(duì)參與者立下了一些具體的規(guī)矩:比如讓囚犯穿著不合身的囚衣——守衛(wèi)稱(chēng)呼囚犯時(shí)只用衣服上的號(hào)碼而不是名字,在囚犯的腳踝上面掛上鐵鏈——時(shí)刻提醒著他們的身份。Zimbardo希望借此以迷惑這些實(shí)驗(yàn)者。另一方面,為看守們提供了一些裝備,包括木制警棍,衣服——與獄警一樣的制服,并且他們還提供了墨鏡,防止眼神交流。

工作人員在實(shí)驗(yàn)開(kāi)始前就警告“看守們”不能暴力傷害囚犯。在斯坦福監(jiān)獄實(shí)驗(yàn)的錄像中可以看到Zimbardo對(duì)看守們說(shuō):你可以專(zhuān)斷的行事,他們的生活完全由我們控制??在這個(gè)試驗(yàn)中,你,我,他們都沒(méi)有隱私??我們要用各種方法剝奪他們的個(gè)性??在這種情況下,我們擁有絕對(duì)的權(quán)利,而他們一點(diǎn)也沒(méi)有。
實(shí)驗(yàn)中的獄警 第一天,大家還相安無(wú)事,但“囚犯”第二天便發(fā)起了一場(chǎng)暴動(dòng),撕掉囚服上的編號(hào)、拒絕服從命令、取笑看守。津巴多要求看守們采取措施控制住局面,他們照著做了??词貍冏栽讣影啵黄鸫蚱魄舴傅谋﹦?dòng)。他們采取的措施包括強(qiáng)迫囚犯做俯臥撐、脫光他們的衣服,拿走他們的飯菜、枕頭、毯子和床、讓他們空著手清洗馬桶,關(guān)禁閉。囚犯被要求快速的報(bào)數(shù),這種做法可以加強(qiáng)他們囚犯身份的思想。之后,看守們就開(kāi)始使用體罰。他們不允許囚犯上廁所,使得監(jiān)獄內(nèi)衛(wèi)生條件急劇下降。拖走犯了錯(cuò)誤的囚犯的床墊,讓他在水泥地上睡覺(jué)。作為侮辱,一些囚犯被迫裸體,一些被性侮辱。在沒(méi)有研究人員的監(jiān)督時(shí),甚至用滅火器襲擊囚犯,最后局面完全失控.。

接著,一個(gè)謠言開(kāi)始傳播開(kāi),說(shuō)是一個(gè)囚犯要求退出實(shí)驗(yàn)的話(huà),將導(dǎo)致其余的囚犯同樣被釋放??词刂缓脤⑶舴皋D(zhuǎn)移到另外一個(gè)安全的地方,并重建監(jiān)獄。但這謠言并沒(méi)有發(fā)生,看守們將他們的憤怒發(fā)泄到了囚犯身上。很快局面就失去了控制。囚犯遭受著看守的虐待和羞辱。巨大的壓力使得他們不敢反抗,逐漸變得壓抑。在實(shí)驗(yàn)的后期,很多人顯示出了嚴(yán)重的情緒障礙。

囚犯和看守很快適應(yīng)了自己的角色,一步步地超過(guò)了預(yù)設(shè)的界限,通向危險(xiǎn)和造成心理傷害的情形。三分之一的看守被評(píng)價(jià)為顯示出“真正的”虐待狂傾向,而許多囚犯在情感上受到創(chuàng)傷,有2人不得不提前退出實(shí)驗(yàn)。最后,津巴多因?yàn)檫@個(gè)課題中日益泛濫的反社會(huì)行為受到警告,提前終止了整個(gè)實(shí)驗(yàn)。這種人的性格的變化被他稱(chēng)為“路西法效應(yīng)”:上帝最寵愛(ài)的天使路西法后來(lái)墮落成了撒旦。

Christina Maslach是一個(gè)其中看守的女朋友,她強(qiáng)烈的斥責(zé)監(jiān)獄里的惡劣條件。Zimbardo不得不提早結(jié)束了實(shí)驗(yàn)。Zimbardo注意到50多個(gè)人看過(guò)監(jiān)獄后,Maslach是唯一一個(gè)質(zhì)疑其道德性問(wèn)題的。原本計(jì)劃兩個(gè)星期的實(shí)驗(yàn),在第六天就結(jié)束了。斯坦福實(shí)驗(yàn)在1971年8月20號(hào)結(jié)束,原本計(jì)劃14天的實(shí)驗(yàn),僅僅進(jìn)行了6天。實(shí)驗(yàn)的結(jié)果表明在特定的一個(gè)合法的意識(shí)形態(tài)、社會(huì)體制的支持下,人們的易感性和服從性。這項(xiàng)實(shí)驗(yàn)也被用來(lái)描述認(rèn)知失調(diào)理論的權(quán)威的力量。從心理學(xué)的角度來(lái)說(shuō),這個(gè)實(shí)驗(yàn)的結(jié)果支持行為的情境性歸因,而不是素質(zhì)歸因。換句話(huà)說(shuō),引導(dǎo)參與者行為的是特定的情境,而不是他們內(nèi)在的個(gè)性。這與著名的米爾格拉姆實(shí)驗(yàn)的結(jié)果相符合。結(jié)果分析這一結(jié)果表明,扮演囚犯的角色預(yù)謀造反,扮演獄警的角色則開(kāi)始變得具有暴力傾向??茖W(xué)研究表明,假如角色互換,你也會(huì)采取同樣的方式。正如它所驗(yàn)證的那樣,這通常是出于對(duì)方反擊的恐懼使得我們對(duì)我們的人類(lèi)同胞百般折磨。當(dāng)我們比某些人擁有絕對(duì)權(quán)力或來(lái)自上級(jí)的空頭支票時(shí),阿布格萊布監(jiān)獄(譯者注:虐俘丑聞,某些囚犯曾被迫要求裸身堆疊成金字塔狀)光禿禿的“金字塔”都會(huì)恪遵。
Zimbardo在美國(guó)眾議院司法委員會(huì)發(fā)表了他的實(shí)驗(yàn)結(jié)果。Erich Fromm,這項(xiàng)實(shí)驗(yàn)的反對(duì)者,隨后發(fā)表了一篇關(guān)于在被監(jiān)禁時(shí)人們的個(gè)性如何引導(dǎo)行為的報(bào)告。他采用了納粹集中營(yíng)的例子,得出與斯坦福監(jiān)獄實(shí)驗(yàn)相反的結(jié)論。不管結(jié)論怎樣,由于不道德性和缺乏科學(xué)性(Zimbardo不再是中立的觀(guān)察者,而是作為監(jiān)督者影響了實(shí)驗(yàn)),斯坦福監(jiān)獄實(shí)驗(yàn)受到廣泛的批評(píng)。
評(píng):小站以為該實(shí)驗(yàn)的結(jié)果只能算是人在某種情形下所做出的反應(yīng)的一種結(jié)果,但僅僅局限于某種或幾種情形,沒(méi)有普通性,原因是首先囚犯不是真囚犯,無(wú)罪惡感和愧疚感,缺乏對(duì)監(jiān)獄的適應(yīng)性及應(yīng)對(duì)措施。文化層次的原因,不是所有的罪犯都是大學(xué)生的,這些人不是職業(yè)囚犯,Zimbardo團(tuán)隊(duì)不是監(jiān)督者而是壓力測(cè)試的策劃者,他們一直在給囚犯和獄警壓力。模擬監(jiān)獄系統(tǒng)也缺乏自我完善措施.與奧斯維辛的囚犯更是完全不同的情形,情形區(qū)別很大!這種實(shí)驗(yàn)只能算是壓力測(cè)試。
在斯坦福監(jiān)獄實(shí)驗(yàn)不到十年之前,米爾格拉姆服從性研究(Milgram obedience study)表明,一經(jīng)權(quán)威人士鼓舞,普通人便樂(lè)于以他們認(rèn)為痛苦或者可能致命的電流電擊同伴。在很多人看來(lái),斯坦福實(shí)驗(yàn)強(qiáng)調(diào)了這些發(fā)現(xiàn),顯示如果賦予了過(guò)多的權(quán)力,普通人能夠多么輕而易舉地變成殘忍的壓迫者。時(shí)值四十五年后的今天,許多人回顧這項(xiàng)研究,來(lái)說(shuō)明阿布格萊布(Abu Ghraib)看守的所作所為以及美國(guó)濫觴的警察暴力何以會(huì)出現(xiàn)。斯坦福監(jiān)獄實(shí)驗(yàn)時(shí)常被引用,以此證明我們體內(nèi)隱含的原始暴力沖動(dòng);據(jù)說(shuō)這項(xiàng)實(shí)驗(yàn)表明,只要稍許推動(dòng),我們便都會(huì)變成暴君。
然而,斯坦福監(jiān)獄實(shí)驗(yàn)的真正教訓(xùn)并沒(méi)有那么清楚鮮明。從實(shí)驗(yàn)伊始,種種歧義便令研究撲朔迷離。即使如其所示,普通人隱藏著丑陋的內(nèi)在,這項(xiàng)研究還是證明了環(huán)境能夠塑造我們行為。這項(xiàng)研究,究竟指明人性的不可信賴(lài),抑或是認(rèn)為問(wèn)題全怪糟糕的系統(tǒng)??jī)H僅針對(duì)監(jiān)獄這個(gè)具體范疇,還是能夠涵蓋生活的方方面面?斯坦福監(jiān)獄實(shí)驗(yàn)到底真正揭示了什么?
這項(xiàng)實(shí)驗(yàn)的吸引力與其簡(jiǎn)潔的設(shè)置不無(wú)關(guān)系:囚犯、看守、假監(jiān)獄,再加一些基本規(guī)則。然而,現(xiàn)實(shí)中,斯坦??h監(jiān)獄是一個(gè)被嚴(yán)重操控的環(huán)境,看守和囚犯的行為方式,很大程度上早已注定,取決于他們所扮演角色。為了理解該實(shí)驗(yàn)的涵義,你必須看到:這個(gè)實(shí)驗(yàn)并非建立在一片空白之上;最初,實(shí)驗(yàn)?zāi)康木褪求w驗(yàn)在殘酷監(jiān)獄中的工作和生活。

This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world.I never graduated from college.Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation.Today I want to tell you three stories from my life.That's it.No big deal.Just three stories.The first story is about connecting the dots.I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit.So why did I drop out? It started before I was born.My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption.She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: “We have an unexpected baby boy;do you want him?” They said: “Of course.” My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school.She refused to sign the final adoption papers.She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life.But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me.And we designed it all into the Mac.It was the first computer with beautiful typography.If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them.If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college.But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward;you can only connect them looking backwards.So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.You have to trust in somethingthe Macintoshthat I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me.I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly.I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley.But something slowly began to dawn on me – I still loved what I did.The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit.I had been rejected, but I was still in love.And so I decided to start over.I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything.It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife.Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world.In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I retuned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance.And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple.It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick.Don't lose faith.I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.You've got to find what you love.And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.If you haven't found it yet, keep looking.Don't settle.As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.So keep looking until you find it.Don't settle.My third story is about death.When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.Because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failurewhich is living with the results of other people's thinking.Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice.And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.They somehow already know what you truly want to become.Everything else is secondary.When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation.It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch.This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras.It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue.It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age.On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous.Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off.Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish.And I have always wished that for myself.And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.Stewart Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish.Thank you all very much.

I think about one of the greatest compliments I've ever received: I interviewed with a reporter when I was first starting out in Chicago.And then many years later, I saw the same reporter.And she said to me, “You know what? So, today, I just want to share a few lessons—meaning three—that I've learned in my journey so far.And aren't you glad? Don't you hate it when somebody says, “I'm going to share a few,” and it's 10 lessons later? So, I grew up not loving the name, but once I was asked to change it, I thought, well, it is my name and do I look like a Suzie to you? It's true.And how do you know when you're doing something right? How do you know that?
